Jennifer Austin had long awaited the day that her husband would finally return from the hospital – but after weeks of time spent in the ICU, Don Austin arrived home on Friday only to find a frustrating obstacle standing in his way: the stairs to his front door.
Due to a host of health issues, Don had had his leg amputated below the knee. Though he had crutches handy, he still wasn’t strong enough to make it up the stairs to their house in Creston, Florida.
“There was no way I could get him up [the stairs] with the wheelchair,” said Jennifer. “There became a critical point where he ended up down on the concrete steps, and even with his mother’s help, there was not enough strength to lift him up.”

This is a great story for the moral lesson. How often do I not even see the original need? Let alone do I come back with an “army” to really fix the problem!

Raymond Anthony Davis Jr.
Raymond Anthony Davis Jr. of Apex, NC passed away peacefully on April 8th at Transitions Life Care in Raleigh, NC after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Bronx NY on December 1, 1944 to Raymond and Mary Davis. He received his M.S. in Electrical Engineering at Polytechnic Institute, New York, NY and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Manhattan College in New York, NY.
He had multinational skills and extensively traveled all over the world: the USA, Europe, Caribbean, Asia, Brazil and Australia. He was knowledgeable in German, Spanish and French and studied Latin and Russian. Ray was an extremely intelligent man who although enjoying his 'retirement' still tutored friends and former colleagues in multiple subjects ranging from Algebra to Calculus.
Ray loved to laugh and enjoyed playing numerous practical jokes on his family and friends. He was a master of Photoshop and no one was safe from his antics. He enjoyed movies, oh so many movies, from history to horror movies, bowling, but mostly traveling.
He is survived by his loving mother Mary Davis of Cortlandt Manor, NY; two daughters Eva Marie (Scott) Compolattaro and Robin (Dan) Isidro both of Stamford, CT; a grandson Frank Compolattaro currently serving in the USMC and three granddaughters Jamie, Alyssa and Lori-Ann Compolattaro of Stamford, CT; sisters Kathy (Joe) Moker of New Milford, CT; Marianne (Jeff) Bischoff of Cortlandt Manor, NY; brothers Ronald Davis of Beacon, NY and Gerard Davis of Harrisburg, PA; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Raymond A. Davis Sr and a grandson Nicholas Compolattaro.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday April 19, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Parish, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Transitions LifeCare at www.transitionslifecare.org

Obituary
Richard Dennis Vogler, 70, of Canton, beloved husband of Kathleen (Padula) Vogler died Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Hartford Hospital.
He was born September 30, 1946 in Brighton, MA, son of the late Francis Alphonse and Ruth Lenore Vogler and had lived in Hartford prior to moving to Canton 43 years ago. He was a graduate of Manhattan College, Class of 1968, having received his Bachelors Degree in Engineering and his Masters Degree from University Of Connecticut.
Mr. Vogler was a Civil Engineer for the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation, and after retirement worked for UPS and the Transportation Security Administration.
Richard was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Collinsville and the Boy Scouts of America, earning the achievement of Eagle Scout working with Troop 177 in Collinsville for over a decade. He had a great love for working outdoors, affectionately being known as "Night Man" for often working after sunset on various projects such as cutting down trees, splitting wood, gardening, landscaping and building additions above and beyond. He was a gentle, strong, energetic and compassionate man who faced the challenges in his life with grace and dignity. He was always there to lend a helping hand or support to family, friends and strangers.
Besides his loving and devoted wife of 45 years he is survived by his son, Richard J. Vogler and his wife Heather, his grandchildren, Ashley, Isabella and Owen, of Unionville; his daughter, Kathryn Lenore Panzeri and her husband Gianpaolo of Plainville; his brother, Robert W. Vogler and his wife Barbara of Ridgefield; his nieces and nephew, Amy Kent, Cheryl Vogler, Elizabeth Vogler, Kristin Dempsey, Jennifer Oberfield and David Dempsey as well as several great and great-great nieces nephews.
Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton on Tuesday, April 18th, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 19th at St. Patrick's Church, 50 Church Street in Collinsville. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, 32 Collins Road, Collinsville. In lieu of traditional funeral flowers, Richard's family requests that a perennial or annual from Riverside Nursery in Collinsville (860-693-2285) be sent to be used throughout the services. NEW YORK (AP) — Jim Fitzgerald, a longtime Associated Press writer and editor who helped shape the news service’s coverage of stories from terror attacks to the evolving landscape of aging, died Monday. He was 66.
Fitzgerald, who worked for the AP for 45 years before retiring in December, had been fighting leukemia for more than a year and a half. He died at a New York hospital, said his wife, Ellen Nimmons, a manager at AP’s headquarters.
During decades of covering New York City’s northern suburbs and editing local and national stories, Fitzgerald was known for handling some of the top news of the day with a can-do demeanor, professionalism, fairness and a gentlemanly grace. His trademark answer to an everyday “How are you?”: “Never better.”

