As a means of soothing his troubled mind, however, Lt. Col. Andy LaFrazia stopped by the veteran’s bedside with an important gift.
LaFrazia first heard about the 84-year-old’s troubled predicament when Silk’s daughter Julie Dunn and her husband Kenny posted about her father’s condition on social media.

WHAT SHE DID: Rosso previously placed steel bars in concrete to make structures stronger. More recently, she’s been “stressing” the bridge’s stay cables, which has her working hundreds of feet in the air.
VIEW FROM ABOVE: “I was always impressed by the guys who would climb up with no reservation whatsoever but after the first month you’re right there with them and it doesn’t faze you anymore. I used to be scared to look over the edge and then by the end you don’t care anymore. It’s pretty amazing how far down you can see. You can see the weather coming when you’re up there. You can tell if it’s going to rain in an hour or so…It feels a lot hotter up there because there’s nowhere to escape. There’s not a lot of shade. And the wind. As heavy as the towers are they sway. Sitting on the tenth floor of the Howe Center, in an office with breathtaking views of Hoboken and New York City, students can find Chris Shemanski, the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Student Life. Shemanski oversees over 110 student organizations on campus, and every year the number just keeps on growing. He is responsible for programs such as Alternative Spring Break and the student leadership program LEADS. Shemanski also works on planning events such as Freshman Orientation with his colleagues to give undergraduate students the best college experience possible.
Although this November will mark his 4th year here at Stevens, but Shemanski has several places he calls home. After receiving his Bachelors in Economics from Manhattan College, and then his Masters in Higher Education in Student Affairs from Texas A&M, he found himself in Ohio. Shemanski has always made it a point to push himself out of his comfort zone, and suggests that students do the same when they arrive on campus this fall. “You never know what’s going to happen…try things that are new, meet new people, be vulnerable through it because it’s not always going to be the most comfortable and that’s okay; that’s when we grow and that’s when we develop into the people we want to become.”
Shemanski explains that a huge reason why he has been at Stevens for the last 4 years is Stevens students. “You all come with such great ideas and really push the limits…you bring ideas of what’s happening outside of Castle Point and this small tight knit community and bring it here on a small scale and that’s exciting. I love the Stevens students that really are creative and, not to be cheesy, innovative…that constant change excites me and makes no day the same” He explains that he has a rough schedule planned, but his days are truly driven by students due to his open door policy. Shemanski was also originally drawn to Stevens due to its strong sense of community. He gushes, “I love the opportunity to build relationships with students, but also to see them grow and develop from when they start here, like at the Stute Freshman Weekend, and then getting to work with them over the next four to five years and then seeing them graduate. It’s amazing to see the growth and development that has happened. At larger institutions that have 50 to 60 thousand students, relationships are much different. You usually get to see them once and then you may never see them again. Here, I walk outside of my office on the campus and it’s really nice to see familiar faces.”
As for getting acclimated to Stevens, Shemanski reminds students “You have all of this [gesturing to Hoboken] and that [New York City] across the way; there are so many social and cultural activities, so take advantage and do that while you can. There are so many opportunities.” The Entertainment Committee provides students opportunities to see Broadway shows, concerts, professional sports games often at reduced rates. Shemanski insists, “all you have to do is show up!”
To students about to embark on this academic journey, Shemanski offers this advice: “Yes college is stressful. Yes, you have a lot going on. Take the time to walk out to Pier A. Just stop along any of the piers and just sit on the grass… just take a breath and soak it in. I think for me, [that] centers me and makes me put everything into perspective. It will all work out. Just take care of yourself along the way.”

ALBANY Brother Richard Leo McAlice F.S.C., 85, died peacefully at De La Salle Hall in Lincroft, N.J., following a brief time in hospice care.
Born in Pawtucket, R.I., to Leo Francis McAlice and Edith Nichols. Richard attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket. After graduating, he decided to answer the call to religious life and entered the order of the De La Salle Christian Brothers at Barrytown, N.Y. in June of 1950, taking the name Brother Richard Leo. He then attended De La Salle College, Washington, D.C. from 1951-1954 and Manhattan College, N.Y. from 1954-1956, graduating with a BS in Social Science.
His call to serve the marginalized and poor is best epitomized by his work at Incarnation School in Manhattan, followed by 25 years teaching and working at Lincoln Hall from 1956 to 1981. He then brought his gifts and talents to La Salle School in Albany where he continued to inspire many for the next 37 years.
He has worked most well and tirelessly on behalf of the "Children confided to our care" according to the Rule of the Brothers throughout his life. His warm smile and strong commitment encouraged many staff and students.
His family, Nascar (especially Tony Stewart) and the Yankees were special to him. He is predeceased by his brothers, Henry and Charles; and his sisters, Frances and Ruth. He leaves his brothers, Leo and twin brother, Arthur; and his sister Edith all the joy possible of having lived life to the fullest.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Brother Richard Leo's family and confrere's Tuesday, August 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. in McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany,. Funeral services Wednesday, August 23, at 8:45 a.m. from McVeigh Funeral Home, thence to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany at 9:30 a.m. where his funeral Mass will be con-celebrated. The Rite of Committal will be held in the De La Salle Christian Brothers lot in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, immediately following the funeral Mass.

