POSITRACTION: How often do folks "return to build ramp"?

Man Helps Amputee Up the Stairs, Then Returns to Build Ramp
    Uplift    Inspiring
by McKinley Corbley - Apr 7, 2017

*** begin quote ***

Jennifer Austin had long awaited the day that her husband would finally return from the hospital – but after weeks of time spent in the ICU, Don Austin arrived home on Friday only to find a frustrating obstacle standing in his way: the stairs to his front door.

Due to a host of health issues, Don had had his leg amputated below the knee. Though he had crutches handy, he still wasn’t strong enough to make it up the stairs to their house in Creston, Florida.

“There was no way I could get him up [the stairs] with the wheelchair,” said Jennifer. “There became a critical point where he ended up down on the concrete steps, and even with his mother’s help, there was not enough strength to lift him up.”

*** end quote ***

This is a great story for the moral lesson. How often do I not even see the original need? Let alone do I come back with an “army” to really fix the problem!

Very impressive!

I hope there’s a flow of blessings for that good man.

Hope I can do this sometime, any time, or even all the time.

Jim Fitzgerald, longtime AP writer and editor, dies at 66
By The Associated Press April 17, 2017 8:21 pm

*** begin quote ***

NEW YORK (AP) — Jim Fitzgerald, a longtime Associated Press writer and editor who helped shape the news service’s coverage of stories from terror attacks to the evolving landscape of aging, died Monday. He was 66.

Fitzgerald, who worked for the AP for 45 years before retiring in December, had been fighting leukemia for more than a year and a half. He died at a New York hospital, said his wife, Ellen Nimmons, a manager at AP’s headquarters.

During decades of covering New York City’s northern suburbs and editing local and national stories, Fitzgerald was known for handling some of the top news of the day with a can-do demeanor, professionalism, fairness and a gentlemanly grace. His trademark answer to an everyday “How are you?”: “Never better.”

*** and ***

Fitzgerald began working for the AP in part-time and temporary jobs as a Manhattan College student in 1971, then joined the news cooperative full time in New York in 1973, writing stories for radio and TV use. He moved on to what was then called the General Desk, editing stories for national and international distribution and helping supervise coverage of major news — and meeting Nimmons.

I’m so sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Jerry Cashman. When I was at Manhattan in the late 60’s, the Jasper Journal office on the top floor of Thomas Hall was my “clubhouse”. I was there every day between classes, just a couple of doors away from the Dean of Men’s office. So I saw Dr. Cashman and his assistant Mrs. Williamson just about every day, and they were two of the nicest people you could ever meet. They were never too busy to help you out or just chat. He was a good man. I’ll miss him.

Robert D. (Bob) English ’56 of Sands Point, N.Y. passed away on Sunday, April 16 at the age of 83.

An active philanthropist, English became chairman of the alumni annual giving program in 1983 and was elected to the board of trustees in 1986. English took the annual giving program to new levels of success and organized the Wall Street Seminar Series, beginning in 1985. He was a member of the board of trustees executive, development and nomination committees.

English graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School before attending Manhattan College, where he was part of the mile relay team that held the United States record. He anchored the Met mile relay championship team at the Penn Relays and was a member of four IC4A and six Metropolitan championship teams, earning him a spot in the Manhattan College Athletics Hall of Fame. English graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and was the recipient of an honorary doctorate of humane letters at the 1997 Fall Honors Convocation.

After college, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps., where he was an officer for 10 years and attained the rank of captain. English started his career with the New York Telephone Company, transitioned to selling insurance with Mutual of New York, and then moved his family to Michigan to enter the investment industry with Bache and Company. He then returned to New York and became a partner at Neuberger and Berman until his retirement.

English was also a member of Covenant House, the Wounded Marine Semper Fi Fund, Port Washington Port Youth Activities, and various other local charities.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patsy, his four children and his nine grandchildren. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Marine Semper Fi Fund.

Irishman shares his horrific World War II experience
James Wilson  @jameswilson1919 April 10, 2017 05:04 AM

*** begin quote ***

Even by the standards of the Greatest Generation, the life of Derryman Harry Callan has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Now 93 and living in north Dublin, Callan first went to sea at the tender age of 16.  Conscription was never introduced to Northern Ireland during the Second World War, but young Harry joined the Royal Navy anyway.

Joining HM Armed Forces at such a perilous time in British history was never going to be risk-free and Callan’s ship was captured.

*** end quote ***

When I read these stories, I want cry and yell.

‘I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!’ I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell – ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!… You’ve got to say, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: [screaming at the top of his lungs] “I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!” -- the character Howard Beale played by Peter Finch in the movie Network (1976)

How do we change this disastrous meme?

Take the advice of Nancy Reagan?

JUST SAY NO!
