POSITRACTION: Kidney Transplants From Any Donor?

New Procedure Allows Kidney Transplants From Any Donor
by Good News Network - Mar 12, 2016

*** begin quote ***

Tens of thousands of patients languish on the organ donor waiting lists–and may wait forever because their immune systems will reject any transplanted organ that is not a match.

Now, in a large national study that experts are calling revolutionary, the New York Times reports researchers have found a way to end the anguish using a new procedure.

“In the new study, published Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine, doctors successfully altered patients’ immune systems to allow them to accept kidneys from incompatible donors. Significantly more of those patients were still alive after eight years than patients who had remained on waiting lists or received a kidney transplanted from a deceased donor.”

What great news.

Hopefully, this can save a lot lives.

I’m speechless at the possibilities.

Young engineers in spotlight

*** begin quote ***

Two engineering graduate students from Manhattan College recently came back from a very unusual field trip: a visit to the Idaho National Laboratory.

But Eugene Heerschap and Olivia Mason didn’t just get a tour of the enormous federal complex, which houses the nation’s lead laboratory for nuclear energy research, among other research units. Last week, the students got the chance to present their research on ways to bring the global carbon footprint down and potentially revolutionize the petrochemical industry.

Mr. Heerschap and Ms. Mason, along with fellow graduate student Sebastian Garcia, have all been working with Manhattan College professor Gennaro Maffia and Anne Gaffney, a senior fellow at Idaho National Labs, researching how to make the petroleum refining process both environmentally and economically friendly.

MANHATTAN COLLEGE TO DEDICATE NEW CHAPEL WINDOWS DEPICTING LIFE OF JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE

The event takes place on campus on Thursday, April 7.

Manhattan College will officially dedicate a 20th century collection of stained glass windows depicting The Life and Work of Saint John Baptist de La Salle on Thursday, April 7.

The College will commemorate the completed installation with a Mass in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers at 9:30 a.m., followed by a dedication ceremony at 11:30 a.m., when the Manhattan College Singers will perform. A live stream of Thursday's dedication ceremony at 11:30am will be available on manhattan.edu.

Brother Gustavo Ramírez Barba, FSC, Ed.D., will receive an honorary doctorate of pedagogy degree at the event. Br. Gustavo is the General Councilor for Lasallian Higher Education at the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He is one of seven General Councilors who “have as their mission to strengthen communion and interdependence in the Institute.” He has served as the executive secretary for the Lasallian Latin American Region and as a regional director for the Mexican and Central American Universities of the International Association of Lasallian Universities.

The De La Salle windows were created in the early 1900s by the renowned French workshop of L. Mazuet et fils of Bayeux. L. Mazuet et fils was founded in 1858, and both father, Leon-Louis, and son, Henri, were students of the Christian Brothers in the late 1800s. Their work can be admired in the ancient churches and magnificent cathedrals of France, including Eglise Notre-Dame et Saint-Marcouf in Basse-Normandie.

The windows were originally installed at the Christian Brothers’ Novitiate in Pocantico Hills, New York, and were moved to the chapel of the Brothers’ Novitiate in Barrytown, New York in 1930. They were reacquired in 2015, through the joint effort of Manhattan College and the District of Eastern North America of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. After a yearlong process of restoration by Rohlf’s Stained and Leaded Glass Studio, they were installed in Manhattan College’s Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers in early 2016, and will be dedicated on the Feast Day of Saint John Baptist de La Salle.

JEMAIL: Flynn, Bro. Gregory (MC1957) reminds us about Addis Hope

2016-Apr-07

Hello John

It has been a while since I made personal contact but I hope this finds everything going well with you and fellow Jaspers.

When thinking of our Addis Hope children of street families and worrying about providing for them, I’m encouraged by a scriptural passage from the prophet Isaiah (49:15) “Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget I will never forget you.

With that in mind, I am attaching a photo of typical children in our Addis Hope program in the hope that you will not forget them. Our web site is www.addis-hopeethiopia.com Brother Timothy will pass on to me whatever check are written for our very deserving destitute children.

