Millionaire Hot Seat winner buys every student at her school new shoes
12:00 PM Saturday Jul 18, 2015

*** begin quote ***

An Australian teacher who won $20,000 on a TV game show will buy new shoes for the students at her school.

Bri Dredge, 32, who was on Millionaire Hot Seat on Thursday night, has decided to use her winnings to help pupils at Yuille Park Community College in Ballarat.

"I walked into school and every student in the whole school has given me a hug and said thank you," Dredge told AAP on Friday.

"The look on their faces was worth all the money that I won."

All 200 students will receive a pair of sturdy leather shoes to get them through Ballarat's long, cold winter.

Wow.

An impressive act of charity.

I’m sure there were other things she “wanted”. Perhaps even “needed”.

(I’d assert that saving for one’s “retirement” is a valid “need”!)

Makes my own efforts at charity look lame by comparison.

That’s why I’m sure I’ll need one of my fellow Jaspers to wedge open a side door to Heaven at the Final Judgment.

Laugh, if there is a “side door” or any “door” at all.

Nice act charity by this lady.

Maybe it will inspire others.

COMMENT: Costello, Donald (MC1954) is mad too

2015-Aug-09

Donald Costello commented on ENDNOTE: Does "legalized same-sex marriage" eclipse all other issues?

2015-Aug-08 https://www.lewrockwell.com/2015/07/laurence-m-vance/evangelicals-are-outraged-at-same-sex-marriage/ Where Is the …

So you and millions of Americans are outraged …we use to say MAD. And I have had enough. The difference between us Americans is that each of us would rank order our madness differently. I suspect similar rank ordering could be attributed to those in the same 1). Age group; 2). Sex 3.) Part of the country 4.) economic class and perhaps even 5.)religious persuasion.

Where we would have a large scattering of opinions about what caused this Sunmai of outrage.

If you want to gather that opinion that's a great effort and I bet us old Jasper could give it a good go.

[JR: My gripe with Gooferment “marriage” licenses is that they exist at all. A racist invention to keep black me from marrying white women has now extended into all aspects of the tax code and “benefits”. “Benefits” are the product of FDR’s wage and price controls. Which has now been the “camel’s nose” into Obama/SCOTUS-care and the tax code. Remember when “Social Security Insurance” was sold to Americans as “not for identification purposes”. “barbara streisand”! I’m mad about the whole mess that “we” collectively have made of the Dead Old White Guys’ “experiment”! I’m moving to New Hampshire as part of the Free State Project to enter politics with my fellow little L libertarians. “We” are going to turn one state around. Maybe even secede! And roll back the tyranny of the political class. ]

John C. Andrews
(1936 - 2015)
Obituary

MECHANICSBURG - John C. Andrews, 79, of Mechanicsburg passed away peacefully at home on Saturday (August 8, 2015) from cancer.

His loving wife of 58 years and children surrounded him with love and prayers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday (August 11, 2015) at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 1 Peter Drive, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Viewing will be held Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg. A Rosary Service will be at 7:45 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be held privately at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

John was born on Long Island to William McKinley Andrews and Marcella Souhan February 3, 1936. He met Barbara Liszcz at the age of 14. They wed in 1957, upon his graduation from Manhattan college.

John held managerial and executive positions in risk management and industrial relations in the N.Y. Metropolitan Area including the F&M Schaeffer Brewing Co. during periods of intense labor unrest in the late 1960's and 1970's, where his talents as a mediator bridged several contentious labor disputes with the Teamsters.

John's childhood years in the New York Finger Lakes region inspired him to return to his family's origins in the late 1970's to raise his children and begin an entrepreneurial career where he built a successful insurance brokerage in Waterloo New York. He served the community as a Village Justice while residing in Waterloo.

In the late 1980's John returned to the insurance industry where he held management roles with the Nationwide companies ultimately calling Hampden Township and Saint Katherine Drexel Parish his home for the last quarter century. A devoted parishioner, he found joy in bringing holy communion to the sick.

He is survived by his children Susan Bachman, John Andrews, Jill Andrews, R. Brian Andrews, and Stacy Williams Andrews; "Poppy" was adored by his 11 grandchildren, Sean, Shannon, Patrick, William, Phoebe, Roth, Audrey, Jewell, Roland, Ella, and Maddie. He was predeceased on June 8 by his beloved son, Col. JBLOGGER: Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) on Kelly, Jack [MC1968]

2015-Aug-09

http://keywestlou.com/jack-kelly/

Jack Kelly

My undergraduate school was Manhattan College. Over the past few years, Jack Kelly and I have run into each other at the Chart Room. Jack a Manhattan grad also. A bit younger than me. He graduated in 1968. I, 1957.

The Manhattan College thing provided instant bonding.

Jack once had a home on Cudjoe Key. Long gone. In recent years, he has been taking a week here and there to visit Key West.

Jack was at the Chart Room last night. Always good to see him. We talked a bit about Manhattan and some of the grads. One or two we both know. Then Jack surprised me. He is returning to Key West full time.

Jack is buying a home in Bayview. He is also in the process of closing on three restaurants. That’s returning big time!

One is the former Finnegan’s Wake. Last operated for several days as Backspace. Jack will be reopening it as Cayheuso. A tapas place.

Another is World of Beer. Near Sloppy Joe’s. Jack plans on naming the new establishment Jack Kelly’s Citizen. Such vanity! Not really. Turns out the location was the first home of the Key West Citizen.

The third place is on Front Street. Across from Two Guys. Not Island Dogs. Next door to Island Dogs. An empty two story commercial building.

