POSITRACTION: Slackliner pro saves a skier

Home Heroes Tightrope Walker Scales Ski Wire to Rescue Dangling Man
by McKinley Corbley - Jan 6, 20170

*** begin quote ***

What could have been a horrifying ski accident turned into a larger than life rescue thanks to a tightrope artist jumping into action.

An unidentified skier was riding a lift chair up a mountain at Arapahoe Basin in Colorado when he attempted to disembark the unit and got his backpack stuck on the rigging. Instead of skiing away from the lift, he went around the bullwheel and was sent back down the mountain. But after the lift operator turned off the machine, disaster struck.

Due to his struggling, the backpack straps slipped up to the man’s neck, cutting off his air supply until he fell unconscious.

Luckily, 28-year-old Mickey Wilson, a part-time ski instructor and professional slackliner, was riding in the chair behind him.

Mickey and the other nearby skiers attempted to make a human tower to reach the man, whom he described as a “friend of a friend”. When they kept toppling off of each other, however, Mickey had “a eureka moment”.

*** end quote ***

What a great thing to save another human being.

The fact that it was done in such an unusual maker is really “neat” and essential to the rescue.

I guess we should always be alert to help out fellow human beings!

Getting to work: Expect these changes in 2017

To kick off 2017, lohud reporters are assessing the state of critical issues on their beats. In this story, reporter Matt Coyne looks at the state of transportation in the Lower Hudson Valley.

Plenty is changing when it comes to transportation.

From driverless cars to high-speed commuter rail to massive infrastructure investment under President-elect Donald Trump, how Americans get from point A to point B could soon look a lot different.

Here in the Lower Hudson Valley, there's a lot to keep an eye on — from the nearly complete new Tappan Zee Bridge to Metro-North and the Westchester County Airport. It all means 2017 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for transportation in Westchester and Rockland counties.
On the beat

At some yet-to-be specified point in 2017, the new Tappan Zee Bridge will reach its biggest milestone yet: One of the $3.9 billion project’s two spans will open to traffic, initially carrying cars going in both directions. At that point, the old bridge will be shut down.

The new bridge is undoubtedly the biggest, and certainly most visible, transportation project in the state and possibly the country. When all is said and done, the new bridge is expected to connect Westchester and Rockland counties without the need for major structural repairs for the next 100 years.

*** and ***

Matt Coyne is the transportation reporter at the Journal News and lohud.com. He joined the paper in 2015 and covered cops, courts, heroin abuse and northern Westchester politics and development before taking over the transportation beat. Previously, he had covered schools and sports in Connecticut. He graduated from Manhattan College in 2011.

William Rudolf "Bill" Bensch
1943 - 2017
Obituary

William "Bill" Rudolf Bensch

73, of Indianapolis, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 14, 2017.

He was born July 31, 1943 in New York City to the late Rudolf and Phyllis DeGuard Bensch. Bill graduated from Archbishop Malloy High School, received his BA from Manhattan College and his Masters Degree from Purdue University. At Purdue Bill met Diane Kjonaas, who would become his wife of more than 46 years. Together they had four children. Bill was employed as a Biochemist at Eli Lilly and Company for 35 years, retiring in 2008.

Bill was active in several area churches including St. Thomas Aquinas, Indianapolis 1st Church of the Nazarene and East 91st Street Christian. Passionate about theology and ancient history, Bill was the leader of dozens of Bible studies, Sunday School classes and small groups.

Bill was a very active participant in the lives of his four children, volunteering his time as a soccer coach, Bible quizzing director and science fair judge. For many years he was a volunteer with the Lawrence Central Performing Arts Association where he supported his children in both the marching band and show choir.

Though never exposed to it as a child, Bill became an active camper in his adult life, taking his family on camping trips to National parks all over the United States and Canada. He also organized a yearly camping trip that included dozens of families from Indianapolis 1st Church.

Bill became a Master Gardener through the Purdue Extension program in 2010. His other hobbies included photography, music appreciation and woodworking.

Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease shortly after his retirement, Bill and his family were supported by many volunteers and organizations around the city. The family would especially like to thank the kind and caring staffs at the following organizations: the Alzheimer's Support Group at E91, especially it's leader, Dawn; the Still Waters Adult Day Center at Castleton United Methodist; the Reflections Unit at Hancock Regional Hospital; the Cherished Memories Unit at Copper Trace and Heart to Heart Hospice.

