*** begin quote ***

There’s more than enough doubt as to whether peace will ever be possible in the Middle East, but this video could inspire naysayers with some much-needed hope.

Koolulam is an organization that is dedicated to bringing Israelis together from across all ages, races, religions, and demographics for mass singing events.

*** end quote ***

One of my core values is “peace”. I’m not sure that “perfect harmony” is possible in the Middle East, but maybe those “zealots” on each side can stop killing each other?

This is an attempt to bridge the divide and, even if it has limited success, every success is a step in the right direction.

Good Evening All,

As Andy says, he is a strong believer in the power of prayer and it was your prayers and those of others that guided the Surgeon's hands to success. Thank you all.

Please keep Chris in your prayers as he begins his recovery as we pray for a speedy recovery free of complication. A prayer of thanks from each of us would be a good thing, Thank you. God Bless.

Browne, John Henry [MC1965 RIP] condolences

[JR: One of the sad (happy?) self-assumed duties I perform as the CIC is to “bury the dead”. I report the obits, share them with Jasper Colon’s pray group, and put a note in the obit’s guestbook if there is one. As a result, depending upon the guestbook site, I get an email when it’s going offline. Many times my note is the only entry; that makes me sad. On occasion, I get a reply from the family and, if appropriate, I share it. In this case, I copied all the notes to a page on the “back lot”. I did that because the number and quality of the memories was impressive. It demonstrates the impact that our fellow alum had. I could not let this pass without calling it to your attention and memorialize it as it goes “offline” shortly. Thanks to Google’s generous free sites, I can capture it. Requiescat In Pacem Jasper Browne.]

COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) about Presidential parallels

2018-Mar-05

Dear F. John,

I read your recent endnote about the Weimar Republic and gun control almost immediately after seeing the movie, The Post, about the publication of the Pentagon Papers. First, the reminder of the lies and obfuscation - from Truman through Nixon - that led to the full blown war that so seared our generation and killed so many of our contemporaries was very anger and sadness provoking. Perhaps even more frightening were the eerie parallels between Nixon and Trump about demonizing the free press and thinking that the best course was to attempt to suppress the press.

Toner, Mike (MC1972)

# - # - # - # - #

[JR: Well, I view the “Presidents” as threat to freedom in the USA. And, like the ersatz anti-war movement, the “press” is not free but a captive of the ultra-left wing of the “democratic” party with the exception of Fox News. Fox News is an anomaly, but is an organ of “big Gooferment” too. Hollywood is an extension of the same ultra-left group think imho. Thankfully, the inet allows bypassing the “echo chambers”.  Nixon and Trump are not the worst; as bad as they might be. It takes real “work” to break into my personal “worst” list. I think DJT45 is exposing the “Deep State”, the corrupt media, and Democan/Republicrat politicians for what they really are — wanna be tyrants who are parasites on the hard working “We, The Sheeple”. Sadly, I don’t think “We, The Sheeple” are smart enough to escape the chains that politicians and bureaucrats have forged on them by decades of “free stuff”. It would seem that hard times are inevitable for the “American Experiment”. Thanks for the response; it gets lonely in my “ivory tower”.]

JNEWS: Austin, Nicole [MC2006] GM Cascade Hollow Distilling

March 5, 2018

and-distiller-of-cascade-hollow-distilling-co--the-home-of-george-dickel-tennessee-whisky-300608132.html

Austin Brings Entrepreneurial Spirit, Vision & Distilling Expertise to George Dickel Tennessee Whisky and Cascade Hollow Distilling Co.

TULLAHOMA, Tenn., March 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- When Nicole Austin was hand selected by distilling icon Dave Pickerell to be the first employee for his spirits consulting firm in 2012, the spirits industry took note of her fresh thinking and strategic vision.  When The New York Times dubbed her "Bourbon's Master of the Craft" in 2014, the industry applauded her distilling expertise.  When the rye whiskey she helped create won Double Gold at the 2015 San Francisco Spirits Competition, they celebrated her creativity and innovation.  And, this week, when she was named General Manager and Distiller for the newly formed Cascade Hollow Distilling Co., Austin knew she'd found a home in Tennessee.

What was formerly known as the George Dickel Distillery will now be called Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. – the home of George Dickel Tennessee Whisky and future innovation spirits.  George Dickel's "Handmade the Hard Way" approach to making whisky will remain the same and Austin will be charged with overseeing the brand's 148-year legacy of making Tennessee's smoothest, award winning craft whisky.  As General Manager of Cascade Hollow Distilling Co., she will establish the vision of what this new company can be and ignite commercial and innovation strategies for the flagship George Dickel brand, future innovation spirits and the distillery.

