Patrick Oehler, photographer/videographer: Patrick discovered his passion for capturing pictures while taking his first photography class at the age of 17. Two years later, while attending Suffolk County Community College, Patrick connected this love of photography to journalism by joining The Compass student newspaper. He carried this over to Manhattan College, where he quickly became the photography editor at The Quadrangle. While most college students were partying, he was roaming the city with his camera capturing cityscapes and photographing musicians (his roommate was a drummer).
After college, Patrick started freelancing for The Sentinel and Enterprise in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and discovered that photojournalism was his calling. He later landed freelance work with Newsday, and did that for more than six years. Afterward, he worked at a photo studio in New York City, honing skills in other areas of photography. As part of the Journal, Patrick has relocated to the Hudson Valley. He’s enjoying the outdoors, great food and the visual beauty the region offers to someone whose life has been focused on capturing the world around him.

of Boynton Beach, FL and Forest Hills, NY on August 8th - just six days before his 69th birthday.
Loving husband of Min (Wang), father of Christopher, Tara, and Jason, stepfather of Richard Li, proud grandparent of Frank and Emilia, father-in-law of Megan (Connors), brother of John C., Brendan, T.J., and Irene Elliott. Jim was predeceased by his parents, John T. and Mary Angela (Connaghan), and brother Michael.
A graduate of Bergen Catholic High School and Manhattan College, with an MBA from NYU's Stern College of Business, Jim was for ten years Vice President, Risk & Insurance Management at Morgan Stanley and held many other executive titles during his 40 year financial services industry career.
An automotive enthusiast for all of his life, Jim designed unique cars and established racing records.
Faithful son, devoted spouse, caring father, loyal brother, persevering friend: we will miss Jim always.

I would have agreed with FJohn Reinke about the transition from the term "Global Warming" to "Climate Change," but my thoughts have changed a bit after doing a bit more research on it using a tool I've often used against Antismokers when they distort history in their efforts. It's called Google N-Gram, and it allows entering a word or phrase to see a graph of frequency in writings since 1800. Using that tool for example I was able to show how "Kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray." was a created sound-bite ... a concept that didn't exist until pushed by the antismoking movement of the 1970s.
In this instance I entered "climate change" and "global warming" and found this:

As you can see, both terms came into regular use around the same time just before 1980, and grew at the same pace until about 1994. From 1995 onward "climate change" far outstripped global warming.
Soooo... it's not as though it was created out of nowhere by the Warmers, it simply got moved into a more prominent position, as, I believe, Michael Crichton predicted in his novel "State Of Fear," as the Warming argument became more difficult to maintain.

2015-Aug-23This is in response to the Men's Alumni retreat that Ed McEneney '59 and his brother Mike are coordinators of and I'd like to give my experience as a young alum.
First and foremost, the retreat has brought me to a new level of understanding and appreciation for brotherhood and fatherhood. I brought my dad the first year three years ago and it was a bonding experience and one that helped him rekindle older friendships.
It can be a grand experience with godly greatness by solidarity in silence with each other's spirit. Alternatively, it was a medium for talking to each other and learning from the speakers about what it means to slow down and be sacred.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first year with Br. Robert Berger and hearing about each person's response to spirituality. The next two years allowed me to reignite my passion for compassion in community with each person that came back to break the busyness of life's business and break bread with our brotherhood.
The accommodations and communal meals are immaculate. The music and activities are immemorial presents of the present.
I highly recommend you consider joining us this year or every year, to find oneself and connect those who are near and will become dear to you as we find light in life and not fear any end that is far or near.

