POSITRACTION: Tiny House for Homeless Woman

Man Builds Tiny House for Homeless Woman Sleeping in the Dirt
Photo of the Day
by Helaina Hovitz - April 27, 2015

2015 May 03 tiny house

*** begin quote ***

A 60-year-old homeless woman named Smokie has been sleeping outside in the dirt a few doors down from a man named Elvis Summers.

Most mornings, she stops by Elvis’s Los Angeles apartment and asks if he has any recyclables for her. Through these conversation, they struck up a friendship.

One morning, Elvis saw a news article about a man in Oakland who has been making tiny houses out of discarded material. He was inspired to put off paying a few bills so he could buy the lumber and hardware to make Smokie a brand new shelter. It took him five days to build, and now, for the first time in ten years, Smokie has a place to hang the sign, ‘Home Sweet Home.’

*** and ***

The materials, including two locks on the front door and sturdy wheels for moving it around, cost him about $500.

*** and ***

Thus, the spikey-haired do-gooder has launched “Mythpla” (My Tiny House Project LA) with a crowdfunding campaign for those who want to help, on GoFundMe.

*** end quote ***

Now I’m not sure that this is the way to solve the epidemic of “homeless” in our country.

But I can not fault this man for doing something.

From a strategic POV, I don’t think that we want this to be our answer. “Real” tiny houses have plumbing.

I can’t imagine the reaction of a homeowner to having this “parked” outside their house.

And, of course, it must violate some diktat.

If the Gooferment would end it’s “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs” and stop trying to take over “charity”, then maybe the Churches could fulfill their mission. Money taken in taxes doesn’t get donated to the Salvation Army.

But, we are our “Brother’s keeper” regardless of how much the Gooferment interferes.

Food for thought:

Just attended a great workshop about human trafficking at Manhatten (sic) College in New York. The focus was on how we can all do our part to pay attention to how are products are made - at every level in the supply chain. In case your or your child is in the market for a college, did you know that Manhattan College is one of a growing list of colleges that is a Fair Trade Campus? How cool is that? Love that...and it was a very nice campus, too.

Webcast: Contain, Identify, and Control: Introducing Invincea Advanced Endpoint Protection 5

Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 2pm ET

Presenters:

Michael Applebaum, VP of Marketing, Invincea
Jim Rutherford, Director of Product Management, Invincea

Security teams today are looking for a next-generation endpoint approach to stopping new attacks and identifying existing compromises. This led Invincea to develop our ground-breaking new solution – Invincea Advanced Endpoint Protection 5 – which provides integrated capabilities to Contain, Identify, and Control targeted attacks.

Expanding on Invincea’s proven containerization capabilities, our new solution combines the visibility and control of an endpoint solution with the crowdsourced intelligence of cloud analysis. It includes Invincea’s Cynomix cyber genome analysis technology, an advanced malware analysis solution based on 4 years of DARPA-funded R&D.

By using a single lightweight agent to prevent new threats and detect existing ones, you can also consolidate endpoint technologies and reduce the total cost of endpoint protection.

Be the first to see Invincea’s new solution, as we cover:

Today’s endpoint security challenges
How Invincea has taken a unique approach to containment, identification, and control
Invincea’s capabilities for stopping advanced attacks and finding existing compromises

John F. Forner, Jr.
(October 15, 1921 - May 11, 2015)

Bonita Springs, FL – John F. Forner, Jr., a longtime resident of Menands and the Capital District, passed away on Monday, May 11, 2015 at his home in Bonita Springs in Florida.

He is the beloved husband of Nancy Smith Forner; father of John (Karen) Forner, III of Menands, Christine Tafralian of Altadena, CA, Dr. Leonard (Cathy) Forner of Simsbury, CT, Peter (Gladys) Forner of Harlem, GA, Bonnie (Paul) Reuscher of Spencerport, NY, Frederick Fleitz of Oswego, NY and Wendy Fleitz of Latham; also survived by 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Mr. Forner was for many years a practicing attorney in the city of Albany. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, Class of 1939, where he has been for many years the oldest living ex-Cadet Colonel of the CBA Regiment. He was a graduate of Manhattan College in NYC where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in January of 1943 and in January of 1948, he graduated from Albany Law School where he received his LLB, JD degree with honors.

In 1942, Mr. Forner enlisted in the US Army and was called to active duty in January 1943. He spent 27 months overseas in an ordnance and then in an engineering outfit in the 3rd Corps of the First Army in all of its campaigns from Normandy to Central Europe. On his campaign ribbons, he was entitled to wear five battle stars. He served honorably until his discharge in November of 1945.

