That’s “race relations”.

I don’t like to praise Hollywood much.

But occasionally they get one right.

This applies to this picture.

"America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free"." --- President Andrew Shepherd played by Michael Douglas in "The American President" (1995)

We may disagree with another’s beliefs, but we still must “Love Our Neighbor”!

This picture gives me hope.

COMMENT: Costello, Donald (MC1954) on addiction

2015-Jul-26

Costello, Donald (MC1954)

Submitted on 2015/07/25 at 9:07 pm

I have been involved with 12 step programs and related addiction program a for over 35 years.

Alcohol has been a problem on both sides of my Irish/ Polish ancestors for over 100 years.

35 years ago when I went to treatment and AA it worked for most people my age… maybe not the first time. Some got sober with AA alone without treatment.

During the next 35 years lots of things happened. A larger and larger percent of those who are addicts today are dually addicted. A large part of the second side of the addiction is illegal drugs… not just the famous ones. Their are other duals.

I felt a bit short with AA in the beginning. I felt hampered not being able to name my higher power as Jesus Christ and our Church. From this need I found Calyx a mostly Catholic organization whose members find their sobriety through the fellowship of AA but whose main purpose is to name our higher power as we know him and this fellowship aims to help members increase the level of spirituality in their lives. In have founded three Calix chapters in the USA and to many of us it have not only saved our own lives and souls but those of our children and friends as well.

For the last 35 years I have found AA and Calix to meet my everyday and long term needs.

BUT times have changed in a number of areas. For one Treatment Centers now run round $15000 a month. Some no longer follow the 12 step approach. There is an enormous battle between treatment centers to sell the efficacy of their treatment plans.

My recent experience ( over the last five years) makes me question almost any 28 day program. The young people I work with get very little out of the first 28 days of treatment. They can hardly concentrate and have a tough time with regular sleeping. Some new more gradual approach is needed. This requires get patience on the part of parents Andover ones who want a quick fix.

I am wring a book now entitled “ A Systems Approach to Addiction”. It is the most complex system I have ever worked with. The ability to help get an addicts “brain” back into a normal homeostasis balance is just now being investigated. Anyone who has children in trouble here needs help and guidance so as to not owe their own minds. There are a lot of bad guys here. Any marketing plans aimed at getting people hooked on anything is a dangerous weapon in the hands of the greedy and unscrupulous. We know how our local breweries and the liquor business went about this during WWII. But today it is commonplace in many of the substance sellers that our trying to hook our children

There is in addition to Calyx great help out there from our Church. If you aren’t familiar with Matt Talbot google him and hear all about his exemplary life after having Mary and Jesus help him get rid of the terrible thrust he had for alcohol. St. Maximilian Kolbe is also the Patrin saint of addicts. He has answered my prayers. My wife Mary gas written a book on the Life of Mat Talbot”. If you call or write I’ll send you one.

If you want to talk on the phone call me at 402-472-5005 at the University of Nebraska -Lincoln. If I am not in I leave a number and I’ll call you back.

I have given AA and Cali talks all over. In fact I gave one at Manhattan about two years ago. I plan to give one there again later this year.

St. John the Baptiste de LaSalle Pray for us! Live Jesus in our hearts …Forever!

Clock Is Ticking for Time Inc.’s CEO
Joe Ripp pushes online video, ‘native’ ads and ‘big data’ to save the company Henry Luce built; ‘slow and steady death’
By Jeffrey A. Trachtenberg
July 27, 2015 10:39 p.m.

*** begin quote ***

In April, Time Inc. Chief Executive Joe Ripp flew to Procter & Gamble Co. ’s headquarters in Cincinnati determined to reverse an ominous trend.

Like many other marketers, the consumer-products giant is shifting more of its advertising online. P&G, the world’s largest advertiser, cut its print spending on Time Inc.-owned publications by a third last year, according to ad-tracking firm Kantar Media.

Mr. Ripp’s message: We have what you’re looking for. He outlined Time Inc.’s plans to invest aggressively in digital media, including online video, and to use “big data” it collects about readers to help target ads, say people familiar with the meeting. A spokesman declines to say how P&G responded.

Since taking the top job at Time Inc. nearly two years ago, the 63-year-old Mr. Ripp has been racing to reinvent what was once one of America’s most powerful media companies. He also is trying to counter the narrative that Time Inc. is a lumbering, old-guard print publisher unable to adapt to the digital age.

*** and ***

The son of a former production chief at aircraft manufacturer Grumman Corp., Mr. Ripp worked his way through Manhattan College stocking supermarket shelves at night. Now he flies his own twin-engine Piper Navajo and owns a vacation home in Nantucket, Mass., where he is vice commodore of the Great Harbor Yacht Club.

