POSITRACTION: Stent Retriever is another miracle

2018-May-27

Husband’s Hunch Saves Woman Who Fell Asleep Watching TV
By McKinley Corbley - May 20, 2018

*** begin quote ***

Using a device called a Stent Retriever, Andy’s team was able to extract the blockage that caused the brain injury and restore the crucial blood flow.

It’s the first advancement in stroke patient care in twenty years—and it is monumental: it’s been likened to the advent of penicillin.

Before that, the disabling blockage almost consistently resulted in paralysis, brain damage, speech problems, or death.

*** end quote ***

While, of course, it’s best to avoid such in the first place.

(I  believe in a plant based diet. But easier said than done. Old dog and new tricks.)

“What hath God wrought.” — Samuel Morse

Applies equally as well here.

Raymond T. Ryan
Obituary

Raymond T. Ryan of Cazenovia, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, May 29, 2018.

He was born December 5, 1927, in Alderbrook Park, NY, to John and Marguerite (Buckley) Ryan. After serving in the Air Force, he graduated from Manhattan College, did graduate work at NYU, and became a CPA. Ray enjoyed a long and fulfilling professional career at a national accounting firm, where he eventually transferred from Manhattan to Syracuse, became a partner and was active professionally for more than 65 years.

He served on several boards, including Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital, Paul Smith's College, the Hinman Foundation, Cazenovia College, and MACNY, as well as committees at St. James Church. He was also a member of the Century Club and Onondaga Country Club. Ray enjoyed the Adirondacks, where he was born the seventh of thirteen children. He cherished time spent there, as well as at his beloved log cabin in Quebec, Canada and his home at Pine Island, Florida. He loved hunting and fishing, a good book, westerns, the opera and fine tobacco. Ray completed many home projects (with some still in the works)! He was a generous man who gave his time mentoring others that had an impact on many. His family remembers him as supportive, loving, contrary, ambitious and giving. They fondly remember many vacations, telling stories around the fire and having "visits" with him. He had an uncommon ability to listen, assess and help his clients and his family. The family will remember him with great fondness and humor!

Ray leaves behind his family, his wife, Diane Ryan; his children, David (Susan) Ryan of Delaware, Maura (Paul) Ryan/Weithman of Indiana; Raymond (Jill) Ryan and Timothy (Heather) Ryan of Cazenovia, and Kathleen (Joseph) Ryan-O'Neill of Oregon; his grandchildren, Sarah, Mary and David Ryan; Anne and Meggie Weithman; Connor and Liam Ryan; Andrew, Duncan, Tessa, Winston and Dagny Ryan, and three sisters. He was predeceased by his son, John J. Ryan.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2018 at Michael E. Brown Funeral Services, 2333 Fenner Road, Cazenovia, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 2, 2018 at St. James Church, 6 Green St., Cazenovia. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Ryan may be made to the Community Action Partnership, 3 E. Main St., Morrisville, NY 13408. JOBIT: Horch, Joe [MC???? RIP] 2018-May-27

Joe Horch

HORCH-Joe, 83, died 23rd May 2018 in Poughkeepsie, NY from respiratory complications due to pulmonary fibrosis. He was surrounded by his children.

A memorial service will be held at Jacobson's Funeral Home in Huntington Station, NY on Saturday, June 2nd from 5-7pm. To honor him, In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Friends of the South Huntington Public Library, 145 Pidgeon Hill Road, Huntington Station, NY 11746 631.549.4411.

A first generation American, Joe was the only child of Rosa and Konrad Horch of Maspeth. He was the first to go to college, earning a bachelor's degree from Manhattan College in electrical engineering. From his beginnings at IBM, researching early silicon transistors and integrated circuits, then serving at Wright Patterson Air Force Base conducting experiments in navigation, Joe moved his growing family with wife Kathleen to Long Island where he devoted almost 40 years to Sperry Rand developing various patented systems for the U.S submarine fleet. As Joe earned his masters and became a professional engineer, Kay raised their 5 children.

Summers were spent on family camping trips from Canada to Florida. Joe volunteered as the CYO president, soccer referee, Harbor Boating Club member, and offered computer instruction with the local senior net. While conducting research at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, he fostered a love of the open water. Despite his poor swimming skills, he was often found tinkering on his boat or eating chicken with his crew during the Thursday night sailing races in Huntington Harbor.

In his retirement, the couple traveled with close friends and visited family. Joe and Kay watched soccer from the sidelines of their grandchildren's games. Through many family projects, Joe bestowed important aspects of critical thinking to the Horch grandclan.

