POSITRACTION: Businesses don't need to be "clubbed" to do good things

2018-Oct-14

http://www.clonakilty.ie/autism-friendly-town

Clonakilty Autism Friendly Town

*** begin quote ***

Clonakilty is Ireland’s First Autism Friendly town in Ireland.  In order to acquire this designation Clonakilty had to go through a robust accreditation process. It had to engage and train 25% of businesses and voluntary organisations, train 50% of public services, 50% of school communities, 50% of healthcare professionals, 3 employers and reach and engage 25% of the town’s population and develop a three-year Autism Friendly town plan.

*** and ***

The Autism Friendly Champions have done the following to receive their accreditation:

•    Followed autism friendly staff training
•    Developed a social story to help prepare the visit to the organisation
•    Are service dog friendly
•    A sensory activity specific to that organisation for example, host a weekly quiet time, make available a Relaxation Box for customers or dedicated quiet space
•    Committed to working with the Clonakilty Autism Friendly Town Committee on the implementation of the three-year town plan

*** end quote ***

It’s a small town — I’ve never heard of it — but maybe it’s the start of a trend.  Can’t cost much to make some accommodations.

Since I’ve been “pop-pop” to a baby, I’ve been observing the rest rooms of stores I patronize.  I’m not afraid to let the store manage know when their “facilities” are not up to snuff.  I did an MBA paper on the secret of one minor league ball park’s outstanding fiscal results — double everyone else’s profitability — “clean women’s rest rooms.  Target, or “Tar-jay”, as we call it, is always outstanding.

Hope that we as “customers” ask for accommodations for the “there but for the grace of God go I” fellow humans.  And those that abuse the concept of “service animals” like the lady trying to fly with her “support squirrel or those that use fake “service animals” are appropriately scorned.

Whenever I run into anyone in a service position, I try to be extra considerate because they are doing a job I wouldn’t want to do.  If I had to, I’d probably strangle someone.  (Never said I was perfect; just trying.)

Wasyl William Krawec
1969 - 2018
Obituary

Yonkers - Wasyl William Krawec "Billy" 1969-2018

It is with great sorrow and despair that Wasyl William Krawec entered into eternal peace on October 14,2018 surrounded by his family and friends, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 49.

Billy was a loving husband to Lisa Marie Wozniak-Krawec, and devoted father to his three children; daughter's Tatiana (Tati), Alexa and son Wasyl (Wasylko), precious son to Maria (Hvizd) Krawec, predeceased by his father, Wasyl Krawec, son-in-law to Lorena Wozniak and cherished brother to Sonya and brother-in-law Michael Finkelstein . Billy will be fondly remembered by his niece Tilly, nephew Lenox, three godchildren and extended family.

Billy was born and raised in Yonkers, NY, graduated Manhattan College and ICE, Peter Kump the Institute of Culinary Education. He turned his passion for food by taking over the family business which became a staple in the community. Billy will be particularly remembered as the "Kielbasy King", owner of Yonkers Miasarnia.

He was a parishioner of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yonkers, NY and a lifelong member of the Ukrainian Community which included the Ukrainian American Youth Association CYM in Yonkers and Arizona, where he and his family resided for several years prior to permanently settling back in Yonkers.

From childhood Billy was an exceptional soccer player and member of the Yonkers Krylati Soccer League where he passed down his expertise and sportsmanship to his children. Billy was a hunting enthusiast, but his passion was his Harley Davidson motorcycles which he enjoyed riding with his friends wherever the road would lead, cross country, Lake George or to the heart of the Catskills where he bonded on his stomping ground, Ocelia CYM, Ellenville NY.

Billy's many accomplishments revolved around his devotion to family and friends which was clearly felt through his significant contribution and participation in his work and service within the Ukrainian community.

Friends may call on Monday (Today) from 5PM to 9PM and Tuesday from 2PM to 4PM & 7PM to 9PM at Sinatra Memorial Home, Inc., 499 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers, NY. The funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 10:00 at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 21 Shonnard Place, Yonkers. Panakhyda Service will be held on Tuesday evening at the Funeral Home at 7:30PM. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, http://www.stjude.org

COMMENT: Kuhn, Rob (MC1973) thinks the endnote is pointless, inaccurate, whining

2018-Oct-15

RE: ENDNOTE: Putting the “goof” in Gooferment

Sun, Oct 14, 4:30 AM (1 day ago)

What? Not the responsibility of the engineers who created and manage the database - most likely non-Governmental vendors? How is blaming "the government" different from blaming the Catholic RELIGION for the actions of bad priests? Whether you're criticizing incompetence or evil, it's not accurate to characterize an organization as ONE thing unless you can indict -- or applaud -- every single member. Otherwise it's pointless - and I repeat, inaccurate - whining.

Kuhn, Rob (MC1973)

# - # - # - # - #

[JR: Three quick points: (1) The Government, with its self-assumed monopoly of force, is corrupt and unable to get out of its own way.  (2) Sure there is an obvious problem in the system design, but the lack of an over-ride or appeal is just as stupid. AND (3) I blame BOTH the politicians and bureaucrats in Gooferment for all its abuses AS WELL AS the entire Church and hierarchy for their crimes and cover ups. Do I have to indict every single participant in order to indict an organization? I think not. Pointless? Possibly but at least I can continue to expose the farce that we are facing! Inaccurate? Not! Whining? Probably since the problem appears to be unfixable. Thanks for the email and reading my rant.]

