When Stranger Finds Lost Wallet on Airplane, He Returns It to Owner With Even More Cash Inside
By McKinley Corbley - Nov 26, 2018

*** begin quote ***

A compassionate airline passenger ensured that a 20-year-old man was reunited with his lost wallet – along with a little extra something to make up for their time apart.

Hunter Shamatt first lost his wallet while he was on a Frontier Airlines flight from Omaha to attend his sister’s wedding in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Upon realizing that his wallet was lost, he contacted the airline to see if anyone had turned it in – but to no avail. Since the wallet contained his ID, a signed paycheck, his debit card, and $60 in cash, he “feared the worst”.

Shortly after the flight, however, Hunter was stunned to receive a package in the mail from an anonymous sender. Inside was his wallet – along with an additional $40 in cash.

“Found this on a Frontier flight from Omaha to Denver-row 12, seat F wedged between the seat and wall,” read a letter that was enclosed with the package. “Thought you might want it back. All the best. PS: I rounded your cash up to an even $100 so you could celebrate getting your wallet back. Have fun!!!”

*** and ***

The Good Samaritan was later identified as Todd Brown, a father-of-five who was delighted at the chance to “have a little fun” with helping out a hard-working stranger.

*** and ***

Brown says that he often tries to do good deeds without any recognition, hence why he neglected to sign his full name on the letter, but Jeannie later insisted on praising the Nebraska native on social media.

“I try to teach my children to do the right things in life, help people when you can regardless of the outcome,” she wrote on Facebook. “This story is more about restoring faith in people than anything.

‘Everything in the wallet we could of replaced. We hear a lot of bad news but not enough good news. I personally want to thank Todd Brown and his wife for restoring faith that there are amazing people out there, the world is not as grim as it’s being made out to be.”

*** end quote ***

What an inspiring act!  Hope I can be that honest if the challenge is ever presented to me.

I loved the part of keeping one’s good works secret. I put that in my book.

Have you heard that old Irish adage about "good works only count if done in secret". Funny, I learned that from my maternal English Protestant grandmother who wanted to teach me about my maternal grandfather's "heathen Irish culture that has a few good points". ROFL!

Middletown’s Cain being featured in Basketball Hall of Fame showcase

*** begin quote ***

Cain perfected the lost art of the mid-range jumper for Manhattan College from 1981-85. He graduated as the program’s leading scorer with 1,872 points. Only two Manhattan players — Luis Flores (2,046 points, 2001-04) and Keith Bullock (1992 points, 1989-93) — have surpassed Cain over the past 34 seasons.

Cain’s career will be honored at the mecca of basketball history on September 14. His No. 42 Manhattan jersey, along with a biography and video of college highlights, will be on display for one year at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The display is part of the “Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Experience” exhibit.

“It’s a nice honor and it’s good to be remembered,” said the 6-foot-7 Cain, whose induction into the MAAC Honor Roll was announced Thursday. “It brings back some good memories.”

Cain, who is the only player in Manhattan history to earn all-MAAC honors in each of his four seasons, still holds Manhattan records in career field goals made (776) and career field goals attempted (1,512). He was the MAAC’s rookie of the year for the 1981-82 season when he averaged 15.3 points.

Obituary

Ridgewood - William A. McManus, III of Ridgewood New Jersey passed away Friday, June 28, 2019 at the age of 90. Bill was born, November 2, 1928 in Long Island City, N.Y. to William A. McManus Jr. and Margaret C. (Jordan) McManus. Bill was raised in Astoria, NY and lived in Port Washington and in New York City, NY, prior to moving to New Jersey in 1971.

He was a 1946 graduate of The Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School where he was class President and President of the Student Council, President of the Track team's select "Winged-Foot" Club, and inducted into the Bishop Loughlin Hall of Fame, Track and Field, in 2004. Bill enlisted and served in the U.S. Army from 1948 - 1951. He began his attendance at Manhattan College in 1951 where he majored in business and, after his time in the Army, graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Carol J. (Peterson) McManus; five children, Paul J. McManus, David W. McManus, Joanne M. (McManus) Boal (David), Elizabeth M. McManus, and William A. James J. Crane
Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, of Upper Montclair

James J. Crane, 72, of Upper Montclair, N.J., passed away on June 26, 2019 after a short illness.