"There are so many reasons why I know this position will be a great fit for me – from the jaw dropping beauty of Cascade Hollow to the incredible history of George Dickel," said Austin.  "But, ultimately, it is the freedom to make Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. my home that made up my mind.  As a distiller, strategist and mentor, I've worn a lot of hats in my career which have prepared me for this moment.  Now, it's time for me to draw from those experiences and build a business that creates a fundamental step change in how people think about Tennessee Whisky.  I'm proud to be here and ready to get to work."

"Nicole is absolutely perfect to lead Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. because she brings so much to the table," said Sophie Kelly, SVP of North American Whisk(e)y for Diageo.  "Not only is she an established chemical engineer and distiller, she has a real business mind, an entrepreneurial spirit and a true vision for the future of the company, its brands and the category.  Most importantly, she has all the energy, passion and tenacity to make it real.  George Dickel is a hidden gem in our whisk(e)y portfolio and we're confident Nicole will take it to the next level as she transforms Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. into something truly special."

Austin graduated from Manhattan College with a major in Chemical Engineering in 2006, before landing her position as a Master Blender for Kings County Distillery in 2010.  She then joined The Oak View Spirits consulting firm where she handled everything from raw material sourcing to contract negotiations.  Most recently, Nicole served as Project Commissioning Engineer for William Grant & Sons at the Tullamore Distillery in Ireland.  She's also been a fierce advocate for the distilling industry as a founding board member of the American Craft Spirits Association and co-chair of Legislative, Convention and State Guild Committees.

John J. Morley

White Plains - John J. Morley, born December 22, 1930 to John Morley and Mary McGuiness in Queens, NY, passed away Saturday, March 3rd, surrounded by his family.

He was a graduate of Manhattan Prep in 1948 and Manhattan College in 1952. John began a 51 year career in stadium concessions in 1944 working in Yankee Stadium as a peanut vendor and he progressed from peanuts to hot dogs, beer and ultimately to management with Harry M. Stevens Inc., inventor of the hot dog and vendor to the world, caterer extraordinaire, concessionaire at ballparks, arenas and racetracks across America.

After opening RFK Stadium (Washington DC) in 1961 he returned to NY where he opened Shea Stadium with the NY Mets and NY Jets. From baseballs and footballs to Papal visits and Presidents, from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to wrestling and roller derby, John oversaw the fan experience for the tens of millions of people who attended events at Shea from 1964 to 2008. Working from his base at Shea, John also managed HMS activities at the Nassau Coliseum, Madison Square Garden, the NY Coliseum, the Meadowlands complex, Fenway Park and many other sports venues.

John Morley's professional life was characterized by a commitment to excellence, a commitment to respect for fellow employees, and, a commitment to making the best possible experience for all fans -especially as reflected in the smiling faces of children enjoying that first ballpark hot dog or wearing their team's hat. His commitment to employee excellence is demonstrated by the tens of thousands of men and women whose working careers began in a stadium, many of whom have chosen careers in the service sector and many of whom have chosen the experience as a foundation for other industries; his commitment to the fan experience is reflected in the many new services, menu items and quality programs that enable fans to maximize their stadium experience. Mr. Morley will be missed by all those he has served and especially by those with whom he has worked. His commitment to excellence will continue through the legacy he has left after half a century of service to sports fans and music lovers.

John was a member of the Old Guard of White Plains served in the Army from 1948 to 1957. He was an avid golfer and traveler crisscrossing the US and the globe with Mary, his wife of 65 years who passed in September 2017.

He is survived by sons James (Geraldine) of Tappan, NY and Thomas (Maureen) of Suffern, NY, daughter Susan (Mark) Sweeney of Chester Springs, PA, grandchildren Brian, Terence, James, Brendan, Moira and Kieran, and great-grandchildren Avery, James and Olivia; and, step-grandchildren Hillary, Lauren and Kurt. He was predeceased by his brother Wiliam. Visitation will be Wednesday March 7th from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows on Thursday March 8th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in the memory of John J. Morley for a scholarship fund to Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 920 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY 10605.

Maryknoll: Theologian Joseph Fahey Discusses Pilgrimmage To Peace
The fascinating and challenging story about Charles Liteky Told At Maryknoll Society Center April 15.
By Mike Virgintino, Patch Contributor | Mar 6, 2018 10:00 am ET | Updated Mar 6, 2018 11:00 am ET

Father Charles J. Liteky served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army and received the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. On July 29, 1986, he placed the medal at the base of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., as he took the next step in his personal pilgrimage from a Roman Catholic priest, military chaplain and Vietnam hawk to a civilian warrior for peace.

