This student’s plan to tackle food insecurity may sound unappetizing, but it’s actually pretty ingenious.
Joy Youwakim, an economics student at the University of Texas, has proven that we can safely grow produce on top of inactive landfills.
Using a 200-foot patch of land in a closed landfill southeast of Austin, Youwakim worked with her fellow students to grow 20 pounds of various crops, such as radishes, eggplant, bell peppers, cucumbers, and cantaloupe. All of the produce was then tested and declared safe by the Food Safety Net Services.
If Youwakim expanded her efforts to include all 390 acres of the landfill, she would be able to grow enough food for over 8,000 families. There were more than 6,000 inactive landfills in 2012, which roughly amounts to over 2 million acres of unused land. If implemented nationwide, Youwakim’s experiment could spell the end for food insecurity.

I’m not sure that I buy into “food insecurity”. And, I’m not sure that every landfill can be as safe based on one 200 foot patch.
That being said, it seems a waste not to allow the experimentation to continue.
Large scale testing and using the output for animal feed should give is more confidence in the safety.
If it all works out, then this student has really shown up the “experts”.

John F. Lantz (Jack), 84, passed away peacefully at home, May 15, 2018 with his wife by his side. Jack was born December 23, 1933 to John and Anna Lantz in Manhattan, New York.
Jack served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Environmental Engineering. He was employed as a Civil Engineer at several firms, and started his own engineering firm in Monroe, New York. In 1996 he retired from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey at the World Trade Center as Deputy Chief Environmental Engineer. Jack and Helen, his wife of 59 years, retired to Skidaway Island, Georgia where he served on the Public Works Committee and devoted his time to tennis and golf.
He is survived by his wife Helen McCullen Lantz, their children, Linda Larsen(Anthony), Karen Lowe (Don), Robert Lantz (Shawn) and Cynthia Duquette; his grandchildren, Veronica Larsen, Nick, Matt and Kim Lowe, Chase, Jordyn and Jenna Lantz, Connor and Brennan Duquette; and his sister, Eileen Murphy. Jack was pre-deceased by his eldest son, John Steven Lantz.
A Family Remembrance will be held in June.

Tinton Falls - Robert passed away peacefully on May 19, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick. Bob was born on March 2, 1939 in New York City. He attended Manhattan College where he graduated first in his class with a degree in engineering. Bob enjoyed working for Bechtel Engineering where he spent his entire career- 39 years. There he worked numerous projects all around the world. Bob and his former wife Agnes, raised their family in Leonardo.
He is predeceased by his parents, his daughter Margaret, and sister, Betsy. He is survived by his son, Rob and his wife Therese; his daughter, Susan and her husband, Andrew and his three grandchildren Jacob, Gabrielle and Ian. He is also survived by his brother Thomas and nephews Russel and Jeff. Bob loved to spend time with his family and will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Bob will be reposing at Evergreen Memorial Funeral Home, 1735 Route 35, Middletown, NJ 07748 on Thursday May 24, 2018 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday morning at 10am at St Agnes Church, May 25, 2018. Interment to follow at Bayview Cemetery.

