POSITRACTION: Smartphone app can now diagnose anemia

Engineer Creates Smartphone App That Screens for Anemia By Taking Pictures of Your Fingernails
By Good News Network-Dec 4, 2018

*** begin quote ***

A newly-developed smartphone app can now diagnose anemia without even having to take a blood sample

Anemia is a condition that develops when a person’s blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells or haemoglobin. It affects two billion people worldwide and if it is left untreated, it can lead to fatigue, paleness, and cardiac distress.

But now instead of a blood test, biomedical engineers have created an app that can use smartphone photos of someone’s fingernails taken to accurately measure how much haemoglobin is in their blood.

“All other ‘point-of-care’ anemia detection tools require external equipment, and represent trade-offs between invasiveness, cost, and accuracy,” said principal investigator Doctor Wilbur Lam, associate professor of paediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine. “This is a standalone app whose accuracy is on par with currently available point-of-care tests without the need to draw blood.”

*** end quote ***

Wow.  This would have been a great help to my now deceased wife who was afflicted with an unknown blood disease that required haemoglobin monitoring.

Hope this fellow has other breakthroughs.

A stunning achievement.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Sarah

2018-Dec-15

Good Afternoon All,

An update and thanks from our friend Sarah and her Family. Sarah has been in our prayers as she battles Cancer, the Heart Tumor and other related issues. She and her Family thank you for your prayers and ask that you please continue. The MDs have had some wonderful success in removing successfully her Tumor and have made strides with her Cancer with some further testing and an action plan to qualify and treat her Cancer. Sarah will begin her Chemo after the New Year. Please keep the volume up for Sarah and her Family as they continue this journey of Faith and Healing. We pray too, that as Sarah and her Family share this Christmas and the wonder of The Birth of Jesus, that the Peace of Jesus Embraces them and gives them the strength of hope and God's Love.

Thank you. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: How little we understand about ourselves and our world

2018-Dec-15

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/30/science/animal-intelligence-octopus-cephalopods.html

MATTER
Yes, the Octopus Is Smart as Heck. But Why?

  • It has eight arms, three hearts — and a plan. Scientists aren’t sure how the cephalopods got to be so intelligent.
  • An octopus in an aquarium in Brest, France. The animals are highly intelligent, but researchers are uncertain how the trait evolved.
By Carl Zimmer
Nov. 30, 2018

*** begin quote ***

Mr. Amodio said that scientists still need to learn a lot more about cephalopods before they can know if this hypothesis is sound. But the research may do more than shine a light on octopuses and their cousins: It could give us a deeper understanding of intelligence in general.

*** end quote ***

I often wonder when I see people (i.e., politicians, bureaucrats, “celebrities”, pundits) how people can be so “dumb”.  The memes that propagate through the human population are “interesting”.  Some are helpful (i.e.: “look both ways before crossing”; “early to bed and early to rise … …”; the seven P’s) and others are dangerous (i.e.: “mind altering drugs expand your horizons”; “if one is good, more must be better”; fanatical religions).  I do know, as much as anyone can “know” anything, the octopus has a better “grasp” of life that some people do.  Maybe even me?