He served as Wilson’s personal counsel in the Assembly until 1958. When Mr. Wilson became Lieutenant Governor in January of 1959, Mr. Forner stayed with him as counsel until 1973 when Mr. Wilson was elevated to Governor of the State of New York upon the resignation of Gov. Nelson Rockefeller. Mr. Forner served Governor Wilson during his two years as Governor and served Attorney General Louis Leftkowitz as an Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Real Property Bureau from 1975 until his retirement from state service at the end of 1976.

He then returned to private practice in Albany until his full retirement in 1987. He became a resident of Lake George in 1994 until selling his Lake George residence in 2003.

Ex-Soviet spy living in America comes out 25 years after Cold War
May 12, 2015 by Joseph Fitsanakis

*** begin quote ***

Soon after arriving in the US, in 1978, he acquired a social security card using a birth certificate issued for Jack Philip Barsky, an American child who had died at the age of 10 in the Washington, DC, area. He told everyone that he was born in Orange, New Jersey. He eventually enrolled in a Manhattan college, where he studied computer systems. His first job out of college was as a computer programmer for Metropolitan Life Insurance, commonly known as MetLife. While there, he stole computer code for the KGB, including “a very prominent piece of industrial software still in use today”, which was “helpful to the Soviet Union”, he says. Barsky traveled back to East Germany often, using a series of false passports. During one of those visits, he married his longtime girlfriend and had a son with her. But he also married in the United States, and had two children with his wife, so as to better blend into American society. The two families knew nothing of each other’s existence.

Conversations with Basel Committee Secretary General William Coen
May 13, 2015

*** begin quote ***

The quality of an organization’s leader and the tone he sets are the most important predictors of whether the organization will reach its objectives. The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision is in a very good place with William Coen, the Basel Committee’s new secretary general. I gained invaluable insights into his exceptional abilities and experience to lead the Basel Committee during a couple of interviews and by observing the pace at which the committee has been releasing important guidelines and finesse existing ones since he took over.

The Basel Committee is lucky to have a leader who is familiar, not only with the nuts and bolts of banking, but also knows the intricacies of being a bank examiner and is experienced in crafting policies. It is extremely rare to find a professional who has been in all these different roles.

Coen brings a long history of an incredible work ethic to his new role at the Basel Committee. Coen had a great role model in his hard working mother who became one of the most senior female executives in Major League Baseball, including several years working for the New York Mets, all while raising Bill and his two older sisters.

After graduating from Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York, Coen joined the management trainee program at a large NYC-based savings and loan. Even though he was also working on his Masters in Business Administration at Fordham University during the evenings, he was promoted quickly and became a banker in consumer lending.

He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy as Valedictorian in 1938. He then went on to Manhattan College and subsequently St. Bernard's Seminary in Rochester, NY. He graduated as a priest from St. Bernard's Seminary in 1945 and said his first Mass at his home parish, Most Holy Rosary Church, in Syracuse, NY. He was a priest for 25 years. He served as a priest in Utica, NY and Binghamton, NY. He was also the Chaplain at Marcy State Hospital. John left the priesthood in 1972 where he subsequently married his wife, Thelma Deneff who predeceased him in 2005. After he married, John moved to Staten Island with his family, where he was the Associate Director of Arthur Kill Prison for many years. He was devoted to his church, Our Lady of the Star of the Sea, where he served as Deacon.

John was passionate about social issues. He worked for the poor and underserved all of his life. He collaborated with Father Daniel Berrigan to end the war in Vietnam in the 1960s. John loved his family and golf. It was said by his friends that they never moved John from parish to parish but rather from golf course to golf course. He will be remembered as a man of character and purpose.

Besides his wife, Thelma, and his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Robert Stack and his stepdaughter, Susan Deneff. He is survived by his brother, Dr. William F. Stack; his stepsons, Daniel (Sue) Deneff and Michael (Mary) Deneff and his stepdaughter, Roxanne (Nick) Brunsman; his grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His family would like to thank all of the staff at the Nottingham for all of their wonderful and compassionate care of Jack over the past few years.

1:07 PM (4 hours ago)

Good Afernoon All,

Patricia Flaherty '98 BS, a good friend and member of our Prayer Group and Alumni Board has shared some sad news and asks for our prayers. Mr. Bill Kelly, a colleague of Patricia's Dad, has told him that he lost his only Son, Gregory, in a car accident this week on his way to work. Gregory was 42 and leaves behind his Wife and two Children. This Family needs our prayers and to hear our voice.

Trish also asks for our prayers for a Classmate of hers from Manhattan College. Amy lost her Husband in a car accident this week as well. Though Trish did not know Amy's Husband, Christian, in knowing Amy, Trish can imagine the type of man he must have been. Christian leaves behind Amy and their two young Children.

This is a terrible time for these bereaved Families. We pray that God in His Mercy gives them the strength to get through these so very dark days and somehow find peace in God's Love as He welcomes these two good men into the Kingdom of heaven. Thank you. God Bless.

