POSITRACTION: Where is "joke.crab.arch"?

Mapping the world, three words at a time
By David Post January 12

*** begin quote ***

Here’s the problem: hundreds of millions, and more likely several billion, of the world’s people live in a world in which few or none of the places that are important in their lives — where they live, where they work, where they catch the bus, where their kids go to school, where they go for a drink or to watch the movies — has an “address,” a unique and commonly understood designator indicating their actual physical location. Think of just the inhabitants of the slums and favelas in and around the great world mega-cities — Sao Paolo, Brazil; Mexico City; Shanghai; Istanbul; Mumbai; Jakarta, Indonesia … and multiply that many times over.

And think of what it would be like to live in a world without addresses and how difficult (or impossible) it would be to get utility service or request an ambulance or report a crime or obtain public services or get a product delivered or start a business or open a school or call a meeting of your neighbors or find the voting booth you’re supposed to go to … without the ability to refer to precisely where any of that is supposed to happen.

Of course, it’s true that any point on the Earth’s surface can be identified uniquely by its latitude and longitude — at least if you include enough significant digits to make the reference sufficiently precise — and there are lots of places on the Internet where you can convert latitude and longitude parameters into specific locations (and vice versa) (such as the GPS Coordinate Tracker). Monticello, for instance, is at 38.0086043 North latitude and 78.45319940000002 West longitude; and if I ask you to meet me at 34.1016357 North and 118.3266744 West, we’ll end up right at the corner of Hollywood and Vine.

But long strings of digits are very difficult to remember and to use when communicating with others. It is as difficult to imagine a usable universal location scheme that requires people to talk to one another in latitude and longitude references as it is to imagine the Internet becoming the Internet without the domain name system, which eliminates the need to refer to the unique number — the hexadecimal “IP Address” (e.g., 192.33.31.56 for washingtonpost.com) — assigned to every website or other Internet location.

A London start-up, What3Words, has come up with what looks, to me, like it could be a truly transformative resolution to the problem.

*** end quote ***

It will be immediately useful when Amazon, Google, FedEx, UPS, Uber, and etc etc get on board.

Maybe even the USPS and the Gooferment might catch up to lead the parade.

When I first moved to Virginia, continuous roads would change names with no warning. Or numbers would just reset at the city or county line.

And, let’s not forget how many Broadways, Second Streets, or such we have.

This seem like a simple way to pinpoint anywhere in the globe.

So maybe I’ll see you at “joke.crab.arch”. Funny how once you hear it, it’s funny and memorable.

Denis Edward LaSota
Obituary
AGE: 74 • Kennett Square, PA

Denis LaSota died on January 10 at the Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington, DE where he was in the care of his wife and daughters and a wonderful staff. He was diagnosed with cancer on December 15 while in Fort Myers, FL and flew home two days later to be among family and friends.

Denis was born in Yonkers, NY on April 26, 1941 to Edward LaSota and Helen Prentki LaSota. He attended St. Casimir grade school and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers. In 1962, he graduated from Manhattan College with a BS in chemistry. He went to work in the NY State Department of Health but soon was hired by Hercules, Inc. to work in Kenvil, NJ. In 1964, he married Barbara Galadja LaSota, his love until her death in 1997.

Denis's career with Hercules took him from Kenvil, NJ to Hopewell, VA, where he earned an MBA from the University of Richmond, to Wilmington, DE, then to Atlanta, GA, and back to Wilmington, where he retired from the company in 1996. He then worked for five years as a consultant in the food chemicals business.

Denis married Jane Holloway in 1998 after considerable match making on the part of mutual friends, and they made every effort to live life to its fullest over the next 17 and a half years. Hiking trips in the National Parks of the United States were their favorite vacations along with time spent in Pelican Preserve in Fort Myers, FL. In addition to their vacations in the National Parks, they made a point of getting to every location on their "bucket list." Denis had a lifelong passion for golf which he learned by caddying as a young boy. He loved playing with his golf friends at Hercules Country Club, Wilmington Country Club and Pelican Preserve Golf Club. Denis enjoyed geography, astronomy, many genres of music, bird watching, nature walks, sunrises, sunsets, studying weather patterns, daily long walks with Jane, and making new friends while cherishing old ones.

