When other riders on the train moved away from a man in mental distress, a 70-year-old woman took his hand.
The random act of kindness by the older woman was enough to calm the young man who had been cursing and moving erratically.
Ehab Taha, a passenger on the Vancouver, British Columbia Skytrain at the time, snapped a photo and posted it on Facebook. He said the man sat with the woman who tightly gripped his hand until he started to cry.
The woman’s actions not only calmed the fitful young man, but also reassured the train’s other passengers.
“I’m a mother and he needed someone to touch,” the unidentified woman told Taha before starting to cry herself.

Edward J. Byrnes, age 86 of Kingston passed away Friday February 19, 2016. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Harriman. Edward was a graduate of Manhattan College and later received his MBA. He retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.
Preceded in death by his wife Marianne Byrnes. Survivors include: son Edward W. Byrnes of Sevierville; daughter and son in law Susan and Alan McGeorge of Pomona, NY; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.
Requiem Mass 11:00 am Monday February 22, 2016 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Father Michael Sweeney officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Haverstraw, New York. McCABE, Sr., John S. John (Jack) Scott McCabe, Sr., PE died on February 19, 2016 in Alpharetta Georgia.
He was born in 1928 to John Patrick and Marie McCabe of Queens NY. He honorably served in the US Navy and graduated from Manhattan College of NY in Civil Engineering with a Bachelors and a Masters of Civil Engineering from New York University. He worked as a professional engineer for his entire career; if you have healthy drinking water you can thank people like Jack.
Jack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dolly, and four children, John, Mary Beth, Ellen and Joseph along with their spouses and seven grandchildren.

I'm currently playing a computer role-playing game titled FALLOUT 4. It's a weirdly atmospheric post-nuclear-holocaust game premised on a kind of a 1940s' view of what a 1960s' civilization might look like when/after it got hit with a nuclear war.
Soooo.... as part of communicating that atmosphere they have a pirate radio station set up in the game with a strange DJ and a song selection of fifty or so actual songs that were popular in the 1930s through 1950s about nuclear holocausts and social things. One of the songs is about a "Pistol Packin' Mama" which your note brings to mind....
- MJM, who's had a hard time accepting the fact that people actually recorded and sang FUNNY songs about nuclear wars in the 1950s! Sheeesh!

