POSITRACTION: The "what3words" utility

Identifying disaster zones with what3words and the Philippine Red Cross

*** begin quote ***

The Philippine Red Cross provides essential support and aid in disasters, such as heavy flooding and typhoons, throughout the Philippines region.

The Operations Center provides a 24/7 control and coordination service to teams operating in the heart of disaster zones. They are in charge of dispatch, mobilisation and tracking of individuals and vehicles in these areas.

In terms of identifying a precise location, the Philippines already suffer from inadequate street and building addressing. This is magnified in rural areas, where people typically resort to describing a location based on nearby landmarks.

*** end quote ***

What a GREAT idea.

While it seems “obvious” in the USA, it’s really not. From my time on the local rescue squad, responding to an address was relatively easy but not so if it was not at an “address”. This service provides a “global address”.

While they need Google or Amazon to join this service and make it “universal”, it does pinpoint locations quite nicely. I use it by sharing the map’s link when I’m trying to pinpoint a location.

Here’s a tool you can use and I hope it’s never needed for your rescue.

COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) agrees on "federal flood insurance

2017-Jul-02

For once - (mostly) a point a agreement!

Even though I vacation, happily, on the Outer Banks of NC, I couldn't agree with you more about the futility of underpriced flood insurance. And government involvement only makes this worse, because rates and conditions are more subject to political than strictly actuarial forces. Instead of caving to the entreaties of the frequently wealthy owners, the spineless pols should be saying, "You should not have built (or bought) there in the first place."

I think that there should be stricter building and development regulations which would not allow a lot of this building to happen at all. I suspect our opinions would diverge on this score...

Also, since Social Security payments are solely funded from employee and employer contributions, I'm not sure how this is a "wealth transfer" program.

Thanks, as always, for your kind efforts as CIC!

JR: Nice to be in (mostly) agreement.

I’m not in favor of Gooferment “diktats” like “building and development regulations”. If you own the land, you should be able to build what you want. The Gooferment shouldn’t be in the “insurance business” or “mistake prevention”. I’m sure that the unavailability of insurance, or say-high cost if it is, will “solve” the problem.

As far as “Social Security” as a “wealth transfer”:

“Social Security payments” are not from “contributions”. Contributions are voluntary; theft is not.

AND, this is not an actuarily based insurance contract. Since poor minority men have a much lower life expectancy than rich white women, they get the short end of the stick. In effect, they are subsidizing rich white women.

In addition, it’s a inter-generational wealth transfer. Past generations got more than they put in, and future generations will get a lot less, if anything.

Finally, the analysis of “Social Security” seems to indicate that the ROI is a negative 7%; if you figure in the time value of money, it’s close to 100%. (Not hard when inflation over 30 years is 95%.) All in all it’s worse than a Ponzi scheme. One has to voluntarily participate in a Ponzi scheme; with Social Security, there’s no choice.
I have to credit Tom Woods and Bob Murphy for my understanding of “Social Security”

Yankees’ shortest player won’t let size keep him from dream
By Zach Braziller

*** begin quote ***

Don’t tell Jose Carrera size matters. If he subscribed to that notion, the former Manhattan College shortstop wouldn’t be a professional baseball player today.

Told he was too short throughout his career, passed over for bigger athletes and ridiculed for his lack of height, the 5-foot-2 infielder never let his shortcomings hinder him.

“This game is not about size,” he said in a phone interview. “The biggest thing you can have in this game is your heart, and the mental side of it. If you’re tough and you believe in yourself, you can succeed. That’s what I think.”

*** and ***

Carrera’s height is only part of his story of perseverance. He has suffered three serious injuries. He fractured his right ankle his freshman year of high school, which cost him the entire season. But while he was out, he taught himself to hit left-handed and now is a switch hitter. As a sophomore in college, he broke his right hamate bone. This past season, he broke his left hamate bone. Carrera was given the option to redshirt, but he didn’t want to leave his teammates hanging. He sped back, returning from the injury to help the Jaspers reach the MAAC Tournament.

JEMAIL: Tossetti, Jesse [MC2016] forming an alumni veterans group

2017-Jul-04

RE: Happy Independence Day from a Jasper Veteran

Dear Manhattan College Alumni,

Happy Independence Day! My name is Jesse Tossetti and I am a U.S. Navy veteran and recent Manhattan College alumnus. In addition, I am completing my master’s degree at Manhattan and will graduate in December 2017.

My military service began in 1994, when I became a Hospital Corpsman, providing medical care to Sailors and Marines. I was promoted in 2008 to the rank of Chief Petty and served as the Senior Enlisted Leader for 7th Marine Regiment and the Branch Health Clinic Lakehurst and Colts Neck, NJ. The valuable experiences I have had working with and serving fellow service members led me to pursue a career in which I can continue to help others.

