POSITRACTION: What’s better medicine for a sick almost teenager girl?

Frat Brothers Brighten Hospital Room For Brave Little Girl
By Barbara Diamond

*** begin quote ***

Twelve-year-old Lexi Brown has cancer, and she recently spent some time at the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA in California. Her hospital room faced one of the massive frat houses on UCLA’s fraternity row. To pass the time and have a little fun, Lexi and her mom put a sign in the window asking for a pizza delivery, not thinking it would lead to something so incredible.

The members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house heard about the sign, so they walked across the street. Not only did they bring pizza, but they also brought a bouquet of roses, and a guitar. Here was a bunch of 20-something frat guys, taking time out of their day to play music for a sick little girl. Lexi’s mom, Lisa, was touched to tears.

The surprises didn’t end there. Lexi struck up a friendship with the SAE fraternity. The guys arranged for all sorts of exciting visits for Lexi, from the UCLA football team to women’s tennis players. But Lexi’s newfound popularity didn’t stop the frat brothers from continuing to show up at her hospital bed — to play cards, to bring her a stuffed animal, or to simply sit and talk.

*** end quote ***

What’s better medicine for a sick almost teenager girl?

A room full of hot frat boys making a fuss over her.

Read the rest of the story for another great idea.

Well done gentlemen! Well done.

Joseph B. Farrell
Obituary

Joseph Brendan Farrell died peacefully in his home on December 19, 2015 at the age of 92 surrounded by his children.

He is survived by his seven children: Joe Farrell of Lewes, Delaware, Bob Farrell (Michelle) of Bellevue, Kentucky, Rose Hammell of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Mary Rosenfeldt, Tom (Ginny) Farrell, Chris Farrell (LeAnn) and Theresa Farrell all of Cincinnati. He was a loving grandfather to many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Agnes Farrell, his loving wife of 63 years, Winifred Farrell, his sister, Agnes Marsh and his brother, William Farrell, one son-in-law, John Rosenfeldt, one grandson, Reed Farrell and two infant granddaughters, Katherine and Stephanie Farrell.

Joseph grew up in the Bronx, New York. He graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1944, M.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1947 and a Ph. D from Cornell University in 1954.

He worked in private industry until 1960 when he answered the call to teach chemical engineering at Manhattan College. When asked by his seven children why he left, he said it was more important to make a positive difference in the vocation we chose, rather than how much money we would make.

Joe moved his family to Cincinnati in 1967 to work for the EPA to help in the new field of Environmental Science. While at the EPA, Dr. Farrell's work directly impacted the treatment of all domestic waste water in the United States. His work was instrumental in developing the current framework for biosolids management, allowing for beneficial land application for soil replenishment, while ensuring public safety by defining the treatment to eliminate harmful microorganisms and reduce metals in domestic biosolids.

He retired from the EPA in 1993 and continued as an environmental consultant until 2012. His contributions to protect public and environmental health have stood the test of time, and have been recognized with distinguished honors, including the "William W. Edgar Pioneer Award" for outstanding contributions to the disinfection field, awarded in 2005 by the Water Environment Federation.

Joseph was a parishioner of Guardian Angels Parish for 48 years serving in a variety of leadership roles including President of both the School Board and Parish Council. Since he retired from the EPA, he has enjoyed serving various charities, but he had a particular passion for his work as a tutor and mentor in math and science for students from Purcell-Marian.

Memorial Mass will be held at Guardian Angels Church on January 9 at 10 am. Friends may greet family members at 9 a.m. in the Gathering Space, and there will be a reception immediately following the mass. Memorial contributions can be made to C/O Sister Janet Linz, Lavatas Powell Tutoring/Mentoring Program, 2935 Hackberry, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206.