The family would also like to give a special thanks to Bill's daughter, Kristen, who moved home from California to assist in Bill's care and support her mother, Diane, in this journey. With Kristen's support, and Diane's service to her husband, Bill was able to remain at home until the final weeks of his life.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation from 11:00 a.m. at East 91st Street Christian Church, 6049 East 91st Street, Indianapolis 46250.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Diane; sons, Nathan (Tara), Tim (Kacy), and Ben Bensch; daughter, Kristen Bensch; and grandchildren, Aidan, Maddie, Quinlyn and Alexis Bensch.

In lieu of flowers or other gifts the family requests that Memorial contributions may be made to the Still Waters Adult Day Center at Castleton United Methodist Church. Checks can be made to "Still Waters Adult Day Center," 7160 Shadeland Station, Door #3, Indianapolis, IN 46256. Final care and arrangements entrusted to Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel. www.shirleybrothers.com

Police & Fire
Putnam Names County Undersheriff
Paul Boscia, who just recently retired from the Sheriff's Office, will take the post.
By Lanning Taliaferro (Patch Staff) - January 19, 2017 7:08 am ET

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith announces that he has named Paul Boscia as the new Undersheriff of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Boscia’s appointment fills a vacancy in the position following the untimely death on Nov. 15, 2016 of the previous long-time Undersheriff, Peter Convery.

Boscia’s official appointment as Undersheriff will commence on Feb. 6 and is effective through the remainder of Smith’s current elected term of office, which runs through Dec. 31, 2017.

*** and ***

In addition to his long police service, Boscia has served his country in the Air Force, first serving as an active member for ten years before joining the Sheriff’s Office and then continuing as a member of the Air Force Reserve until retiring in 2006 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Boscia holds a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He and his wife, Regina, reside in Putnam County, where they have raised their four children.

“The death of Undersheriff Peter Convery left a big hole in our hearts and it also left big shoes to fill in leading the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office and in serving our citizens,” said Smith in the announcement. “I am grateful to Paul Boscia and to his wife, Regina, for temporarily putting their retirement plans on hold and for answering the call to duty for the people of Putnam County.

Following the Sheriff’s announcement, Boscia said that he is “honored by the Sheriff’s appointment” and that he is “privileged to serve as his Undersheriff.” Boscia went on to express confidence that his long experience in the Sheriff’s Office will enable him to serve the County well in his new role: “The Sheriff is an outstanding leader and I am prepared, together with the very capable command staff of the Sheriff’s Office, to assist him in fulfilling our mission to serve and protect the community with professionalism and dedication."

Riverdale, NY – Manhattan's home match-up with Monmouth slated for  Friday, February 10 at 9:00 pm has been flexed to ESPNU and can also be accessed via the WatchESPN platform.
Last year, Jaspers rallied for a thrilling 78-71 win over the eventual MAAC Regular Season Hawks at Draddy Gymnasium. Take a look at the highlights from that victory:

The MAAC telecast schedule will feature 10 netflex games during the 2016-17 season. The netflex format allows ESPN to pick any game on schedule for the selected date to air on the designated platform (ESPN2, ESPNU, or ESPN3). ESPN will announce which game has been selected for the wildcard telecast 21 days out. The format enables the MAAC and ESPN flexibility to showcase the best possible matchups.

ENDNOTE: Don't let your story or wisdom go unpublished

HOW TO SELF-PUBLISH A BOOK
Posted by: By Tom Woods | October 12, 2016

*** begin quote ***

Even though nonfiction titles sell fewer copies than you may have thought, they are not for that reason a waste of time, particularly if you derive intellectual pleasure, as I do, from the challenge that comes with writing them. Writing a book can open major print, radio, and television outlets to you and your ideas, thereby giving you a chance to spread your message to a wider audience than just the reading public. Authors receive speaking invitations that give them the opportunity to reach a broader audience still, while adding to their (erratic) income. And so on.

If you want to write a book, then, just be sure to go into it with your eyes open: you probably won’t retire on the royalties.

But there are other reasons to write a book, even financial ones. A book can yield income indirectly. For one thing, rightly or wrongly, being an author gives you automatic credibility with lots of people. As I noted above, a book can open doors for you on the speaking circuit and in the media. It can promote your business, service, or product, though you need to be subtle about this.

*** end quote ***

I think there is another more significant reason to self-publish — to capture and memorialize for all time some of your dikw (i.e., data, information, knowledge, wisdom), your memes and paradigms, or your feelings.

I’ve done a little of each —

Maybe someday in someway, this might be useful to someone.

I was at my Uncle Big John’s wake, and his younger brother approached me about him writing a book. Of course, I encouraged him.

After we talked, I wonder how much of Big John’s stories and tales went with him. And it made me sadder.

Don’t let yours die with you. Get them on paper for whatever reason.
