POSITRACTION: Treat Cataracts Without Surgery

Researchers Develop ‘Holy Grail’ Eye Drop to Prevent, Treat Cataracts Without Surgery
by Good News Network - May 24, 2016

*** begin quote ***

For the millions of people whose vision is clouded by cataracts, surgery had been the only option, but in a few years we may be able to treat, and even prevent the debilitating condition with simple eyedrops.

Researchers at Louisiana State University have formulated drops made of nanoparticles that are able to efficiently deliver into the eye lens the natural substance called lutein–which is plentiful in youthful eyes, but diminishes in old age.

Professor Cristina Sabliov and assistant professor Carlos Astete in the LSU AgCenter Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering found a way to use nanoparticles to make the plant-based anti-oxidant more absorbent for humans.

*** end quote ***

We are given the tools to solve a lot of our problems.

How much more can be discovered?

Why don’t we focus on the real problems humanity has rather than the trivial stuff?

Because as a species, maybe we are just stupid.

RE: John F. Farina '78 BS

Good Afternoon All,

We pray for the repose of the soul of Fellow Jasper, John Farina. Pete Sweeney received the sad news yesterday from John's Brother, Tom '79 BS and we further received word from Brother Robert and Brother Tom Zoppo about the passing of this good man. Brother Tom Zoppo shared the following.

"I was sorry to hear about John Farina.  He and I entered the Skaneateles Novitiate together in 1980.  Prior to the novitiate, John taught at St. Peter's Boys High School for one year followed by a year at Christian Brothers Academy, Syracuse.  After the novitiate, John was assigned to Good Shepherd School in the Inwood section of Manhattan for a few years before leaving the Brothers.  After graduating from St. Raymond's Boys High School in the Bronx, where he first met the Brothers, John became a passionate biology student at Manhattan College.  John brought his special enthusiasm for all things related to plants and living creatures to the classroom."

Br. Tom Zoppo

John was called home suddenly and based upon the heartfelt comments shared by some who knew John, he will be missed by many and touched the hearts of many as he passed through their lives as Educator and Friend. We pray for John, his Brothers and their Family as the Family mourn the loss of their loved one. We remember John as he no doubt enters the Kingdom of heaven and is at rest in God's Eternal Embrace. Thank you Pete, Tom, Br. Robert and Br. Tom Zoppo.

Thank you. God Bless.

MALINA, Jr.,
Dr. Joseph F. Ph.D., P.E.
Aug. 24, 1935 - June 14, 2016

Joseph (Joe) Malina passed away peacefully on the afternoon of June 14, surrounded by his wife, children, their spouses and grandchildren. He lived a very full and accomplished life of almost 81 years devoted to his family, The University of Texas and his Catholic faith as an active member of the St. Austin Catholic Church community for over 50 years.

Joe was the second of nine children born in Brooklyn, New York on August 24th, 1935 to Joseph F. Malina Sr. and Mary Wesolowski Malina, both first-generation Americans born to Polish and Czechoslovakian immigrants.

Joe began his life-long dedication to his work and education early on, receiving a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering (Sanitary Engineering) at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He moved to Austin in 1961 and began his 53 year career at the University of Texas at the Cockrell School of Engineering. He officially retired in the fall of 2012, and continued to mentor and supervise students until the end of 2014.

Joe leaves a lasting legacy as an educational and industry leader, and a respected professional engineer in the field of wastewater treatment. During his more than half a century at UT Austin as an environmental and water resources engineering professor, he supervised 192 graduate students, including 26 PhD students and consulted with over 70 companies. Many of his graduate students have been instrumental in terms of design and operation of wastewater treatment plants throughout the world, and so have helped the environment and society. These accomplishments rightfully earned him high honors in his profession, including awards from the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, American Academy of Environmental Engineers, American Water Works Association, Water Environment Association of Texas, Water Environment Federation, American Society of Civil Engineers, and many others.

After moving to Austin, he met his wife Ida and they were married on January 9, 1965. They were blessed with 51 years of marriage and a life centered around children, family and faith.

ENDNOTE: Catholic Church spent $2M to block child-sex law reform

EXCLUSIVE: Catholic Church spent $2M on major N.Y. lobbying firms to block child-sex law reform
BY KENNETH LOVETTNEW YORK DAILY NEWS ALBANY BUREAU CHIEF
Monday, May 30, 2016, 9:16 PM

*** begin quote ***

All told, the conference spent more than $2.1 million on lobbying from 2007 through the end of 2015, state records show. That does not include the conference’s own internal lobbying team.

Filings show the lobbyists were retained, in part, to work on issues associated with “statute of limitations” and “timelines for commencing certain civil actions related to sex offenses.” Other issues included parochial school funding and investment tax credits.

*** end quote ***

I don’t know more than what is written in the article, but at the very least the “optics” are terrible.

How far has the Church “leadership” strayed from the ideal?

Argh!

I’m again speechless.
