POSITRACTION: Pilot makes a great decision

Delta pilot turns plane around to get Phoenix family to funeral in Tennessee
FOX 10’s Nicole Garcia reports.
POSTED:DEC 30 2015 10:35PM CST UPDATED:DEC 31 2015 09:30AM CST

*** begin quote ***

The pilot tells FOX 10 he didn't need words. He saw the tears, the sadness, the desperation on their faces and when he was told the family was on their way to their father's funeral, the pilot did something unprecedented. He went back to let them on the plane.

"It's very rare.. someone stops and does something so kind and we need more people like that in the world," said Short.

An airline worker told the family it was solely the pilot's decision to come back for them.

The family made it to Tennessee in time to lay their father to rest in his hometown, which was one of his last wishes.

I hope that when the time comes I can be that good.

And, next time I get a choice, I’ll take a Delta flight in honor of that pilot.

Well done!

Henry Popowski Jr.
Obituary

Henry S. Popowski, Jr., 70, cherished Father of three, beloved husband, and Son of the late Henry Popowski, Sr. and Nellie Popowski, was called to Heaven on December 31st, 2015 after a long battle with cancer.

Born on September 19th, 1945, Henry grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Manhattan College. He used his intellect, charisma, and dedicated work ethic to become a successful business executive in the manufacturing industry before retiring in 2001.

In retirement, Henry moved to Wellington, Florida and kept busy, picking up real estate, participating in the neighborhood association, and spending time with his family.

There was nothing more important to Henry than his family. He treasured his wife of 46 years and their children, and was incredibly proud of everything that they accomplished.

He will be remembered as a kind and giving man with a big heart, who would do anything to help his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, of Wellington, Florida, daughter Cristina and her husband Frank Griffin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and his two sons, Alan and his wife Christina Popowski of Newtown, Connecticut and Brian and his wife Heather Popowski of Wellington, Florida. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Ava and Samantha Popowski. There will be a private service for him at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the Popowski family requests that donations be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.

QUADRANGLE: Noah LeFevre out as athletic director. Tom O'Connor named interim AD

2016-Jan-11

http://mcquad.org/2016/01/11/new-interim-athletic-director-appointed/

New Interim Athletic Director Appointed
Posted on January 11, 2016 by DANIEL YNFANTE

Tom O’Connor has agreed to become the interim athletic director for Manhattan College, effective immediately.

On Monday morning, Richard Satterlee, vice president of student life, announced the change in a meeting with coaches and athletic staff and via an email to student-athletes.

“We are committed to providing the best experience for our student-athletes, coaches and fans,” Satterlee said in a statement released by the marketing and communication department. “The College is confident that we will find a person who will best match the needs of a long-standing and robust Division I athletic program.”

O’Connor,  who once served as the athletic director at George Mason University, Loyola (Md.) University, Santa Clara University and St. Bonaventure University, chair of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship committee, and president of Athletic Solutions Consulting, will replace Noah LeFevre as athletic director.

In almost two years at the school, LeFevre actively sought improvements for the athletic department. Among the many changes under his helm were the redesigns of the basketball and volleyball courts, the replacement of the women’s tennis program with women’s rowing, the creation of a new broadcast studio, and the partnership with Learfield Sports.

It is unclear what led to LeFevre’s deaprture and O’Connor’s subsequent hiring.

“As Noah LeFevre moves on from this position, Manhattan College thanks him for his service and truly wishes him every success going forward,” Pete McHugh, director of communications at Manhattan College said in an email sent to select media members.

Cavort, Joseph [MC1972]
Medical Director at Center for Advanced Wound Care

Medical Practice

Summary

I'm a medical doctor. Practiced as a general and vascular surgeon. Now retired from surgery. However, I've had a long standing love affair with wound care. Even during my busy surgical career, I was heavily involved in wound care, all aspects of wound care.

My favorite was direct patient contact but have also been involved in the education of wound care, setting up wound care clinics, extensive experience in wound care clinical trials and have consulted for and have lectured for the wound care industry.

I plan to retire soon from direct patient services as well and closing down my wound care clinic that I've run for over two decades. However, I've been involved in wound care for so long, I know I'll miss it.

I've accumulated 25 years of experience and knowledge in this field and I'd hate to let it go to waste. I'm therefore putting myself out there as a possible resource or consultant to the wound care health services or industry.

I've done it all in this field and I'm confident my knowledge and experience in wound care can be a significant asset to other professionals and industry alike that have the same goal I've always had, providing excellence in wound care.