I have worked for 33 years in sales. I have done multi level marketing, social media marketing, email marketing and the old snail mail marketing too. MOBIT: Hairston, William B. Jr. [MCattendee RIP] on 2015-Dec-24

2015-Dec-28

http://obits.al.com/obituaries/birmingham/obituary.aspx?n=William-B-Hairston&pid=177033057

William B. Hairston Jr.
Obituary
December 14, 1924 - December 24, 2015

Bill (or Billy to his friends that knew him the longest) peacefully departed from his home in Birmingham, Alabama to be fully with his savior this past Christmas Eve. He was the son of the late William B. Hairston and Kate Steele Hairston, both of Birmingham. Bill is survived by his wife of sixty years, Louise ("Weezie") Poe Hairston, his son Bill Hairston III (Lynn) of Birmingham, his sister Kathryn H. Green of Alexandria, Virginia, and his three nephews: Gordon Green (Barbara) of Grey, Georgia, Russell Green of Centreville, Virginia, and Dillard Green (Regina) of Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

While attending Phillips High School, Bill caught his first glance of Weezie at a dance, but their marriage would have to wait for fifteen long years. During those years, Bill began his studies at the University of Alabama, only to have those scholastic endeavors postponed by World War II. Bill's service to his country began with his education as an engineer at Manhattan College. But as the Nazi war machine raged across Europe, this education was also postponed so that Bill could train to be a paratrooper. A training accident injured Bill's knee (an injury that would continue to plague him the rest of his life) and Bill was transferred into the infantry. As a Sergeant with the 69th Infantry Division, Bill spent the remainder of his military service in the European theatre pushing across France, until finally meeting up with the Russian forces in the vicinities of Torgau and Strehla, Germany, thereby splitting the Nazi forces into two parts and hastening the end of this bloody conflict. In recognition of his service, Bill was awarded the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Upon returning home, Bill completed his studies at the University of Alabama obtaining a BS degree from the Commerce School (1949) and a LLB degree from the Law School (1950). While at Alabama, he was inducted into both Omicron Delta Kappa, and Jasons. Socially he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity (and later was inducted into ATO's hall of fame). His graduation, however, did not end his connection with his alma mater. In the years that followed, Bill would become a charter member of the Farrah Law Society, the president of both the UA Law School Alumni Association and of the UA Law School Foundation where he continued to serve with distinction as an emeritus director.

In 2001, Bill was honored to receive the Sam W. Pipes Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater. Following graduation, Bill, along with Ben A. Engel, founded a law firm that still bears his name. Later, Rick Johanson would join them and build on Bill's teaching and mentoring practices to both clients and colleagues in the legal profession.

Bill's sixty year legacy practicing law, can be felt in many arenas. He taught "Bills and Notes" at the Birmingham School of Law, receiving the 1968 Outstanding Faculty Award. He authored the treatise entitled Detinue, Executions, and Mechanics' Liens: The Law in Alabama. (The Harrison Co., 1982. 124 pp. Latest Update 1999). He was instrumental in developing a unified judicial system in the state. He instituted in Birmingham the nation's first Law Day Parade, receiving the ABA's Award of Merit. After working his way up the ranks Bill was elected president first of the Birmingham Bar Association (Secretary, 1967; Vice President, 1969; President, 1970), and then of the Alabama Bar Association (Member, Board of Commissioners, 1973-1979; Second Vice President, 1978; Chairman, Disciplinary Commission, 1978-1979; President-Elect, 1982; President, 1983-1984). In recognition of these services Bill, in 2004, received the Birmingham Bar Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition to these bar associations, and the American Bar Association, Bill was a life fellow of both the Alabama Bar Foundation, and the American Bar Foundation, and a member of both the Southern Conference of Bar Presidents and the National Conference of Bar Presidents. He was a fellow of American College of Trial Lawyers. He served as the "Recorder" in Leeds, Alabama, and as a member of the Alabama Judicial Conference, the Judicial Inquiry Commission, and the Alabama Law Institute. In the federal arena, Bill was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, and a trustee of and later president (1986-1990) of the Eleventh Circuit Historical Society.

He also served on the management board of the downtown YMCA, as the treasurer of Vestavia Country Club and as a member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club. Following his marriage to Weezie in 1955, Bill transferred his membership from Sixth Avenue Presbyterian Church to Highlands United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for over fifty years, held every office, including chairman of the Board of Stewards, and was instrumental in establishing Highlands' foundation, and the Methodist Educational Leave Society (now the Institute for Clergy Excellence "ICE").