The name of the new enterprise escapes me. Its purpose not. Jack intends it to be family friendly. In addition to food, etc., the restaurant will provide all kinds of games for the kiddies to busy themselves with. Even the parents.

Jack is retired Air Force. He presently lives in Washington, DC. He remains active with the Arnold Air Society.

Welcome back, Jack! Good luck!

Jack and I hung together for a few hours at the Chart Room. While there, I met Devin Callahan. A snow bird. He is in Key West frequently. Surprising we had not met before.

2015-Aug-10

Good Evening All,

About 10 days ago, I asked for your prayers for a little fellow that had had some complicated heart surgery and was not doing well. That was on July 31, 2015. Little James, three years old, is not doing well. He is still in ICU with a lot of restrictions and things keep going off track requiring Emergency attention. Little James is a fighter. The MDs at N.Y. Presbyterian Hospital are on the case and little James is on their case. We pray for the Doctors to get the problems under control and resolved quickly. This little fellow needs to be home with his parents, his little Sister and his Grandparents. Please raise the volume once again. Thank you. God Bless.

JHQ: Retreat 9/18-20/2015

2015-Aug-13

July 2015

Dear Brothers in Christ,

Life can be a flurry of activity. There always seems to be something to do. And just when we think we have a moment to ourselves, the phone rings or we receive another instant message. All of a sudden, the cycle of activity begins again. Experts tell us that it is critical to take time for ourselves - break away from the flurry of activity and daily routines so we can reflect, give thanks, pray, meditate, appreciate, and think about our purpose in life. The 24th annual Manhattan College Reality Retreat provides the perfect setting to do this and seek direction on this year's spiritual quest,

"Trust in the lord...He will make our paths straight" Proverbs 3:5&6

For the fifth year, the Manhattan College Businessmen's Reality Retreat will be hosted at the Bishop Molloy Passionist House in Jamaice Estates in Queens, NY on September 18, 19 and 20. The retreat planning committee has lined up engaging and thoughtful speakers, insightful questions for discussion groups, as well as Reconciliation, Anointing, and The Eucharist - our "Spiritual Trifecta".

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends, network and enjoy camaraderie with men like yourself. Many Silicon Valley executives spend thousands of dollars for a similar setting and experience. Our cost is a fraction of their cost - only $195 (pay by check or credit card) which includes all meals and a private room.

For those in attendance last year, we look forward to your return. If it's been awhile, we welcome your return. And of course, we're always looking for new attendees! The retreat is open but not limited to Manhattan College alumni. So feel free to invite your male friends, co-workers and family members.

Please complete and return the registration form to reserve your spot today, or call the retreat house directly at (718) 739-1229, you'll be glad you did!

Pankey’s career taking off after slow start
By Patrick McCormack

*** begin quote ***

Life continues to get better for Ashton Pankey after a rough first year in his hometown.

His career did not go the way he wanted it to prior to the 2012-13 season, including losing his freshman season at Maryland to injury. Pankey transferred from Maryland to Manhattan College in 2012 to be closer his family, especially his mother, Persuasion Branch, who was ill.
Vivaldi

“It was horrible,” the Bronx native said. “It was a tough year for me and my family. I transferred back home because my mom was sick. I wanted to be closer to home and family so they can watch me play.”

The 6-foot-10 forward was able to rebound after his off year and became a key member of the Jaspers by contributing to two MAAC Championships and berths into the NCAA tournament. His mother’s health has also improved.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Littlest Jasper Luke

2015-Aug-15

Good Morning All,

Our prayers are requested for our Littlest Jasper, Luke. Luke will be going in for surgery this Tuesday, August 18, 2015. It is surgery that is required on Luke from time to time and the Doctors are confident that the plate being put into his hip will be fine. We want to make sure that this is the case so please raise the volume as we pray that all goes well with no complications for this little fighter. Luke is expected to be in Hospital for three or so days if all goes as expected. Please keep his parents, Heidi and Peter and his Grandparents Anne and George in your prayers as well. Thank you. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: The politics of “climate change”

What’s The Carbon Footprint of The PopeMobile?
By Eric Peters
Eric Peters Autos
August 1, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Because “global warming.”

Er… make that “climate change.”

The new – more general – term for the allegedly human-caused alteration of the planet’s weather. “Global warming” had to go because global cooling was also inconveniently happening.

This was becoming globally embarrassing.

“Climate change” is much better, because it always fits. The climate is constantly changing. And would do so (and has done so) regardless of the presence of man on this Earth. But why not just blame man for it?

*** and ***

The fact that this re-branding was necessary says more about the politics of “climate change” than its scientific validity. Despite the near-unanimity of media Tele-Prompter readers and politicians, experts in the field (as opposed to “environmentalists,” a non-degreed title anyone can claim) are far less certain about the assertion that recent changes are abnormal, much less the result of human activity – and so reluctant to endorse the imposition of extreme (and expensive) government regulations and taxes on billions of humans that will impoverish them but not the elites (including the Pope) whose super-sized carbon footprints will continue to tromp the Earth.

*** and ***

Pope Francis seems to be a nice man – but he is no more a scientific expert than Al Gore.

And while both the Pope and Al Gore have bought-in to “climate change,” neither of them have stopped shopping. Or traveling. Both of which – according to their own public scoldings – are environmental no-no’s that ought to be discouraged.

*** end quote ***

I remember in the 70’s we were all going to freeze.

Now we’re all going to bake.

And, no matter WHAT the problem, the answer is more Gooferment!

Sorry, but “experts” should prove their point by “walking the walk”.

Mother Teresa, Ron Paul, JFK, Ronald Regan — for all their flaws — were worth listening too.

Today’s pundits are just getting rich.

Argh!