Jim "Jocko"; "Craner" Crane was born in Brooklyn and moved to Upper Montclair in 1972. After graduating from Manhattan College, Jim honorably served in the Marine Corps Reserve. He also received his MBA from NYU which he pursued while working as a marketing executive for IBM. He remained at IBM for his entire career before retiring in 1998.

Jim was active in his community, volunteering with his wife at the Montclair Human Needs Pantry and participating in the town softball league. Jim was also an avid golfer, enjoying his days on the course with friends. Anyone who spent time with Jim was likely exposed to his never-ending re-telling of spectacularly poor jokes and unfailing devotion to the NY Jets. He was never shy about highlighting his time on the Brooklyn Mariners or his shining moment when he caught a pass from the legendary Joe Namath while playing with the NY Jets.

Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a great friend and was always enthusiastic to spend time with as many of them as possible. Jim was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He rarely missed a lacrosse, soccer, field hockey game or swim meet and was always one of the loudest "cheerleaders" even if he didn't know what he was cheering for.

Jim is survived by his wife, Lynn (nee Peterson); his children, James S. Crane and wife Kathy, and Jennifer Crane and husband Lee Thompson. He also had four grandchildren, Madeline, Emily, and Meghan Crane and Hannah Thompson, as well as his niece Ashley Cosgrove and a large, loving extended family.

Visiting hours will take place Monday, July 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Caggiano Memorial Home, 62 Grove Street, Montclair. A Mass of Requiem will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, at St. Cassian Church in Upper Montclair. Graveside memorial to follow at The Presbyterian Church of Upper Montclair. Memorial donations to humanneedsfoodpantry.org/donate, would be appreciated.

RE: Prayer Request for James, Son of Bernadette K. Finch '95 BS (Nee Kelly) & Darren

Good Morning All, our prayers are requested for Young James (10 years old) who has undergone some critical heart Surgery to repair defects that he has dealt with for a number of years. Other concerns had to be addressed as well. Please keep the volume up for James, his Parents, his Aunt and Godmother, Margaret, as James has begun this very important recovery and rehabilitation period. Young James has been a fighter and a Real Trooper in dealing with this and now he, his Parents and Family pray for a complete recovery free of complication and having been successful in solving his isues. We join them in raising our voices in prayer for James. Thank you. God Bless.

[JR: Here’s the last update, I saw on Facebook.]

Bernadette Kelly Finch is feeling blessed with Margaret Martin and 6 others in Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York.
18 hrs

When James was asked this morning by his sister if he was scared, he said” No, I’ve got hundreds of people praying for me. Why should I be scared?”

Every single one of you made a difference!! Thank you all for the outpouring of prayers and well wishes for our darling James. They worked!! We were told the surgery for the Aortopexy & removal of his PDA ligation would take 3-4 hours. We left him in the OR after sedation around 1pm. Imagine our surprise to see the surgeon walking towards us at 3:15! Finished and very optimistic. All went well and the only surprise was when the anesthesiologist was intubating, they noticed the trachea was also constricted by the pda ligation. When it was removed it popped back out- meaning James should be able to breathe better (although he’s never complained about it before) so doubly happy he got these procedures done!

We haven’t seen James yet, but the anesthesiologist says he is resting peacefully and we are waiting for a room to open up.

Thank you again for all the words of encouragement and prayers.
Much love, Bernadette & Darren xx

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Elizabeth E. Elia (nee Elizabeth Iley Evans), age 57, in the town of Hadley, Massachusetts on the 22nd of June, 2019. She passed after a long illness, surrounded by her loving children Emily and James.

Elizabeth (“Liz”) was born on March 20, 1962 in Bethesda, Maryland, the daughter of Laurence Evans, PhD, and Elizabeth T. Evans, CPA. After leaving the DC area, the family moved briefly to Vancouver, British Colombia before finally settling in Vestal, New York where Liz made some of her dearest life-long friends.

Liz graduated from Vestal High School in 1980 and attended Hamilton College as a Classics major before transferring to McGill University in Montreal where she majored in English Literature. After graduating from McGill with a BA in 1984, Liz went to work as an editor at Workman Publishing in New York until deciding to pursue a master’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Binghamton (SUNY Binghamton/Binghamton University). She worked briefly as Director of Anniversary Gifts at Manhattan College before turning to her true calling: education. She entered and graduated from the MAT program at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, and thereafter pursued a career as a teacher at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, specializing in English, English Language Acquisition, and English Literature. She also volunteered with the nonprofit group Hope for Haiti, traveling to that country to fight poverty through education.

