POSITRACTION: The simple faith of a child who'd been through tough times

2017-Apr-30

Tiffany Hill-Moore 12 hrs ·

Today I met Larry at my mothers house. Larry is a 9 year old boy that lives down the street. He happened to be walking down the street and saw the kids playing outside. He asked my dad if he could come on the porch and play too. Larry told them his story of how he had been in foster care most of his life since the age of 5 and how his parents had lost him. He was recently reunited with them and now lives down the street. He talked about how he had been beaten and abused in other homes, teased and picked on by other foster kids and how he was happy he wasn't in that situation anymore. I sat there thinking my, my, my what trauma this child has had all before his 10th birthday coming up on May 7th. This child highly intelligent , very respectful, just wanted to play and share his story. He played, laughed, cracked jokes and told more of his story and pain. And then he ate a piece of watermelon and asked if we would be back next Sunday. I told him yes around 1pm after church. He asked if he could come back and meet us on the porch again. I said yes, he told me he'd be back next Sunday around 1p bc he goes to church at 9am and he'd be done by then. I asked who he goes with and what church it was. He told me he goes alone and it's 2 blocks over from his house. He didn't know the name, just knew to be there every Sunday at 9am. Always count your blessings. God shows up in all forms. Today Larry proved that. emoji unicode: 2764emoji unicode: 2764

I don’t know Ms. Tiffany. She seems like a nice lady and an authentic person.

I take this story on face value. I have no way of verifying, authenticating, or trusting it.

That being said, it sounds true and does tug at the conscience.

We know that the “foster care system” that the Gooferment runs is horrendous. And, that it, like most Gooferment bureaucracies, is motivate to perpetuate and expand. The “clients” suffer in the system.

I found this story inspiring. Here’s a child of nine years, that having endured what no child should, comes out of the experience with a unique viewpoint and faith.

So how in the rough and tumble we called life, I didn’t emerge as well-adjusted as he is.

I’ll add him and all the other children in “foster care” to my prayer list. I hope that God, the Universe, or whatever regulates the Fates give him a happier life than he’s had.

JNEWS: Callanan, Jack [MC1966] attends a 50 year reunion

The ‘lucky ones’
Fifty years after Vietnam’s bloodiest battles, veterans gather for what could be a final reunion
Story by Michael E. Ruane Published on April 29, 2017

*** begin quote ***

Kathryn Barents got home from work that fall night in 1967 to find somber family members gathered in the living room, and her shaken father, Henry, waiting to speak with her.
She feared this was about her husband, Paul, a Marine Corps lieutenant in Vietnam. They had been married only a few months, and his class had just completed the Basic Officer Course in Quantico, Va., in August.

*** and ***

At dusk on Jan. 28, 1968, Jack Callanan, call sign “Gold Lemon 1,” was studying a map and reporting over the radio that he and his men had just seized part of the enemy hamlet of Lam Xuan.

He had collected documents from dead enemy soldiers and crammed them into his pockets for intelligence purposes.

Suddenly his radioman yelled, “Grenade!”

Callanan never saw the North Vietnamese soldier who had popped out of a spider hole, and never saw the crude grenade he threw.

But he heard the “kerplunk” when it hit the ground between him and the radioman.

It exploded with a bang, flipped him on his back and drove hot shrapnel into his abdomen, pelvis and left side.

Callanan, 23, was a second lieutenant from the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx in New York City, and one of the five children of parents who had been born in Ireland. He was a math whiz, with an electrical engineering degree from Manhattan College. After leaving the Marines’ Basic School he had gone to the Army’s Fort Sill, Okla., for 12 weeks of artillery training.

The fitness industry has been a part of my life ever since I was 14 years old. Once I opened the door with football and wrestling, I never looked back. I knew that I wanted to follow my passion and receive my degree in Exercise Science. After completing my 4 years at Manhattan College, I then took on my first personal training position at Golds Gym in Monroe NY. It did not take long for me to realize that I was ready to advance in my career. I went to NYC in search of a management role at Crunch fitness. A little over 2 years later and I am currently the fitness manager at Crunch Park Ave.