Fond du Lac - Sister Patricia Scanlan, CSA, formerly known as Sister Malachy, died peacefully May 16, 2018, at St. Francis Home.
Patricia was born in Riverdale, New York, on March 27, 1933, to William Scanlan and Irene Magill Scanlan. She was raised in a family of six, including two boys and four girls.
Patricia entered St. Agnes Convent in 1950 after graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, New York. She made her profession of vows as Sister Malachy in the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes on August 15, 1953.
She received a BS in Education from Marian College of Fond du Lac in 1962. Over the years which followed, Sister Patricia took numerous theology courses and earned an MA in Theology from
Manhattan College, Bronx, New York. She also received a Certificate in Youth Ministry from Douglaston Seminary in Long Island, New York.
Sister Patricia was a teacher for 36 years. Having taught most grade levels in the elementary schools
served by the congregation in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, New York, and Kansas, she also participated in religious education programs in the parishes wherever she lived. At St. Mary's Springs, Fond du Lac,
Wisconsin, and at Marian High, Hays, Kansas, Sister Patricia was a religion teacher as well as a physical education instructor and coach.
She worked in the Youth and Aged Ministry Office at Sacred Heart Parish, Yonkers, New York. As a member of LAMP Catholic Ministries of New York, Sister Patricia was assigned to St. Joseph Parish, Yonkers, New York, where she did Parish Evangelization and was Pastoral Associate. Service in LAMP was energizing and thoroughly engaging for her.
Sister Patricia Scanlan was preceded in death by her parents William Scanlan and Irene Magill Scanlan; her brothers William (Bill) Scanlan and John (Jack) Scanlan; and her sisters Joan Dugandzic and Anne Lynch.
She is survived by her sister Gerry Lou O'Connor, her nieces and nephews, and the Sisters of St. Agnes, with whom she lived, prayed and ministered.
Visitation for Sister Patricia Scanlan will take place May 25, 2018, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in Nazareth Court and Center, 375 Gillett Street, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. A prayer service will be held on May 25, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the Nazareth Center Chapel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on May 25, 2018, in St. Francis Home Chapel, 33 Everett Street, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, at 2:00 p.m. Father Ken Smits, Capuchin, will be the presider. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Springs Cemetery.
Memorials can be directed to the Sisters of St. Agnes Development Office, 320 County Road K, Fond du Lac, WI 54937.
The Sisters of St. Agnes are grateful to the nurses and staff of Nazareth Court and Center/St. Francis Home, and the staff of Hospice Hope, for their care of Sister Patricia in her last year. Zacherl Funeral Home is serving the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Agnes.

Good Morning All,
Nancy Maksomski asks for her prayers for her Dad. Dave will be having his Pacemaker replaced today, Tuesday. The MDs are hopeful they will be sending him home today. However, there is an additional procedure he needs to have done and depending upon how the Pacemaker replacement goes, they may admit him for a few days. In addition to the Pacemaker, after having his left knee fixed, his right kneecap cracked and will have to be replaced sooner rather than later but there needs to be at least a month between the Pacemaker replacement and the knee operation to prevent infection. Nancy's Dad has had a rough year but he remains in good spirits. You may recall that just before Easter he had Knee surgery and we hoped he would not be hiding any Easter Eggs in the trees for his Grandchildren. We pray that replacing his pacemaker goes as hoped and that his other health issues may be taken care of soon.
I ask for your prayers for a dear friend of mine who is experiencing some health issues for which the MDs have yet to find the cause. They continue to test her and feel that she is healthy in spite of what is transpiring. We pray that the MDs are able to pinpoint the cause of her discomforting symptoms and able to treat her as necessary.

In today’s print edition of the NY Times there is an obituary for Bill Cannon, a former Heisman Trophy Winner. According to the Obituary Cannon was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame, but before he was inducted, he was arrested and plead guilty to a felony. The board chairman of the Hall, Manhattan College’s Vincent dePaul Draddy,'30, RIP ( Draddy Gym) denied him induction, over ruling his election to it.