Liz was a remarkable teacher. Watching her interact with children was truly amazing. During her career she received many honors, awards and accolades, but none of these accomplishments were as important to her as that of being a mother to her daughter Emily T. Elia, a doctoral student in Comparative Political Science at Rice University, and her son James L. Elia, a junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he is majoring in Biology. Her children were her pride and joy; her love for them was boundless.

In addition to her children, Elizabeth is survived by sister Cornelia Evans, brother-in-law Vladimir Shpitalnik and niece and nephew Alexandra and Liev, and by her brother Thomas Evans, sister-in-law Eliza Oquendo and nephew Sam.

Liz was a passionate woman who loved literature and poetry and who was filled with humor, which she readily shared with all around her. The family asks everyone who knew Liz to keep her in their hearts, remembering her laughter, her keen sense of humor, and her wish that we love generously, live fully, and try to appreciate the beauty of life “every, every minute.”

Services were held at Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic Church on Thursday, June 27th, 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hope for Haiti (www.hopeforhaiti.com) to help them continue the work that was so important to Liz.

ENDNOTE: "people should NOT be lied to and have fears and brain-worms injected into their lives"

2019-Jul-06

https://www.quora.com/profile/Michael-J-McFadden

Who was the youngest person that you ever knew who contracted lung cancer due to their smoking?
Michael J. McFadden, Author of "Dissecting Antismokers' Brains" and "TobakkoNacht -- The Antismoking Endgame"
Answered Tue [JR: That is 2019-Jun-25]

*** begin quote ***

Does that mean that NO ONE gets it at age thirty or thirty-five? No, but it means that so very, very few get it at that age that it is little short of psychotically paranoid to even have it enter your mind at such ages just because you have a pain or have a cough or have a funny feeling and you smoke. What the Antismokers want to do is make you believe a lie: i.e. that at that age you are at a “real risk” of getting lung cancer unless you stop immediately! In order to convince you to stop smoking “for your own good” even the Idealists among them (See my Signs of The Times article for a bit more on them at: Recognising Anti-Smoking Types -- Sott.net) will feel that they are “justified” in “bending the truth a bit” if they think such “bending” will result in your quitting.

Where I differ is that I believe people should NOT be lied to and have fears and brain-worms injected into their lives because other people think they have the right to dictate what choices people around them make. Would you be better off healthwise if you didn’t drink alcohol in your life? Probably. Does that give me some sort of right to inject nightmares into you that are intended to pop up and haunt you every time you open a beer or sip a glass of chardonnay? No, it does not.

*** end quote ***

McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973)

I never heard the term “brain worms” before.  Google seems to think it means “Neurocysticercosis”.  Tape worms from uncooked pork.

I have heard the term “ear worm” to describe a song that you can’t get out of your head.  I’ve been told that pretending to chew gum for a minute will stop an “ear worm”.  Seems to work for me YMMV.

I use the term “meme”, mostly as part of the phrase “paradigms (perceptions) and memes (heuristics)”

A meme is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture—often with the aim of conveying a particular phenomenon, theme, or meaning represented by the meme. Wikipedia

which is a derivative of DNA term gene (I think?)

In his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, British scientist Richard Dawkins defended his newly coined word meme, which he defined as "a unit of cultural transmission." ... "Meme" itself, like any good meme, caught on fairly quickly, spreading from person to person as it established itself in the language.

So I think Jasper McFadden’s “brain worm” is a meme!

But I like the idea of “injecting” into people. Laugh!

I thought this was an interesting insight and wish I’d learned about it younger in life.

I think many of our society’s “brain worms” or meme are false.  “Democracy”, “government”, “health — health care — health care insurance", “welfare”, and “warfare” are memes that are as false as the one Jasper McFadden rants about.

Some memes are falsified by physical evidence (i.e., “The Flat Earth”, “Columbus discovered America”, “the Holocaust didn’t happen”) but ones like “Democracy” are taught in Gooferment Skrules and seem to be impossible to “kill”.  There’s no “chewing gum” to get bad memes out of “We, The Sheeple” consciousness.

Sigh!

A problem I see with no solution?

Ideas welcome.

# - # - # - # - #

N.B.: “Democracy” is a bad idea because counting noses (i.e., 51/49) doesn’t make for good choices that respect the rights of the 49%.  And, when ALL noses are counted, you have the problem of “legitimacy”.  Like when 50% of the people don’t vote and the vote is 26% to 24%, is that “legitimate”?