Don and JR, thanks for the memories . I too define May 15th as the feast day of the De La Salle Christian Brothers. I was fortunate to have had them as teachers at Good Shepherd (1961), Manhattan Prep (1965) and Manhattan College (1969). As time goes by you realize how important they were for so many of us

COMMENT: Costello, Donald [MC1954] comments about poor and terribly mannered young men

Donald Costello commented on COMMENT: Twomey, John J. (MC1969) remembers GSS, MP, and Alma Mater

Sometimes I define the date the world changed is when so few men were becoming Christian Brothers that the Brothers sold Barrytown to the Moonies.

How will the world have to change that young men see a vocation in becoming a brother taking vows of Poverty, Charity and Obedience? After taking vows and going through Barrytown, they then took a job where they taught rather poor and terribly mannered young men while they got the chance to live in a cell and ask permission to keep the $10.00 one of us gave them.

Thank God we got the chance to know that kind of Catholic man and that they were smart enough to teach us things we would never have learned in the secular world.

"A minute for the room?" "Sure." "Can you empty your pockets?" "Yes? Why?" "I'm not sure, but I'd appreciate it."

Brother Kevin emptied the two pockets of his cassock – three quarters, a nickel, and two dimes scotched taped together, a handkerchief, and a rosary. No keys!

"And what does the intelligence chief glean from that?" "Not much, other than you knew all along about the rosary stretch gimmick all along."

"Correct. Maybe you DO have 200 brain cells? Can you tell me why nothing was ever said? But first, interpret the coins and the cloth, Oh wise one." With playful sarcasm.

After a long minute, "no clue" was the response. "Ahh, my budding Sherlock, or is that Chief 'I can't see because my eyes are closed'? The coins are for the phone in case we have to call a Classmate's family from a hospital, or take the subway home from that hospital. Every teaching Brother and Nun has a special exemption from the vow of poverty for that dollar in change. And, it's really not 'ours'. We put it on the mantle in the Brother's residence when we enter. The handkerchief is much more subtle."

[JR: I’ll leave the handkerchief for everyone to figure out. Or spend two bucks on the Kindle edition to find out. Brother Kevin in Manhattan Prep pulled this one on me. Laugh! Hence, Brother Kevin is featured in my book. Laugh!]

ENDNOTE: Superstorm Sandy demonstrates Gooferment incompetence

2015-May-16

http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/homepage-feature/item/81293--two-and-a-half-years-after-superstorm-sandy-its-far-from-over-for-some?linktype=related_articlepage

APRIL 29, 2015 NJ SPOTLIGHT
2-1/2 years after Superstorm Sandy, it's far from over

*** begin quote ***

Robin Buck remembers how excited he was when he was first approved for a state grant to fix his flooded Long Branch, NJ, home.

“It’s like hitting the lottery!” he said. “I was telling everybody. It was the best thing that ever happened to me, and that’s the truth. They were going to lift my home, and they’re paying me to do so? That is great!”

After spending $43,000 on repairs to make his house livable, he signed his grant paperwork last fall, then disconnected the utilities, handed over his keys, and moved out in early November so his state-appointed contractor could raise his home to protect it from future storms. The whole process, he was told, would take less than 90 days.

*** and ***

But after months of delays, he grew increasingly worried. When he finally went back to check on his house last month, his worst fears had come true. The pipes had burst, and without electricity to run the sump pump, his basement had filled with several feet of water.

Two-and-a-half years after Sandy, the storm seems like ancient history to many people who don’t live near the coast or know someone who was personally affected. But for thousands of displaced residents like Robin Buck, the recovery is still a work in progress. To date, just 10 percent of homeowners in New Jersey’s largest grant program have finished construction and moved back into their homes. They’ve faced a variety of stumbling blocks, from contractor issues to battles with their insurance companies to state delays. And many of those problems continue to this day. State officials note that the pace of recovery has quickened in recent months, but all parties agree that it still has a long way to go.

*** end quote ***

Yeah, I know you’re all tired of hearing about how immoral, ineffective, and inefficient the Gooferment is.

But permit me another GREAT example of it.

Remember the FEMA trailers in NOLA after Katrina that all were worthless.

Here we have a similar example.

The Federal Gooferment has nationalized “flood insurance”. Hence they are in the middle of it. As if dealing with an insurance company might be hard enough, then throw in a few levels of politicians and bureaucrats and it’s a mess.

I was lucky. My house in Seaside was inches away from serious damage. I lost a hot water heaters and some electrical wiring that was missed when I had the place rewired. But, I got NOTHING for my 30 years of “flood insurance” payments because it was not my primary residence. (Talk about fraud. Why did I bother paying it?)

So, anytime anyone says how much we need Gooferment, please remember all it’s GREAT “successes”!

Argh!
