to know this woman and her family, and so honored she asked me to

This story just puts me in AWE of the Lord’s wisdom to give
children to women.
I was told in survival school: “Never go near a bear cub for any
reason”. This story illustrated that wisdom.

Virginia Beach - Captain Joseph Thomas Small, SC, USN (ret.) passed away on 14 April 2015 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, surrounded by his family, at the age of ninety-two. Captain Small was born in New York City in 1923, the son of Emma and Robert Small. He graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1941; attended Manhattan College; and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on June 6, 1945. He was married in Annapolis on that date to Eileen Mary Gray.
Captain Small's first duty station was gunnery officer on the Battleship U.S.S. Missouri (BB-63). After World War II, he graduated from the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School in Bayonne, New Jersey, and was stationed, during the Korean War, as supply officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. Rodman (DD-456/DMS-21). He also served on the Destroyer Tender U.S.S. Hamul (AD-20) and in the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP). During the Cuban Missile Crisis, he served as supply officer of the Repair Ship U.S.S. Amphion (AR-13). During the Vietnam era, he served as supply officer of Naval Air Station, Norfolk, and Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Virginia. He also served on various Navy and joint service staffs and bureaus in London, UK, and Washington, DC. His last duty station was supply officer of Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, Puerto Rico. He retired from the Navy in September, 1975.
After retirement from the Navy, Captain Small joined United Services Life Insurance Company. In 1981, he was appointed Regional Manager for the Norfolk, Virginia Beach Region. He served on the company's Field Advisory Committee during the period 1980-1984. After retirement from the company, he and his wife spent many years travelling the world. He had a passion for fine wine and enjoyed collecting wine and donating from his collection to charitable wine auctions held in Napa Valley, California, and Naples, Florida.
Captain Small was a member of the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club, Virginia Beach, Virginia; the New York Athletic Club; the Sunset Crest Beach Club, Barbados; and Lago Mar, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Captain Small is survived by his wife of seventy years, Eileen Mary Small; his five children, Joseph Small, Jr., John Small, Christine Carman, Maureen Hooker, and James Small; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Margaret Mary Dwyer.
A service will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium on 6 May 2015 at 11:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to the United States Naval Academy Foundation. Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.

On this glorious day where many of us are surrounded by cherished little ones making their First Communion and their Families, good news is the order of the day. Jen and Tom McCarthy have been in touch and Jen tells us that Joe is now in Morristown Memorial Hospital and continues to improve. Jen shared that Joe is now speaking to them. Great news. I cannot imagine that Joe can't just yet be accused of being a Chatterbox but improvement is another battle won. Jen and the Family thank you all and ask that those prayers " Keep On Coming." Please keep the volume up. We pray that God in His Mercy hear our prayers. Thank you. God Bless.

Manhattan College is planning to expand its campus within the next 10 years. The school plans to upgrade the south campus by renovating Leo or potentially building a new lab building for science, technology, engineering and math south of Leo.
The 10-year master plan also includes a quad on the south campus across from Leo. MC, however, would have to first acquire the space used by Karl’s Auto Body.

The master plan’s growth is parallel to the school’s academic plan, which includes a growth in graduate programs, and as in previous years, enrollment. While MC now plans to not increase the rate of undergraduates too much, President Brennan O’Donnell gave a presentation that called for an emphasis on Title IX issues, and a focus on a more diverse student body.
“We have a lot of aspirations,” O’Donnell said at the meeting.

Women’s Rowing Added as an Intercollegiate Sport
Women’s rowing elevated from a club sport beginning in the 2015-16 academic year.
Manhattan College will add women’s rowing as an intercollegiate sport beginning in the 2015-16 academic year. The College will continue to support 19 sport programs as the Jaspers simultaneously discontinue the women’s tennis program.
“We are very excited to add a woman’s rowing program to our list of intercollegiate offerings,” said Noah D. LeFevre, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “The addition of a rowing program will enable us to increase our athletic participation and it will open up new doors to us from a development perspective. We are looking forward to competing in the MAAC women’s rowing championship as an intercollegiate program.”
Current Manhattan College club coach James Foley will continue to guide the rowing program as it ascends to intercollegiate status.

