POSITRACTION: $28 baby saver

2017-Nov-26

http://time.com/5023212/best-inventions-of-2017/

Bempu

Fat is an extremely useful quality in babies. Without it, they can rapidly lose body heat, become hypothermic and develop breathing and other problems. But in areas with few resources, where the numbers of premature or low-weight births are highest, most hospitals and clinics can’t afford incubators to keep babies warm, and most parents don’t know their babies are in danger until it’s too late. Enter the Bempu, a $28 light-up temperature-monitoring bracelet that fits on a baby’s wrist; it sounds an alarm and flashes orange if babies are too cold, so mothers can warm them against their skin or swaddle them. So far, the device has helped an estimated 10,000 newborns, mostly in India but also in 25 other countries. And earlier this year, it won a $2 million grant from Saving Lives at Birth to scale its distribution even wider. “Our goal,” says Bempu CEO Ratul Narain, “is to make a solid dent in the neonatal mortality numbers.” —Belinda Luscombe

It’s great that “we” can save more babies.

It’s a conundrum that “we” abort so many babies.

It’s like “we” are psychotics.

Obituary

GARDINER-John E. Ruoff died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 at 83 years of age. His passing was attended by loved ones, and took place at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

Summers with his family were spent visiting his Uncle Emil in New Paltz, and working as a busboy in the Wildmere and Cliffhouse hotels on Lake Minnewaska. John married Margarete Hildebrandt on Dec. 16, 1967 at St. Joseph’s Church in New Paltz. John and Margarete, together with John’s parents, owned and operated the Mountain Brauhaus Restaurant in Gardiner for over 40 years. They raised four children together, and eventually entrusted the restaurant to their two youngest, who now run it with their spouses. John and Margarete remained an integral part of the business, helping daily in many ways, big and small.

John provided a steady moral compass, a good sense of humor and a patient ear for his family’s concerns. He was a man who loved his family and his faith. He had a great appreciation for the natural world, attentive to the myriad details of the world around him. John enjoyed taking walks with his wife, spending time with his grandchildren and splitting his own firewood, a skill he taught his grandson, Oliver, this past summer.

In addition to his wife, Margarete, John is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Karin and Dennis Skalla of Saugerties, N.Y. and Ilka and Kevin Casey of Gardiner, N.Y.; son, Eugene Ruoff of Gardiner, N.Y., and son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Veronica Ruoff of Gardiner, N.Y. Obituary for Anthony Senerchia, Jr.
March 11, 1971 - November 25, 2017
Pelham, New York | Age 46

After a courageous, fourteen yearlong battle with ALS, Anthony Senerchia Jr. passed away on Saturday, November 25th. He was 46 years old. The third of four boys born in Mount Vernon, NY to Anthony and Rose Senerchia, Anthony was the inspiration behind the "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge". Anthony was raised in Pelham, NY where he attended Prospect Hill School before graduating from Pelham Memorial High in 1989. Anthony was an athlete who excelled in football as Captain of his high school football team. It was while attending high school that Anthony discovered his biggest love… a love that would become his pillar and support in the game of life…Jeanette Hane, whom he would later marry.

After graduating from high school, Anthony attended Delhi University for two years followed by four years at Manhattan College where he graduated as a Civil Engineer. His engineering degree and strong work ethic served him well. He started his career as a Project Manager with Tri-Star Construction in NYC and later started his own general contracting business named SCC Construction.

In 2003, Anthony married his wife of 14 years Jeanette Hane. It was shortly thereafter that Anthony would be diagnosed with ALS. Anthony's positive attitude and fighting spirit helped him beat doctors' expectations by living more than ten years beyond their prognosis. If you asked Anthony, he would attribute this to his love and desire to be with his daughter Taya. Throughout his fight, Anthony maintained a positive attitude and would say "It's not what we take from life, but what we give back to others is what ultimately defines us." Anthony continued a life of giving. He went on to create the Anthony Senerchia Jr. ALS Charitable Foundation which made substantial monetary donations to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center for ALS research, and to families stricken with ALS suffering financial hardship.

He worked tirelessly to raise awareness for ALS and was directly responsible for the world-renowned Ice bucket challenge which raised over two hundred million dollars for ALS research. At the height of the ALS Ice bucket challenge in 2014, Anthony and his family were invited to ring the opening bell at the NASDAQ stock exchange. In 2016, the original Ice Bucket used by Anthony's wife Jeanette was inducted into the Washington D.C. Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American History.

Anthony's charitable contributions and honors are endless. He became an honorary firefighter in the village of Pelham and in 2015, was awarded "Man of the Year" by the Pelham Civics Association. Later that same year, Anthony received the prestigious Castle Connelly National Health Leadership award for all his charitable contributions. Anthony was also honored by the town of Pelham for his contributions to his community and for his role in creating the Pelham youth football league. Anthony donated many hours and years of his life coaching Pelham youth football. As a result of his commitment and contributions to the town, each year one outstanding high school athlete demonstrating character, strength and leadership is selected as the "The Anthony Senerchia Award" recipient.