Beacon - Gerald Francis McElduff, a lifelong Beacon resident, passed away peacefully at his daughter and son-in-law's home in Beekman on Monday, August 14th.
He was born in Beacon on July 2, 1929. He was the son of Mary Bree and Michael Hugh McElduff. On June 21, 1958 he married the love of his life, Anita Kelly, whom he cherished for his entire married life and with whom he is happily reunited.
He is survived by his children, son Gerald and wife Mary (Havens) McElduff, daughter Maureen and husband Kevin Mullaney and son, Edward McElduff. He was Poppy to his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Sean McElduff and wife Allyson and their son Kellan, Eileen and Patrick McElduff, Kathleen and Madeline Mullaney, Michael McElduff and wife Michelle and their daughter Nora, Danielle Raheem and husband Abdool, Aidan and Lauren McElduff.
Jerry loved his family, loved being Irish and especially, loved Beacon. He graduated from Beacon High School and studied engineering at Syracuse University and Manhattan College. He worked at Central Hudson as a lineman and then proudly served in the U.S. Army in Korea on the wire team running communication lines between the front line and headquarters. When he returned from service, he worked building houses in Beacon. In 1960, Jerry began his career in Engineering at IBM Poughkeepsie where he remained until his retirement in 1991. He was a proud member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. He was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Beacon Elks Club. He was also a member of Southern Dutchess Country Club, where he first asked out his wife, Anita. They enjoyed their time at the Club with their children, relatives and friends their entire lives and had a special fondness for those that worked there in recent years.
He is also survived by sisters, Anne Schultz and Kate Huber, brother John McElduff and wife Suzanne, and sister-in-law Virginia and husband Richard Wagner and many nephews, nieces and extended family members. He was predeceased by his wife Anita, brothers Mike, Pat and Danny, sister Mary Browne, sisters-in-law Peggy, Ursula, Ann McElduff, Kate Dettloff, Margaret Ruf, and brothers-in-law Paul Dettloff, Gene Huber, Jim Browne and Bill Schultz.
He touched the lives of all he met with his kindness, calmness and caring spirit. He loved doing crossword puzzles, he loved the beach, especially Long Beach Island, NJ where he shared many great memories with his family. He was a fan of the NY Giants, NY Yankees and any team his children and grandchildren played on. He was one of a kind and he will be sorely missed by all who loved him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, 325 Washington Avenue, Beacon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beacon Volunteer Ambulance or St. Joachim - St. John the Evangelist Church.
The family would like to give special thanks to his Hospice Nurse, Cassandra, his home health aide, Sarah Sheehy and his Hospice aide Susan, and the staff at Mid Hudson Regional Hospital for all the care they have shown him over this year.

George Francis Knapp, Jr. passed away peacefully in his home at Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains on August 19, 2017 after a long illness.
Born in Belle Harbor, New York on September 6th, 1931 to George and Annette Knapp, George was educated at St. Frances de Sales grammar school, St Augustine High School, and on to earn a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College in 1953. Shortly after, he was drafted into the US Army Signal Corps at the end of the Korean War, and honorably discharged in 1956. He later received an MBA from New York University in 1964 and attended Harvard University's Advanced Management Program in 1974. After 15 years as a member of the Board of Trustees of Manhattan College, George was awarded an honorary PhD in American Letters in 2004.
George's professional life began as an engineer in 1956 at NY Telco where he rose to various Executive positions until 1966 when he moved to ITT Corp in Santiago, Chile. In 1968 he was appointed President of Puerto Rico Telco where he ultimately sold the company to the government of Puerto Rico in 1974. Returning to New York, he was appointed VP and Group Executive of ITT's 22 telecom companies until 1982 when he moved to Brussels, Belgium as Director of ITT Europe. He returned to New York with ITT until his retirement in 1988, which was followed by years of consulting for various venture capital and investment groups in New Jersey.
On a personal note, George married his high school sweetheart, Ann Eileen Stanley, also of Belle Harbor, in January 1954. Together they had five children and 63 years of happy marriage. Sadly, Eileen passed away in April 2017.
George is survived by daughters Eileen Sanchez, married to Eduardo of Atlanta, GA, Kathleen Hayes, married to John of Allendale, Margaret Knapp-Palin and Bernard Boyle of Allendale, and son Richard Knapp, married to Kimberly of Tulsa, OK. He was pre-deceased by his son George F. Knapp III in 1983. George had 11 grandchildren who adored him: Christina Rush, Vanessa Lambrix, Daniel Sanchez, Ryan, Sean and Colin Hayes, Jesse Graglia, George and Quincy Knapp, Erin and Dylan Palin, and 7 great-grandchildren: Claire, Havana, Landon, Walker, Quincy, Royce and Delphina.
On Thursday, August 24th at 10:30am a funeral mass will be held at Most Blessed Sacrament RC Church, Franklin Lakes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those wishing to make memorial donations consider Manhattan College.