But his real passion was one he shared with his wife - the cultivation of the state flower. These gems were his pride and joy, and he showed them throughout the southeast. Bill was president and show chairman of the Birmingham Camellia Society, judge of the American Camellia Society and is honored to have a camellia that bears his name.

The family would like to express its gratitude and love to Sharon Hagler for her compassionate care, along with special recognition and thanks to Ida Brand, Kandace Beasley, and Liz Rayford, and also to Kris and Sheila from New Beacon Hospice whose tender care allowed Bill to rest peacefully in his home until the time of his eternal rest.

Funeral service for Bill will be held Wednesday, December 30th at 10:00 a.m. at Highlands United Methodist Church with committal in Highlands’ columbarium and visitation in the fellowship hall to follow. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Music Fund of Highlands United Methodist Church (1045 20th St S, Birmingham, AL 35205).

Mark's brother, sister-in-law and nephews, George, Kerin, Brett Sims and Jakeb Manning, lost their home, vehicles, and personal possessions in the recent tornado.  The family was inside the home and barely made it into the bathroom before the house completely collapsed around them.  They walked away by the grace of God sustaining only minor injuries.  George has served both local and federal law enforcement for the past 32 years.  George has unselfishly given his life to serve and protect others, and we feel this is an opportunity to give back.  Kerin, is an amazing lady.  She is so giving, loving and selfless.  She loves the Lord, and breaths a breath of life into the whole family.  Brett was wounded in combat while serving in Afghanistan, and is currently living with George and Kerin while he recovers from his injuries.  Jakeb has just finished basic training at Ft Benning, GA, and is now starting airborne training.   George, Kerin and family need some help to get back on their feet.  Anything, you can give will be so greatly appreciated, and if you are unable to give, please keep them in your prayers.  God is so good and faithful, and we are so thankful for their lives being spared.

JEMAIL: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) Christmas Gift - Manhattan Connection

2015-Dec-30

Dear John,

When looking for a gift for our daughter Teri (McEneney) Johnson,'81,
I became aware of a recent book, "THE GAME" written by Tommy Reynolds, '91.
Tommy is the the son of the late Thomas Reynolds,'50, and the nephew of the
late Peter Reynolds, '49, former President of the Manhattan College Alumni
Society.

What made this gift so appropriate is that many years ago, the Reynolds
family rented a summer place across the street from our place in Long Beach.
Tommy's parents were delighted to learn that Teri was an experienced Baby
Sitter, and utilized her services many nights that summer. The parents had a
relaxing Summer and Teri had a lucrative one! How special is it when
a Baby Sitter gets a book for a present written by one of her charges - and a
fellow JASPER as well?

The full title of the Book is: "THE GAME Baseball and America, Growin'
Up Together". The Publisher is: Donnalink Publications: www.donnalink.com.
The book can also be ordered on Amazon.

Best,

Mike

Modern-day visitors to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor would hardly recognize the waterfront of Peter E. Dans’s latest children’s book. A bustling port that housed the busiest intersection in the US, the Baltimore harbor of 1937-1955 was teeming with-longshoremen, horse-drawn wagons, cars, and pedestrians – all of them directed “almost like a ballet” by Sergeant Bill McKeldin and his trusty horse Bob. Sergeant Bill and His Horse Bob is a playful profile of this real-life Baltimore figure, the brother of Theodore McKeldin, a Baltimore Mayor and later Governor of Maryland. His canny direction and unforgettable personality ensured many a commuter a safe and enjoyable trip.

Sergeant Bill and His Horse Bob is another gem celebrating Baltimore from the author who penned Perry’s Baltimore Adventure: A Bird’s-Eye View of Charm City, a perennial favorite. of readers from two to ninety-two. Featuring lively illustrations by Mary Grace Corpus, the book gives young readers a glimpse of an earlier time – and the local character who helped define it. Dans takes us to a time before stoplights and signals, when Sergeant Bill perched in a traffic booth at the intersection of Light and Pratt Streets, his horse Bob standing nearby with his nose in the direction of traffic flow. We learn how Sergeant Bill got his nickname, “the Whistler of Pratt and Light Street,” from whistling through his teeth at motorists and pedestrians. When Sergeant Bill gets a visit from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the everyday chaos of Baltimore traffic grows greater as the President’s dog Fala spies a cat and leaps out of his car! Bill and Bob must team up to rescue Fala from the busy Baltimore waterfront before the little dog sets sail as an unexpected passenger on the South-America-bound ship, the Santa Rosa.

