POSITRACTION: Teen Vandals Reading Books About Racism

Judge Sentences Teen Vandals to Reading Books About Racism – and It Apparently Worked
By McKinley Corbley - May 4, 2019

*** begin quote ***

Rather than punishing a group of juveniles for a racist act of vandalism, this compassionate judge wanted them to understand the error of their ways and made them read books—and it apparently worked.

Back in September 2016, five teenagers were charged with painting graffiti on a historic old schoolhouse in Ashburn, Virginia.

The schoolhouse, which had been used to teach black children during segregation, had been covered in swastikas, racist statements, and doodles that seemed typical of misled youngsters.

In fact, one of the teenagers had just been expelled from his school prior to the vandalism, which is why Prosecutor and Deputy Commonwealth Attorney Alejandra Rueda believed that the kids were lashing out – and she felt that she had a chance to turn the incident into an educational opportunity.

“The community blew up [over the vandalism]. Understandably. But you know, some of the kids didn’t even know what a swastika meant,” Rueda told BBC. “So I saw a learning opportunity.

“With children you can either punish or you can rehabilitate—and these were kids with no prior record—and I thought back to what taught me when I was their age, what opened my eyes to other cultures and religions… and it was reading.”

So instead of simply putting the kids on probation, Rueda drew up a reading list of 35 different books that deal with the pain and tragedies of racial injustice. Khaled Hosseini, Elie Wiesel, Harper Lee, Solomon Northup, Maya Angelou, and Alice Walker were just a few of the iconic authors she included on the list.

The teens were then asked to read one of the books each month for a year. For every book they read, they were asked to write a 3,500-word essay on the consequences of racism, bigotry, and prejudice. Additionally, the teens were made to visit the Holocaust Museum and a history museum exhibit on the Japanese-American internment camps following Pearl Harbor.

Two years after the incident, Rueda’s sentencing did exactly what she hoped it would. The kids are sticking to their education; they have not reoffended; and based on their essays as well as statements from the teens’ parents and lawyers, they were all “embarrassed” and regretful of their crime.

Wish they had included the reading list and I wonder why it’s not part of the Gooferment Skrules?

MOBIT: Daelemans, Teresa Marie [MCspouse RIP] of Daelemans, George Lucien [MC1956 RIP]

2019-Jun-16

https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/capitalgazette/obituary.aspx
?n=teresa-marie-daelemans&pid=193157172&fhid=2291

Teresa Marie Daelemans
(1937 - 2019)

Teresa Marie Daelemans, of West River MD, returned to Christ, June 13th, 2019 surrounded by the love of her family. She joins her husband George Lucien Daelemans, who passed in April 2010.

Born April 1st, 1937 in Queens New York, the oldest child to Violet and Joseph Thompson, both first generation immigrants. Raised in the Catholic faith, A lifelong fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, she graduated from Dominican Commercial Catholic HS. Upon graduation it was her plan to enter the convent until fate intervened and she met George, a recent graduate of Manhattan College, at a Church dance. They married August 10th, 1957.

Terry learned from her parents' self-determination and resourcefulness. Her, "Don't tell what I can't do" attitude, brought her and her young family of 5 children to Maryland, in 1967, where George began his long career with NASA and the space industry. Throughout the 60's and 70's she was a devoted, hands-on, stay at home mom. When the time came, she supported the family income working part time at St. Nicholas Rectory in Laurel. After the move to West River, she became an executive secretary at Annapolis Federal S&L.

She was coaxed into early retirement to return to caring for her grandchildren. It was her life's goal to be a loving wife and mother, taking great pride in shaping the lives of her children and grandchildren. Something she instilled in them all, for which we are very grateful. Her lasting love for her husband and family will be cherished. Through her faith in the Lord, and her family, Teresa was able to navigate the journey of wife and motherhood.

Her journey now over, she rests in peace in the loving embrace of Christ. She is survived by her 5 children, George, Gerard, Gregory, Peg, and Gary, 15 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and her three younger siblings, Jim, Gerard and Nancy.

Friends and family may call on Sunday June 23rd, 2019 from 4-7 pm at Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Rd, Galesville, MD 20765. A funeral mass will be held June 24th, 2019, 11 am, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Rd, West River, MD 20778 In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Our Lady of Sorrows Church. William H. (Bill) Dorsey

(Class of 1933)

A four-year starter and letterman as a fullback/end – a rarity in that era – he served as team captain of the Purple Riders under Coach John Cox during an 8-1-1 record season in 1932. During his four years on the gridiron, Ferry posted a combined 36-3-4 record.

