POSITRACTION: "Greater love hath no man" than to make a big sacrifice

Family who adopted friend's 6 kids after her death gets life-changing surprise

A Virginia family of 11 just got the surprise of their lives while appearing on the Rachael Ray show as they were awarded a $90,000 college fund. She also awarded the family brand new furniture. Stephanie and Donnie Culley were already parents of three children, but in May, everything changed. Stephanie's close friend, Beth Laitkep, a single mother of six lost her battle with breast cancer. The household then grew to 11 members after the Culleys obliged and welcomed the children into their home.

Wow, I don’t know if I could do that.

Single mom! Where’s the “sperm donor”? (It’s not right to call him a “Dad”. Argh!)

It’s good to see that there are still good people out there who will take up the challenges of life.

Inspiring.

Hope all my challenges are little ones!

JFACEBOOK: Steinberg, Robert "Bob Stei" (MC1993) remembers a friend

2016-Sep-25

FROM FACEBOOK

Bob Stei shared The Kimberly Fund's event.
9 hrs ·
Every year I grab the family(which was just Melissa and I when this started) and we head up to the Bronx. For this who I just met over the last year, here is what it briefly is all about: When I transferred to Manhattan College in 1990, I befriended a young woman named Kimberly Kennedy. Within days, we found out we had too much in common and became the closest of friends. A year later, I became close with the family as well. Kim and I would talk on the phone for hours(usually midnight-4 am) and laugh non stop. Our running joke was that we had to buy tee shirts saying, "No, we are not going out." I got a call in May of 2001 from my friend Chris telling me that Kimberly had passed away suddenly from a rare case of bacteria meningitis. My world was shocked for ages, and there has been a friendship avoid left for life. And yes, my oldest is named after her. Her college(which was Manhattan's "sister school" at the time) set up a scholarship in her name shortly after her untimely death. Every year, we get together, listen to a great speaker, have fun and enjoy life. Tonight is the night and I say this every year this time.. If you are missing someone, honor them today. If you aren't, honor somebody you love.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for two

2016-Sep-25

Good Evening All,

We continue to pray for Victoria A. who has been in our prayers. On Saturday, she was taken to the Emergency Room having become extremely weakened. We pray that she is stabilized and that the MDs are able to find what has caused her extreme weakness.

A prayer of thanks for Mandy who has been in our prayers. She delivered a healthy Baby Girl. We celebrate this most wondrous of God's Gifts and share in Mandy's joy. Mandy has shared her thanks for all your prayers and good wishes.

Thank you. God Bless.

A sad announcement. Key West Lou COMMENTARY will be no more. The column presently on the stands is the last that will appear in KONK Life.

I have been doing the column ten years. Loved doing it. Nothing is forever, however. It was time to put the column to bed.

This weekend was the first in years that I  had to myself for other than the column. Which means I had nothing to do saturday and sunday. I enjoyed my first lazy weekend in years.

Guy de Boer publishes KONK Life. I thank him for the opportunity to write. I shall be eternally grateful. He never questioned content or positions taken. I was a free agent at all times.

COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) What, exactly, is the problem with providing bathrooms for transgendered people?

2016-Sep-26

Toner, Mike (MC1972)

Last week's endnote...
ENDNOTE: Massachusetts wants a parish fish fry to be considered “secular"?

What, exactly, is the problem with providing bathrooms for transgendered people? Not sure I understand the threat to our "religious freedom" - unless that "freedom" is interpreted to mean freedom to be mean-spirited and discriminatory...

# - # - # - # - #

Mike:

Let me see if I can itemize the problems I have with this Taxchusetts Gooferment diktat.

(1) Private property

(2) Interference with “religion”

(3) Public interest in “transgendered freedom”

(4) The proper role of religion in secular issues

(5) The overall over reach of the regulatory state

That should about do it.

I’m sure that the good people involved in the Church in question would approach every one with charity and provide such toilet facilities as they possibly could. When I had asthma and the bathrooms were downstairs, I was offered the use of the bathroom in the sacristy. I’m sure that discrete arrangements could be made. And would be. BUT, retrofitting a special bathroom would be fantastically expensive in most old structures. Gooferment Skrules have nurses’ offices with bathrooms that can be provided.