In addition to his wife, Denis is survived by his daughters, Michele Nelson (David Nelson) of King William, VA and Suzie LaSota (Andy Zimmerman) of Wilmington, two adored grandchildren, Andrew LaSota and Daisy Zimmerman, sister, Janet Powers (Mark Powers) of Latham, NY, nephews, Scott and Michael Carpentieri, stepdaughter, Erika Stillabower (Josh Izenberg) of Washington, DC, stepson, Chris Stillabower (Eugenia Stillabower) of Washington, DC and 3 step-grandchildren, William and Katherine Izenberg and Michael Stillabower.

A memorial service will be held on January 30, 2016 at St. Joseph on the Brandywine, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, DE at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Ministry of Caring, 1803 W. Sixth Street, Wilmington, DE 19805.

Los Angeles, CA, January 22, 2016 — Worldwide Facilities is proud to announce that John Addeo, the founder of three national insurance brokerage companies, will be joining its Board of Directors.

After graduating from Manhattan College, Addeo began his career with Peat, Marwick, and Mitchell as a CPA. He later worked at a leading international insurance brokerage company, where he held a number of senior-level finance and operations positions during a distinguished 20-year tenure.

In 2008, he partnered with leading middle-market private equity firm Genstar to found Confie Seguros, a nationwide insurance brokerage firm that specialized in serving the needs of the Hispanic community. When Addeo sold the company to ABRY Private Equity five years later, it had grown to operate in 10 states, with 300 retail sales outlets.

He is also the founder of USI Insurance Services Corp, now owned by Onex Partners, and Alliant Insurance Services, Inc., acquired by KKR.

GARRETT FRANK HURLEY
Obituary

HURLEY, GARRETT FRANK Age 71, passed away on January 21, 2016, at his home on the South Side.

Garrett was the proud father of Michael Lambert Hurley (Sarah Marie Conklin) of Meadville, PA, and Ian Patrick Hurley of Boston, MA; doting grandfather of Liam Robert and Owen Bradley Hurley; and lifelong friend of his former wife of 32 years, Doreen Sayers Hurley.

He was born in Belmont, MA, the son of the late Robert Lambert Hurley and Gabrielle LaBonté Hurley. Garrett graduated from Manhattan College in New York City in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in finance and economics and began his military service aboard the U.S. Navy's experimental hydrofoil ship, PCH-1 Highpoint.

Garrett's business career began as a financial analyst with Shell Oil in Houston, and continued with positions with Amerada Hess, W.R. Grace and Company and U.S. Steel. Garrett completed the corporation's Advanced Management Program in 1985.

At his retirement in 2007 he was President of USS Real Estate. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping to lead one of U.S. Steel's largest philanthropic gifts in company history, the Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, Alabama, in collaboration with the Freshwater Land Trust.

Prior to retirement he was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, PA serving as chair of the finance committee and on the building committee, as well as being involved in many outreach ministries. He also served as treasurer of the Wesley Institute.

In his retirement years, he enjoyed reading, painting, traveling, and his many friends at Fat Head's Saloon on the South Side, where he was designated a "Founding Father" of Beer Camp.

Garrett is also survived by his brother, Ian Robert Hurley of New York City and nieces, Kate Hurley, Anna Hurley Ceraso, and Wendy Rehnberg, nephew, Matthew Verey Sayers, Kenneth William and Rose Sayers, Sue Hurley, and many dear friends.

She got good news from the surgeon yesterday. He is happy with her progress and everything seems to be healing. He doesn’t need to see her again until mid-March.  We also got word that she will go to the National Rehabilitation Clinic on Sunday. She will stay there from Sunday through Friday and be allowed home for the weekends. We won’t know how long she will be there for until they fully assess her but they are estimating 8-12 weeks. We’re all delighted she will be going there. It’s the final hurdle. She is not too happy about it because she is leaving home again but she now knows it’s for her best interest that she goes. So once again, thank you and your family for all your thoughts and prayers.

