POSITRACTION: Aaron and Evan Steed to the rescue

This Moving Company Helps Women Leave Abusive Homes At No Cost
by Good News Network - September 10, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Getting out of an abusive relationship isn’t easy—but actually packing up and moving out is even more daunting.

Hundreds of women have Aaron and Evan Steed to thank for coming to the rescue. These owners of a California moving company have volunteered to complete the move for them, free of charge.

When they first started their business, Meathead Movers in 1997, the high school athletes were simply looking for a way to earn some extra cash. Back then, their fee was usually $20 and a pizza.

As their business grew, the Steeds started getting occasional, frantic phone calls from women with little or no money who wanted to quickly move out before their abusers returned home.

The sympathetic movers always declined any compensation and rushed to the address to load their belongings.

One day, in 2000, a situation turned volatile when the abuser came home in the middle of the move. It was then that the company decided it had to ensure that the women and the moving crew were both safe, so they partnered with a local women’s shelter.

“What was good about that is, they could be vetting the requests for help, supporting the women with counseling, and making sure when we went in, the proper restraining orders were in place, or police were on hand if necessary,” Meathead’s CEO Aaron Steed told Good News Network.

Beth Raub, director of the local women’s shelter, said that one of their staff is always on-site the day of the move so they can “call law enforcement if things get dicey.”

What a great bunch of men.

Hope that anyone who needs movers in Southern California gives them their business.

Sigh!

Wish more people would do more stuff like this.

Hole in One Today - Out on the course today with my nephew Wes Fey this morning, I hit a 7 iron on a 118 yard par 3. I thought i overshot the hole and couldn't find the ball in the rough, so I dropped a ball, chipped up and putted out. When I went to lift the ball out, I saw another ball already in the cup. I thought it was someone else's ball, but when I lifted it out, I realized it was the first ball I had hit off the tee. Celebrating today because this is my first hole in one ever!

On the Record: Actor Mike Mazurki’s legend looms large
Steve Amedio
POSTED: 09/19/15, 9:41 PM EDT

*** begin quote ***

The actor in question was Mike Mazurki, who traditionally played movie “heavies.”

But, Mazurki, in real life, was neither a bad guy nor from Brooklyn.

Lost to us for nearly 25 years now, the big, rough-appearing motion picture star with the gruff voice, lived much of his early life in Cohoes (at the bottom of the city’s hill section, not far from the Cohoes Falls). According to those who knew him, he was the antithesis of his bad-guy screen image.

*** and ***

To typify the spirit of the club, a silver mold of Mazurki’s cauliflower ear was created and its photo is its official symbol and is trademarked.

“Mike was not only a celebrity, but he was a huge humanitarian,” says Karl Lauer, who has long been a club administrator.

“I was a promoter and, one year, Mike nominated me to be a club member. He asked what I was doing one day and asked me to go to lunch with him. That was a thrill, having a famous movie star asking me to lunch.

“Mike wanted me to become the club’s business manager. He said, `let me tell you what it’s all about,’ and he handed me a bunch of envelopes, each with a person’s name and address on it to be delivered. Each envelope was stuffed with money, and he wanted me to give the envelopes to each of those people.

“They were old-timers down on their luck; guys who couldn’t pay their rent, had their electricity turned off, couldn’t pay medical bills … whatever. The money didn’t come from the club. It came directly from Mike. He was extremely generous.”

And, extremely non-pretentious.

QUADRANGLE: Engineering is the hardest major -- a myth?

The Myths of Manhattan College?
Posted on September 18, 2015 by MANHATTAN QUADRANGLE

*** begin quote ***

Myth 2: Engineering is the hardest major and Communications is the easiest.

There is no doubt that engineering is a hard major but is it really the hardest? There are five accredited undergraduate degrees: chemical, civil, computer, electrical, and mechanical. Each engineering student takes about 131-134 credits by the time they graduate. An engineer is in the classroom about 16 hours a week. The upperclassmen can put in up to 60 hours a week of work.

“We expect our students to get their degree in four years. That means you aren’t going to have as much time as the other students, being an engineer, but if you manage your time well, you should have at least one day off to enjoy yourself, then get right back to it. It cost too much money to go here an extra year just to get your degree,” Tim Ward, Dean of the School of Engineering, said.