East Lyme - George "Guy" H. Schiller died peacefully on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at Lawrence +Memorial Hospital with his loving family gathered around him.
Guy was born in New York City on Oct. 28, 1936, the son of George A. Schiller and Loretta (Hendrick) Schiller. After moving to New Rochelle, N.Y., in 1938, Guy attended Holy Family Grammar School, Archbishop Stepinac High School, and Manhattan College where in 1958, he received a bachelor of electrical engineering degree. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Upon graduation from Manhattan, Guy started working for AT&T in White Plains, N.Y., in their management development program.
On June 20, 1959, he married his best friend and soulmate, Lucine M. Suarez, at Holy Family Church in New Rochelle.
Along with his wife, Lucine, he leaves behind six children and nine grandchildren, son, Guy and his wife, Carol, of Niantic and their children, Jillian and Joseph; daughters, Kathryn Steglitz of Trumbull and her daughter, Samantha, and Joanne Fasciolo and her husband, Adam, of Norwalk and their children, Alex and Emma; sons, Roy of Oneonta, N.Y.; Mark and his wife, Kathleen, of Frederick, Md. and their children, Griffin and Kristin; and Paul and his wife, Jeanne, of Mohegan Lake, N.Y. and their sons, Jack and Brian. He also leaves a sister, Dorothy Kelly and her husband, Tom, their children and his cousins.
His son-in-law, Andrew, husband of Kathryn, predeceased him.
During his 40 year career with AT&T, Guy had multiple assignments in sales, engineering, human resources and operations in Philadelphia, Wayne and Harrisburg, Pa., New York City and White Plains, N.Y., and New Haven. He attended graduate courses at RPI in Troy, N.Y., and The Summer School of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey. While in engineering, he worked in Bell Labs on the initial broad band transcontinental network for high speed transmission of data on the testing of the Titan missile. After becoming district outside plant engineer for the Northeast area, he was responsible for all new cable installations including the shore landing of the trans-Atlantic cable at Greenhill, R.I.
Upon taking over the district manager's job for human resources in the region, he initiated programs that led to their first Employee Assistance Program. It was during this time that he attended Iona College and received a master of science degree in pastoral counseling and was awarded the Brother Mark Egan Memorial Medal for being the most outstanding student in the graduating class. During his tenure in the human resource position, he developed seminars to help employees deal with change. The most widely given program was ADAPT, aimed at helping those who were dealing with change over which they had no control. In addition, he developed an educational seminar on the disease of alcoholism which was also pivotal in the change of many lives.
During the last 10 years of his career Guy was the operations manager for Connecticut, Rhode Island, and central Massachusetts. While in this assignment, he oversaw the conversion to the digital age of a number of switching machines in New Haven, Cheshire, Worchester, Bridgeport, and White Plains. He was the project manager for the engineering and installation of the digital radio system to Fishers Island, N.Y. from New London.
Guy was a lifelong Catholic and certified catechist. He was the co-founder of the folk group BASIC (Brothers and Sisters in Christ) which was devoted to spreading the gospel through music, not only at Holy Name of Jesus parish in New York but at ecumenical services as well. As an active member of the Cursillo movement since 1965, he served on numerous teams and was a member of its leadership group for many years. In addition, he served on teams for Teens Encounter Christ and Residents Encounter Christ, a retreat for prison inmates. Always involved in parish life, he was an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Holy Name of Jesus in Valhalla, N.Y. and at St. Matthias in East Lyme. He also prepared teens for the reception of the sacrament of confirmation in both parishes. In recent years, he facilitated the adult bible study at St. Matthias and at York Correctional Institution. He was a member of the board of directors of St. Vincent De Paul Place, serving as vice president. He chaired the building committee for St. Matthias Church and for Our Lady of the Assumption Chapel at St. Edmund's Retreat on Enders Island. Guy served on the Attawan Beach Association Board of Governors as vice president and was president during the association's 50th anniversary celebration.
Guy enjoyed woodworking and carving, golf, fishing, playing the guitar, and reading. He took special delight in making things for his children and grandchildren such as cradles, furniture and toys. He made pieces of furniture for St. Matthias and St. Edmund's, most notably the confessional screen at St. Edmund's, their processional cross and the credence table at St. Matthias.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Francis Mirecki, Dr. Stephen Lattanzi, Dr. Mihkel Haus and the team of nephrologists from Southeastern Nephrology Associates and the DaVita Dialysis Center. The family is extremely grateful to Dawn McDermott, RN and Marya Ursin of Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, and to the marvelous RNs in the ICU at L+M, not only for their expert care of Guy, but for their ministrations to the family. The family especially thanks Dr. Donald Felitto who shepherded Guy and his family with professional acumen, grace filled care and tender compassion.
Arrangements are by the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home in Niantic.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, at St. Matthias Church, 317 Chesterfield Road, East Lyme, followed by Mass at 11 a.m.

"My sister went back to her old gym on Saturday. Her instructor put together a little program for her. She was so excited and is really motivated to getting her strength back. My family had a meeting at the National Rehabilitation Clinic today to get an update on Dianes progress. She is doing really and they are very happy with her progress.
This is an update that the gym instructor posted on his gym’s facebook page…its encouraging!
“Today was a great day at AlloverFitness. Started off with a super packed circuit at 10am then 3 of the guys from South Dublin South Dublin Kettlebell Club had 8 minutes tests ahead of national championships next weekend of all did really well.
As great as all that was the highlight of my day was this woman Diane Marley walking through the doors of AlloverFitness after 6 months. On the 11th of September last Diane suffered a serious brain trauma injury so serious she was given last rights by the Hospital priest that night, but look at this after 5 head operations later and 6 months in hospital you see her here. In this time she had shown unbelievable courage bravery and determination to live and what's more mad eager to get back training so today we started off with some Mobility Drills light lunges and a small amount of work on the suspension trainer so were going to continue with this work and get Diane back to were she was 6 months ago so to you Diane Marley I take my hat off to you,you are an absolute inspiration to us all and I look forward to seeing you again next week. Damien.”