He was also a four-year letterman in track, setting what was then the school record at 48 feet. He also lettered three years in basketball, serving as captain as a senior, and played one year of baseball.

The uncle of 2018 Hall of Fame inductee Raymond “Bill” Dorsey, he was recruited by and signed with the University of Pittsburgh (1934-35), but transferred to Manhattan College where he started for two seasons (1936-37). He was selected as a College All-American in 1939 and played in the College vs. Pro All-Star Game against the New York Giants.

The 6-2, 200-pounder was drafted by and played end for the Newark Bears of the American Professional Football Association, a “farm team” for the NFL’s Chicago Bears, in 1939.

He became head football coach of Powhatan High School in 1940, leading the team to a 9-0 record and tied the valley/state record as the only unbeaten/untied/unscored upon high school team (the other was Steubenville). He was co-coach in the Ohio-West Virginia All-Star Game (the precursor to the OVAC All-Star Game).

Dorsey then served as a Commander in the U.S. Navy from 1942-56, and later became head football coach at St. John Central (1947-50), posting an 18-19-1 record with his 1950 team going 8-2, and finally as head coach at Linsly Military Institute in Wheeling.

All Hallows High School hires first female principal

THE BRONX -

A staple of the South Bronx for over 100 years, All Hallows High School is making history as the all-boys school is hiring its first female principal.

Susan Natale is the first female principal ever at All Hallows High School.

Natale graduated from Manhattan College in the Bronx. She spent over a decade at Iona Prep in Westchester as their academic dean. But for All Hallows, it wasn't her past that made them hire her, it was her vision of the future.

"What she's done in terms of technology, STEM education, and moving kids forward to prepare them not only for the jobs of today, but for the jobs that may not even be invented yet,” says Ron Schutte, All Hallows H.S. president.

Now part of Natale's plan to include technology in the classroom involves the teachers. She plans on having them all being Google Level 1 certified this year, and that will allow them to use Google Classroom for the students. Students will also get Google Chromebooks that they'll be able to keep once they graduate.

"We want them to be at the same level as everyone else going off to college and have the same ability and knowledge to use the computer,” says Natale.

Natale's ability to look ahead includes the school itself and she answered definitively when asked if her hiring meant the all-boys school could go co-ed.

"This school is staying the way it is. This school is going to be an all-boys school. My position and me coming in as first female has nothing to do with co-education coming into play at all,” says Natale.

She'll officially take over as principal on July 1 and begin working toward her goal.

"Continue to educate the boys and put them in the best colleges, get them the best scholarships, get them placed into college so they ultimately get a job. This is their home and I want to make it the best home that they can have,” says Natale.

(RNS) — Three years ago, Stephen Kaplan, a religious studies professor at Manhattan College, a small Catholic school in the Bronx, N.Y., purposely populated his introductory course, “Nature and Experience of Religion,” with a mix of traditional students and returning veterans.

His strategy was part of Manhattan’s Veterans at Ease program, then an experiment that sought to help veterans reintegrate into civilian and academic life after being separated from both by years of combat and isolating service.

It didn’t take long for the theory behind the program to come face to face with practice.

One of Howard's brothers was Lester Lanin. He too was a band leader of renown. Many a time I danced to Lester Lanin and his orchestra.

It was during my college years. The more affluent female colleges for their special dances brought Lester Lanin in to play. I was fortunate to be invited by the ladies to these dances. Great dancing music. Lovely ladies. Many formal.

I did not own a tuxedo and could not afford to rent one. Nor could many of my class mates at Manhattan College. Manhattan was a poor boy's school.

The problem easily solved. We would wear our Air Force ROTC uniforms with a black bow tie added. Passed inspection!

Corsages an economic problem also. We would take turns riding the subway to Times Square. A 45 minute ride each way. Whoever went bought orchid corsages from a street peddler for like 5o cents a piece and brought them back to school

Those were the days!

Ep. 1424 Feminism and the Family
11th June 2019 — Tom Woods

(N.b.: some sensitive subject matter.) Ladies of Liberty week begins with Brave the World, as my guest Julia is known to her followers. We talk feminism, family, promiscuity, children, the state, and being an adult.

# - # - # - # - #

There’s a great line in this podcast about abortion which struck me a priori axiomatic:

“Nobody would follow a law that a majority of the population does not respect. If everyone believed that abortion was murder, it would not matter if Roe v Wade existed."

Not much to say after that.

And, it does give a good little L libertarian view of what “feminism” should mean.