Leslie Daniel Maxim, 77, of Princeton Junction, NJ, passed away peacefully after a battle with cancer on Friday, May 18, 2018, at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro.
Born in New York, NY, Dan has resided in Princeton Junction for the past 43 years. Dan lived an extraordinary life. He played a piano solo in Carnegie Hall at age 11. He was a pilot, an instrument flight instructor, and could land a multi-engine seaplane on lakes. He was one of the small cadre of glider pilots to fly above 25,000 feet and he flew over Pikes Peak. He was fluent in Spanish and was featured on a major television program in Chile.
He believed in public service and was a tireless volunteer for over 30 years with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was an expert in coastal navigation and wrote several navigation text books for the US Coast Guard, the Auxiliary, and NOAA. He was the only Auxiliary volunteer to be nominated to attend the US Coast Guard Academy’s Loran-C Engineering Course. He traveled the world, logging over three million miles on commercial planes - enough to fly to the moon and back six times.
Dan was not a man of privilege. He worked for candy maker Fanny Farmer full-time while taking a regular engineering course load at Manhattan College. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering at the age of 20 and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi. He went on to earn three Masters Degrees and a Doctorate of Philosophy, Operations Research from New York University. Dan founded his own technical consulting firm, Everest Consulting Associates, and operated it successfully for 38 years. Dan’s firm conducted research in health, safety and environmental quality, and risk assessment. His firm had a who’s who list of corporate clients.
He was the author of over 200 publications, including books and technical papers, and served on numerous scientific advisory boards. Dan was dedicated to improving recreational boating safety. In addition to holding a host of leadership positions in the Auxiliary, Dan wrote a Nautical Chart Users’ Manual and developed an internet course on marine navigation. He conducted countless search and rescue missions.
He was the Chairman of the National Boating Safety Advisory Council for the US Coast Guard and former National Directorate Commodore and Assistant National Commodore of Recreational Boating with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Dan was inducted to the National Boating Council’s Boating Safety Hall of Fame and received multiple Public Service commendations from the Commandant of the US Coast Guard. He was the recipient of the Bunzyl Boating Safety Award from the American Boat & Yacht Council Foundation.
Dan had numerous memberships including the Cosmos Club, National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, the Coast Guard Aviation Association, the US Naval Institute, and the US Navy League. He was a Colonel for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Predeceased by his parents, Leslie Morgan Maxim and Lillian (Lester) Maxim; he leaves behind to carry on his legacy, his beloved wife of 56 years, Karen (Dunne) Maxim; his daughters, Lauren Maxim Van Wazer and her husband Thomas Van Wazer, and Lysandra Danielle Maxim; and his grandchildren, William Maxim Van Wazer and his wife Elizabeth Van Wazer, and Thomas Maxim Van Wazer.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at A.S. Cole Son & Co. Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Cranbury, NJ 08512. In addition, there will be a Memorial Service in September in Cape May.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dan’s memory to the Dr. Leslie Daniel Maxim Fund for Boating Safety. Age 82, of New Hope, PA passed away on May 19, 2018 from complications of ALS(Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Don was born and raised in the Hamilton Grange section of New York City; and attended Annunciation School and Rice High School. Don graduated from Manhattan College, New York University and Fordham University with degrees in Chemistry, Business and Law. He was a member of New York Bar Association. Don was a patent attorney for Mobil Oil in New York City and Alexandria, VA for 35 years before retiring in 1994.
As a child, Don grew up in New York City and enjoyed playing stickball and was a fanatic Brooklyn Dodger fan. Don loved his Brooklyn/LA Dodgers and was an avid collector of Dodger memorabilia throughout his life. A cat lover, Don owned many cats during his life, and was a volunteer for many cat shelters over the years.
He is predeceased by his wife, Jodi (Stenz) Howard, his sister, Barbara Howard, brother, Ronald Howard, and parents, Joseph and Jean Howard. He is survived by his sister-in- law, Kathleen Falkenstein, brothers-in-law, Daniel Falkenstein, Joseph Stenz and Louis Barr; nephews and nieces, many devoted friends and his devoted care taker Terri Nagel.

Josephine A. Rappe 85, of Ossining, N.Y. died on April 30, 2018. She was born on March 14, 1933 to the late Michael and Catherine (nee Ginty) Davey in County Sligo, Ireland. Josephine was a retired Guidance Counselor with the NYC Schools.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Thomas D. Rappe in 2004 and also predeceased by three sisters, Mary, Kathleen and Betty. Josephine is survived by her loving children, Thomas (Janet) Rappe of Boynton Beach, FL., Michael (Margaret) Rappe of Edgemont, N.Y., Joseph Rappe of Greenwich, CT. and Mary Leddy of Stony Point, N.Y. one brother, Dennis Davey and four sisters, Margaret, Sarahann, Helen and Maura. Also survived by her seven cherished grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Mark, Morgan, Jennifer, Kevin and Alexander.

Peter Sweeney has shared the sad news of the Death of Mrs. Ruth Ann Abbatiello. Mrs. Abbatiello's Obituary is shared below. Mrs. Abbatiello is the Mother of Reverend Robert Abbatiello, one of our most respected and appreciated speakers at our Manhattan College Reality Retreat.
Mrs. Abbatiello was called home this past Friday, May 18, 2018. We pray for her, her husband, Brandy, Father Robert and their Family as the Family mourn the loss of their loved one. We pray that the Family find peace in the certain knowledge that she is at peace In God's Eternal Embrace in the Kingdom of Heaven. Following is Mrs. Abbatiello's Obituary. Thank you. God Bless.