Church of the Presentation - Prayer Tree Ministry "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."  (Philippians 4:6)

We have a special prayer request from Susie Smith, a prayer volunteer, who learned about a tragic accident that has currently paralyzed Garrett FitzGerald, a young man who had lived in Suffern and was an active member of our Presentation Youth Ministry in the late 90's.  Garrett was working as a Federal Agent of the United States Secret Service when he was seriously injured in a head on collision in New Hampshire on December 29th.  He sustained major injuries to his spinal cord and has no feeling from his chest down.  The wedding to his beloved fiancé, Joan, planned for March of this year took place yesterday at Boston Mass General Hospital in his ICU room. He will soon experience a very long road of intense rehabilitation which is expected to be grueling, both emotionally and physically. Let us all lift up Garrett and Joan in prayer that they will feel the presence of Our Lord in their life and look to Him for support, comfort and healing.

Great God of Peace, who loves all that You have made, we come to You and ask Your blessing on Garrett and his wife, Joan. You Lord are the miracle worker, for through the Holy Spirit Your gift of healing is alive. You Lord are our Medicine, our Healer, and Redeemer. Help Garrett, his family and friends to be aware that You walk with them during this time of pain and suffering and are guiding the doctors who care for him. You know his every need to restore him to good health in body, spirit, and mind, for You are the Divine Physician, who created the universe. Your touch can make whole every cell in his body so that he may experience in the depths of his being Your mercy, Your comforting presence, and grace to accept Your Holy Will. May the radiance of Your loving face permeate all the circumstances of his life today and in the future. May we all who pray, always give thanks for Your presence and faithful love. In Jesus name we pray for these blessings. Amen

For I am the LORD your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13

Take courage and be strong. Fear not, and be not dismayed, because the Lord thy God is with you. Joshua 1:9

In consideration of the sensitive nature of prayer requests received, we ask that you please keep the details confidential.

Thank you,

With the entire block west of Grand Central Terminal nearly demolished, work will soon begin in earnest on SL Green’s 1.7M SF mega-tower, One Vanderbilt. This means a few exciting years ahead for Ed Piccinich, the 2016 recipient of REBNY’s George M. Brooker Management Executive of the Year Award.

For Ed—who as EVP leads SL Green’s property management, construction, acquisition underwriting and technology, among other roles—this is the American Dream. The son of immigrants from present-day Croatia and the former Yugoslavia, Ed says his success is in large part due to his parents’ guidance and tenacity. After spending two years in refugee camps throughout Italy, including Trieste, Latina, Aversa and Naples, his parents never thought they’d even make it to the US. They endured hardship along the way, but finally arrived here in the late 1950s.

Ed was born in 1962 among a community of immigrants in which adults were either construction workers, longshoremen or seamstresses. After “watching one too many episodes of The Brady Bunch and wanting to live that dream,” Ed eventually set his sights on Manhattan College, where he received his BS in Mechanical Engineering.

I’d like my fellow Jaspers to pray for those in our friendship are suffering from addiction. Today as opposed to days gone by young people get caught up in new forms of addiction that work on them with pornography, illegal drugs and of course alcohol. Many families need prayer as they come to grips with the costs involved in today’s recovery treatment facilities. MFOUND: Alma Mater is called a “suitcase school”?

https://colleges.niche.com/manhattan-college/guys--and--girls/

Manhattan College
Guys & Girls OverallNiche Grade A-

*** begin quote ***

Being that Manhattan College is a small campus, students pretty much will get to know 50 percent of the campus if they hang out on campus and go out Thursday nights. The majority of girls on campus is pretty, and there are a few hot girls. The majority of guys on campus is into working out and looking their best, which a lot of girls may like. You can always find guys and girls that do not look super attractive, but you can find that at any college. Everyone at Manhattan College is very outgoing and very nice. If a student makes the effort to hang out on the quad and talk to people, that student will develop a very effective social life.

The College also has a very good academic reputation. A lot of the girls in the School of Engineering and Business are really smart. Girls and guys at the College in general are smart and work hard to make sure that they get good grades and graduate from the school with a decent GPA. A lot of the students get involved and are truly looking to prepare themselves for the "real world." The only problem is that a lot of the students are from nearby areas in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Because of this, a lot of students tend to go home on weekends, giving the College a “suitcase school” reputation. This is a little bit of a downer when 40 to 50 percent of the school is gone every weekend. All in all, the College has a good ratio of guys to girls. There are a lot of smart, hardworking people that attend MC, and the College will give students the experience of a lifetime. However, you have to go out there and be outgoing to get to know all the beautiful guys and girls on campus.

*** end quote ***

Hmmm, “suitcase school”? Never heard that before.

MNEWS: Alma Mater taken to task

Catholic Teaching Says Support Unions. Catholic Colleges Are Fighting Them.

As adjuncts organize, Catholic schools are seeking religious exemptions from labor law. Professors say the schools are violating their own core principles.

Joseph Fahey cherishes the Catholic Church's teachings on worker rights. "It's really beautiful teaching -- rock-bottom core, Matthew 25 stuff," says Fahey, a Catholic theologian. "A lot of Catholics would tell you that's why they're Catholic."

