Technically, it is a sophisticated mechanical “calculator” rather than a true “computer”, since it cannot be reprogrammed, but nonetheless an impressive artefact. *** end quote *** So what happened in 500AD? Why didn’t it come back until 1180AD? How much real dikw (i.e., data, information, knowledge, wisdom) has been lost forever? And, will in the future there be another “Dark Age”? I find an interesting corollary in the modern “survivalist” community. They can’t figure out folks in the 1700’s and 1800’s did certain things. If such “modern history” is lost, then what else has been “forgotten”? I wonder how little we really know and understand even less. Argh! Guess we just have to “rediscover” it the hard way. Lyme CT. James (Jim) born July 1, 1924 was called to eternal life July 31, 2016, he was 92. Born in the Bronx, NY to Irish Immigrant parents, Michael and Margaret (nee Gallagher) Horris, Jim was the second of three children. His sister Ann Mariah and his brother Joseph have pre-deceased him. Jim, first generation American, was raised in Riverdale, NY belonged to St. Margaret's Parish and attended Cardinal Hayes High School '42. He enlisted in the Army in 1943. He was a Tech Sergeant in the 102nd Division (Ozarks) and fought in the European Theater during WWII. His unit was in France and Germany and was part of the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart. Also for duty, honor and courage Jim received the Bronze Star. After returning home Jim went to Manhattan College, Class of 1948, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. During this time he met his future wife, Virginia Yoli, through community projects at St. Margaret's Parish. They were married in 1949 and moved to Stuyvesant Town in NYC. Jim started his career in the NY Telephone Company as an installer and 42 years later retired as Vice President and General Manager. During that time Jim worked at may different levels and offices, always taking on the challenges of a growing company and succeeding in each position. He worked at 140 W Street for several years; was a member and became the Chairman of the National Convention of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also the Director of the Bell System Exhibit during the 1964-65 NY World's Fair. He headed up the committees for Junior Achievement, in the Summer Jobs Program. NY Telephone Co. was one of the leading companies to help young adults attain jobs, education and training. In 1955 Jim and Virginia moved their family out of NY to River Vale, NJ, where they belonged to Our Lady of Mercy parish. Their daughter and two sons attended the parish school. In 1969 Jim moved his family to Woodcliff Lake, Where they became actively involved in Our Lady Mother of the Church and the community. After retirement Jim joined VFW Post 8946 in Park Ridge and also belonged to the American Legion Post #78, Englewood where he was involved in the Post supported fundraisers and activities including The Wounded Warrior Program. On one occasion Jim travelled with other veterans to Walter Reed Hospital to visit and talk to wounded soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Jim said he was both proud and humbled by the experience of meeting these wounded veterans and their families. Jim Horris was devout in his faith, with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. He was a proud American, Patriot and Veteran fierce in his commitment to duty, honor and courage and to his country. He was devoted to his family, a die-hard Yankee fan, a staunch believer in the Constitution, a Republican and member of the NRA. Jim was predeceased by his wife Virginia, they were married for 56 years. He is survived by his three children, daughter Christine M. Janicek and sons; James A. Horris and Matthew J Horris and his wife Dianna. He was Grandpa to Rebecca, Jessica, Alexa and her husband William, Brenna, Jamie and his wife Kelly, Zachary and Hannah. I beg to differ. Even the official, establishment Church would tell you that you are free to vote for these candidates - as long as you are not doing so BECAUSE of their support for personal choice. You may disagree with that position but still vote for those candidates, because, for instance, you recognize what an unmitigated disaster the other candidates would be on any number of social justice, or even national security issues. And, in my opinion, few people are FOR abortion - they are simply for people (especially the woman whose body we are talking about) being able to make their own choice about a pregnancy - free of any government coercion. The suggestion that there be some public funding is only to insure that even the poor have access - if that is what they choose. In our courses at Manhattan we used “Moral Guidance” by Healey and abortion and same sex marriage was not kosher. We studied the Principle of