Luke successfully underwent his surgery last Tuesday and all went as prayed for. Luke has been doing well and as that continued, the MDs expected he would go home on Saturday. Luke's Mom, Heidi remained with him and the Family are so grateful for your prayers. This little Warrior and his beautiful smile fill one's heart. If you recall one of the pictures sent out last year, Luke really liked and was really cool with his new shades. Anthony J. "Tony" Cupo
Obituary
Anthony "Tony" J. Cupo, 87, of New City, NY passed away on August 23 surrounded by his family. In addition to his loving wife Joan and her son Christopher Estberg, he is survived by his children and their spouses Anthony and Susan Cupo, Richard and Maryann Cupo, and Maria and Tim O'Sullivan. He is also survived by his brother John and Annette Cupo and many nieces and nephews. He loved and was always delighted by his seven grandchildren Dylan, Nicholas, Matthew, Elizabeth, Christopher, Marissa and Timothy. He was predeceased by his first wife Therese M. Cupo.
He was born in the Bronx, NY in 1928 and moved to Nanuet in 1960. He was a member of St. Anthony's Church for many years where he was an usher and was involved in the designing of the new parish church building.
He had a degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College. He worked for Metro North Railroad as a construction engineer. Prior to that he worked for the Bendix Aviation Corporation and for a time was assigned overseas testing and researching aviation instruments in Morocco. He was a corporal in the army and served during the Korean War in the special services testing radar systems in Japan.
When he retired he loved working as a volunteer ranger at Rockland Lake golf course. He also loved his weekly card games with his friends, traveling and going on cruises and meeting the crew every morning at McDonalds for breakfast, lively conversation and the senior coffee discount. He met his wife Joan at Lake Nanuet where they enjoyed many summers together swimming and socializing.
In addition to spending time with his family and friends he enjoyed cooking gourmet Italian meatballs, playing bocce and dancing the tango. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks, American Legion and Nanuet Seniors.
Family will receive visitors on Tuesday, August 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, New City, NY. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, August 26 at 10am at St. Anthony's Shrine Church, Nanuet, NY. Burial to follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery.

Webb Institute announced Michael T. Martin, PE as its new Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering. Prof. Martin has over 23 years of experience as a marine electrical engineer with a broad background in electrical systems including, electrical propulsion, power generation, power distribution, lighting systems, communications, navigation and internal communication systems.
For the past five years, Prof. Martin has been the Vice President and principal engineer at Marine Design Dynamics, Inc. There, he was responsible for the daily operation and management of the New York office and supported company initiatives in marine energy conservation programs for the Military Sealift Command and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As the principal engineer, he supported multiple programs for a variety of electrical generation and distribution system design and analysis.
Before his time at Marine Design Dynamics, Prof. Martin spent 19 years at AMSEC LLC, formally M. Rosenblatt & Son, first as a project manager and senior electrical engineer and worked his way up to senior principal and electrical section manager.
Prof. Martin’s most recent projects where he served as principal electrical engineer include, the new 5400 Passenger Class of the Staten Island Ferry, Maritime Services Vessel 2.0, Military Sealift Command Energy Conservation Program, and U.S. Marine Corps Energy Modeling and Automated Load Bank Prototype. Prof. Martin also has extensive experience with commercial (shore-side) technology and interfaces with marine based platforms.
Prof. Martin’s areas of research and professional interest include shipboard energy conservation and overall modeling of shipboard energy use, shipboard automation and communication systems.
During his career, Prof. Martin has presented multiple papers at the N.Y. Metropolitan section of SNAME. He holds a Bachelors of Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College. He received his M.S. in Electrical Engineering at the New York Institute of Technology. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in New York and New Jersey as well as a certified Energy Manager from the Association of Energy Engineers, and a certified Program Management Professional from the Program Management Institute.