So Fahey took it as an insult to his faith when the Catholic school where he's taught for 50 years, Manhattan College, tried to prevent adjunct professors from unionizing. He was particularly galled because part-time adjuncts are among "the poorest and weakest people on campus," he says. In September, he dashed off a public letter on the matter, saying the school's trustees should be ashamed of themselves.

"This falls into the context of grave sin. This is serious stuff," Fahey, 76, told The Huffington Post. "They're violating their own mission statement that says the school is supposed to stand up for social justice. If they violate this [teaching], they may as well not call themselves a Catholic school."

Manhattan is one of a gaggle of Catholic colleges now holding up their spiritual mission as a shield against collective bargaining. At least four other schools -- Seattle University; Duquesne University, in Pittsburgh; Saint Xavier University, in Chicago; and Loyola University Chicago -- have recently sought religious exemptions from labor law that would scuttle faculty organizing campaigns.

Since at least the late 1800s, Catholic social teaching has recognized collective bargaining as a tool for social justice. Adjuncts and their allies say the schools are flouting Catholic principles by trying to deny teachers a path to join unions, particularly as Pope Francis rails against income inequality. The schools claim they are merely protecting themselves from government intrusion.

In this day and age, in First World countries, unions make no sense.

Gooferment interference in “religion” is unconstitutional.

So the Gooferment decides who is catholic enough?

Seriously.

And let’s not get started on “social justice” which is code for socialism.

As a little L libertarian, I want everyone to be free to make whatever decisions that are in their own best interest as long as it doesn’t hurt or harm others and I don’t have to pay for someone else’s choices.

Argh!

I’ll stand with Alma Mater on the union point, but not on the “social justice” one.

(Like anyone cares what I think!)

So when the Yankees successfully arranged a meeting with the Raschi family, they assured Vic that they would pay for his college education and give him spending money as well. He had to give up football, but Raschi felt that this was an opportunity that he couldn't turn down. After unsuccessfully attempting to enroll in Manhattan College past the deadline, the Yankees arranged for Raschi to attend the College of William & Mary down in Virginia, and he began his schooling there full-time in 1938. It was during his early education there that he met another student named Sally Glenn, who became his wife a few years later.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays again for Ruth

2016-Jan-15

Good Afternoon All,

We have had my DaughterIn-Law's Gram in our prayers since she had her Knee Replacement surgery this past Monday. Ruth is unstable since her operation with Blood Pressure and other issues that have arisen and perhaps not tended to immediately but the fact remains that Ruth still needs our prayers. The Family are concerned and of course worried and grateful for your prayers. Please keep Ruth in your prayers. She may be in need of a Transfusion and if so, it will be taken care of. Thank you. God Bless.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for two

2016-Jan-16

Good Afternoon All,

Some thanks and some concerns. A prayer of thanks for the continuing recovery after surgery of Father Erwin. He experienced some pain and discomfort after knee replacement surgery but is recuperating well. I believe he has now been moved to a rehab location for Physical Therapy and recovery. Please keep this good man and friend in your prayers during the following weeks.

I ask you for your continued prayers for Ruth, my Daughter-In-Law's Gram. Her surgery seems to have gone well but heart and other issues have arisen whose attention to and care leave something to be desired. Although she is a strong person, she is frightened but dealing with it as best she can. Please keep Ruth in your prayers.

Thank you. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: The Gooferment WILL delay or prevent good care

Payment rules shape access to technology

Every year, CMS (the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) develops regulations governing the payment of treatments and services provided to the one in three Americans covered by Medicare or Medicaid. They determine not only which technologies will be funded, but also how, when and at what level they will be reimbursed.

Payment matters. So to lack reimbursement is, effectively, to not exist at all.

For example, even though it’s becoming a common feature in the commercial market, telemedicine adoption in the Medicare population remains rare. CMS restricts when “e-visits” can be reimbursed — typically only if the patient is already physically present at a physician’s office or hospital, only in rural areas and only by live, two-way video.

Similarly, Medicare pays for diabetes screening and treatment, but is silent on whether evidence-based behavioral and technology-enabled interventions intended to prevent disease are reimbursable. Unsurprisingly, to date, few seniors have participated in these preventative activities.

“Of particular concern,” the agency has admitted in the past, “is the adequacy of Medicare’s payment systems in facilitating access to new technologies for Medicare beneficiaries.”

Although difficult to quantify, the downstream effects may go further than access alone. These policies also shape how entrepreneurs and investors size up market opportunities and form views on product strategy. By erecting barriers to adoption of technology, CMS could inadvertently subvert its very development.

The Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy.

So WHY do we permit it to screw up something so important as “health”, “health care", "health care insurance", or  any thing else!