I was also inspired during my time at Manhattan College to strive towards the creation of a supportive community for veteran students, an interest that resulted in my serving as President of the Student Veterans Organization, formerly known as VALOR Club, in 2015. Now I wish to continue this work by bridging the gap between alumni and student veterans.

As I transition from student to alumnus, I would like to help Manhattan College organize an alumni veterans group. I feel this initiative would truly benefit current student veterans by providing them with a way to connect to those who came before them. It would also provide alumni an opportunity to network with one another across class years, careers, and service agencies, with the goal of supporting one another after graduation.

I have been in touch with the Office of Aumni Relations to help organize this veteran alumni group. If you are a veteran or in some way connected to the armed forces, I hope you will take a minute or to two to click here to complete this survey.

Thank you for your time and I wish you a happy Independence Day!

Very respectfully,

Jesse Tossetti ’16

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) share July 4th wishes

2017-Jul-04

Good Afternoon All,

Well, here we are once again, preparing to welcome and celebrate the 4th of July. One of the most memorable accomplishments of Freedom in our time and time immemorial. We are so fortunate to be able to do this with Family, friends, loved ones, those we remember with love and gratitude. We are truly Blessed. I hope you will not mind that I want to share with you a poignant message, if you will, that was shared by Pete Sweeney. The 4th is one of those days that brings a tear to my eyes, a major tug at my heart and a so overwhelming sense of Pride as I watch the Parades go by and remember the sacrifices, as well, that guard and protect our Freedoms, " One Nation Under God....". The picture below is simple, it holds the basis of our beliefs as a Nation, the strength of our convictions and beliefs, the freedoms our Country offers to those willing and wanting to embrace this country. The symbols you see are clear, the " Declaration of Independence "', the Seal and Basis of Our Country, " We The People " and a " Child in Prayer," the " Future of our Country. " The picture was given out, as it happens, from a Catholic Church, St Mary's, established in 1942, in Manahawkin, New Jersey. I know this church, a stronghold of Faith, Morals and Love of Country. Pete tells us that this picture particularly resonated with the young people in the Community. Amen to that. Please join me in wishing you' each other and our neighbors, a Happy 4th of July. Yankee Doodle Dandy, indeed. God Bless.

AU track coach and Olympian Matthew Centrowitz Sr. publishes memoir
Centrowitz shares stories of his running career and his son’s gold medal mile in new book
By Shannon Scovel | 16 hours ago | Updated 14 hours ago

*** begin quote ***

Google Matthew Centrowitz and the first page will be filled with results related to the younger Matthew Centrowitz, Olympic gold medalist, recent track star and the son of AU head track and cross country coach, Matthew Centrowitz Sr.

Search the name on Amazon, however, and the name brings up different results. The site instead displays a picture of a memoir, published on January 19, 2017 by Centrowitz Sr., who announced his plan in May to step down as coach in September.

An Olympian himself, Centrowitz Sr. said his recent project allowed him to share stories from a sport that molded him and his son into the iconic track figures that they are today. The book takes readers from Centrowitz Sr.’s childhood in the Bronx, a run in with the law and his first day on the track.

Centrowitz Sr. writes in chronological order as he describes his growth in the sport, and his decision to transfer to the University of Oregon from Manhattan College after his first year of collegiate running. The book hits on three main themes, running, coaching and parenting, but the majority of the book focuses on Centrowitz Sr.’s athletic career, offering bits and pieces of his parenting style at the beginning and end of the book and some of his own coaching anecdotes in the final chapters.

Strangers surprise man who walks 3 miles to work with new carMoreWhen Andy Mitchell spotted a young man in a fast food uniform walking along the side of a road on a 95-degree summer day in Rockwall, Texas, he felt compelled to pull over. He rolled down his window and offered the man, a 20-year-old named Justin Korva, a ride -- not knowing how much that small gesture would impact the man's life. While driving the Korva to work at Taco Casa, Mitchell discovered the young man normally walked 3 miles to work and home again every day. Korva said he was determined to save up money and someday, he hoped, he would be able to afford a car. After dropping off Korva, Mitchell posted about the man's determination on Facebook. “To all the people that say they want to work … … …”

Anyone, who says the flyover USA is racist, miserly, and “mean”, should follow this story.

Despite all the taxes, fees, inflation, and Gooferment theft, real every day folks are generous. At home or abroad, “we” don’t sit on our wallets.

And, “we” could be even MORE charitable if the Gooferment didn’t steal our wealth in their version of “charity” — with the cost of all those politicians and bureaucrats to “administer” it. I like to point to the Salvation Army as the classic example of a charity. The top kick makes under 100k. Compare that to the United Way, the Red Cross, or any Big Charity!

In this example, the community and businesses all chipped in. No big salary. No administrators. No marketing. Just action. A C T I O N.

People to person.

Love it.