James Martin Schlomann, 68 of Waretown passed away on Sunday, August 20th at Hackensack Hospital.
James was born in New York, New York and lived in Monroe, New York and settled in Holmdel. He graduated Manhattan College and Bernard Baruch College. James was a CPA, Chief financial officer and Executive Vice president of Confie Seguros Inc and Chief Financial officer and other senior financial positions at companies such as Frank B. Hall, US life, Prudential, Marsh McLennan and USI.
James loved to golf, was always the life of the party, drinking Miller lite and spending lots of time with his family and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
James is predeceased by his parents Fredrick and Adelaide Schlomann and Brothers Robert and Thomas Schlomann.
Surviving are, his Wife Carole Schlomann; his children, Stacy Kale, Tristan Schlomann and Danna James; and his grandchildren, Summer, Scarlett, Tristan Jr, Emerson, Quinn and Harlow.
Visitation Thursday, August 24 2pm to 4pm, and 7pm to 9pm at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel.
Funeral Service will be Friday, August 25th at 10 am at the Funeral home, interment to immediately follow at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown.

The Heart of Texas Historians and Storytellers will be hosting their 5th annual event on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the Heart of Texas Event Center. This year the group has invited William Groneman III who was a captain and company commander of Engine Company 308 which worked at Ground Zero just hours after the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
William Groneman III was born and raised in New York City, and currently lives in Kerrville, Texas. He is a graduate of Manhattan College with a degree in History. He is also a former member of NYC Fire Department, having served in the ranks of Firefighter, Fire Marshal, Lieutenant, and Captain. He retired in February 2002 after twenty-five years to pursue his writing career.
Groneman was off duty as Captain of Engine Company 308 on the morning of September 11, 2001. He returned to duty, going to the scene of the World Trade Center attack with a team of his firefighters. They remained there for the next twelve hours contributing to the rescue efforts. He and the men from Engine 308 returned to the scene a number of times in the following weeks. His book, September 11: A Memoir, (2011) tells the story of his experiences.
Although Groneman’s presentation will focus on the events of September 11, 2001, he is also a long-time student of the battle of the Alamo. He has written a number of books and articles exploring the history of the Alamo and the questions surrounding the death of David Crockett. Other books he has written are: Alamo Defenders – A Genealogy: The People and Their Words, 1990; Defense of a Legend: Crockett and the De la Pena Diary, 1994; Battlefields of Texas, 1998; Death of a Legend: The Myth and Mystery Surrounding the Death of Davy Crockett, 1999; David Crockett – Hero of the Common Man, 2005; Eyewitness to the Alamo, 2017. In addition, Groneman has contributed numerous articles to the Forge Books anthologies; an original song to the Western Writers of American’s music anthology; and has published articles in Roundup Magazine, the Steinbeck Review, True West, and Wild West Magazines. He is a member of the Western Writers of America, The Western Music Association, the John Steinbeck Society, and the Texas Folklore Society.
In addition to Groneman’s presentation, special guests Brandon and Kelly Bohannon will be sharing their insights and experiences of September 11 while residing in NYC. The Bohannons recently accepted a position with a new church near Ft. Worth after having served the congregation of Vision Heights Church in Brady for seven years. Kelly taught Math at Brady High School, and aside from church commitments, they and their two sons were heavily involved in community activities during their time here.
During the event, Brady’s EMS and Fire Department of Brady, and volunteer fire departments of Lohn, Melvin, Placid, Rochelle, and Voca will be recognized for their daily heroism and willingness to come to the aid of all citizens and who proudly serve our community by providing 24-hour fire protection and advanced medical life support service. Newly appointed Brady Fire Chief, Brian Meroney will also be sharing his insights of 9/11. Meroney was last employed at the Saginaw Fire Department and has more than 23 years of firefighting experience. He is has obtained numerous certifications including both fire and EMS instructor certification. The HOT Historians and Storytellers group is proud to recognize the life-saving contributions and achievements as well as the dedication and commitment of those who serve in the various fire departments and EMS.
This very special presentation by William Groneman III will be Sunday, September 10, beginning at 2:00 PM at the Heart of Texas Event Center, 805 San Angelo Hwy. 87. There is no admission charge, although donations will be gratefully accepted at the door. The Heart of Texas Historians and Storytellers is a collaborative group made up of representatives from the Heart of Texas Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Sons of the Republic of Texas, Heart of Texas Historical Museum, and the Heart of Texas Writers Group.