double effect and that didn’t apply either. We were also taught to hate the sin and love the sinner. We were taught that to commit a mortal sin three things were required: 1) Serious Matter 2) Sufficient Reflection and 3) Full consent of the will. I at least believe we agree that abortion is a serious matter. I also believe that there are many oppressed, badly treated women, who simply didn’t have the energy for sufficient reflection and/or full consent of the will. In any event it is not for me to judge such situations. That is God’s job. It does not help that you tell others what you think without evidence that you have the qualifications in Moral Guidance etc. to give an opinion worth addressing. It is as bad as going out on the web and finding tidbits of data and then giving cardiologic opinion about a heart condition. Edward Howard, 95, of New Market died on August 8, 2016, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Mr. Howard had been a Loudonville resident until his wife Carole and he moved to New Market in 2007. Mr. Howard had been principal engineer in the New York State Department of Health. Following assignments in several field offices, he was district engineer in Glens Falls for several years. After a change in law gave the Department of Health comprehensive responsibility for hospitals and nursing homes in the state, Ed was transferred to the main office in Albany. As part of a task force, he helped develop the comprehensive program to carry out the law. Mr. Howard later became director of the Bureau of Hospital engineering. When Medicare required state inspections of hospitals and nursing homes, Ed qualified as an instructor at training courses at the University of New Hampshire and Tulane University. Later when New York required licensing of nursing home administrators, Mr. Howard was an instructor at training courses at Ithaca College and Cazenovia College. Born in Poughkeepsie, he had a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and a master's degree in public health from Columbia University. Ed was a licensed professional engineer, a life member of The National Society of Professional Engineers, American Public Health Association and American Water Works Association and before retiring, a diplomat of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. Mr. Howard was an Army veteran of World War II serving three years, including two years in the European theater and was an artillery technical sergeant. Participating in the invasion of France, Ed landed on Omaha Beach and was awarded campaign medals for Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Barbara Lent. Mr. Howard is survived by his wife, Carole of New Market; step-children Mark Olcott, DVM, and wife Molly, Kristin McGee and husband Sean, Karen Johnson and husband Mark, all of Urbana, Md., Gregory Olcott and wife Brigit of Leesburg, Va. and nine step-grandchildren; sisters, Jane Sheftie of Poughkeepsie, Marian Bon and husband Peter of Lewes, Del., Betty Thust of Millbrook, N.Y., nine nieces and nephews and 10 grandnieces and nephews. BARONE Posted Aug. 10, 2016 at 2:00 AM September 23, 1924 - August 8, 2016 Monroe, NY Andrew "Andy" Barone was born in the Bronx in 1924, born to the late Mary Milani and Henry Barone. He lived a remarkable 91 years. He served his country with courage and distinction. Andrew was a World War II Veteran and served with the 8th Air Force in England as a navigator on a B17, Flying Fortress with the 390th Bomb Group. Andrew flew six missions and although wounded in action, he recovered and returned to his bomb group and flew six more missions before the war ended in 1945. For his heroism, Andrew received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster. Many of his World War II navigation maps can be found in the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, AZ. After the war, Andrew continued his education graduating from Manhattan College in 1949 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Andrew loved the community of Monroe. He had moved from the big city - the Bronx - to Newburgh, to New Paltz and then finally landed in Monroe in 1962 where he raised his family. Andrew was the town and village engineer and building inspector for Monroe for 22 years and retired in 1984. He also served his community as a village trustee for seven years. Those who knew "Andy" knew he was a gentleman who was always very passionate on issues of Monroe's growth, infrastructure, water and the overall impact on the community. He would often share his expertise, knowledge, ideas, opinions and leadership with the community and via many "letters to the editor" in the Times Herald Record. After retirement from Monroe, he couldn't sit still and worked for a while as a part time project engineer for Stantec Consulting and then finally ended his long career as a