LEITRIM WALL
Mike Dillon honours his Leitrim roots in Leitrim Wall
News Reporter — 18 Oct 2018

*** begin quote ***

The savage loves his native land, so they say, and so, evidently, does the gentleman.

There are a select few names spoken whenever Leitrim and New York are mentioned in the same sentence. Mike Dillon is one of those.

The Cloone man’s continued contribution to his home county, and to the lives of any Irish person fortunate enough to cross his path in the Big Apple, has been immense. Mike has generously bought a brick in the Leitrim Wall, the innovative fundraising initiative designed to complete the county’s Centre of Excellence in Annaduff.

He dedicated it to his late wife with the simple inscription, ‘In memory of Mary Dillon N.Y –Dillon & Doyle families Cloone.’

I spoke this week to his friend, Manorhamilton man Frank Brady, in New York to get the lowdown on Mike, to find out a little more about the man who was awarded the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at the New York GAA dinner dance last year.

The following is taken from an article Frank prepared on his friend for that special occasion.

“A distinguished footballing career at club, college and county levels, saw Mike’s talents heralded in Ireland, London, and New York. As a student in St. Mel’s he won Leinster Senior College medals in 1950 and ’51. In those same years, he was one of the leading lights that propelled Cloone to two Leitrim Senior Championships.

“A bright inter-county future awaited Mike, but in 1952 he immigrated to London, and transferred to the St. Vincent’s Club, winning two London Championships, 1953 and 1954. Perhaps a good indication of Mike’s stature as a player was the fact that Leitrim brought him back to play in the Connacht Championship in ’54.

In 1955 Mike arrived in New York, and his well-established credentials were a great boost to the Leitrim-based New York team that was coming to the fore. He had a distinguished playing career States-side, winning a New York Championship in ’58 and the Ballantine Cup in ’59.

“In International games Mike’s prowess was very much in evidence against Ireland’s best of that era, namely Dublin and Kerry. He lined out against Dublin at Croke Park, and he was captain the following year when New York played Kerry in Gaelic Park, and was noted as “playing a Trojan part in the game” against the All-Ireland champions.

“Besides a great sporting career, Mike also enhanced his academic credentials in New York. He earned a B.A. from Manhattan College and an M.B.A. from Fordham University. He rose to prominence in the corporate boardroom, becoming an executive with the media giant C.B.S. In addition, he and his late wife Mary, ran a very successful hotel resort in the Catskills. It was always a very welcoming sojourn for Leitrim exiles. Mike has two daughters Mary and Deirdre, and seven grandsons.”

Hi!

Judge McGuirk’s family were long time parishioners of St Barnabas and very active in Parish activities. At one time his late father, John, redesigned the logos for the Parish Bulletin. He was also very active in fund raising activities in the Parish.

The Judge was a member of the Class of 1963 at Manhattan which had the largest number of elected NYS Supreme Court Justices in the history of the College!

May He Rest In Peace.

McEneney, Mike (MC1953)

FDA Turned Your $10 Supplement into a $40,000 Drug
BY ANH-USA ON OCTOBER 4, 2018 — STOP CRONY HEALTHCARE

*** begin quote ***

Earlier this year, we told you about an FDA back-channel that allows drug companies to turn supplements into drugs—and remove the supplement versions from the market. This has happened to a popular and medically important version of vitamin B6 (pyridoxamine), and with the FDA’s approval of a new drug to treat sickle cell anemia, the same could happen to L-glutamine. Unless we close a back-channel at the FDA, more and more supplements will be turned into expensive drugs, and consumers won’t be able to manage their health cheaply and naturally with the supplement versions.

Last year, the FDA announced the approval of Endari, a drug for sickle cell disease. Endari is an oral powder comprised of L-glutamine, an important amino acid currently available as a supplement. The drug company, Emmaus Medical, Inc., filed an investigational new drug (IND) application—demonstrating their investigation of L-glutamine as a drug—on May 15, 1997. This is important because there is no new dietary ingredient (NDI) notification for L-glutamine. (Think of an NDI notification as a “new supplement” notification; by law an NDI notification must be filed on supplements that came to market after 1994.)

Enter the FDA back-channel. If a drug company begins investigating a nutrient for use in a drug before a supplement company files an NDI notification on that nutrient, the company can ask the FDA to have supplement version removed from the market, leaving consumers with no other option than the drug. Currently, a 120-pill bottle of L-glutamine can be purchased for less than $10; a year’s worth of Endari will reportedly cost consumers more than $40,000.

If Emmaus enforces its IND, the only way that L-glutamine supplements could survive is if the FDA decides that L-glutamine was in the market “in or as” a supplement before 1994. To make matters worse, the FDA has not completed its policy that lets companies know what is and isn’t grandfathered, or even how to file an NDI notification. Given how the current draft of the FDA’s proposal is written, there’s even a real danger that supplements most people would think of as “grandfathered” could require NDI notifications. All of this creates confusion that only helps drug companies further exploit this back-channel.

And, here’s a great example of why I feel that the Gooferment’s FDA should be an “advisory” function at best.

Argh!
