POSITRACTION: A "cheap" 3D-printed home is a breakthrough

This cheap 3D-printed home is a start for the 1 billion who lack shelter
Printed by Vulcans on planet Earth
By Tamara Warren @tamaratam  Mar 12, 2018, 8:39am EDT

*** begin quote ***

Food, water, and shelter are basic human needs, but 1.2 billion people in the world live without adequate housing, according to a report by the World Resources Institute’s Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. Today at SXSW, an Austin-based startup will unveil its approach to combat that deficiency by using low-cost 3D printing as a potential solution.

ICON has developed a method for printing a single-story 650-square-foot house out of cement in only 12 to 24 hours, a fraction of the time it takes for new construction. If all goes according to plan, a community made up of about 100 homes will be constructed for residents in El Salvador next year. The company has partnered with New Story, a nonprofit that is vested in international housing solutions. “We have been building homes for communities in Haiti, El Salvador, and Bolivia,” Alexandria Lafci, co-founder of New Story, tells The Verge.

This has to be a great breakthrough for humanity.

While the price is still “too high” for the poor, it might be low enough to start the improvement process. And, we know that “evil capitalism” will drive down the cost if the Gooferment doesn’t interfere (i.e., computers versus telephones).

Maybe in the foreseeable future, it can be $40 rather than $4,000?

SANDUSKY, Ohio - The last thing Jim Cundari had on his mind while fighting Japanese in the Philippine mountains during World War II was gathering a few battlefield souvenirs.

Combat, for soldiers of the 161st Infantry Regiment in 1945 was costly and fierce, and as Cundari, 99, recently recalled, "I would not pick up a souvenir on the battlefield because you had to lug it with you, and my life was more important than souvenirs."

However, he would later obtain a little something that worked out quite well for his honeymoon.

The long road to that modest pay-off started when the New Jersey native was drafted in 1943. He had previously been turned down twice for military service because of his vision, but Cundari said the standards were later eased due to increasing needs for manpower.

*** and ***

The 1940 graduate of Manhattan College, with a degree in business administration and accounting, also taught the GIs basic bookkeeping and accounting for possible use in a job back home.

*** and ***

After the war, Cundari worked as an accountant for General Motors and was transferred to Sandusky in 1965. He retired in 1982.

Cundari will be 100 years old this December 21, "if I make it," he said with a chuckle.

In looking back on his military service, he concluded, "It was an experience I would not want to repeat, but I'm happy that I was in.

"I was one of, I guess 16 million service people, so I did nothing extraordinary," he added. "I was just an average soldier."

ENDNOTE: Innocent man executed; DNA exculpatory

Injustice by lethal injection: 'Stocking Strangler' is executed for raping and killing seven women DESPITE Mail On Sunday reporter uncovering vital DNA evidence that he claims proves his innocence
  • Carlton Gary, 67, known as the 'Stocking strangler' was executed on Thursday
  • He supposedly murdered seven women and raped another in Columbus, Georgia
  • His execution came despite DNA tests proving that the 67-year-old was innocent
By David Rose for The Mail on Sunday
PUBLISHED: 18:17 EDT, 17 March 2018 | UPDATED: 03:50 EDT, 18 March 2018

*** begin quote ***

At about 10pm last Thursday, Carlton Gary, the prisoner condemned as the ‘Stocking Strangler’, a man who supposedly murdered seven women and raped another in Columbus, Georgia, was hustled into a white breeze block building at the state prison in Jackson – the death house.

*** and ***

Various appeal courts refused to examine evidence of Carlton Gary’s innocence, which included:
  • The DNA test: The first victim, Gertrude Miller, identified Gary as her attacker in the most dramatic point of his trial. But DNA testing on semen on her nightdress and sheets proves she was raped by someone else.
  • The crime lab sabotage: A semen sample from another victim, locked away for years, was rendered useless after someone at the Georgia state crime lab smeared their own semen over the precious slide.
  • The bite mould: Also hidden for years was a mould of the killer’s teeth, made from a bite wound on another victim. It did not match Gary’s teeth.
  • The shoe print: The killer left shoeprints on an air-conditioning unit at one of the crime scenes. They were size 9, but Gary has size 14 feet – as MoS reporter David Rose testified at a 2014 appeal hearing.
  • The hidden lab papers: Documents unearthed 14 years after the 1986 trial show that the killer was a ‘non-secretor’ – a condition that means a person does not secrete his blood group marker into other bodily fluids. Gary is a secretor – as David Rose proved when he smuggled a sample of Gary’s semen out of prison after visiting him on death row.

I found that, if as reported, the “confession” is suspect and must be deemed “bogus” at best; criminal action by the police at worst.

Hence, my renewed objection to the “death penalty”. When the Gooferment makes an OBVIOUS mistake and refuses to correct it, the “innocent” is no longer alive to get justice.

Every honest person should be outraged.

Argh!
