POSITRACTION: "Thousands of people" demonstrate their charity2019-Jun-09https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/strangers-donate-thousands- to-20-year-old-woman-raising-5-siblings/ Since Officers Gave Her a Car, Strangers Have Donated Thousands to 20-Year-old Raising Her 5 Siblings By Good News Network-Apr 22, 2019 *** begin quote *** Thousands of people have come together in order to support a 20-year-old woman who has been supporting her five younger siblings since their parents died. Sam Rodriguez is the oldest of her brothers and sisters, ranging in age from 5 to 17. Since both of their parents died from cancer within the last five years, she has taken charge of their family. Last week, the siblings made national headlines after their local police department published a video of themselves presenting Sam with a new car. The kids’ story was shared thousands of times – and it has resulted in thousands of readers donating to a GoFundMe campaign for the family. *** end quote *** Here’s an example of private charity in action. For all that everyone says that our society is greedy, self-involved, or uncaring, here’s a refutation. Like the widow’s mite, a lot of small efforts add up. For me, it’s the best way to sneak in the side door at the Pearly Gates. Allow me to quote from my novel: *** begin quote *** Have you heard that old Irish adage about "good works only count if done in secret". Funny, I learned that from my maternal English Protestant grandmother who wanted to teach me about my maternal grandfather's "heathen Irish culture that has a few good points". *** end quote *** ROFL! She was 17 years old. "Maybe this comes as a surprise to some, give my posts about hospitalization, but my plan has been there for a long time and is not impulsive," she wrote on Instagram. While initial reports claimed her death was the result of euthanasia, witnesses say she passed away from anorexia. Follow-up reports confirmed there were no signs of euthanasia. "I have quit eating and drinking for a while now, and after many discussions and evaluations, it was decided to let me go because my suffering is unbearable," she wrote. "I'm still breathing, but I'm not alive anymore." The Details Pothoven developed anorexia, depression, and PTSD after she was molested and raped at ages 11, 12, and 14. She finally reported the attacks to police at age 16. "I relive the fear, that pain every day," wrote Pothoven in her memoir. "Always scared, always on my guard. And to this day my body still feels dirty...My house has been broken into, my body, that can never be undone." Pothoven was admitted to a hospital last year after her refusal to eat left her organs in critical condition. Doctors placed her into a medically-induced coma and attached tubes to provide nutrients. When she awoke, her request for euthanasia was turned down. "They consider that I am too young to die," she told reporters. "They think I should finish my trauma treatment and that my brain must first be fully grown. That lasts until your 21st birthday. It's broken me, because I can't wait that long." Euthanasia has been legal in the Netherlands since 2002, but only in cases of "hopeless and unbearable" suffering. Patients between the ages of 12-16 must obtain parental consent. Rumors that Pothoven was euthanized stem from her recent conversation with the "end of life" clinic, a controversial facility where doctors reconsider patients' requests for euthanasia. Pothoven invoked her legal right not to be force-fed last week and passed away Sunday surrounded by friends and family. [JR: This puts a completely different spin on it. On the diamond, Orlando was an accomplished pitcher who was offered a professional contract by the St. Louis Cardinals. Following graduation, he served as the first-ever varsity basketball coach at Clarkstown South High School, before he was taken from us way too soon at the age of 36. Emily (Rogic) Baricevic '97 is the most accomplished scorer in the history of the women's soccer program at Manhattan, finishing with a program-record 40 goals and 95 points in her time in Riverdale. She broke onto the scene with a program-record 24 goals and 53 points as a freshman in 1993 en route to being named the MAAC Rookie of the Year. Both marks also rank second in the all-time MAAC record book. In large part to Rogic, Manhattan scored a program-record 53 goals and won 11 matches, which was the program standard for over 20 years. Daniel Sullivan '71 is one of the top cross country runners in school history. To date, he is the lone student-athlete in program history to qualify for three straight NCAA Championships, while helping lead the Jaspers to a pair of undefeated seasons. A standout on the track as well, he was a constant scoring member of the Manhattan Metropolitan Championship teams in 1968 and 1971. Sullivan returned to Riverdale as the first-ever coach of the women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field programs, guiding the Jaspers to the 1986 MAAC Cross Country and 1991 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. The 41st Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 9 in the Great Room of the Raymond W. Kelly '63 Student Commons. JOBIT: Bronner, Sr. Marita Regina Dorothy [MC1971 RIP] 