Frederic George Schwarz passed on Thursday, June 29, 2017. Fred died at the age of 91 years in Austin, Texas. He was a devoted husband, father, friend, and respected corporate businessman. Fred will be dearly missed.
Fred was the loving husband of Ingeborg Wieland Schwarz, to whom he had been married to for nearly 64 years. In addition to his wife, Inge, he is survived by his daughters, Tracey I. Krogstad of West Richland, WA, and Leslie Schwarz Allison of Austin, TX, as well as his three grandchildren: Konrad J. Krogstad, John "Jack" Frederic Allison and Christine Allison.
Fred was born and raised on the Upper Eastside of New York City, the son of Gottlob and Luise Schwarz, he lived in New York City, NY, North Bellmore, NY, Scarsdale, NY, Rye, NY, Chapel Hill, NC, and West Lake Hills, TX. He also spent many memorable summers at his vacation home in the Lake Paupac Club in Greentown, PA with his family and friends. Fred and his wife were also long time residents and members of the Governors Club in Chapel Hill, NC.
A month after graduating with a pre-engineering diploma from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1944, Fred was drafted into the Armed Forces, earning his Expert Marksman badge in training. He served honorably in WWII with the United States Army from 1944-1946 as an Operations NCO (814, Technical Sergeant) with the 146th Field Artillery Battalion. With the 146th, he served in the Army's efforts to retake the Philippines in the Mindanao and Sulu Archipelago campaigns. Later, Fred served in the US occupation forces in Japan.
After returning from overseas, Fred earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Manhattan College in 1951, where he was the captain of both the freshman and varsity basketball teams and a member of the Pen and Sword Society. Fred earned a Master of Business Administration at New York University in 1955. He also graduated from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking Foundation at Southern Methodist University.
Fred had an extensive career in finance, starting in 1951 at Chase Manhattan Bank NA, New York City, as an Assistant Treasurer and rising to Vice President. He left Chase in 1971 and moved to Englehard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation, and Philipp Brothers (which evolved into Phibro Corporation, and Phibro-Salomon Inc., and Salomon Inc.), in New York City, where he served as Treasurer and Vice President until 1987. He was Chief Finance Officer at Ecoban Associates, Ltd., New York City, from 1988-1989 and Treasurer of Seminole Fertilizer Corporation, Stamford, Connecticut, 1989-1991. Fred retired in 1991 and moved to Chapel Hill, NC.
Fred loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed playing basketball and golf, fishing, going to the theatre, traveling abroad, and watching collegiate and professional sports.
A memorial service for Fred will be held on August 25, 2017 at 11AM at Saint Martin's Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas.

Well, they're doubling down on Afghanistan yet again.
It's unbelievable.
The war is pointless and unwinnable, and in any case the people waging it never actually deign to explain to us what their war aims actually are.
With Vietnam, there were certain factors at work that would eventually bring U.S. involvement to an end: substantial American casualties, constant media coverage, massive opposition to the draft (which is what drove the antiwar movement), and so on.
With those factors absent in Afghanistan, where is the momentum going to come from to bring it to an end?
It's a question I can't answer, unfortunately. Not to say there isn't an answer, but I don't know what it is.
The good news is, our friend Scott Horton, a one-man libertarian foreign-policy think tank, just released his new book, Fool's Errand: Time to End the War in Afghanistan.

My fondest wish for a DJT45 Presidency was that he would be the “peace candidate” that Ron Paul would have been.
A pragmatic businessman should realize the concept of “sunken cost”. We’re talking a lost “cause”. The USSR broke up on it. As did the British Empire. When will we learn that the Swiss have the correct “foreign policy”.
So sad. More young girls and boys put at risk for a failed strategy and tactics to match.