KINGSTON - R. Abel Garraghan of Burgevin St., Kingston died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 24, 2015 at his West Hyannisport, Mass. residence. He was 72.
He was born in Kingston, a son of the late former city Mayor Raymond W. Garraghan and his wife Ruth Abernethy Garraghan.
He graduated from Kingston High School, attended Manhattan College and graduated from Syracuse University before completing the Small Company Management Program at Harvard Business School.
A recipient of many awards, Abel will be remembered for a lifelong history of commitment to the Hudson Valley; driven by his strong belief in civic responsibility to participate and contribute, always in order to do what is best for the community. Abel has chaired or co-chaired the Benedictine Hospital Cancer Center Capital Campaign, the Kingston Waterfront Revitalization Commission, the Economic Development Zone Formation, and the Ulster County Development Corp.
Abel was a director of Hospice for Ulster and Dutchess Counties, the Kingston-Newburgh Enterprise Community, the Kingston / Ulster Development Corp. and Mid-Hudson Patterns for Progress. He represented Ulster County on the Hudson Valley Greenway Council, and served as a board member of the Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley, the Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation, the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, the Ulster County Planning Board and the Kingston Kiwanis Club. He also presided over the Wiltwyck Golf Club, is a member of the Kingston Water Board and a Director of the Rhinebeck Bank. Professionally Abel was the President and CEO of Heritagenergy.
In addition to his professional achievements, Abel's love of the Hudson Valley anchored the lifelong Kingston resident to his community, where he enjoyed golfing at Wiltwyck, hiking in the Catskills, skiing at Hunter Mountain and the polar plunge at Williams Lake. You could always find Abel on his daily walks, cherishing a drive-by conversation and then picking up the litter along the way, and of course…pointing out the potholes to the Mayor!! Abel's greatest strength in his love for the area meant he was forever reaching across the politics of the day to ""do the right thing"" for the community.
An avid outdoorsman, Abel cherished summers on Cape Cod and his friendships with the beach circle at CBA and tennis in Craigville. He and Nancy loved their winter escapes to Boca Grande, Florida and Avon, Colorado, visits to the Grand Tetons and trips to the Final Four. Abel was tremendously proud of his Irish heritage and was a faithful member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, yearly contributor to the Hooley on the Hudson celebration and in 2005 was the Grand Marshall of the Kingston St. Patrick's Day parade. Above all else, Abel Garraghan's greatest legacy will always be his family, his faith and his friends.
Loving husband of Nancy Lupton Garraghan, proud father of Patrick and Tanya Garraghan of Hurley, Kiley and Jim Shea of Loughton, England and Molly Garraghan of Denver, Colo.; brother of Julie G. Gavitt, Rumford, R.I.; grandfather of Gracie, Marin and Cian Shea, R. Gabriel Garraghan; stepgrandfather of Jordan Hulbert; and uncle to the Gavitt's and Lupton's.

Interment will follow in Hurley Cemetery.

Dooher, James M., 79 of Boca Raton passed peacefully, August 14, 2015, surrounded by family and friends.
'Jimmy' is survived by his loving wife, Karen T. Dooher of Boca Raton, brother John Dooher of Delray Beach, four children, daughters Kathryn Frederickson of Sarasota, FL and Suzanne Sanzare of Coconut Creek, sons James P. Dooher of Croton-on-Hudson, New York and Daniel Dooher of Atlanta, GA., grandchildren Matthew and Sam Paradise, Ashley Dooher Milburn, Jason and Jake Sanzare, Alexandra Dooher, and the family's latest arrival, great grandson Landon. His extended family includes step-children Kevin Kovar of California and his partner Carre Griffin and their children Joey and Emily; Tina Kovar of Asheville, NC; Joe Kovar (predeceased); step daughter-in-law Melanie Kovar of Wellington and her sons Dylan and Robert; son-in-laws Robert Frederickson and Jeffrey Sanzare; daughter-in-law Erin Dooher; grandson-in-law Marvin Milburn; son Jimmy's partner, Cheri Stafford; sister-in-law Linda Dooher; niece Shannon Dooher Park, her husband Chris Park and their four children; and first wife, Marion Keane of Delray Beach.
A native New Yorker, Jimmy was a graduate of Manhattan College (and as such a long suffering - though ever faithful - fan of the Jaspers) where he earned a degree in accounting before accepting a position with IBM in the early 1960s. It was his work with IBM that brought him - and his young family - to Boca Raton in 1969.
Beyond his loving family, Jimmy will be remembered and missed by countless friends with whom he shared the simple pleasures of life: card games on the weekends, especially 'Big Bertha' in his later days, bowling a few frames with friends, music and dancing with the love of his life, Karen…but also - and always - conversation. Jimmy was a true 'people' person. So many were drawn to him because he was such a great listener. His door was always open - literally - and not just to his friends, but to the friends of his children as well, so much so that "The Dooher House" became a well-known staging ground in Boca during the seventies and eighties for countless teenage adventures and even a few errant 'schemes.'
Kathy and Suzanne and Jimmy and Danny's friends always felt at home with Jimmy; perhaps because he would actually listen to them. In return they would listen back…Chris, Missy, Patty, Peggy, Leslie, Mark, Craig, Chad, Carl, Sherrie, Denise, Veronica…the list goes on and on.
So many will miss his easy wit, wry humor, his honest, heartfelt advice...his welcoming way. Many have commented that Jimmy missed his calling in life: that he could have been a great teacher…but then again, for many, he was.
There will be a church service in honor of Jimmy on Saturday, August 29th at 2:00pm at St. Ambrose Church in Deerfield Beach. The church is located at 380 S. Federal Highway, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation. For more info, please go to www.parkinson.org

