POSITRACTION: Katie Couric took a cut to save other's jobs

Celebrities
News Anchor Secretly Took $1Million Pay Cut to Save Dozens of Jobs
by McKinley Corbley - Aug 27, 20160

*** begin quote ***

Katie Couric, former news anchor for “CBS Evening News” took a $1 million pay cut in 2009 in order to save the jobs of other employees.

The story is only just now coming to light because of the Amazon best seller Powerhouse: The Untold Story of Hollywood’s Creative Artists Agency by James Andrew Miller – through a string of sources, Miller was told about how Couric met with CBS News president Sean McManus after only 3 years of working with the company to address rumors of the significant layoffs.

Couric proposed covering the necessary budget shortfall from her own salary, and only requested that there be “no public or private acknowledgement of the deed.”

Since the book was published on August 9th, the journalist has received widespread applause and admiration despite her modest wishes.

It’s no secret that I am “hard” on liberal media “celebrities” for their biased reporting.

In this case, I must “give the devil his due”.

That was a nice thing to do.

Given her low ratings caused the show to be cancelled, it was a hollow victory.

But kudos for the attempt.

JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973) on the Quad's "smoking" story

2016-Sep-04

Just submitted to the Quadrangle...

It's sitting "In Moderation" though.  Wanna bet on whether they'll publish it?  Or even allow the students to SEE it online?

McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973)

This includes marijuana smoking I assume?  After all, if the campus has the ability to enforce a rule against tobacco smoking, particularly in places like dorm rooms, it clearly has the ability (and legal obligation under state and federal law I believe) to enforce the law against marijuana smoking.  The College will not be able to claim that student drug use was beyond its control once it has admitted that it can and does indeed exercise the ability for such control.  It's quite possibly a dangerous can of legal  worms to open.

JFOUND: McCarra-Fitzpatrick MaryAnn (MC1989) calling all "associates"

2016-Sep-09

Attn: Mr. Edward Lampert
Chairman and CEO
Sears Home ServicesSears Holding Corporation
3333 Beverly Road
Hoffman Estates, IL 60179

Dear Mr. Lampert:

We have been attempting, since 31st August 2016, to get our Kenmore washing machine fixed.

On 31st August we were visited by technician 0003101 and were told that the repair would cost $770.00.
While we briefly considered purchasing a replacement washer, this became impractical when we were informed that our (still functioning) dryer would not be able to stack correctly upon a newer model dryer. At this point we decided upon repairing the machine.

When I called to make a subsequent appointment— presumably for the repair– I made it abundantly clear what the problem was.Still, when we were visited a second time, on 3rd September 2016, all technician 0819755 did was charge us $344.97.

Yesterday, when I called, I was told that the next available appointment was for 15th September.

So far, we have paid Sears $436.23 and I have an ever-growing pile of laundry that wants washing.

I have to wonder, if we had ordered a new washer and dryer, how eager Sears would be to arrange for their installation.

Please be advised that the delay in executing this repair will have an immediate effect on whether or not we ever purchase another Sears product, or, indeed, patronize any of your stores.

In the coming years we may likely decide to replace our range, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, and air conditioners. Do you think it likely, given the way this matter has been handled, that we will choose to purchase these units from Sears? I don’t think so.

In addition, you may rest assured that we will share this negative experience with our friends, associates, and relatives. They purchase appliances too.

I noted, in your listing in Hoover’s, that you have 40,000 employees. Is it possible that one of them might be available, today, to fix our washer?

Yours sincerely,
MaryAnn McCarra-Fitzpatrick

*** and ***

Richard Alexander

Alexander and his wife Anne are 24 year Roxbury residents. Their three daughters are products of the Roxbury school system.

Alexander is a product director for Asurion and holds a masters in finance along with a bachelor's degree in computer information systems and a minor in accounting. “I’m passionate about Roxbury and developing our children to the best of their ability. I’m proud of our educational and extra-curricular achievements as well as our infrastructure advancements and recognized fiscal accountability.”

Set It and Forget It: How Default Settings Rule the World
The many ways we act by default (without even knowing it).
by Lena Groeger ProPublica, July 27, 2016, 8 a.m.

*** begin quote ***

In the U.S. when you register for your driver’s license, you’re asked whether or not you’d like to be an organ donor. We operate on an opt-in basis: that is, the default is that you are not an organ donor. If you want to donate your organs, you need to actively check a box on the DMV questionnaire. Only about 40 percent of the population is signed up to be an organ donor.

In other countries such as Spain, Portugal and Austria, the default is that you’re an organ donor unless you explicitly choose not to be. And in many of those countries over 99 percent of the population is registered. A recent study found that countries with opt-out or “presumed consent” policies don’t just have more people who sign up to be donors, they also have consistently higher numbers of transplants.

*** end quote ***

I’m an organ donor only because I am trying to “sneak into” Heaven.

Seriously, if what I no longer have use for can help someone else, then why not.

Over and above that, I’m going to start looking at “my defaults”. They may be more important than any of my many faults.

Maybe I can remind you all to select recycling “your parts”?
