Ten-year-old Kiera Larsen died Monday while saving the lives of two toddlers from an out-of-control SUV that was barreling down on them.
A 1999 Mercedes parked on a sloping driveway near where the girl and toddlers were playing somehow went into neutral and took off backwards down the slope.
Kiera’s stepmom had run inside for just a second to grab a car charger. Kiera risked her life pushing the toddlers out of the way but was hit by the SUV and later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Isn’t that the essence of being “human”?
Yet we allow the killing of innocent “fetuses” every day.
I always rant about the Willie Crowther game Colossal Cave Adventure which taught me a profound lesson … if you kill the bird at step 3, then you never get past the snake at step 10. Now that may sound silly and trivial to you, but I applied that to abortion and human life.
Imagine that “we” have aborted the child who would grown up to cure cancer, solve time travel, compose beautiful music, or just be a good person. You can even follow the SciFi lines about what that child’s children could produce.
Do you wonder what this little girl might have become?

MOBIT: Horn, William J. 'Bill' (MC1964) reports the passing of Dr. Albert J. Hamilton on 2016-Feb-16
2016-Mar-13I have to report the sad news that Dr. Albert J. Hamilton, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences from 1980 to 1990, died from a massive heart attack at his Fort Lauderdale, Florida home on Tuesday, February 16. Death came suddenly in the midst of preparations for an extended trip to Australia and New Zealand.
At Manhattan, Al was an extraordinary colleague and leader for the Arts and Sciences and highly regarded by faculty, students and administrators. We worked together on many projects for the School of Arts and Sciences and the College and became close friends over the years.
Following his time at Manhattan Al moved on to Salem State in Massachusetts from which he retired as Provost. Prior to Manhattan he served at the University of Notre Dame from which he received his PhD in history and at St. Peter's College.
In retirement he volunteered with many community organizations in Fort Lauderdale, including the Broward Arts Center He will be sorely missed by his partner Martin H. Kaplan, four children, grandchildren and many, many friends.

Obituary
Albert J. Hamilton of Fort Lauderdale passed away suddenly in his home February 16, 2016.
He was 75, having been born August 24, 1940 in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late Hilary and Sarah Hamilton.
He is survived by his long-time partner, Martin Kaplan, daughter Sarah (John) Magill, son Brian (Suzanne) Hamilton, daughter Christine (Richard) Turner, and son Patrick (Stephanie) Hamilton, twelve grandchildren, and many close friends.
Al spent his professional life in higher education, as a history professor, then dean and ultimately academic vice president at colleges in the Midwest and Northeast. His published work includes the book, The Catholic Journey Through Ohio. Al earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Notre Dame.
Upon retirement, Al moved to Fort Lauderdale where he engaged in several volunteer efforts, including ushering at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; relished hosting parties, as well as being a guest; and read on a wide array subjects, but preferred mysteries.

Christopher E. Motlenski of Aquebogue died March 7, 2016 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was 53 years old.
He was born in Bethpage to Edward and Ann Mary (Fontanelli) Motlenski on September 4, 1962.
He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and worked for Oracle in sales.
He married Cathleen Loughren on Aug. 28, 1993 in Greenlawn.
Predeceased by his father, he is survived by his mother of Deer Park, his wife Cathy, his sons, Nicholas and Christopher and his daughter Kathryn.
The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 18 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home, 336 Marcy Avenue, Riverhead. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:15 on Saturday, March 19 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue

of Hanover, NH, formerly of Riverdale, NY, died peacefully at age 95 on March 14.
Predeceased in 2014 by his wife Carolyn Kupferberg Sapir, he is survived by his loving family, including two daughters, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A graduate of CCNY and Columbia (MA, Economics), Mr. Sapir was a securities analyst, until recently as First VP at Oppenheimer & Co in New York. He served as Chair, New York Society for Ethical Culture, and as board member of the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Riverdale Mental Health Association, and Weis Ecology Center. He was also an Adjunct Professor at Manhattan College School of Business.