So the diktat improperly infringes on private property, interferes with the free exercise of religion, and is a total overreach into the private social space.

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) shares what ESPN did not see fit to show

Good Morning All,

Pete Sweeney shared this incredible footage that ESPN did not see fit to show and I felt, as we say a little prayer for our United States Of America, these shots would resonate with you. Perhaps you might even see your way clear to share it. Thank you for your prayers, your steadfast support for those in need of our prayers and for being you. Thank you Peter. Thank you all. For those who saw the football game on Monday.
We missed this view.
Those who attended the game said it was extremely emotional to see the entire bowl of the stadium turn red, white and blue. It took 90 workers two weeks to get all of the colored card boards mounted under each seat.  Each piece of card board had eye slits in them so the fans could hold up the colored sheet and still see through the eye slits.  Every seat had to have the proper card, with no mistakes, to make this happen.
This is what ESPN failed to show you Monday night.  Apparently, they thought their commercials were more important than showing this scene for about 5seconds.

ROBERT DONAHUE
Obituary

Robert Michael Donahue, 88

Law partner, recreational athlete and 'great wit full of strong opinions'

Robert Michael Donahue passed peacefully at his home in St. George, Staten Island, N.Y., on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2016; he was 88.

Born in Brooklyn in 1928, Bob attended Bishop Laughlin High School and later graduated from Manhattan College. After college, Bob served in the Korean War and took advantage of the G.I. Bill to graduate from Brooklyn Law School in 1956.Along with Joe Holzka and Dick Kuhn, he formed Holzka, Donahue and Kuhn, a St. George-based law firm; they were later to add Joan Nerlino-Caddell as a partner to their firm.

Bob practiced law on Staten Island for over 45 years and was an avid supporter of the Noble Maritime Collection and Greenbelt Conservancy and other various civic organizations on Staten Island.

As a resident of West Brighton, Bob and his wife, Bernadette, raised five children, Maura, Robert, Claire, Elizabeth and Neil. In December 2014, Bob became a proud grandfather to his grandson, Marcus. In 1996, five years after the sudden passing of Bernadette, Bob found love again with Dorothy Myhre and is survived by her as well as three stepsons, Leif, Erik and Karl, and six step grandchildren.

He is also survived by his older sister, Alice Callahan, and younger sister, Margaret Reydel, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

A fitness pioneer, Bob gave up smoking and started running after a life-threatening cardiac event in his early 40. In the late 1960s, it was such an uncommon sight to see someone jogging in Clove Lakes Park that he was routinely stopped by strangers and police asking him, "Why are you running, is anything wrong?" In 1978, in honor of successfully making it to age 50, he rode from New York City to Montauk, N.Y., in one day. He would repeat this feat numerous times throughout his life as well as undertake a number of bicycle trips in Europe.

In addition to biking, Bob enjoyed sailing, swimming, skiing, cooking and telling stories. Though a stickler for accurate details in his law practice, Bob never let facts get in the way of telling a good story. Always a great wit and brimming with strong opinions, he spent his later years a devoted fan of Rachel Maddow.

Bob will be missed by family and friends. Services will be held at the Harmon Funeral Home on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please forward any donations to the Visiting Nurses Service of New York Hospice and Palliative Care, email: http://www.vnsny.org/community/support-vnsny/donate/direct-your-donation/ or by mail: VNSNY-Hospice, Attention: Stephanie Steele, 4th Floor, 1250 Broadway, N.Y., N.Y. 10001.Harmon Funeral Home571 Forest Ave.Staten Island, N.Y. 10310(718) 442-5056

Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War A new film directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky
Airing September 20th @ 9/8C  on PBS

*** begin quote ***

Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War is an account of a daring rescue mission that occurred on the precipice of World War II. It tells the story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a Unitarian minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who left their children behind in the care of their parish and boldly committed to multiple   life-threatening missions in Europe. Over two dangerous years they helped to save hundreds of imperiled political dissidents and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation across Europe.

I happened to watch this.

I’m not a fan of PBS and the fact that they use tax funding to put the “liberal viewpoint” down my craw.

I was totally humbled by the courage of these two people.

Wish that I could be as courageous as them.

Argh!
