POSITRACTION: "love people and use things" — Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

2017-Mar-12

2017 03Mar 04 Bishop Sheen quote

[TIP ‘o’ the HAT to: my classmate and high school friend Trynosky, Stephen K. (MP64MC68) who posted in on Facebook.]

I wonder who in the Church hierarchy he pissed off that he never was elevated to cardinal? Always found him impressive to listen to. Remember when it was required watching when I was in grammar school. The tests about his show were always an essay. You could cheat by asking a friend the next day. I used to just take my F’s like a true PIA. They didn’t count for anything. And, my Mom ratted me out the Brothers that I’d seen the show. I’d watch the show because I liked him. But hated — and still hate — being manipulated, propagandized, or told what to do. Laugh! I’m sure my fellow alums might do much better. Take what you want from this, but I still liked his sermons even today.

Hope this makes you laugh.

COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) likes the ND sidestep

2017-Mar-12

>In this week’s endnote, you ask:
>
>"Do you remember March 20, 2009?
>That was the day the University of Notre Dame announced they would honor newly-elected President Obama as their
>Commencement speaker.Under intense pressure, Notre Dame President Fr. John Jenkins called the invitation a
>“catalyst for dialogue.” He noted that Presidents of both political parties had spoken in the past, and that the invitation
>was in no way an endorsement of President Obama’s well known hostility to Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life.
>Will Notre Dame continue their tradition and invite President Trump?
>*** end quote ***
>I doubt it and that’s what will expose what’s wrong with “Catholic” institutions. We’ll see.
>Update: CV reports that ND didn’t invite DJT45, but did invite the VP. Does that tell you anything.

It tells me that the VP is from their state (Indiana) and sidesteps the problem of inviting a man who says it is OK to grab women by their privates without their consent. Sounds like a win-win - not that I approve of Pence...

Thanks, as always, for your good work!

[JR: Just for the record, I never said it was “Saint Trump”. I am sure I whine a lot about that he was “the prettiest horse in the glue factory coral”. That being said, I BELIEVE what this DEMONSTRATES to us that what Fr. John said originally was less that “the truth”. Yes, I can handle “the truth”. The “Secular Progressives” … … (I am not sure what the correct “-ist” is to label them with: Socialist, Marxist, Communist? Maybe just Totalitarian!) … … have taken over the Universities and even the Church. See I’m just a simple fat old white guy injineer and I’d call that a lie. I don’t approve of any of the current politicians — the last Presidential candidate I supported was Ron Paul. But everything today is about Socialism and “Secular Progressivism”. So maybe Fr. John could stop spinning and just say that ND is a “Big D Democratic Socialist” institution. What a disgrace.]

[JR: I appreciate the compliment and I wish I had more and better news to report.]

JOBIT: Beardsley, James A. [MC???? RIP] on 2017-Mar-12

2017-Mar-14

http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=James-Beardsley&lc=2632&pid=184493669&mid=7328090

In Memory of
James A Beardsley
April 2, 1927 - March 12, 2017
Obituary

An extraordinary gentleman. Three words that best define Jim. Jim Beardsley, a kind and gentle soul, changed peoples' lives. He enjoyed helping others and was good at it. He was a person of warmth, boundless enthusiasm and positive generosity.

James Beardsley, 89, son of Franklin and Irene Beardsley died, after a brief illness, on Sunday, March 12th surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on April 2, 1927 in Bronx, NY. He graduated from Manhattan College and was a 1st Lieutenant Reserve Commissioned Officer in the US Army. In 1949 Jim married and lived in Yonkers, NY before moving to Clinton with his wife, Jackie, in 1956. He worked for several insurance companies before opening his own agency, Beardsley Insurance Agency.

Jim was a volunteer extraordinaire. He was very active in numerous town organizations and had a tremendous love for his community. Some of his civic and local involvements were: Board of Directors of Clinton Chamber of Commerce, Chairman and member of the Police Commission, Chairman of the Board of Tax Review, Chairman of Community Development Action Plan Agency, Chairman of the Republican Town Committee, member of Westbrook Elks, Justice of the Peace, Chairman and member of the Park and Recreation Commission serving as a founder and president of the Clinton Touchdown Club, coaching several youth teams for many years. He started the recreation department's "Biddy Basketball" program and was chief umpire for Little League. Most important, he was a 50 year member of the Clinton Rotary Club and three time president, Chairman of Rotary Scholarship Foundation, head chef for the bluefish dinners at the town's Bluefish Festival, and proud founder, beginning in 1997, of the Clinton Rotary Cancer Relief Fund which has provided over $300,000 in financial assistance to cancer victims and their families.