NLRB Official Orders Count of Adjuncts’ Ballots at Manhattan College
A regional official of the National Labor Relations Board has ordered the tallying of ballots in a union election for Manhattan College’s part-time faculty members. She based her decision on a finding that such instructors do not contribute to the religious environment of the Roman Catholic college enough to be excluded from the board’s jurisdiction for First Amendment reasons.
Karen P. Fernbach, director of the NLRB’s regional office in New York, said in the decision on Wednesday that she had found no evidence that such instructors are expected to advance the college’s religious mission “other than to respect and support it.” As a result, she said, the federal board can assert jurisdiction over the union election there without treading on the college’s religious freedom under the First Amendment.
Ms. Fernbach’s decision is the latest in a wave of NLRB rulings clearing the way for union elections at religious colleges on the basis of new standards outlined by the board last year, in a case involving Pacific Lutheran University. Since that decision, regional NLRB officials have cleared the way for union elections involving adjunct faculty members at Duquesne University and Saint Xavier University.

William J. Sontag Jr., 63, of Marlborough
Marlborough – William J. “Bill” Sontag Jr., 63, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015. He was the husband of Patricia “Patty” (Kelley) Sontag, to whom he was married for 25 years.
He was born in Hackensack,N.J., the son of the late William Sr. and Johanna (Tagliabue) Sontag, and moved to Marlborough in 1986. He was a graduate of Bergen Catholic High School and Manhattan College, where he was in the ROTC program. After college he was commissioned in the United State Air Force. He served 20 years in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves, retiring with the rank of Major.
Bill worked as a Contracts Manager for many companies, including Sperry Systems in New York, Virginia, and Montreal; the Goodrich Corporation in Chelmsford; Tetratech in Framingham; and the Raytheon Corp. in Marlborough.
He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Marlborough Knights of Columbus Council #81, the AMVETS Post 1980 in Marlborough, the Air Force Association and the National Contract Management Association. He was also a longtime leader of Cub Scout Pack 31 and Boy Scout Troop 31 in Marlborough.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, William Sontag III of Marlborough; two brothers, Thomas Sontag of Bogota, N.J. and James Sontag of New Hope, Penn.; and one sister, Margaret Sontag of Virginia Beach, Va.
His funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 31, at 9 a.m., in the Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St. Burial will follow in Holy Hood Cemetery in Brookline. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Aug. 30, from 5-8 p.m., in the William R. Short and Son Funeral Home (www.shortfuneral.com), 95 West Main St., Marlborough.

Obituary
Herbert Jardine passed away suddenly of natural causes in his home in Atlanta on Wednesday, August 26, 2015.
Herb was born in New York state to Irish parents, Frederick Jardine and Agnes O'Neill Jardine. He attended Harrison High School in Harrison NY and earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College. He served as an US Air Force officer during the Korean conflict, posted in Okinawa.
Herb met his future wife, Dixie Lee Coggin of Birmingham, on a blind date. They were married for 57 years until her death. Herb and Dixie lived in Marietta GA for 35 years. The last few years of his life were spent at Lenbrook, a retirement home in Atlanta, where he was active in clubs and social life.
Herb had a career as a chemical sales manager beginning with the Diamond Alkali Company, and worked for them through various corporate changes, ultimately to Occidental Petroleum. He retired in 1992.
Herb was a devout Catholic and served as a reader at St Ann Catholic Church in Marietta. He was an active member and hospital visitor for the Mended Hearts Association and held the position of President of the local chapter for many years.
Herb is survived by his 7 children, Jim Jardine of Austin, TX, Ann Flanagan of McLean, VA, John Jardine of Douglasville, GA, Richard Jardine of Kennesaw, GA, Don Jardine of Elijay, GA, Tom Jardine of Pensacola Beach, FL, and Tim Jardine of Virginia Beach, VA, and 13 grandchildren and by his brother Dave Jardine of Sharon CT. He was predeceased by sisters Sheila Sheehan and Marianne Carpenter.
Visitation will be at HM Patterson & Sons Funeral Home at 1157 Old Canton Rd NE, Marietta Ga. on Tuesday evening, September 1 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm A funeral mass will be celebrated at St Ann Catholic Church in Marietta Ga on Wednesday, September 2 at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park on Mt Vernon Hwy in Sandy Springs, GA.