A shock of white hair is the most visible sign of Mr. Ripp’s long history at Time Inc. He joined the magazine group in 1985 as assistant comptroller and became Time Warner’s finance chief in 1999.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for two

2015-Aug-01

Good Morning All,

Our prayers are needed for a little fellow, another of God's Gifts. His Grandmother, Mary Beth, a friend from Church, has asked for our prayers. He has been operated upon to begin to remedy the problem of being born with one less Ventricle in his heart. He is at Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Mary Beth has told us that he is not doing well, I ask you to raise the volume for this little fellow and his Family as we pray that the MDs resolve this major issue and return him to his Family. There will be further operations as he gets older as the MDs work to make him whole. Thank you.

I have heard from Nancy Maksomski. Her Mom is slowly doing better, is still in a good deal of pain. Please keep Mrs. Maksomski in your prayers as we pray that the MDs are able to resolve what is wrong and eliminate her pain. Thank you. God Bless.

2015-Aug-01

Good Morning All,

I ask for your continued prayers for our Niece, Heather, this beautiful and good young woman, 39, two small children, is close to being called home. We are praying for a miracle but I think now that that miracle will manifest itself in her Husband Cameron being able to deal with what seems to be inevitable. Please keep Heather, Cameron, their Children, Grace and Reid, in your prayers. Prayer works. Thank you. God Bless.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has prayers for three

2015-Aug-01

Good Morning All,

I ask for your prayers for the Son of one of our regular attendees at our Manhattan College Retreat. Damian's Son, Philip, has embarked on a two year Commitment with the Peace Corps in West Africa. We pray that God watches over Philip, keeps him safe and Blesses the good work he will be doing.

Mike McEneney asks for our prayers for Ann C. Who is in Rehab recovering from Heart Surgery. We pray for Ann's complete recovery free of complications.

Mike also asks for prayers for Joyce and her Daughter who are on a trip to some African Nations. We pray for their safety and a safe return.

Thank You. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: Today I saw up close and personal the results of America's "drug policy"

2015-Aug-01

At risk of being repetitive and boring, I’m going to repost something from my personal blog. I feel very strongly about this and, as a pro-life / pro-choice little L libertarian, I am enraged by this tragic — in the sense of avoidable — loss of life due to our “national” stupidity.

As a Hail Mary attempt for a miracle, at his Mom’s request, I asked Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) to include it on his prayer list. As a fourteen year vet of the local First Aid Squad, and all my personal medical experiences with my now passed wife, I know that the issue was essentially over on Wednesday when it took over forty minutes to revive him. Kudos and credit to all the dedicated medical people who did there best to give him a chance to survive.

That being said, it REAFFIRMS my strong belief that had we a national drug policy focused on “drugs” as a medical problem and not a legal one, Anthony might have had treatment earlier in his life and go on to live a long healthy and happy life.

Please read my personal RANT and join me in insisting that we end the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs” immediately.

Be interesting to see what an illegal drug Kingpin and his gang does when there is no such thing as an “illegal drug”. Walmart can put them all out of business!

Argh!

RANT: Today I saw up close and personal the results of America's "drug policy"
2015-Jul-19

Today, a Mom, could have been any troubled young person’s Mom, unplug her child from life support.

The result of a drug overdose.

It wasn’t the first time, or the first warning signal, or the only time, but this was the last time.

When will “We, The Sheeple” wise up?

Just like during (alcohol) “Prohibition”, people were blinded, sickened, and killed by “moonshine”.

Making a prohibited substance “legal” MEANS clean known quantity of drugs.

It ALSO makes them so “less cool”.

Portugal demonstrates the way from criminalizing a basic human failing and turning it into a “medical” issue.

Unfortunately, the Drug Dealers, the “police”, and the politicians are all incentivized to keep the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs” going regardless of the collateral damage — killing the youth, maiming those that survive, and scaring some with criminal records that they can never “outgrow” — allowing a flourishing “drug culture”, made “kool” by music, celebrities, and pop culture — and destroying our civil liberties in the process.

Now that I have time on my hands, I will never accept Drug Prohibition as a rational policy.

I hope that anyone who reads this NEVER votes for any politician who doesn’t promise on Day One of his term to eliminate the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs”! Maybe one politician can’t do it, but they could have the courage of Doctor Ron Paul, aka Doctor No, who never voted other than his conscience.

And, I mean this at every level of the Gooferment. I don’t care if you’re running for dog catcher; you have to tell me how you are going to end this national / global insanity.

I’ve always felt this way since the 60’s, but now in my old age, I see its futility and stupidity.

Requiescat In Pacem, young Anthony.

And I hope your Mom finds peace.

Dona Nobis Pacem