Jim received several recognition awards for his community involvement: Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award, Town of Clinton Spirit of the Year Award, Irishman of the Year, Republican Town Committee Distinguished Service Award, and Rotary International's Paul Harris Award.

He was an avid fan of the NY Yankees, NY Giants, Boston Celtics, and UCONN basketball. Jim embraced and thoroughly enjoyed the many wondrous aspects of life. He was selfless and humble, always ready with a joke, funny story, or his famous "words of wisdom" he shared with his Rotary "family". What a contagious smile he had and anyone who knew him sensed his genuineness. Many were drawn to his passion for life, infectious humor and dedication to family and friends. With a warm, beautiful personality, he gave undivided attention to all and engaged everyone to make you feel special and valuable.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Jim is survived by his daughter, Deborah Richards (Mark) and son James G. Beardsley (Dora), a proud grandfather to Kyle Richards (Jackie), Drew Richards (Priscilla), Kimberly Beardsley-Carr (Mitch), Timothy Beardsley, and Gregory Radawich (Sarah), James Radawich (Michella), David Radawich (Heather). Jim adored his eight great grandchildren: Adeline and Brooks Richards, Avery Beardsley-Carr, Tyson, Athena, Zoe Beardsley, and Quinn and Miles Radawich. Jim was predeceased by his wife of 54 years Jacqulyn, daughter Joanna Beardsley-Brecciaroli, and two brothers Franklin and Gerard.

We were blessed to have Jim in our lives. His memories are reminders of the past and the importance of the present. These will remain in the hearts of family and friends.Calling hours will be held at Swam Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St, Clinton, CT 06413 on Friday, March 17, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at First Congregational Church, 55 Church Road (US Rte 1) Clinton, CT 06413 on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11 a.m. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family, at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Clinton, CT. To sign the online guest book go to www.swanfh.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to Clinton Rotary CRF, P.O. Box 558, Clinton, CT 06413.

Then, suddenly, the ban was lifted. Since the NAIB champion was, at the time, one of eight teams invited to the U.S. Olympic Trials, pressure mounted from East Coast schools to allow black players to participate. The firmest stances came from schools such as Manhattan College, Siena, Albany – not, it’s worth noting, from Wooden and Indiana State.

Cloone's Mike Dillon to receive lifetime award

Mike Dillon will be the first recipient of the 'Lifetime Achievement Award.'

The New York GAA is holding its Annual Awards Banquet in Antun’s, Queens on Saturday, March 25 and this year the Association is introducing a new award, namely the 'Lifetime Achievement Award'.

The first recipient of this honour will be Leitrim’s Mike Dillon. Mike, a native of Cloone, had a distinguished footballing career at club, college and county levels, achieving much success in Ireland, London and New York.

He was born in the early thirties, and began his secondary education with the Presentation Brothers in Carrick-on-Shannon, but later switched to the famous bastion of Gaelic football, St. Mel’s. Here, in this nursery of football, Mike’s career flourished.

*** and ***

Unfortunately for Mike and his team mates the interprovincial games were played on Sundays, and the Bishop of Ardagh, a Dr. McNamee would not allow his students to play on Sundays, lest it interfered with their spiritual formation.

So Mike and his team mates were denied a great opportunity to showcase their skills against the crème de la crème of college players.

*** and ***

Besides a great sporting career, Mike also enhanced his academic credentials in New York. He earned a B.A. from Manhattan College and an M.B.A. from Fordham University.

He rose to prominence in the corporate boardroom, becoming an executive with the media giant C.B.S. In addition, he and his late wife Mary, ran a very successful hotel resort in the Catskills. It was always a very welcoming sojourn for Leitrim exiles.

Mike has two daughters Mary and Deirdre, and seven grandsons. Mike continues to enjoy his football and is a regular at Gaelic Park. Over the years Mike has been a great benefactor to Leitrim football at home and abroad, the New York football team and the County Leitrim Society of New York.

ENDNOTE: The Pope's Problem with Basic Economics

2017-March-18

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2017/02/the-popes-problem-with-basic-economics.html

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2017
The Pope's Problem with Basic Economics

*** begin quote ***

As Rothbard has written:

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a 'dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.

When it comes to economics, the Pope's views reflect the uninformed views of most of the masses. He is one among billions.

Catholics and atheists should give him no special attention on this topic.

*** end quote ***

Unfortunately, I think that Pontiffs, straying outside of faith and morals, have damaged the image of the Church.

This Pope’s embrace of “climate change”, “greedy businessmen”, and “pedophilia” has just destroyed the moral high ground that he should occupy.

It’s just more “watermelon”— green on the outside and red on the inside — trying to take away individual liberty and give power to Gooferments.

Argh!

It’s hard to be a big C “catholic” any more.