Children and Families First announced Laura C. Rimmer is the new development and grants coordinator for Sussex and Kent counties. Based in CFF’s Georgetown office, Rimmer will be responsible for expanding funding opportunities and outreach partnerships throughout lower Delaware.
A graduate of Manhattan College with a bachelor of arts in psychology and government, and of Rutgers University with a master's in social work, Rimmer brings a fresh perspective and extensive background in nonprofit marketing, development fundraising and social work to the position.
“Children and Families First has grown through the years to meet the needs of kids facing adversity throughout Delaware, and we knew we needed a professional with experience and a unique skill set to increase our outreach in Kent and Sussex counties,” said CFF Director of Development Elizabeth Dougherty. “We are excited to have Laura join our team. She’ll be working with our Southern Development Committee and local organizations to build relationships, and increase local awareness and support for CFF programs.”
Rimmer and the Southern Development Committee have already started work on their first joint event. Fish On Seafood Grill’s inaugural guest bartender night is set for 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 10. The event aims to raise awareness and support in a fun, casual, social atmosphere with 18 local personalities pouring drinks as guest bartenders in a friendly competition to raise tips.
“Knowing that this agency annually impacts the lives of more than 40,000 infants, children, teens and parents is amazing to me as a licensed social worker,” Rimmer said. “I am thrilled to be a part of Children and Families First, and welcome the opportunity pair my clinical knowledge with my development background to keep improving our outreach in Kent and Sussex counties.”

I was struck yesterday by seeing two JASPERS in the papers:In the NY Daily News carried a piece on the law suit resulting fromthe Bronx fire in 2005 where 6 firefighters were either injured orkilled. One of those who died was firefighter John Bellew, Class of 1989 (R.I.P.). A total of $183 Million was award by a Jury to 5 of the 6 men.
On a happier note, the NY Times had a piece on an interview with Chief Justice Roberts by the Dean of the New England Law School, John F. Good News All,
Kathleen has shared this very good news. Jim is home, happy to be home and waiting to start Outpatient Rehab at Burke after a week or so of Home Physical Therapy. Their Daughter Sheila has been with them and that has been a big help. The best news is that Jim continues to improve. Getting through the operation and now being at home will have that effect upon you. God Bless you Jim.

Edward J. McEneney’s mission is to help people figure out how to connect themselves to work. He is a fountain of optimism for those in need of support and guidance. One of Friedman’s most disastrous deeds was the important role he proudly played, during World War II in the Treasury Department, in foisting upon the suffering American public the system of the withholding tax. Before World War II, when income tax rates were far lower than now, there was no withholding system; everyone paid his annual bill in one lump sum, on March 15. It is obvious that under this system, the Internal Revenue Service could never hope to extract the entire annual sum, at current confiscatory rates, from the mass of the working population. The whole ghastly system would have happily broken down long before this. Only the Friedmanite withholding tax has permitted the government to use every employer as an unpaid tax collector, extracting the tax quietly and silently from each paycheck. In many ways, we have Milton Friedman to thank for the present monster Leviathan State in America.

I’ve been enamored with two concepts: (1) end withholding and require people to write BIG checks for taxes, and (2) make “election day” the day after “tax payment day”.
Not like this will EVER happen. It’d GUARANTEE a revolution.
Our freedoms are taken away the same way that one eats baloney. One slice at a time.
So too, I think we regain them “one slice at a time”.
“We, The Sheeple” need to demand a “penny on the dollar” cut to every item in the Gooferment’s budget.
Surely, every bureaucrat can cut 1%. What don’t they? Because “We, The Sheeple” don’t demand it.
