POSITRACTION: A mourning Mom gets a gift

Late Daughter Unknowingly Left Priceless Gift for Grieving Mom
by McKinley Corbley - Feb 6, 2017

*** begin quote ***

This mother had been in mourning ever since her 16-year-old daughter Macy Mathis was killed in a car accident. Her mind was eased, however, when she discovered the 25 letters left behind for her.

Each letter asks only to be opened when Cindy Mathis, the mother currently residing in Tifton, Georgia, feels a certain emotion. She found the first note a month after Macy’s death when she was cleaning out the trunk of her car. The front of the envelope was emblazoned with: “Open when you can’t sleep.”

*** end quote ***

What a great “leave” for grieving Mom.

Can’t imagine how that makes her feel.

Wish I had “directions” from my long passed wife. She was always the “smart one”.

Maybe we should all leave a legacy like this?

QUADRANGLE: Sullivan, Natalie [MC2014] disagrees with “fraudulent generation”

2017-Feb-22

https://mcquad.org/2017/02/21/letter-to-the-editor/

Posted on February 21, 2017 by The Quadrangle in Letters, Opinions & Editorials

NATALIE SULLIVAN, Class of 2014 writes:

My name is Natalie Sullivan, and I am an alumnus of Manhattan College as well as the former editor-in-chief of the Quadrangle.

I am writing to express my disappointment in Manhattan College’s lack of response to the recent video of MC’s basketball coach, Steve Masiello, calling millennials a “fraudulent generation” who gets frustrated when things don’t go their way – much like Masiello did in this tantrum after losing to Siena.

When I saw this video posted to friends’ and fellow alumni’s Facebook walls, I was humiliated. As a student who was a senior when the Jaspers made it to the NCAA championship, when Masiello was found to have lied on his resume about his college education, I am truly astonished by Manhattan College’s lack of a suitable response to both, and as to why this PR nightmare is permitted to continue publicly embarrassing our school.

Masiello’s comments in this video are especially disturbing, having known and attended classes with some of the individuals that he coached who certainly were not given everything on a silver platter, and did not give up as soon as things did not go their way, as Masiello implied in his statement.

When I tell people that I got my degree from Manhattan College, I would like to hear about our world-class engineering program, or growing and thriving communications program, or our extensive community outreach. Instead, the first thing to come to many people’s mind are the incidents with our basketball coach.
I would like to remind Mr. Masiello that when he speaks in a public forum, he is the face of Manhattan College – both current students and alumni – whether he likes it or not. His opinions in this video do not reflect my own, and do not reflect the opinions of my beloved professors and fellow alumni of the school, and yet this is the reputation that has been forced upon us and has now been written about and broadcast on national and global news networks.

As one of the highest paid staff on Manhattan College’s payroll, Mr. Masiello should feel obligated to represent the quality education offered by our school, and vouch for the great character that I know to be true of the students and staff at Manhattan College, instead of publicly bashing us and accusing us of being fraudulent.

Mainers should develop a strategy to capitalize on our assets and determine how they can be used to stimulate the state’s economy and generate good-paying jobs. I believe nuclear energy can be an important part of that strategy.

Colgate Women’s Games conclude after weeks of preliminaries

*** begin quote ***

There’s a beauty to track and field that’s not experienced in other sports. Their loyalty and dedication is simply to running, to their team and, without malice, to their sneaker company. Of course, politics seems to play a part in all we do, but once the race begins, that gun sounds, runners run. Their success is determined by speed—their speed, their times, the records that an athlete is able to set.

*** and ***

There are many interesting stories, from Lauren Princz, 14 years old from Fernwood Avenue Middle School, Egg Harbor Township, N.J., who won her first professional meet, 55 meters, and one of Colgate’s most prestigious awards, Most Promising Newcomer, to Lisa Edwards from the Bronx, who’s been competing for 33 years, finishing first in the 200 meters.

*** and ***

Edwards, a Manhattan College graduate who works for the Board of Education, just returned from competing in Australia. She’s participated in Colgate for more than 25 years. She works out two to three hours daily.

“It’s hard work,” she stated, but she is inspired by watching the younger athletes participate. “Looking at their times pushes me,” she said.

Edwards also runs to stay in shape and to have fun. “Running is a great exercise for women,” she said. “It allows me to eat what I want, and not put on weight, because I’m always working out, though my metabolism has slowed down as I’ve gotten older.”

ENDNOTE: The best Super Bowl party post and video

2017-Feb-25

FROM FACEBOOK

2017 02Feb 10 Kay superbowl

# - # - # - # - #

Of all the Super Bowl party posts I’ve seen, this one was by far and away the best.

That’s true charity.

Yes, it doesn’t save their lives — but then maybe it does give them hope.

I’m shamed that I didn’t think of something like that or take action like that. My failings. Donating money to charities seems like a pittance in comparison.

I’m sure my fellow Jaspers do much better.

Hope this fellow wins the lotto or something else big.

But then he’s already stored his treasure in Heaven imho.

Loved the video with the fellow with two plates of food — one piled high with hot dogs. Made me sad.
