POSITRACTION: Two nameless bodies washed up on the beach

2015-Oct-25

Anders Fjellberg: Two nameless bodies washed up on the beach.

*** begin quote ***

When two bodies wearing identical wetsuits washed ashore in Norway and the Netherlands, journalist Anders Fjellberg and photographer Tomm Christiansen started a search to answer the question: who were these people? What they found and reported in Norway’s “Dagbladet” is that everybody has a name, everybody has a story and everybody is someone.

*** and ***

To me, this is a story about two questions that I think we all share: what is a better life, and what am I willing to do to achieve it? And to me, and probably a lot of you, a better life would mean being able to do more of what we think of as meaningful, whether that be spending more time with your family and friends, travel to an exotic place, or just getting money to buy that cool new device or a pair of new sneakers. And this is all within our reach pretty easily.

But if you are fleeing a war zone, the answers to those two questions are dramatically different. A better life is a life in safety. It's a life in dignity. A better life means not having your house bombed, not fearing being kidnapped. It means being able to send your children to school, go to university, or just find work to be able to provide for yourself and the ones you love. A better life would be a future of some possibilities compared to nearly none, and that's a strong motivation.

*** end quote ***

Kudos to these men for figuring it out. Praise to the editor who approved it.

This puts a face to the “refugee story”.

There’s something universal about wanting a better peaceful life.

Robert B. Alesi, president of Xaverian High School, at 7100 Shore Road, announced on Oct. 22 that the school has hired sports coaches for girls’ teams.

*** and ***

Xaverian High School, established in 1957 by the Xaverian Brothers, a Catholic religious order, has had an all-male student body in high school grades (9, 10, 11 and 12) throughout its history.

Earlier this year, the school announced that starting in 2016, it will admit female high school students.

Kennedy holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology/exercise science from Manhattan College, where she was a dual sport Division 1 athlete in soccer and track. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in adolescence education at the College of Staten Island.

Prior to joining Xaverian, Kennedy worked as a strength and conditioning coach where she had the opportunity to work with members of professional football, hockey, soccer and baseball programs.

Kennedy currently coaches two teams, U9 and U16, with Staten Island United, a travel soccer program. She also serves as director of DK3 Academy, a travel lacrosse program in Staten Island that focuses on placing high school players in college.

“To be given the opportunity to help shape the girls’ soccer and lacrosse programs is so exciting,” she said.

Joseph Procaccini M.D.
Obituary

PROCACCINI, JOSEPH P. M.D. 67, of Johnston, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence.

Joseph was the cherished husband of Alberta F. (Ristigian) Procaccini. Born in Providence, he was a son of Martha (Bellotti) Procaccini and the late Joseph Procaccini. Besides his wife, he is survived by his loving son Joseph M. Procaccini of Johnston. Joseph was the brother of Martha Nardacci (husband Nick) and Charles Procaccini (wife Robyn). He was brother-in-law to Albert Ristigian Jr., Renee Gasparri (husband Chris), Karen Laflamme (husband Claude) and Judith Ristigian. He also leaves behind many adored nieces and nephews; Nicholas Nardacci and his wife Valery, Loriann Nardacci and her partner Nicholas Mauro, Jacqueline Gasparri, Julianna Procaccini, Maria Procaccini, Alexandra Laflamme, Talia Laflamme and Alex Zayat. Joseph was the great uncle of Leonardo Nardacci.

Joseph graduated with high honors from LaSalle Academy. He was a summa cum laude graduate of Manhattan College and a magna cum laude graduate of Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, NE. He completed a Family Practice residency at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ. He started his career as a part-time emergency room physician in Washington DC where he was also employed at NIH.

Joseph opened a private Medical Practice in Johnston RI from 1980-1993. He was a clinical instructor in Family Medicine at Brown University School of Medicine from 1984 to 1993. He then began his career at Reliant Medical Group in MA, where he worked in Adult Urgent care from 1993 to the present.

His colleagues often commented what a difference one person makes in the lives of others. They have described "Dr. Joe" as someone with a following of fans that included patients', colleagues and staff. His calm demeanor and soothing voice helped many through challenging times. His colleagues looked to him for his wisdom, intelligence and wonderful wit.

The family wishes to acknowledge their gratitude and deep appreciation to Dr. Joseph DiBenedetto, Jr. and his wife Pat. Dr. DiBenedetto was a friend for more than 30 years. As Joseph's physician, he gave him the greatest gift of many quality years beyond what was one would expect, given his rare diagnosis.

Joseph was the most loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and colleague. He believed his purpose in life was to be of service to those who were ill and needed help. He will be missed by all.