Obituary for Ruth Ann Abbatiello
WAPPINGERS FALLS – Ruth Ann Abbatiello, a local area resident for over 30 years, died on Friday, May 18, 2018 in Pleasant Valley. She was 87.
She was born on December 15, 1930 in Manhattan. She grew up in Yonkers, where she also raised her family and remained there until the 1980s. In 1950, she married Brandy Abbatiello at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Ruth’s hobbies included gardening and baking, but above all else, she cherished spending time with her family. She had a generous spirit and throughout her life contributed to countless charitable efforts and organizations.
Survivors include her husband, Brandy, at home; her daughter, Joanne Michelin & her husband Thomas of Hopewell Junction; her son, Joseph Abbatiello & his wife Pina of Wappingers Falls; her daughter, Susan Alfiero & her husband Carmel of Pleasant Valley; her son, Fr. Robert Abbatiello, O.F.M.,Cap. of Yonkers; her grandchildren and their spouses: Joseph (Melissa), Brandi (Chris), Paul (Renee), Alison (James), Nicholas (Michelle), Matthew (Michelle), Lawrence (Lauren), and Sara; 13 great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives & friends.
Ruth was predeceased by her grandson, Thomas Michelin, Jr., in 2008.
Calling hours were held from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. on Monday, May 21 at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at 10 a.m. on Tueday, May 22 at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Entombment will follow in the Community Mausoleum at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

[JR: Well, I’m a nerdy introvert and, as I’ve explained, I don’t participate in “organized religious activities”. Walking down the aisle in the Chapel would be hypocritical. Last reunion I went to 25 years ago, I sat outside with some other of my like-minded classmates. Don’t want to do that again. I do this as a service to my fellow Jaspers. And, the funniest part is that the “development office” (aka fund raisers) really object to my activities since it “scoops” their efforts. I know many at Alma Mater don’t share that opinion. I tried to explain the concept of “first help; then, be helped” to them many times but they rejected that advice. Dona Nobis Pacem. ]

The above give us a little grounding as we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day, barbecues, runs to the beach, joy and laughter, Family and
Friends, none of which would be begrudged by those who gave so much so that we could celebrate in freedom. They only ask that we remember them and not forget. And hopefully, so we do.
If you did not hear live, President Ronald Reagan's speech at Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day, 1986, nor have not heard or read it since, it is worth your trouble to pull it up on this Memorial Day. The majesty, emotion, honor and remembrance that live forever
In that sacred place gave his words special meaning in tribute to the Men and Women we remembe on Memorial Day.
In his speech, President Reagan, quoted Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes who served in the Civil War who said:
" At the grave of a hero we end, not with sorrow at the inevitable loss, but with the contagion of his courage; and with a kind of desparate
Joy, we go back to the fight."
As we approach Memorial day, perhaps we may let those words inform our thoughts, remembrance and prayers of thanks for our men and women who served and serve, particularly those who never returned. We need to remember as well, in our prayers, the Parents, Wives, Husbands, Fathers, Mothers, Sons and Daughters left behind that will always mourn their loss and never forget.
I have attached a remembrance that I shared in 2017 and I hope that you do not mind my doing so. Thank you. God Bless.

Subject: Apologize to No One But Remember
Good Afternoon Fellow Americans,
Memorial Day, like Veteran's Day, always brings me to tears, a feeling of great pride and loss pervades, remembering can be painful but we will never forget our Veterans: " All gave some, some gave all."
I am taking the liberty of sharing with you the following which was sent to me by a good and respected friend, Fellow Jasper, Ed Riely. Some of us have seen some of these places, some have seen some of these Photographs, many of us have never seen them all brought together in remembrance and tribute. They are incredible and magnificent places, justifiably so, where so many of our heroes rest. They are beautiful in their serenity, overwhelming in the emotions that arise upon seeing them and a rightous tribute to our Fallen. No, we will never forget.