In Memory of
Vincent D. Bartolomucci
March 16, 1952 - April 25, 2017
Obituary

SAN DIEGO – Vincent “Vince” Bartolomucci recently passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. The cause of his death was kidney failure due to amyloidosis (AL).

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kathy Alix Bartolomucci, their son, Jonathan, his extended family of in-laws, nieces and a nephew. Vince was an only child and was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Anna. With very sad hearts and countless tears, we kissed him good-bye for now, but know we will see him again because of his faith in Jesus.

Vince was a long time employee of San Diego Gas and Electric, retiring in 2016, where he had a diverse career and many friends. While vacationing in San Diego almost forty years ago, Vince fell in love with the city. Before returning to his home in New York City, he applied for employment at SDG&E. A short time later, he was hired. While working at SDG&E, Vince’s career took him down a path where he realized he enjoyed working with people more than numbers. He worked in both the traditional energy and renewable energy fields. After leaving Electrical Engineering, he worked as a Contract Negotiator, Regulatory Affairs representative, Supervisor, and Manager. His favorite position was his last where he managed over 20 people to sustain the day-to-day energy supply for SDG&E. He experienced great satisfaction in mentoring his team in their career development and knowing that SDG&E never had a “major energy supply mistake” during his tenure.

Prior to joining SDG&E, Vince worked as an Electrical Engineer at CON ED in New York City. He commuted from his family home to attend and graduate from Manhattan College, and enjoyed playing the game of monopoly with his friends.

He was a self-taught, accomplished chef with the natural ability to make a spectacular dinner from a few ingredients. Since he was a young man, he enjoyed music, photography, movies, theatre, reading, the symphony, wine, tinkering, dinosaurs and football. Mostly, he loved being with his wife and son.

Vince believed in doing the right thing, acting with integrity and helping the underdog. He also had a heart for the homeless, the wisdom to see the big picture, insight to see beyond the obvious and the ability to understand people. He had a great sense of humor and desire to be the best husband, father and mentor he could be. His family’s well-being was prominent in every decision and action. He was most proud to be the father of Jonathan.

The family extends gratitude to the physicians and staff of Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines and Interim Healthcare The Gift of Hospice in San Diego for their excellent care and sincere concern.

A celebration of Vince’s life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 1:30 at Torrey Pines Church, 8320 La Jolla Scenic Drive North, La Jolla, CA 92037. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the homeless organization of: San Diego Rescue Mission, website: www.sdrescue.org or to the hospice organization: A Gift Keeps Giving, 6350 Birchwood Street, San Diego, CA 92120, or to the Scripps Clinic, Scripps Health Foundation: website: www.giving.scripps.org.

Chairman+Joseph+J.+Savage+to+Retire+on+June+30/12860294.html

Webster Financial (WBS) Chairman Joseph J. Savage to Retire on June 30

Webster Financial Corporation (NYSE: WBS), parent of Webster Bank, announced today that Executive Vice Chairman Joseph J. Savage will retire effective June 30 following a distinguished 40-year career in banking, culminating in 15 years of outstanding service to Webster.

Savage joined Webster in April 2002 as executive vice president, Commercial Banking. He was promoted to president in 2014 and to the board of directors of Webster Bank. He was appointed executive vice chairman in October 2015. He has overseen Private Banking and Human Resources, and has developed and guided the bank's programs for leadership development and employee engagement in recent years.

"Joe has been a cornerstone of Webster Bank's growth and progress, having made significant contributions on many fronts during his distinguished career, at first in Commercial Banking and then ever more broadly across Webster. Joe is a steward and champion of our values, known as the Webster Way, and our differentiated culture, and has continually brought them to life for customers and the bankers he leads," said James C. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer. "Joe's ceaseless focus on relationship value and his dedication to mentoring future leaders will help keep us 'strong at the core,' as Joe would say, for years to come."

Savage was instrumental in the early growth of Webster's Commercial Banking business. He guided Webster's successful entries into Fairfield County in 2002, the Boston market in 2009, and the metro New York City area in 2013. "Under Joe's leadership, Commercial Banking has grown five-fold in footings and revenue and is today Webster's most profitable business," Smith said.