Dear Friends & Colleagues:

I know that we all have charities and organizations that are important to us. The National Kidney Foundation is important to me on a very personal level.

On August 18, 2000, 15 years ago, my nephew Peter and I shared in a life changing event -- I donated a kidney to Peter.

Prior to the transplant Peter's life was controlled by kidney disease -- doctor's appointments, tests, dialysis machines... today Peter's life is controlled by Peter. The kidney transplant enabled Peter to finish college, pursue a career in Communications, and to live a full, active life.

Physically, donating a kidney has not limited my abilities in any way; emotionally it has reinforced how precious life is. As a result of this transplant, Peter and I have become very involved with the National Kidney Foundation and the fight against Kidney Disease.

As I am sure you understand, it is not always comfortable sending out requests for donations. However, I am trying to remember the cardinal rule of fundraising, which is that you are providing donors an opportunity to give to a very worthy cause. It is in that spirit that I am requesting donations. Every dollar helps; no donation is too small.

Please feel free to join the Got Kidney's Team in the 2015 walk in NYC on Sunday November 8th at Foley Square.

Thank you for helping us reach our fundraising goal!

George Hejduk and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are forever linked
By Adam Jardy The Columbus Dispatch  •  Thursday October 29, 2015 2:30 PM

*** begin quote ***

Hejduk’s parents moved to Manhattan and settled into the Dyckman Houses in 1953, where were located right up the street from St. Jude’s Elementary School. He earned a partial basketball scholarship to play for Manhattan College and was on the team for the 1961-62 season when he needed to do some volunteer work as part of his physical education curriculum. That led him to reach out to Ferrell Hopkins, one of his former coaches who was at St. Jude’s, to work with his team on a part-time basis.

As a result, Hejduk found himself in the multi-purpose gym with a young Lew Alcindor. The workout took place on the east side of the gym on a hoop with a wooden backboard, Hejduk said.

“At the time, Lew Alcindor was in the fifth grade, he said (on the show), but I think it was the sixth grade,” Hejduk said. “Farrell said, “Can you work with him? He’s so clumsy.’ My mother used to feel sorry for him because in the sixth grade he was 6-foot-6. I got him to do the George Mikan drill.”

*** and ***

On Mike and Mike, Abdul-Jabbar said he had the shot down to a science by the time he entered Power Memorial High School.

“It’s not that hard to learn,” he said. “I really just adapted the George Mikan drill to my own physique and my own talents. I started in the fifth grade, some guy that worked with my coach said, ‘He’s probably going to be a center. We’ll show him the George Mikan drill,’ and that’s all I had. I worked on that through eighth grade so when I entered high school I had the shot down.”

Hejduk said he has periodically gotten phone calls throughout the years from friends and co-workers who have heard Abdul-Jabbar mention a coach named George who taught him the drill, although he has said he doesn’t remember the coach’s last name.

“If I saw him, he’d remember me,” Hejduk said. “What am I to him? A famous celebrity like that, he can’t remember everybody.”

Beamon will be one of 18 players at training camp, and the Legends will keep 10.

Jim Murphy ’79 not only used his liberal arts education to attend and graduate from veterinary school many years after college, but his fascination with the Beach Boys enticed him to write a book on the true story of how the band formed and went on to become one of America’s most popular rock groups.

Teacher’s Aide Noticed Something Wasn’t Quite Right Inside Mystery Man’s Car. What She Did Next Has People Calling Her a Hero.

A California teaching assistant is being called a hero after rescuing a student from a man who she believed was attempting to kidnap the child.

It all unfolded as Sandra Ferguson was on her way to Sutter Elementary School in Antioch, California, on Friday, when she noticed something curious: an 11-year-old student from her school was inside of a car with an individual whom she had not seen before, the Daily Mail reported.

Feeling uneasy about what she observed, Ferguson acted quick to pull her car in front of the man’s vehicle so as to block him from driving away.

“I said, ‘Sweetheart, is that your dad?’ She said, ‘No he’s a friend.’ I said, ‘No, he’s not your friend!’” Ferguson told KGO-TV. “I put my car in front of his and blocked him in. I told her, ‘You get out of that truck right now!’”

“It was kind of like a superwoman power thing,” Ferguson told KGO-TV. “I can’t believe it did that!”

Kudos to this lady.

How many of us would be that alert to one’s surroundings and act on their instincts?

I hope I could do that.

We’re always timid and want to MYOB. Places to go; people to see. Rush, rush, but do we see what’s going on around us?

From now on, I’ll be looking.

Maybe we can all emulate Jasper-man.

Glad it worked out for the child and the lady.

She should have been armed; the perp might have been.

Special circle of Hell for this poor excuse of a man.