John P. Skahill Financial professional in insurance industry, saw the national parks in retirement, 87
John P. "Jack" Skahill, 87, of Belmar, N.J., passed away peacefully on March 16, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, N.J.
Visitation is Friday, March 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reilly Bonner Funeral Home, 801 D St., Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Saint Rose Church, 603 7th Ave., Belmar. Committal will follow at St. Anne's Cemetery, Wall Township, N.J.
Jack had a lengthy career as an accountant in the insurance industry. He worked for the New York Life Insurance Co. and American Eagle Life Insurance Co. in Manhattan and finally spent many successful years at the Crum and Forster Insurance Co. in Morristown, N.J.
After retirement, Jack loved to travel and explore the national parks in the western U.S. with his loving wife, Catherine. He was an avid N.Y. Yankees and Notre Dame fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family on the beach in Belmar, meeting his future bride Catherine (Kay) in Manasquan, N.J., many decades ago.
He proudly served his country in the Army stateside during the Korean War.
Jack was born and raised in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, N.Y., graduating from Cardinal Hayes High School and Manhattan College. Jack and Kay settled in Roselle and eventually in Mendham, N.J., where they raised their family.
Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife, Catherine. He is survived by his five children and their spouses, Patricia M. Ferko and her husband, Scott, of Marysville, Ohio; Kathleen A. Ingram and her husband, William, of Johnstown, Pa.; James M. Skahill and his wife, Linda, of Saint John, U.S. Virgin Islands; Joseph E. Skahill and his wife, Patricia, of Garden City, N.Y., and Mary B. Roche and her husband, Robert, of Newtown, Pa. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org would be greatly appreciated.

Most Muslims and Christians, like most nonsmokers, are not extremists seeking to impose their lifestyle and beliefs on everyone around them. It's the extremists, the ones who demand that there be no smoking outdoors, in apartment buildings, or in isolated pubs; those who demand non-sectarian markets carry no pork products; or those who demand businesses close on "The Lord's Day" or that pubs not serve meat on Fridays, who create the problems for our society.
While the Christians have generally moved toward being far more tolerant of sectarian practices regarding Sundays and Fridays and religious holidays, what will happen if creeping extremism brings radical Antismokers and extremist Muslims together in projects like banning the advertising and the sight of tobacco and pork products from public view and equate the merest scent or barely measurable technical detection of sub-microscopic exposures to chemical trace elements of tobacco or pork in outdoor or apartment building settings to "being forced to smoke (or eat, or ingest in any form)" the products of their fanatical anathema? Will we see the frying of bacon banned from anyone who can't afford to live in an isolated mansion? Will flat dwellers be told "Pork products may only be cooked by being immersed in boiling water!" Will employees who handle tobacco products be pronounced "unclean" until they've gone through pseudo-religious-based cleansings and ablutions?
Both groups, extremist religious fanatics and extremist antismoking fanatics, seem to never be at peace with any existence whatsoever of their hated targets, and both groups have become more powerful as they've learned to use societal tools and media tricks to advance their positions and their goals. And both groups need to be opposed by those who believe in individual rights of choice in choosing how to live one's own life and form one's own societal standards without undue influence and duress from extreme minorities seeking to impose their own lifestyles and standards on everyone around them based upon the slimmest and flimsiest claims of being offended.
Mainstream Muslims and mainstream nonsmokers are seeing their hookah cafes and their pubs closed by the extremists who insist theirs is the only path to heaven and health. Mainstream smokers are already being thrown out of their housing if they refuse to conform in their homes, and mainstream lovers of fried bacon and grilled pork patties may not be far behind. People who believe in individual rights and freedoms, the mainstream, normal, tolerant members of both groups, need to make their voices heard and draw the lines at reasonable levels of respect for the rights of others not to be unduly forced to extreme exposures to things that might distress them, but not to cross over into unreasonable imposition of lifestyle rules that cross such reasonable boundaries. Extremist Antismokers and extremist religious fanatics should be told, in no short terms, to stuff it and learn tolerance for the beliefs and decisions of those who they live with.