December 2018 would have been his 60th wedding anniversary. Joe is predeceased by his granddaughter Alissa. He is survived by his wife, 5 children and 15 grandchildren. Disclaimer: Joe would have granted exception and approved the use of pronouns in this piece. Arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc. JNEWS: Puglia, Gabrielle [MC????] Woman of Distinction

JUNE 1, 2018 / WOMEN OF DISTINCTION / OPINION
Gabrielle Puglia
By Ily Goyanes

*** begin quote ***

When speaking to Gabrielle Puglia’s peers, friends, and relatives, the word “passion” comes up over and over again. Born and bred in Brooklyn, Puglia’s mission in life is to help those in her community that are in need.

“I would describe myself as an empathetic, kind, modern-day hippie just trying to leave the world better than I found it,” she explains.

One of her passions is Wreaths Across America, an organization that honors fallen American soldiers on national Wreaths Across America Day.

The organization visits Cypress Hills National Cemetery and performs a Ceremony of Remembrance followed by the laying of Remembrance Wreaths.

“Gabrielle Puglia deserves the honor of being a Woman of Distinction because she embodies all of the qualities which exemplify the award,” says her friend, Heather Cuccio.

Cuccio continues, “She reminds and educates our community on how they can honor those soldiers whom presently serve and those whom have passed with the recognition they so rightfully deserve.”

*** and ***

She graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Arts with honors, majoring in communications with a minor in Spanish. She is currently working towards an Masters of Science in speech-language pathology from Long Island University Brooklyn.

ENDNOTE: "Vaticanomics" making “God” the State

2018-Jun-02

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2018/05/thomas-dilorenzo/vaticanonomics/

Vaticanomics: Serving the “God” of the State
By Thomas DiLorenzo

May 21, 2018

*** begin quote ***

The Vatican recently released a report on “the present economic-financial system” of the world that is typical of all pronouncements about economics from the Catholic Church bureaucracy:  It is astoundingly ignorant of even elementary economic concepts, and is written in the language of a C-/D+ high school writing assignment.  There is confusion over the definition of very simple economic concepts like profit and GDP.   There are 49 footnotes, but none of them makes reference to any economic literature.  They are mostly speeches by Catholic clergy who don’t seem to have much knowledge at all of the subject they are pontificating about.

Entitled “Oeconomicae et pecuniariae quaestiones”, the report expresses alarm about “the growing influence of financial markets on the material well-being of most of humankind” and urges more government intervention, more regulation, more politics, more welfarism, more central planning, more taxes, and less freedom.  As I said, it is typical of all such pronouncements about “Catholic social teaching” in the area of economics.

The first assumption the report makes is that there are no ethical guidelines in markets.  The report then declares that the economy “needs ethics in order to function correctly.”  And the kind of ethics needs to be “people-centred (sic),” says the Vatican.  Well, yah.  Is there any other kind of ethics other than human-centered?  Robot-centered??  Does no one in the business world have any ethical guidelines, as the Vatican asserts?

*** and ***

One would think the Catholic Church would support the classical liberal philosophy of individualism, defined by F.A. Hayek in The Road to Serfdom as simply respect for the individual – all individuals – and rejection of the notion that individuals should become pawns or slaves of government authorities.  But no, as a collection of hardened collectivists and Marxist ideologues the Vatican denounces individualism.

*** end quote ***

If the scandals of paedophilia were not enough to drive you from Holy Mother Church, then the lack of understanding how “capitalism” lifts ALL humanity out of poverty by harnessing the basic human emotion must. It is scandalously stupid.   How many North Koreas, Venezuelas, or USSRs do you have see before you recognize that socialism, communism, or fascism just do NOT work!

Argh!

Recently the Pope has accepted homosexuality as “God’s creation”.  Check our Pat Buchanan’s column! I understood the response to be a departure from “love the sinner; hate the sin”.  How far can we twist moral absolutes?  What’s next to be OK — abortion?

One reason that I have “left” Holy Mother Church is that it LEFT me.  Left like the old Democratic party where the yellow dog D’s fought for fiscal rectitude. Left like the Taft wing of the old Republican party which fought against involvement in foreign wars.  Left like the big L Libertarian party that dumped principle and nominated Johnson / Weld.

Everyone dumped on good old Ron Paul, who was the only “peace” candidate in the election, as crazy.  Guess I’m crazy too.

Sorry, but going to the 50th reunion, would make me a hypocrite when the 50th banner goes down the aisle at Mass.

Just can’t do it.

I feel that I have been betrayed by the “Social Justice” warriors, and all the other socialist crap, that proceeds from “academia”.

Argh!

I wish that I had an audience of many thousands of Jaspers, who could convince me I’m wrong.

I feel like that "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only aresounding gong or a clanging cymbal."

Hopefully I don’t alienate the little audience I have, but if I do so be it.

I’m a tired old Jasper who just calls them as I see them.