Project Engineer with Dufresne-Henry Consulting Engineers in Newburgh. Andrew or "Mr. Barone" as some knew him, was also a quiet contributor to many of the construction projects for the Monroe community. As a member of the Usher Society at Sacred Heart Church he also served many years on their building and groups committee for the parish. He was also a charter member of the Rotary Club of Monroe. Andrew was also responsible for the design, supervision of construction engineering for the war memorial monument in Monroe. In May 2008, Andrew was also nominated for Orange County Citizen of the Year. Andrew was also lucky enough to participate in the Hudson Valley Honor Flight program, a remarkable group that honors our war veterans. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Dirikge Barone; his daughter, Nancy Barone Klahn and her husband, Jay, from Harriman, NY and their children: Nicole and Madison; his son, Andrew Barone and his wife, Robin from Newfoundland, PA and their children: Justine Barone Longland and her husband, Matt, Drew, Robert and Emily Barone; his daughter, Elaine Blazeski and her children: George Blazeski and his wife, Tori, William, and Christopher Blazeski from Nutley, NJ; and his great-grandson, Logan Barone. Andy was predeceased by his first wife, Adeline Dormi Barone and his son, Paul Barone. His family would like to thank the wonderful nurses of Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc., especially the angel they sent to us, Mary Clabough, as well as the remarkable team at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence of Newburgh. He grew up in Skaneateles and graduated from Skaneateles High School and Manhattan College, following in the footsteps of his father who graduated from Manhattan. He was an administrative staff analyst and the deputy director of human resources for the Department of Environmental Protection in New York City for many years where he was an avid theater-goer and an active counselor for AA where he served as a counselor and mentor for 26 years. He is survived by his mother, Mary P. Moody of Lancaster, PA, a long time resident of Skaneateles, his sister, Mary Ellen (Barry) Yates of Auburn, and three brothers, John Barry of Conifer, CO, Michael Barry of Floral Park, N.Y. and David Barry of Lancaster, PA. He is predeceased by his father, John J. Barr, who passed away in 1971. A funeral mass celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, at St. Mary’s Lake in Skaneateles, followed by a burial in St. Mary’s cemetery. Steven was an avid animal lover, so friends who wish to may contribute to the SPCA in his memory. JOBIT: Lynch, Edward Thomas [MC1955 RIP] on 2016-Aug-112016-Aug-13http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/newsobserver/obituary.aspx?n=Edward-Lynch&pid=181062285 Edward Lynch Obituary February 5, 1933-August 11, 2016 Raleigh Edward Thomas Lynch, 83, died suddenly at Duke Raleigh Hospital on August 11th. The entire Lynch family is grateful for a life well lived. Born in New Jersey, Edward attended Manhattan College and earned his MS degree in electrical engineering at Syracuse University. He worked at IBM for 36 years. Edward is survived by his wife Marion of 60 years; children Janet Niesel (Dave), William (Sally), Carol Burkey (Bill) and Daniel (Leslie); grandchildren Zoe, Nathan, Mary, Lucas, Justin, Victoria, Cameron, Ryan and Hannah. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society . A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday August 16th at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Raleigh. Because Americans seem to not know the difference anymore. This week brought news that the parents of a senior at Leon High School in Florida are threatening to sue the school if their daughter doesn’t make the varsity cheerleading squad. The school, which was state runner up in the non-tumbling division at the National High School Cheerleading Championship last year, has a very competitive team. When the young woman, whom the district has not yet identified, fell twice during her tryouts, the coaches decided she didn’t make the cut. Which is when her parents decided it was time to consult a lawyer. It’s not clear whether the parents have found a “right to be part of a human pyramid” in the US Constitution, but just the threat of litigation is enough to make even the most inefficient bureaucracy spring into action. And so the school district is reviewing the decision of the cheerleading judges. Contrast the actions of the cheerleading parents with those of 2-year-old Lane Graves, the toddler who died when he was attacked by an alligator while playing next to a pond at Disney World last month. The Nebraska family announced this week that they were not going to sue Disney for this tragedy. *** end quote *** How else does one correct a corporation’s bad behavior?