God bless and keep you,

Bro. Greg Flynn

MFACEBOOK: The case of the mysterious chair

Here's a mystery perhaps some alumni can help solve. About a year ago, friends of my wife found this rocking chair in an antique shop in northern lancaster county in Pennsylvania. Knowing we graduated from the college they bought it for us. How did it wind up in PA? Was it ordered by the college and used on campus or sold to student/alumni? I've attached a photo of the manufacturer, now out of business, and looks to be perhaps an inventory number.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri interim Chancellor Hank Foley and Commerce Bank Chairman Jim Schatz today awarded one of the 2016 William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence to Robert O’Connell, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering in the MU College of Engineering.

Foley, Schatz and a group of professors, administrators and staff surprised O’Connell by honoring him with the Fellowship, which includes a $10,000 check. Kemper Fellowships are awarded to five outstanding teachers at the University of Missouri each year.

This year is the 26th anniversary of the first William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence, which were established in 1991 with a $500,000 gift. Kemper, a 1926 MU graduate, was a well-known civic leader in Kansas City until his death in 1989. His 52-year career in banking included top positions at banks in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Commerce Bank manages the trust fund.

Robert O’Connell

Professor

Electrical and Computer Engineering Department
College of Engineering

MU Faculty Member Since 2005

In his years teaching at the University of Missouri, Robert O’Connell noticed that while administrative programs were in place to assist with student retention in the College of Engineering, little was done in the classroom to retain struggling students. This became his motivation for teaching and his commitment to engage struggling students and is what colleagues and students believe sets O’Connell apart.

O’Connell believes that by using student-centered active learning, or learning where an emphasis is placed on student discussion and hands-on examples, he can significantly impact engineering student retention.

“What I feel is most unique is that he pays extra attention to the students who struggle most,” said Chi-Ren Shyu, chairman of the electrical and computer engineering department. “Several successful, young alumni shared with me their stories about O’Connell’s influence and how they overcame turmoil because of his advising.”

Students regularly praise O’Connell for his commitment to students and their education. They say that his teaching style is easy to follow, he presents information clearly, and he is able to engage students without leaving any behind. As part of his goal to increase student engagement, O’Connell connects with students outside the classroom by involving them in his research through the undergraduate research program and by mentoring students who wish to study subjects not explicitly offered in the curriculum through the independent study program. Students say through his unique approach to teaching, he is able to take personal interest in every student’s learning and ensure that everyone is performing to the best of his or her abilities.

In addition to his attention to student success, he has been involved with various university programs and initiatives. O’Connell is co-founder of the MU Faculty Workshops Committee, faculty advisor for the MU chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) as well as an advisor for Eta Kappa Nu, an IEEE honor society. In addition, he established a summer-based study abroad program to help students develop global knowledge and skills.

As a testament to the success of his efforts, O’Connell has won the most teaching awards in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. He has won the department’s Outstanding Professor Award three times since 2012 and the College of Engineering Faculty Teaching Excellence Award three times since 2006.

“Dr. O’Connell exhibits the University of Missouri pillars of excellence, respect, discovery and responsibility in his teaching and service to our students,” says Miguel Ayllon, College of Engineering International Outreach Coordinator.

O’Connell earned a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan college and a master of science and doctorate from the University of Illinois.

ENDNOTE: Freedom at risk when our privacy is disregarded

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2016/03/why-you-need-to-be-very-concerned-about.html

SUNDAY, MARCH 27, 2016
Why You Need to Be Very Concerned About the War on CashLouis James, the editor of International Speculator, sat down with Doug Casey to discuss the ongoing “War on Cash.”

*** begin quote ***

It’s funny. First, there was a war on gold. Now, there is definitely a war on cash. It was inevitable. It’s part of a long-standing trend toward more state control of people’s finances. In modern times, this started back in 1970 with the so-called Bank Secrecy Act, which required U.S. persons to report the existence of any foreign bank or brokerage accounts. Of course, in those days, bank secrecy still existed, so many Americans simply violated the law.

*** end quote ***

Cash is the ultimate anonymous technology.

When “We, The Sheeple” have no financial privacy, then they have no freedom.

"If you give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest of men, I will find something in them which will hang him." —Cardinal Richelieu

I’d suggest that it just might be six ATM transactions.

EZPASS is their tracking mechanism. Banking privacy allows Big Brother to monitor every single thing that we do.

People in glass houses … …

And, should you get out of line, how will you survive without any money or ability to access your funds?

Argh!