Regards
Deb

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Tom Delaney's Mom

2016-Jan-26

Good Morning All,

Fellow Jasper and good friend to many of us, Tom Delaney asks for our prayersfor his Mom, Mrs. Veronica Delaney. This lovely lady is 94 years old and has been living on her own until very recently when she moved into as Tom says, a wonderful Assisted Living Community called Wartburg in Mount Vernon. One ofthe most important criteria to her is the ability to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion daily.

Today, Monday, Mrs Delaney is expected to undergo on an emergency basis a procedure to place a Pacemaker. Mrs. Delaney was rushed to the Emergency Room this past Friday and has been diagnosed with a Heart Block Condition which affects the electrical impulses in the heart and a possible arrhythemia. The MDs feel this is the availabe solution.

Please raise the volume for this good woman as we pray that all goes well free of complication and that the Pacemaker will help Mrs. Delaney get back on her feet and back to her Family and Friends as soon as possible. Please keep Tom and the Family in your prayers. Thank you. God Bless.

JNEWS: Peill-Moelter, Nicola [MC????] strives to minimize environmental footprints

The massive leak at the Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility is a stark example of why natural gas is a significant health and safety risk and not a bridge fuel to our clean energy future. The facility, the second largest in the U.S., stores vast amounts of natural gas at high pressure in underground wells once used for oil extraction more than fifty years ago.

On or about October 23rd a rupture in a 60-year old injection well pipe a thousand feet underground initiated the leak. At its peak the leak had an estimated rate of one-hundred twenty-five thousand pounds of methane per hour. To date, the cumulative emissions from this single source is equivalent to 25% of the state’s annual methane emissions from major sources like agriculture and landfills, equivalent to the annual climate pollution of almost half a million cars.

Good Afternoon Phil,

I bring good news that this group and others assisted in doing.

Mom's heart rate which by late Sunday was elevated and racing in atrial fibrillation consistently between 90 to 130 beats a minute and higher has stabilized.

As of late last night the heart rate was stabilized in the 80s.

This is different that what she entered in for with a slow heart beat. Cardiologist still attempting to determine what to do.

If this continues , she will be moved to Wartburg Rehab where she has an assisted living apartment later today or over the weekend.

Amazing, since Mom is 94 + and never had a heart problem/medication only ones she take is her prescribed eye drops , a high blood pressure pill, vitamins and a low dose aspirin.

So being hospitalized and medicated is a strange thing to her.

The local parish was great as Fr, Gus and Sister Florence Mallon stopped by frequently to pray.

Thanks again.

Praying for all our friend especially Jim Smith today.

You are all amazing!!!!

Tom

MOBIT: Farrell, Joseph B. [MCxfaculty RIP] on 2015-Dec-19

Chris Farrell

Thank you, F. John Reinke, for posting this obituary for the Jasper community and thank you for your own kind words and prayers.

Thank you, Phil Colon and members of the prayer circle, for your prayers.

I have placed a copy of my father’s obituary and other comments & reflections on a new site, http://josephbfarrell.blogspot.com/

Dad used to drive his green VW bug down the Merritt Parkway from Westport, CT, to Manhattan College from 1960-67. Our station wagon towed that driverless VW (a wonder to my 5-year-old eyes) to Cincinnati OH when we moved. The Jasper-mobile was behind us all the way!

If the FBI recommends indictment and the attorney general declines to do so, expect Saturday Night Massacre-like leaks of draft indictments, whistleblower revelations and litigation, and FBI resignations, led by the fiercely independent and intellectually honest FBI Director James Comey himself.

*** end quote ***

James Comey is the son of a Jasper J. Brien Comey Class of 1953.

I sense a Constitutional crisis coming that will make Watergate look like chump change.

Let’s hope and pray that all involved do the right thing.

Otherwise, it’s going to get very ugly very fast.