Driven by the papal encyclical, the month-long series of events tackles several current environmental issues.
As part of Manhattan College’s Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Task Force, the Office of Campus Ministry and Social Action has planned a series of “Sustainable September” events next month. The goal of Sustainable September’s activities is to increase awareness and encourage action on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the campus community.
Organizing the series is an interdisciplinary group comprised of director of Campus Ministry and Social Action Lois Harr, religious studies professors Mehnaz Afridi, Ph.D. and Kevin Ahern, Ph.D., government professor Pamela Chasek, Ph.D., and chemical engineering professor Gennaro Maffia, D.E.
Harr noted that Pope Francis’s June encyclical on climate change spurred the group to create programming that would engage students on the issues addressed. “Pope Francis noted that ‘nothing in this world is indifferent to us,’” Harr explained. “We used that as a guiding principle to organize Sustainable September.”

High Blood Pressure May Be a Choice
Eating a diet low enough in sodium (salt) can prevent the rise in hypertension risk as we age.

But if blood pressures over a hundred are associated with disease, maybe they should be considered abnormal, perhaps caused by our abnormally high salt intake—ten times more than what our bodies were designed to handle. Maybe, if we just ate a natural amount of salt, our blood pressures naturally would not go up with age, and we’d be protected. Of course, to test that theory you’d have to find a population in modern times that doesn’t use salt, or eat processed food, or go out to eat. For that, you’d have to go deep into the Amazon rainforest. Meet the Yanomamo people, a no-salt culture.
Lowest salt intake ever reported, which is to say a normal-for-our-species salt intake. And so, what happens to their blood pressure? They start out with a blood pressure of about 100 over 60 and end up with a blood pressure of about 100 over 60. Though theirs is described as a salt deficient diet, that’s like saying they have a diet deficient in Twinkies. They’re the ones, it seems, eating normal salt intakes apparently leading to truly normal blood pressures. Those in their 50’s have the blood pressure of a 20 year old. What was the percentage of the population tested that had high blood pressure? Zero, whereas elsewhere in Brazil, up to 38% of the population may be affected. The Yanomamos probably represent the ultimate human example of the importance of salt on blood pressure.

Enter Dr. Walter Kempner and his rice and fruit diet. Patients came in with blood pressures of 210 over 140 down to 80 over 60. What was the reason he could ethically withhold all modern blood pressure medications and treat with diet alone? The drugs hadn’t been invented yet—this was back in the 1940’s. Now the diet wasn’t just extremely low salt, but strictly plant-based, extremely low fat, protein, and calories, but there is no doubt that Kempner’s rice diet achieved remarkable results, and Kempner is now remembered as the person who demonstrated, beyond any shadow of doubt, that high blood pressure can often be lowered by a low enough salt diet.
Forty years ago, it was acknowledged that the evidence is very good, if not conclusive, that a low enough reduction of salt in the diet would result in the prevention of essential hypertension—that rising of blood pressure as we age— and its disappearance as a major public health problem. It looks like we knew how to stop this four decades ago. In that time, how many people have died? Today, high blood pressure may wipe out 400,000 Americans every year; 1,000 unnecessary deaths a day.

In 2012, I was diagnosed with “high blood pressure” after being rejected for a platelet donation. I was put on a drug and a diuretic. The bp quickly dropped back to “normal”-ish on the high side.
I really got the message when I went for my routine eye exam. (I NEED my eyesight.) The eye doc said: “Is your high blood pressure under control?” What! I asked how he knew and he said my eyes showed damage. Arghhhhhh!
Recently I began dating again. (Yeah, you can stop snickering now. Old dogs can be lovable. So too fat old white guy injineers.) To a pescatarian. (Not Presbyterian!) Someone who eats no meat but does eat fish. So naturally, when we go out, I’m a pescatarian too. And I noticed that my bp was going down. So much so, that the phlebotomists (i.e., tech who take my platelets) and my doc all remarked about the change.
(I was 210/180 when rejected. Down to 140/110 after drug intervention. Now 100/65 with pescatarian diet and some very little additional exercise as measure by my Fitbit.)
Then, I listen to this video and maybe my problem all along is salt?
I love salt. Salt on my pizza with my beer is a must have.
Argh!
In 1940, it was known — proven — that salt is the problem.

The packages should have a skull and cross bones. Labeled like cigarettes.
Hope this helps my fellow Jaspers. It’s been a modest epiphany for me.