Dr. Joseph Fahey will speak about Charles Liteky's Pilgrimage to Peace and the publishing of Mr. Liteky's memoir, Renunciation, on Sunday, April 15, at 2:30 p.m. as part of this year's edition of the Maryknoll Speakers Series. Presented by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers at the Maryknoll Society Center (55 Ryder Road in Ossining), the series is free and open to the public. Reservations are requested and can be made by email (MaryknollSpeakersSeries@maryknoll.org), or by calling 914-941-7636 extension 2445. Click here for additional information about the Maryknoll Speakers Series and directions.

Liteky's Memoir

A former Maryknoll seminarian who recently retired after more than 50 years as a professor of religious studies at Manhattan College, Dr. Fahey befriended Charles Liteky during the Vietnam War years. The professor invited the chaplain to speak before his college class, and Father Liteky arrived on campus in his military uniform to meet students to exchange ideas and answer questions about the war and the role of a Catholic chaplain in the military.

Mr. Liteky eventually wrote but never published his memoir about his path to peace. Dr. Fahey encouraged him to publish the story and the process began as Mr. Liteky was in failing health. Upon Mr. Liteky's death during January 2017, Dr. Fahey followed through on his personal promise to ensure the publication of the memoir. In Renunciation, Mr. Liteky discusses his journey to a life as a peace activist who was jailed for his convictions. Dr. Fahey, in his presentation, relates the fascinating and challenging story about a man of his times who had the courage to change and to embrace the Gospel of Peace.

Founder Of Peace Studies Program

Dr. Fahey founded Manhattan College's labor studies undergraduate program and co-founded its peace studies undergraduate program. He also has taught at Fordham University, Vassar College and The Maryknoll School of Theology. Dr. Fahey co-founded Catholic Scholars for Worker Justice and Pax Christi USA. He served the United Nations as a Non-Governmental Organization representative for the University Center for Peace Research (Vienna) and he served on the Advisory Council on Justice and Peace of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Fahey is the author of several books about war, justice, non-violence and Christian justice, including War and the Christian Conscience: Where Do You Stand? published by Orbis Books, the publishing unit of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.

The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers follow Jesus in serving the poor and others in need in more than 20 countries that include the U.S. All Catholics are called to mission through baptism and confirmation, and Maryknoll's mission education outreach in parishes and schools throughout the country engages U.S. Catholics in mission through vocations, prayer, donations and as volunteers. MC Prof, Kevin Ahern, is quoted in a New Way's Ministry article concerning a lack of engagement among Catholic theologians with Fr. James Martin's (SJ) book, "Building a Bridge". The book, concerning the Church's relationship with the LGBTQ community, has been the subject of some controversy - even though Fr. Martin does not break with traditional church teachings.

Mike Mongin fondly remembered
Former Fonda-Fultonville coach, administrator died last week
Jim Schiltz | March 6, 2018

*** begin quote ***

Long before Mike Mongin's push for classification football in Section II, he was pointing Perth's new program in the right direction and winning championships at Fonda-Fultonville.

He was a man who got things done in the gridiron game, yet also as a high school administrator and as a community activist.

"He was uncanny as a leader," said Alex Mancini, who quarterbacked three of Mongin's league title-winning football teams in the early 1970s. "He had an aura when he walked into a room. He could get the best out of people."

Mongin died Friday in Daytona Beach, Fla., at the age of 74, leaving behind his wife of 49 years, Elaine; daughter Samantha and her fiance Tom Neri; son Michael and his wife Jodi; four grandchildren and a lengthy list of do-good deeds. There were some few knew of.

"The guy was involved in a million things," Mancini said. "What's not in the obit is some of the other things he did. He'd visit people in the hospital. Some guy no one knew about. He made all sorts of donations. He was generous almost to a fault. He never blew his own horn."

*** and ***

Mongin served as Fonda-Fultonville's athletic director from 1971-78 and served as its high school principal from 1979 until his retirement in 2002. From 1997-2000 he was a member of the Johnstown Board of Education.

"He was one of those driving forces in the section," Mancini said of the Johnstown High School and Manhattan College graduate, who served on the local and state high school executive committees. "When we had the retirement dinner for him people were asked to use one word to describe him, and someone said, 'Unyielding.' He would stand up for what he thought was right. He would argue that point until the cows come home."