2019-Jun-002019-Jun-11https://www.scny.org/in-memoriam-sister-marita-regina-bronner/ In Memoriam: Sister Marita Regina Bronner by Comm. Dir. | Jun 10, 2019 | In Memoriam, In Memoriam 2019, NEWS | 2 comments Sister Marita Regina was an outstanding educator and principal. Students and their families will long remember her for her compassion, kindness, understanding, and the love of learning, which she so joyfully imparted to them. Sister Marita Regina Bronner (Dorothy) was born April 25, 1925, in Manhattan, one of two children — a daughter and son — of George and Regina Mulcahy Bronner. Dorothy attended PS 193 and Cathedral High School before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1943. Sister Regina received a BA in French from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and an MA in Religious Studies from Manhattan College. She later earned New York State certification in French K–12 and certification in Supervision and School Administration. Sister Marita Regina spent fifty-one years of her religious life in the ministry of education, twenty-eight as a classroom teacher and twenty-three as a principal. As an elementary school teacher, she served at Visitation, Bronx; Saint Agatha Home, Nanuet; Saint Patrick, Manhattan; Blessed Sacrament, Staten Island; Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Shrub Oak, and Saints Peter and Paul in the Bronx. Her twenty-three years as principal were devoted to Saints Peter and Paul. Altogether Sister Regina served twenty-seven years at Saints Peter and Paul School where her contributions to education were highly valued. In a paper she presented at Convocation 1982, entitled, “The Charity of Christ Impels Us: Effective Charity in the New York Experience,” she stated, “I am proud to be continuing the outstanding achievements our Community has had in education, and I labor in the spirit of affective love with which the heart of Saint Vincent and Mother Seton overflowed.” When Sister Regina left the field of education, she offered her talents and energy to her sisters in retirement at Convent of Mary the Queen, Yonkers, and Saint Patrick Villa, Nanuet. She was living at Saint Patrick Villa at the time of her death on June 8, 2019. Sister Marita Regina was an outstanding educator and principal. Students and their families will long remember her for her compassion, kindness, understanding, and the love of learning, which she so joyfully imparted to them. Sister Regina possessed a kind spirit and a great sense of humor. She was a true Sister of Charity who exemplified the virtues we are called to live — humility, simplicity and charity. We rejoice with you now, Sister Marita Regina, as you are welcomed into the peace and joy of the Resurrection. Well done, good and faithful servant. #-#-# Bronner, Sr. Marita Regina Dorothy [MC???? JOBIT: O’Hare, Eugene “Gene” C. [MC1956 RIP] 2019-Jun-072019-Jun-11https://www.moore-fh.com/notices/Eugene-OHare Eugene Charles O'Hare July 20, 1934 ~ June 7, 2019 (age 84) Eugene “Gene” C. O’Hare, 85 years old, died on June 7, 2019. A native of Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Emily Marie Stuart O’Hare. As an Irish Catholic kid from Canarsie, Brooklyn, Gene attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, where he credits the Christian Brothers with teaching him to think. After graduating, he attended Manhattan College, a two-hour train ride each way, and graduated in 1956 with a degree in electrical engineering. Subsequently, he served three years as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force as a maintenance manager before diving into his 30-year career with the Bell System in and around New York City. He began as an electrical engineer but soon moved into management, a better fit for his outgoing personality. He enjoyed a career with enormous variety, moving every few years to a new challenge. He had director-level jobs in sales, engineering, marketing, banking and course development. He served as communications manager for the World Trade Center while the towers were under construction and headed up the effort to make telephones accessible for the hard of hearing. He invariably led his division’s United Way drive and served as a Big Brother. He concluded his career with what was by then NYNEX as a member of the Quality Team, initiating and presenting quality improvement seminars around the country. Gene carefully researched retirement destinations before zeroing in on Brevard, where he moved in 1990 and enjoyed an active, creative retirement. He took up tennis as well as painting, carpentry and travel, but the great passion of his retirement years was theater. Best known as a quirky character actor, he was in 22 plays and directed 10 in Western North Carolina, mostly at Brevard Little Theatre. He received numerous awards, both for acting and directing, and contributed his share of backstage work, building and painting scenery and serving as stage manager. He is survived by his wife, Lyn French O’Hare; his first wife and mother of his children, Mary-Elizabeth Barbarisi, daughter Lea-Ann Germinder; sons Thomas, Mathew, James, and John O’Hare; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren, in addition to many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. Witty and quick with a story, Gene enjoyed wide interests and talents along with great energy to pursue them. He will be missed and warmly remembered by family and friends. Service arrangements will be announced at a later date.. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Brevard Little Theatre, 55 E. Jordan St., Brevard, NC 28712. JFOUND: Koch, Timothy [MC????] Peace Corps @ Ethiopia2019-Jun-15http://www.liherald.com/stories/baldwinite-leaves-for-ethiopia,115721 Baldwinite leaves for Ethiopia Timothy Koch to serve in the Peace Corps Posted June 14, 2019 *** begin quote *** The skills that he develops “will give him a competitive edge when he returns home,” Fidler said. “Peace Corps volunteers return from service as global citizens well-positioned for professional opportunities in today’s global market.” Koch earned a degree in government and politics and philosophy from Manhattan College and a master’s in international affairs from The New School. He interned with the United Nations Development Programme, as well as the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV and AIDS in Thailand. He said it’s a common misconception that “you sign up [for the Peace Corps] and then you’re good to go.” He went through what he called a strenuous application process to be accepted into the corps, which required that he submit essays and be interviewed. He also had to be cleared — medically and legally. While he had already received most of his vaccines, he had to have the yellow fever shot to travel to Ethiopia. *** end quote *** Koch, Timothy [MC????] [JR: Wonder if he consulted with Flynn, Bro. Former Manhattan College rower’s future looks ‘bright’ Posted June 15, 2019 Courtesy of Manhattan College By SEAN BRENNAN *** begin quote *** Alia Flanigan has always been intrigued by travel, and the different customs and flavors the world has to offer. And now that she has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright scholarship, she will get to experience even more of the world outside the cozy confines of Riverdale. Flanigan, a former member of the women’s rowing team at Manhattan College who graduated last month, will head to the other side of the world come January to teach English to high school students as part of the Fulbright Program. She applied to the U.S. government-funded program with a “statement of purpose” and a grant proposal. “I got awarded an English teaching assistant grant. So I’m going for 10 months to Malaysia and I’ll help the English teachers there. There is also a community engagement project I’ll be involved with on the weekends and after school, so it will be very busy.” *** end quote *** Flanigan, Alia [MC2019] [JR: Praying for her safe return.] # - # - # - # - # 2019-Jun-15 @ 12:29 |

ENDNOTE: Yet physicians in the US are still busily manning the ambulances at the bottom of the cliff instead of building fences at the top2019-Jun-15https://nutritionfacts.org/video/flashback-friday-evidence-based-medicine-or-evidence-biased/ Flashback Friday: Evidence-Based Medicine or Evidence-Biased? Michael Greger M.D. FACLM June 7th, 2019 *** begin quote *** Evidence-based medicine may ironically bias medical professionals against the power of dietary intervention. *** and *** Dr. Esselstyn’s landmark study showing even advanced triple vessel coronary artery disease could be reversed with a plant-based diet has been criticized for being such a small study. But the reason we’re used to seeing such large studies is they typically show such small effects. Drug manufacturers may need to study 7,000 people in order to show a barely statistically significant 15% drop in ischemic events in a subsample of patients, whereas Esselstyn got a 100% drop in those who stuck to his diet—all the more compelling given that those 18 participants experienced “49 coronary events [such as heart attacks] in the 8 years before” they went on the diet. And these were the worst of the worst—most of whom having already failed surgical intervention. So, when the effects are that dramatic, how many people do you need? *** and *** Yet physicians in the US are still busily manning the ambulances at the bottom of the cliff instead of building fences at the top. *** end quote *** Yes, switching to a whole-food plant-based dies is tough. But the alternative is so bleak that it should be in a horror movie. “We, The Sheeple” have been brainwashed into a meme that kills and cripples us. This doctor advocates going vegan, but he does urge even any change is better than no change. If you don’t believe it, just look at the death and disease rates in pre- and post- World War 2 Japan, Okinawa, China, and certain African countries like Uganda. Or the examples in the US of the Seventh Day Adventists, who are vegan non-smoker non-drinkers. So it can be done! I’ve changed my diet. Not nearly as much as I want to. Having just received some “bad” medical news (i.e., some marginal chemistry numbers and a heart murmur), I have become more diligent about my diet and exercise. Maybe if the public was more aware, a lot of literal heart ache could be avoided. I’ve begun asking restaurants for their “vegan menu”. Laugh! After a strange stare and an admission they don’t have one, I pick the “least bad option”. You can get a vegetable fajita that almost a good a steak; you just have to pretend that the carrots are steak. Laugh! YMMV! # - # - # - # - # |
