POSITRACTION: Social media does a mitzvah for a four-year-old girl in India with a tumour

Renu's tumour had been growing since birth out the back of her head
But her hard up parents couldn't afford the medical bill to have it removed
Renu, of Uttar Pradesh, finally operated on after a social media campaign
Doctor warned without surgery the tumour would have eventually ruptured

Renu's father Jhinkant told MailOnline: 'I don't know what social media is and how it works But one thing I know it that it helped save my child's life. I don't know the man who put up a plea to help Renu. This act of compassion and benevolence has restored my faith in humanity. God bless them all.'

This is what we need more of and less Kardashians on social media.

As the human race, “we” need to figure out how to end such poverty.

And, no, it’s not more global Gooferment and higher taxes.

“We” need to spread free markets, education, and a “we are the world” spirit.

Argh!

But in this case, social media changed one life and I hope a lot of minds.

Dear Donor Partners and Friends of Addis Hope,

My Lasallian partner, Ruth Girmay, staff and children of Addis Hope send you our heartfelt greetings.

Knowing the sad plight of so many refugee children today, our children from street families could have suffered a similar fate were it not for your generous assistance which has made all the difference in their lives.

The attached photos of our January 7th Christmas party is one small indication of that difference.

Kendall O'Connor

Hello,

My name is Kendall O'Connor and I am originally from the Greater Boston Area and currently live in the Bronx. My idea career would be to do market research for an animation company like pixar or DreamWorks. I love market research because I think people are fascinating and I want to human behavior. Market research is an interesting and practical outlet for my interest in psychology. I joined this internship to learn more about market research. Currently, I am a student at Manhattan College and I have a major in marketing and a minor in psychology.

My most important accomplishment was Junior year in high school I won an award at my dance studio. I danced My entire life and loved it, there was an award that went out to the person who had the best attitude and worked the hardest. I was so honored when I won it because I worked so hard at dance my entire life, I was so happy that my hard work was recognized.

My two favorite stations on pandora are "60, 70s, and 80s hits" and "classic indie". I listen to a lot of classic rock like the Beatles, Billie Joel, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, CCR, etc. I also listen to a lot of indie music like Iron and Wine, City and Colours, The Fratellis, The Kooks, etc. Also, I am constantly listening to musicals. You will always catch me signing Les Miserables, Evita, Next to Normal, etc.

My three favorite movies are Breakfast at Tiffany's, The King's Speech, Sound of Music, and Good Will Hunting. I can watch those movies over and over again and never get bored.

This year, I hope I get back into reading. I will read a couple books over the summer and I used to read all the time when I was little, but I stopped making time for reading and I am going to make time to read a couple good books.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) updates on Jim

2016-Feb-03

Good Morning All,

Jim Smith's operation was done last Friday. It was not a simple procedure and a follow up Pacemaker implant may be necessary but all went well. Jim has been up for several hours at a time each day. Kathleen and their daughters have been with Jim and he is doing well particularly considering the procedure. A couple of Jaspers have visited but not stayed long and that is a good thing as Jim heals. Rehab is being set up and will hopefully be near home. Today the decision will be made as to the Pacemaker. Thanks to one of our Alumni Board members and a dear friend, a visit to Jim by her Sister, a truly gracious and capable professional, a Nurse of some repute, she was able to visit with Jim on behalf of all of us. Thank you so much Susan. Please keep the volume up for Jim. You cannot keep a good man down and in my heart Jim is one of the best, itching to get going again. We pray for his continued and complete recovery. We his friends are grateful to you for your prayers. His family thanks each of you for your prayers and good thoughts. Thank you. God Bless. I will keep you posted.

NEW YORK, NY (PRWEB) FEBRUARY 04, 2016

Tannenbaum Helpern is proud to announce that Festival of Song USA named Maryann Stallone, a partner in the firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice, “Woman of the Year” at its 21st annual gala on January 31st.

Drawing hundreds of attendees to its annual event, Festival of Song USA keeps the arts and the Italian culture alive through music, dance, and food and collaborates with the Cantamare Festival in Sicily, Italy to promote the arts and Italian culture and tradition across two continents. Its “Woman of the Year” award recognizes an individual’s drive to succeed, contribution to the community and accomplishments in their profession. This year’s event was in memoriam of its founder Silvana Romania.

Born to two immigrants from Italy, Maryann is the first in her family to graduate from college and law school. In 2007, Maryann graduated from Brooklyn Law School, where she was a Primary Article and Symposia Editor of the Journal of Law & Policy and served as Secretary of the Italian American Law Students Association (IALSA). In her last year of law school, Maryann had her first child just weeks before her final exams and a few months before the bar exam. One of her proudest moments was walking on stage to receive her Juris Doctorate degree with her daughter in her arms.