“Engineering may not necessarily be the hardest major but we believe there’s more work. Some of our students tell us that it is hard for them to study because they are assigned more work than their roommate. How hard your major is depends on the individual. I’ve met engineers that no matter what they did it would have been easy,” Ward said.

On the other hand, the bachelor’s degree for a communications major is 120 credits total and the students are in the classroom roughly 16 hours a week, depending on the concentration.

“In communication, the majority of the classes have to do with writing, and this is the most important skill set you can develop as a student of communication. And, of course, you cannot write if you cannot read, so there is a lot of reading involved too,” Thom Gencarelli, Chair of the communications department, said.

“Compared to engineering, if a student in Calculus 1 failed a course, then the instructor would not let them move on because that student needs those skills to move on to Calculus 2. We don’t have that in the literature and humanities classes,” Gencarelli said.

I’d say injineering  is harder.

In my last column, I referred to “men of a certain age,” zeroing in on the readers most likely to be fascinated in the ’70s and ’80s with both old monster movies and young Brooke Shields. But in no way do I believe water is a male problem (or a female one, at that). Water is an issue that unites us all.

As President Raśl Castro has opened the Marxist economy to incremental private enterprise and real estate, Cuba faces the major challenge of brain drain: how to keep its best and brightest.

After freshman year in University of Havana’s top engineering track, Daniel saw no future. So on a government-approved trip to Mexico, he made his way to a Homeland Security station at the border of McAllen, Texas.

“I want to finish college in America,” he recalls telling the intake official. The man wished him luck. The next day he flew to Miami, where two of his maternal aunts live with their husbands.

Given temporary residential status in Miami, Daniel found work in a Cuban restaurant, switched to a job selling shoes, then a hotel clerk. He took ESL lessons at Miami-Dade Community College and won a statewide math prize. He then switched to private tutoring in math and science for the children of doctors, lawyers and other wealthy Cuban Americans.

“Within two years in Miami I was making $35,000, tutoring children of people who left Cuba very young or were born in America,” he says. “Tutoring helped me learn English.”

Back in Havana, Ana fretted over Daniel, her son who was ever capable of negotiating his way in the world. How long before she saw him?

Daniel left Miami in 2007 as his mother was gravitating back to church. Three years later, he persuaded Ana and his stepbrother to leave Cuba for Miami.

By 2012, Daniel was pursuing an engineering degree on scholarship at Manhattan College. In five years, he had mastered English, vaulted to the city of cities and that autumn landed a part-time job at Goldman Sachs.

ENDNOTE: "This kind of butchery erodes the character of our nation,” Fiorina said

Liberals Accuse Carly Fiorina of ‘Lying’ About Graphic Planned Parenthood Video Description During GOP Debate — but What’s the Full Story?
Sep. 17, 2015 1:15pm
Billy Hallowell

*** begin quote ***

“I didn’t misspeak … . This kind of butchery erodes the character of our nation,” Fiorina said. ”Rest assured, I have seen the images I talked about last night. Rest assured that human lives are being aborted fully formed in order to harvest body parts.”

David Daleiden, the project lead for the Center for Medical Progress, told TheBlaze in a statement that “the footage in question was from Grantham Collection & Center for Bio-Ethical Reform used to illustrate the first person eye witness testimony of Holly O’Donnell of the barbaric acts committed inside Planned Parenthood abortion facilities.”

“Planned Parenthood and their supporters are afraid to watch and talk about this footage because it shows their illicit baby parts trade for what it really is: the industrial-scale commodification and exploitation of tiny human beings,” Daleiden said.

*** end quote ***

From time to time, I’ve watched as much of those videos as I could tolerate.

I think the analogy or comparison to the Nazi “medical experiments” is appropriate.

I don’t understand why there have not been arrests and prosecutions — for murder.

Argh!

How “planned parenthood” survives this is beyond me?

I feel better about my decision not to contribute to a runner in the Koleman events because of their connection to Planned Parenthood.

Argh!

Disgusting, barbaric, and revulsion can’t describe my feelings.