Savage also has spent considerable time living up to the communities we serve. He is chairman of the MetroHartford Alliance, director of the Connecticut Bankers Association, and director emeritus for the Connecticut Business and Industry Association. He is a director of the Travelers Championship Committee, a member of the board of the Bushnell and a previous campaign chair for United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut.

Prior to joining Webster, Savage was executive vice president of the Communications and Energy banking group for CoBank in Denver from 1996 to 2002. Earlier in his career, he worked at the Bank of New York. He earned a bachelor's degree from Manhattan College and an MBA at Seton Hall University.

He spent the last twelve years of his professional career as the Senior Executive Vice President of Government Contracts at Agiltron, Inc., Woburn, MA.

While he was working at Agiltron he came home almost every weekend to be with his family that he loved so dearly. He drove sometimes almost 6 hours one way to be home for just one day to see his family he adored. He looked forward to the summers playing golf with his twins and opening his pool and spending weekends in the sun with his family and friends with a Fedora hat, shades on and a martini in hand. As his kids were growing up, he would have been found on the soccer field coaching his daughters and their friends as well as cheering them on throughout their collegiate athletic career.

He was cherished by so many people who loved spending time with him and saw him as a father figure. He was always seen with a big smile on his face. He was so proud of his family and his amazing generosity to all that knew him will never be forgotten. He was fortunate to have known his granddaughter Brooklyn who was the light of his life. The smile she had on her face every time she saw him will be treasured forever. The memories we have of him are too many to count but we will never ever forget them.

COOPERSTOWN – Robert F. O’Neill, a founder of the Bank of Cooperstown, has assumed the role of director emeritus of USNY Bank, the parent company.

While an honorary position, it reflects his role in the founding of both the Cooperstown bank and USNY itself.  “He and his family had the original vision to create a new bank in Cooperstown more than 10 years ago,” according to a statement from the bank.

O’Neill spent his career on Wall Street as a general partner of L.F. Rothschild and as an executive vice president of Tucker Anthony.  He was an officer of the Air Force and a graduate of Manhattan College with a degree in civil engineering.

He was past president and treasurer of the Cooperstown Country Club, as well as past treasurer of the Hyde Hall Museum.  He currently resides in Cooperstown and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with his wife, Marilyn.
The Bank of Cooperstown operates branches in Cooperstown and Oneonta.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for two

Good Afternoon All,

A couple of prayer requests. Yesterday, Thursday, Peggy I attended the Mass of Christian Burial and Memorial service of a friend of ours down here, Prudy Hansen, whose last words pretty much were, " I am ready to go to heaven, I want to be with Wally." We buried Wally about seven months ago and I think of him often and now Prudy as well. Wally was a United States Army Veteran, 1st Cavalry Division, a good man by any measurement ( I have two good friends on this list that are I think, 1st Cav. as well ) and they are trully good men, all. Prudy was a School Teacher, wife and mother to 5 Children. She always had a kind of enigmatic smile even to the end in her Dementia. Her smile was, some of her family said,  due to having survived bringing up three Daughters, two Sons, and a wonderful life with Wally. Please keep Prudy, Wally and their Family in your prayers as the Family mourn the loss of their loved one.

We have had in our Prayers Mrs. Ann Cronin, Wife of Fellow Jasper, John Cronin '59. Please keep Ann and John in your prayers as Ann continues to mend from seriius surgery. We pray for her continued and complete recovery.

Thank you. God Bless.

Colon, Philip J. (MC1962)

HIGH RENT MAY DOOM CATHOLIC CHAPEL THAT SURVIVED 9/11
BY KAREN MATTHEWS ASSOCIATED PRESS

*** begin quote ***

NEW YORK (AP) -- Parishioners at a New York City chapel that sheltered 9/11 first responders are praying for a miracle to save it from falling victim itself to the prosperity of its resurgent neighborhood.

St. Joseph's Chapel is living on archdiocese subsidies after the rent for the relatively small space tripled in 2014 to $264,000 a year.

I used to go there when I worked on Wall Street.

Tell me that there are no rich Catholics left on Wall Street that will save this chapel?

Like the little Greek Orthodox church that stood for so long.

It appears that the institutional Church is doomed. Like the dodo, passenger pigeon, and the Conservative Democrat.

This is just another example of the changing times on the road to hell.