Sergeant Bill and His Horse Bob is a fun reimagining of a beloved public figure’s service to his city. Dans succeeds once again in honoring a local legend of days past, making collective memory accessible to younger generations.

Peter E. Dans M.D. is an emeritus Associate Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins. His first children’s book, Perry’s Baltimore Adventure, celebrated the return of the peregrine falcons to Baltimore in 1978. The book is used in the Baltimore and Baltimore County Public Schools to teach urban geography. Among his other books are Doctors in the Movies: Boil the Water and Just Say Aah! and Christians in the Movies: A Century of Saints and Sinners. Dans’s memoir, Life on the Lower East Side, 1937 to 1950, was coauthored with photographer Rebecca Lepkoff and Suzanne Wasserman.

Mary Grace Corpus is a freelance illustrator from Indiana, currently living in Baltimore after graduating from Maryland Institute College of Art. She is the illustrator for a recent novel by Eden Bowditch, The Ravens of Solemano. Sergeant Bill and His Horse Bob is her first children’s book.

Morning Prayer

Dear Lord,

So far I've done all right.
I haven't gossipped,
haven't lost my temper,
haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent.
I'm really glad about that.

But in a few minutes, God,
I'm going to get out of bed.
And from then on,
I'm going to need a lot more help.

Folks, two days before Christmas, the 22 year-old daughter of one of my best friends from college died in a tragic car accident in South Carolina. Last night, we learned that a couple who live around the block from us were also killed on Tuesday in a car accident near Killington, Vermont. The parents and a friend of theirs were killed. Their three children thankfully survived, but are now in intensive care and are parent-less.I am not looking for my FB friends to offer me any sympathies for these losses. I just want to remind you all to please be careful tonight, and every night. And remember: love and love alone is what it's all about.

ENDNOTE: Swift-mas?

2015-Jan-02

http://www.teenvogue.com/story/taylor-swift-elf-christmas

ENTERTAINMENT
Proof Taylor Swift Is An Actual Elf
And it's visual proof no less.
Casey Lewis
DEC 26, 2015 11:07AM EST

*** begin quote ***

If you're beginning to think Taylor might actually be Santa Claus, well, same. But her lack of snowy-white facial hair and cookie belly complicates that theory a bit. Besides, it would take some Hannah Montana-level trickery to be both a world-famous pop star and a folkloric grandfather.

Now, though, we finally get it: Taylor is an actual card-carrying, North Pole-dwelling, Drake-quoting elf.

*** end quote ***

Now I know you’re used to me grumping or ranting in this space week after week. And the happy stuff goes in front, being all positivity and such.

But, this endnote is about a really lady in the entertainment industry. That industry is a cesspool of ego, greed, and narcism. Revolving beds and 60 minute “marriages” revolt me.

Here’s a contra-example.

Noblesse oblige

This young woman has everything it seems but yet still seems to take great person joy in surprising her fans in strange ways.

Now bear in mind, any fan would be pleased with merely a post on their Facebook page or twitter stream from @tswift13, but to get Christmas / Hanukah presents from “her ladyship” (after all she’s like American royalty). Then imagine a personal visit delivering the gifts.

It seems that when she does a concert, she always makes time for sick children. Even showing up at the hospital. (I see her as another Princess Di! The best of “royalty”.)

(I’m sure some of it is PR, but if it was that easy, then why don’t other “stars” do it?)

I’ve been watching her since she was a fledgling star with her break out song about “Tim McGraw”. And, she captured my imagination with an early music video of “Mary’s song”.

FMPOV she deserves all the blessing she’s receiving, because she passes them right along.

And, after all what’s wrong with a fat old white guy injineer poor old senior citizen on a fixed income being an OLD “swiftie”!

Laugh, I hope when I win the Lotto, I can have such class and generosity.

Dona Nobis Pacem