I’m so sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Jerry Cashman. When I was at Manhattan in the late 60’s, the Jasper Journal office on the top floor of Thomas Hall was my “clubhouse”. I was there every day between classes, just a couple of doors away from the Dean of Men’s office. So I saw Dr. Cashman and his assistant Mrs. Williamson just about every day, and they were two of the nicest people you could ever meet. They were never too busy to help you out or just chat. He was a good man. I’ll miss him.

POUGHKEEPSIE - Rudolph P. Russo, 87, died unexpectedly on April 6, 2017 in Tucson, AZ.
Born in Flushing on March 12, 1930, to Santo and Santina (Muzzicato) Russo, Rudy graduated from Pawling High School and continued on to earn a BA in political science from Manhattan College. After graduating from Columbia Law School in 1953, he enlisted in the US Navy, attended Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, and served as an Airborne Combat Intelligence Officer. He was a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserves for many years.
He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1957 and has practiced law in Dutchess County for 60 years. Mr. Russo developed a keen interest in politics and public policy as a town judge and as the attorney for the towns of Beekman and Pawling. He was Chairman and attorney of the Dutchess County Legislature and also the attorney for Dutchess Community College.
From 1994 to 2003 he was the Chairman and CEO of Colorocs Information Technologies, an Atlanta company that developed cutting edge color imaging technology. He helped the company patent several aspects of this innovative technology and then licensed these patents to major manufactures of color printers and copiers.
In 2014, he was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of Salisbury Bank and Trust Company where he served on the Trust and the Audit committees.
Rudy was an avid sports fan. He played baseball in high school and was always ready for a pickup basketball game. He constantly astounded his friends with his vast knowledge of sports trivia. As an adult he honed his tennis game and spent many enjoyable hours with his tennis partners at the Poughkeepsie Tennis Club.
Rudy is survived by Nancy Rubsam, his beloved companion of many years, and by his daughters, Julie Kernodle and husband Kenneth of Longview, WA, Jean Atkinson of Tucson, AZ, Katherine Russo and wife L. Clark also of Tucson and by his sons Stephen and wife Cindy of Poughkeepsie and Michael and wife Keri of Tucson. He is blessed with eleven grandchildren: Michael, Andrea, Katie, Alyssa, Stephanie, Sydney, Dylan, Jared, Ashley, William and Elizabeth, three siblings: Carmela Russo of Poughquag, Agnes Treacy of Fishkill and Nicholas Russo and wife Nancy of Red Hook, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean (Wallace), and his daughter, Patricia.
Nancy Rubsam will receive Rudy's friends and family members at the couple's home on Thursday, April 27 from 5 to 7 pm.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 28 from 4 to 7 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A memorial service will be offered on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 10 am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, followed by interment with military honors in the family plot at St. Denis Cemetery.
There will be a Celebration of Rudy's Life at a later date.

Born in New York City, Walter was the son of the late Rollin & Helen (Cowan) Caughey, and the husband of Dianne (Schwartz) Caughey.
A retired Mechanical Engineer with Raytheon, Walter received his bachelors degree from Manhattan College, and later obtained his Masters Degree from the Polytechnic Institute of New York University.
He was a devotee of science, the arts, and literature.
Besides his wife Dianne of 48 years, he is survived by his daughter, Jennifer of Hermosa Beach, CA, his brother, John of NY, and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Walters life by gathering for his funeral service in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St., Framingham on Tuesday, April 25th, at 4 P.M., followed by a time of visitation until 8 P.M. LONGTIME BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEMBER ROBERT ENGLISH ’56 PASSES AWAY
English was actively involved in the College’s alumni community.
Robert D. (Bob) English ’56 of Sands Point, N.Y. passed away on Sunday, April 16 at the age of 83.
An active philanthropist, English became chairman of the alumni annual giving program in 1983 and was elected to the board of trustees in 1986. English took the annual giving program to new levels of success and organized the Wall Street Seminar Series, beginning in 1985. He was a member of the board of trustees executive, development and nomination committees.
English graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School before attending Manhattan College, where he was part of the mile relay team that held the United States record. He anchored the Met mile relay championship team at the Penn Relays and was a member of four IC4A and six Metropolitan championship teams, earning him a spot in the Manhattan College Athletics Hall of Fame. English graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and was the recipient of an honorary doctorate of humane letters at the 1997 Fall Honors Convocation.
After college, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps., where he was an officer for 10 years and attained the rank of captain. English started his career with the New York Telephone Company, transitioned to selling insurance with Mutual of New York, and then moved his family to Michigan to enter the investment industry with Bache and Company. He then returned to New York and became a partner at Neuberger and Berman until his retirement.
English was also a member of Covenant House, the Wounded Marine Semper Fi Fund, Port Washington Port Youth Activities, and various other local charities.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patsy, his four children and his nine grandchildren. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Marine Semper Fi Fund.