As a commercial litigator, Maryann advises clients on complex business disputes and has handled cases involving securities fraud, breach of contract, business torts, employment discrimination, intellectual property infringement, and professional malpractice. She has represented clients in the hedge fund, private equity, REIT, law firm, accounting, dental, real estate, media and staffing industries. Selected as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers for 2014 and 2015 and as one of the Top Women Attorneys in Metro New York Rising Stars for 2014, Maryann is actively involved in Tannenbaum Helpern’s Women’s Initiative and co-authors the Attorney Professionalism Forum in the New York State Bar Association Journal.

A proud mother of three, Maryann is fluent in Italian and takes great pride in her Italian heritage, roots and culture.

JOBIT: Dersh, Rhoda Eisman [MC1980 RIP] on 2016-Feb-01

2016-Feb-05

Rhoda Eisman Dersh
Obituary

Rhoda Eisman Dersh, prominent Berks County civic leader, founder and longtime President and CEO of the Reading educational landmark Pace Institute, businesswoman, philanthropist and artist, passed away on the morning of February 1st in Boca Raton, Florida, at the age of 81, surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jerome Dersh, M.D., retired Reading ophthalmologist, two adult children, Debra and Jeff Dersh, and her grandson, Jeremy.

Mrs. Dersh was born in Philadelphia in 1934, the daughter of Kay and Maurice Eisman.

She was accomplished from an early stage in her life, earning a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955, a M.A. in International Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 1956 and an M.B.A. from Manhattan College in 1980.

Her early professional activities were varied, ranging from serving as an interpreter for the Consul of Chile, to staff or faculty positions at Albright College, Mount Holyoke College and Amherst College.

She settled in the Berks County area in 1960 when her husband joined an area ophthalmology practice, beginning a lifelong endeavor as perhaps the first local woman civic leader.

She was a founding member of several important organizations including The World Affairs Council of Reading and Berks County, the Citizens Active for Reading Education (CARE), and the Visiting Homemaker Service.

Mrs. Dersh also took on board and other leadership roles in the United Way, the League of Women Voters, the Berks County and Pennsylvania chambers of commerce, the Family Guidance Center, Leadership Berks and the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools. She was appointed a delegate to the White House Conference on Children and Youth, and was the first woman invited to join the board of the Rotary Club of Reading.

Her interests in education and business became more important over the course of her professional life. Concerned about local educational policies, she wrote a book titled "The School Budget: It's Your Money, It's Your Business," which was adopted as a textbook at several universities. And she established a management training and consulting firm, Professional Practice Management Associates, which specialized in hospital and medical office management and training.

Her work in this area prompted local business leaders to ask for her help with the growing population of workers displaced from downsizing and closing businesses, leading her to establish Pace Institute in 1981, a private licensed career school that grew to offer diplomas, certificates and specialized associate degrees in 29 programs.

She was also recognized as the Entrepreneur of the Year by the Berks County Chamber of Commerce in 1985. She remained president and CEO of Pace Institute until her retirement in 2013.

Other endeavors included a lifelong interest in African art, eventually leading her to establish a collection, some of which has been gifted to the Reading Public Museum and the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and in collaboration with her husband, an important collection of contemporary post-war artwork. She was a longtime supporter of the arts more generally, and an accomplished artist herself, starting as a weaver in the 1970s and more recently creating jewelry pieces that have been exhibited at the Reading Public Museum, the Goggleworks Center for the Arts and the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

Her family is holding private services and asks for any donations in her name to be made to the Reading Public Museum or the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts.

Ep. 20 Government Water Supply Is Contaminated? Don’t Blame Government, Urges Krugman
29 January 2016     |     Tom Woods

There’s no transcript; so you’ll have to listen to it.

Krugman claims that it’s not the Gooferment’s fault — not the Democratic mayor, maybe more the Republican governor, definitely not the Federal regulatory agencies, and certainly not the BHO44 administration.

Me thinks he (Krugman) protests too much!

While there is enough blame to go around, one has to focus on the iterations of poor local political management of financial affairs. As usual, generous Gooferment pensions and profligate spending by the Democratic machine have put this “city” in a hole that it’s unlikely to EVER get out of.

And, that becomes the fault primarily of the Republican governor who tried to sort of buy some time to get a good fix.

Argh!

Now I have no great love for any particular political “party” in this day and age, but I continue to be amazed at the Liberal Left’s ability to blame all manner of “disaster” on their opponents.

Listen to them demolish Krugman’s excuse party.

Thirty minutes well spent.
