That’s why we need women in civil society. They can do amazing things if we don’t let our “memes and paradigms” — a fancy way of saying prejudices, preconceived notions, and plain old stupidity — get in their way.

“People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.” George Bernard Shaw

I’m NOT saying lower “the standards”. That’s equally stupid and condescending. (It’s like patting someone on the head and saying “it’s ok; you tried”. Argh!)

Standards have to be factually related to a requirement. And equally enforced. (I’ve seen some police and firefighters who would make the cut.)

For everyone’s safety and well-being.

Great job by these firefighters and all those who do the “tough jobs”.

MNEWS: NBA Hall of Fame referee started with Alma Mater game

Settling in Oceanside, NBA Hall of Fame referee recalls a lifetime of basketball
He called the shots
Posted January 19, 2018
By Peter Belfiore

*** begin quote ***

Roughly midway through Emanuel “Manny Sokal” Sokolofsky’s 13-year career as an NBA referee, the now 88-year-old Oceanside newcomer made a bad call.

*** and ***

In 1952, after serving a two-year stint in the Army, Sokolofsky began working at a 7 Up bottling plant in Mineola, commuting via the Long Island Rail Road, and for years he continued to referee night and weekend games. “Anything I could get,” he recalled.

He caught a big break when he was asked to fill in for a no-show and call a scrimmage match between City College and Manhattan College at Madison Square Garden. There he caught the eye of City College coach Dave Polanksy. “Where have you been all my life?” Sokolofsky recalled being asked after Polanksy learned that he was calling his first college game.

Sokolofsky continued officiating college games, and while working a New York University scrimmage in 1964, he attracted the attention of a veteran NBA referee — and the newly appointed league supervisor of officials — Sid Borgia.

Many of you know but some may not….14 years ago my mom was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Her doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) told her she could live a long time with this type of leukemia. I would say 3 years after being diagnosed she went through 9 months of chemo and she tolerated it pretty well. The chemo set her levels back and she was doing fairly well until May of 2016 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her leukemia levels were very high so they tried to toggle the chemo to treat both cancers and she couldn't handle it. The doctors, nurses and staff at MSKCC were nothing short of fabulous. The research that is being done in the hospital is incredible. In the next month our niece will be joining the staff as a nurse in the NYC hospital. Katherine Juliano- they are lucky to have you and you will be a great addition for them. When i was asked to join this team I thought this was a no brainer…. any help to increase their research funding is something I am interested in helping with. (and I also love to spin!)

I will be riding in the Cycle for Survival event on February 3, 2018 to help raise funds to fight rare cancer, and I would like any support you can give. Approximately 50% of people with cancer are fighting a rare cancer, and too often have limited or no treatment options. With your help, we can ensure the discovery of new and better treatments. Thanks for your support.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Tom McCarthy's Dad

2018-Jan-22

Good Morning All,

Heartfelt thanks from Tom McCarthy for your " Well wishes and continued prayers " for his Dad. Mr. McCarthy had his surgery this past Wednesday. A 4.5 hour procedure that yielded some important information but did not have the desired result that we nave been praying for. After extensively looking at the Tumor and its placement with all available technology, it has been determined that the Tumor is inoperable as Big Tom’s quality of life, post-op would be extremely poor. He was expected to be released from the Step-down recovery unit by today. He will be on the mend from his surgery for the next 2 or 3 week before the Doctors begin the next phase of treatment.

The operation showed some positive results. The Tumor has indeed been reduced in size by the previous two weeks of the initial treatment and there has been no Metastases. The Doctors have not said it officially, but, they would probably reclassify from Stage 3a to 2b. The Family is remaining positive and the doctors are encouraged by the success of the past treatment and believe Radiation/Chemo will have an effect upon keeping it controlled.

As Tom says, the good fight continues. Thank you again for your continued prayers. Please keep the volume up for this good man and his Family. Your prayers are greatly apprecjated and they have borne some pisitjve results. Thank you. God Bless.

Office of the President

To the Manhattan College Community,

I am writing to provide an update on the health of our President Emeritus,  Brother Thomas Scanlan, FSC.  As you know, Brother Thomas underwent open heart surgery two weeks ago.  When I wrote to the community on January 11, the plan was for him to return directly to the Manhattan College Christian Brothers Community.  Unfortunately, some complications slowed his progress and kept him in the hospital until late last week.  I am happy to report that he has been discharged and is back on track toward full recovery at De La Salle Hall in Lincroft:  810 Newman Springs Road / Lincroft, NJ 07738.

I know that Brother Thomas appreciates the community’s prayers and good wishes.

Sincerely,
Brennan O'Donnell

Last evening I sent out a prayer request for Lauren Johnson, Mike and Cathie McEneney’s Granddaughter, Lauren Johnson. Mike has just let us know that Lauren’s surgery scheduled for next week, has been postponed. There are some further tests that need to be done. Please keep Lauren in your prayers as we pray that all goes well as Lauren is prepared for her surgery. I will let you know when Lauren’s surgery is rescheduled. Thank you. God Bless.

Pays De Trou De Merde

*** begin quote ***

It ain’t only places like that, you know. Not too long ago I lived in a small town in Ohio on the edge of Appalachia.  There were places in that town a lot like the places I saw back East; this, time filled with white people; toothless, badly dressed, poorly fed, poorly educated, chronically ill, dirt poor, men, women and children.  How about half naked kids playing outside in the winter?  Now, there’s a trou de merde you can drive through on your way to watch Ohio State play Michigan State.

Trump, if he said it, only called a spade a spade; and, my point is, he only used a term quite familiar to everyone above the age of ten in this country.  The folks who are upset by it all are the nosegay and smelling salts phonies; the “whitened sepulchers”, the liars who are as familiar with those things as a seagull with gurry; which means most of the people yowling about how horrible this all is.

Gurry, for you folks unfamiliar with the word, is simply rotting fish offal.  It looks and smells much better than it really is when in a black dress, topped with a pink hat and preceded by a hashtag.

Unfortunately, DJT45 just said what everyone was thinking.

Call it what you want but it’s not “racist”; just “realistic”.

We want “good people”; not “criminals”.

We have to end the “welfare / warfare” state to get back to the “American Dream”.

That’s too my fellow alum for an eloquent observation.