Mongin was among the first class to be inducted into the Fonda-Fultonville Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. The "Legends Class" also included Mancini, Higgins, John West, Dave Petersen, Bill Bowler and John Boshart.

"There has to be 1,000 great memories and laughs along the way," Mancini said. "Too many to recount. You could almost write a book. He was quite a guy who was greatly involved in Section II athletics."

Mongin was a charter member of the Republican National Committee. He served on the Fulton County Board of Supervisors (1974-1980) and was Chairman of the Board in 1976. He was Republican City Chairman for two years and was appointed to a nine-year term as Trustee of Fulton Montgomery Community College. He served as Chairman of the College Board in 1986. He was a director on the Johnstown Hospital and Johnstown Hospital Foundation boards. He was the Fulton County OTB director for 10 years (1998-2008). He also served on the Gloversville YMCA board of directors and the Middle States visiting committee, andlent a hand to the Knights of Columbus, Eagles,  Moose, Sons of the American Legion and Sons of the AM Vets.

"Some might say he was larger than life," said Higgins, who was Fonda-Fultonville's high school principal before Mongin assumed the position. "He had that booming voice. He had his serious side, but there were a lot of laughs. He was an all-around good guy. You couldn't help but like him."

Born in Niagara Falls and raised in New York City, Mongin attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School before his familly moved to Johnstown. Following his graduation from Manhattan, he  began his 37-year career in education at Perth where he taught science and health before becoming its athletic director and head football coach.

Higgins said plans are in the works for a memorial tribute.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Chris and family

2018-Mar-07

Good Evening All,

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I share the passing of Chris Devlin who has been in our prayers and had been in recovery from delicate Surgery. Chris's Dad, Andy, shared the news with Terry Gaffney and me. God's Plan is sometimes only visible to us as it developes and it is at times such as this that we find ourselves perhaps disagreeing. We can't know the pain that Chris's Dad is feeling unless we have experienced a loss such as he and the Family have just been through. Andy is a strong believer in prayer and he is a man who trusts in God. It is the strength and commitment of  Andy's bebiefs that will help bring him and his Family through this terrible loss. We pray for the repose of the soul of Chris Devlin, beloved Son. We pray that Andy and his Family find some peace in the sure and certain knowledge that Chris is at rest in God's Eternal Embrace in the Kingdom of Heaven and that the Family are able in time to celebrate Chris's life and the time they had him in their lives. God Speed Chris. Thank you all from the Devlin Family. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: Gun rights activists are not stupid enough to disarm themselves

2018-Mar-10

Vilifying Gun Owners Doesn’t Lead to a Better Society
Progressives push their luck with their totalitarian insistence that everybody is with them or against them on guns and so much else.
J.D. Tuccille | March 5, 2018

*** begin quote ***

Last week, outdoor gear retailer REI became the latest business to pledge its fealty to the raging culture war against wrongthink. It's a high-stakes move that's unlikely to end well for the activists pushing the effort.

*** and ***

"The NRA is so engrained in the American culture now because of their very successful messaging of, 'Don't take away my gun' or 'You're infringing on my Second Amendment rights,'" actress Alyssa Milano told an interviewer about the push to get NRATV dropped. "What a campaign like this allows is for a cultural hack."

*** and ***

David Brooks sees the danger of a reaction, warning that "illiberalism breeds illiberalism." He suggests that progressives risk a "political backlash that could make Donald Trump look like Adlai Stevenson."

That would be quite the booby prize if progressives manage to pull it off. Instead of achieving their moment of triumph by forcing people and businesses to declare loyalty to the cause, partisans playing at heavy-handed speech and thought police might instead reap the whirlwind (and so will we all).

And if any progressives really care about the gun issue, they should consider that vilifying gun owners, demanding professions of fealty, and attempting to silence dissent guarantee that few if any ideological opponents would ever disarm. In an all-or-nothing political environment, they'd have to be suicidal to even consider the idea.

*** end quote ***

I don’t understand how (1) the “gun control” folks forget the genocides; and (2) the “gun control” folks think that “gun rights” folks won’t defend their natural or “pre-Constitutional” rights.

It’s going to get pretty messy.

Everyone should remember the immortal George Carlin explains how “the Game is Rigged”: “It’s a Big Club and You Ain’t in It”!

We’re all a minority in some way or another.

“First they came …” is a famous statement and provocative poem attributed to pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis' rise to power and the subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...

Remember Kristallnacht — THE “NIGHT OF BROKEN GLASS” — it can happen here.

"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? . . ." --- Alexander Solzhenitsyn