Although Anthony received many awards and accolades in his lifetime none would compare with his daughter Taya who was his ultimate pride and joy. Anthony was a devoted father who loved to take Taya for breakfast, help with her math homework and go for walks with her.

Anthony will be remembered as a fireball who tried everything in life. He was family oriented, generous and always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a great husband, a proud father, a loving son and a great brother. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Anthony leaves behind his wife Jeanette Hane Senerchia, his daughter Taya, his parents; Anthony and Rose Senerchia, his brothers; Nick, (Rita) John, (Tracee), Joseph (Kirsten), his fourteen beloved nieces and nephews and his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A celebration of Anthony's life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham NY on Tuesday, November 28th, from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church 575 Fowler Ave in Pelham Manor on Wednesday November 29th at 10:00 am. Entombment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to www.plumfund.com/memorial-fund/tayas-fund. The Senerchia Family would like to thank everyone who has supported and helped them over the past few years. They would like to send a special word of thanks to the Pelham Fire and Police Departments for all their help. For more information or to leave a condolence please visit pelhamfuneral.com

Tom McCarthy Sr. was diagnosed with Stage 3a lung cancer after a pretty sizable tumor had been discovered back in early October during a routine exam, eventually labeled as a non-small cell squamous carcinoma. After weeks of testing and evaluation, he is due to begin treatment tomorrow. He's taking part in a clinical trial at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center which will include a mixture of chemotherapy and immunotherapy over the next 12 weeks and with the ultimate goal of operating to remove the mass.

It's been a tough few months and we have a long road ahead but he's in great hands and it's amazing how far treatment has come... there's a lot of love and support for Big Tom! So we're keeping a positive outlook for a successful course of treatment and we appreciate the prayers and well-wishes for him and all his doctors and caregivers.

Dear Friends,

Happy New (Liturgical) Year!

Once again, the Church begins our new liturgical year with the first Sunday of Advent. No countdown, streamers, or champagne - but a simple candle on a wreath. The candle reminds us that, like the servants in Sunday’s Gospel, we are called during Advent to prepare ourselves for the coming of our Lord.

Therefore, echoing the words of Pope Francis, YOU ARE INVITED to join us by using our weekly Advent meditation guides. The first of these is below, to help you step away from the hectic world for a few minutes and focus on the love and peace that Jesus wants to share with you.

I hope that you find the following meditations helpful in your Advent journey toward the wonderful miracle that is Christmas. May God bless you with His grace during this holy season.

If you would like a more intensive prayer experience, you can click on the link at the bottom of the page to view a full personal retreat on our website. Please remember the Brothers in your prayers, and know that you are in their prayers also.

Live Jesus in our hearts.

First Week of Advent: You Are Invited!
Founder’s Voice: “How long has Jesus been knocking at the door of your heart waiting to enter?”
(De La Salle's Meditation - 85.1 Feast of the Nativity)

A Reading from the Gospel of Mark 13:33-37
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Be watchful! Be alert!
You do not know when the time will come.
It is like a man traveling abroad.
He leaves home and places his servants in charge,
each with his own work,
and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch.
Watch, therefore;
you do not know when the Lord of the house is coming,
whether in the evening, or at midnight,
or at cockcrow, or in the morning.
May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping.
What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!'”

ENDNOTE: Why we need to empower "our" female human resources

2017-Dec-02

https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/11/how-an-unpaid-uk-researcher-saved-the-japanese-seaweed-industry/

FINDING NORI —How an unpaid UK researcher saved the Japanese seaweed industry
After crops failed, botanist Kathleen Drew-Baker realized that nori wasn't what it seemed.
ESTHER INGLIS-ARKELL - 11/19/2017, 8:41 AM

*** begin quote ***

Fortunately, on an island at the other end of Eurasia, Kathleen Drew-Baker had recently gotten fired. She had been a lecturer in botany at the University of Manchester where she studied algae that reproduced using spores rather than flowers. But the university did not employ married women. So when she got married to fellow academic Henry Wright-Baker she was kicked off the faculty and relegated to a job as an unpaid research fellow.

Drew-Baker focused on a type of nori unfamiliar to nearly everyone: Porphyra umbilicalis. It's a leafy seaweed that grows off the coast of Wales. Locals harvest it, grind it up, and use it to make bread or soup. Known colloquially as laver, it's still eaten in Britain but has not attained the international standing of nori.

*** and ***

Thanks to her many discoveries, Drew-Baker's career thrived, too. Despite being fired for getting married, she became the first elected president of the British Phycological Society in 1952. Today, Drew-Baker is known in Japan as "the mother of the sea," and every year a festival is held in her honor in Uto City.

*** end quote ***

First, what a bunch of dummies — men — who make a rule against “employing married women”.

Second, what a great demonstration of the “lemons and lemonade” mandate to action.

Third, what a fantastic illustration of the value of “female human resources”.

I certainly hope that folks will take these lessons to heart. And, we should </sarcasm> “thank” <sarcasm/> those countries and societies that keep “their” women “barefoot, uneducated, and pregnant”. Nothing like trying to compete on the world stage with literally half your human resources tied behind your collective backs.

Argh!

"Never underestimate the power of human stupidity." --- Robert A. Heinlein