Obituary
Frederick H. Corirossi, 80 a resident in Danbury and Westchester, a remarkable dancer and an avid Yankees fan, passed away Sunday evening at Danbury Hospital's ICU unit.
Frederick was born in New York City on February 8, 1935, son of the late William and Lena Corirossi of Westchester. After graduating from Iona College he enlisted in the Army where he served as a dental assistant. His career journey took him to AT&T where he served as an overseas operator for 18 years receiving high accolades from customers and management. For sixteen years Frederick was a library assistant at Manhattan College. He was a movie extra for Mildred Pierce and Kings, just to name a few.
He enjoyed volunteering at Queen of the Clergy and the Danbury Registrar's Office. Fred is survived by his son Frederick "Tony" Corirossi, of Cliffton, NJ, his daughter, Terri Fermo and husband Anthony, grandsons Anthony and Nicholas of Fairfield, NJ, his sister Joy Episalla of Bronxville, NY, a nephew, Dr. Charles Episalla of Middletown, NY, a niece, Joy Episalla of New York City, as well as many other beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Anthony, John and Bill who was killed in WWII and buried in Normandy.
His survivors also include, long-time friend Sylvia Essington, trusted physican Dr. Martin Lebowski and best friend and care giver, Vickey Hickey.
Expression of deep gratitude to Dr. David Oelberg of the ICU unit at Danbury Hospital and to the kindness and never ending compassion of the staff including Kim, Stephanie, Dympha, Lisa, Helena, Rachael, Brittany and Cheryl; all the numerous do-gooders who shared a smile at Fred's doorway and to Dana on 11 East, who was always there.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 6th at St. Joseph Church, 8 Robinson Ave., Danbury, at 11am. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT on Wednesday from 8:30am – 10:30am. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to Queen of the Clergy, Priest Residence, 274 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902; Attn.: Vickey Hickey.

On the morning of May 4, 2015, Edward Alexander Nowatzki passed away peacefully at Santa Catalina Villas in Tucson, Arizona after a three month long battle with cancer. Ed was 79 years old.
Ed Nowatzki was born in the Bronx, New York on February 23, 1936. He was the second child, and only son, of his Polish immigrant parents, Marianna and Frank Nowatzki. While growing up, he and his family attended Blessed Sacrament Church where Ed also went to school and served as an altar boy for several years.
After studying at Cathedral Preparatory High School and Cathedral College in New York, Ed went on to Manhattan College where he met his wife of 50 plus years, Patricia Ann Nowatzki. They married in 1962 and journeyed to Tucson, Arizona where Ed went on to obtain his graduate degree and PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Arizona.
Ed made significant contributions to the Civil Engineering programs at both the UofA and Cal Poly State University, while remaining abreast of current trends through simultaneous service as a private sector consultant. Ed touched the careers and lives of literally thousands of students and practitioners.
Along the way, he held many positions and achieved many awards including Civil Engineer of the Year in 1998 from the ASCE Southern Branch as well as State of Arizona Engineer of the Year in 2007 from the Arizona Society of Professional Engineers.
Ed is survived by his wife, Patricia Nowatzki; his sister, Rita Nowatzki, SC and his children, Christopher (Amy), Eileen, Thomas and Joseph (Susan) and grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner.
A Wake will be held at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. in Tucson on Friday, May 8, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. with the Holy Rosary recited at 5:00 p.m. Cemetery Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Holy Hope Cemetery, 3555 N. Oracle Rd. in Tucson. Mass will follow at 4:00 p.m. at Holy Family Church, 338 W. University Blvd. in Tucson. Celebrate Ed's life with us afterwards at BJ's Restaurant at 4270 N. Less than two years later I was covering another basketball game involving another Catholic university — this time it was Manhattan College, playing New York University at Madison Square Garden. The Manhattan nickname was the Jaspers, named for a Brother Jasper, who had been the school’s baseball coach in the 1890s.
After a Manhattan fan lobbed a beer can at an N.Y.U. player, some of the kids in the N.Y.U. band chanted “What the heck’s a Jasper?” Harmless enough, right?
But within seconds, from many places in the Garden, came a response: “Arm the Arabs! Arm the Arabs!” The default taunt obviously was to somehow twin Israel with N.Y.U., and its large Jewish student body.

I was the only male goy in an all Jewish public school class in thru Bronx if you wish to hear about the way that Jewish class treated a Catholic there is a tale to toll.
The quote supposedly coming from the Jasper side of an arena sounds strangely like the shout “Guns For The Arabs, Track Shoes For The Jews” cried out by OS students in 1946 when almost 50% of the Bronx was Jewish.
Don’t claim that I am approving of any of this but I am claiming that prejudice is another stupidity that is not a one way street.

Sister Rosemary Lorenzen, Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood
In celebration of the Year for Consecrated Life, we feature a series of articles told by religious sisters and religious order priests and brothers, who will share the joy of their vocation. Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood Rosemary Lorenzen shares her story.
The Sisters of St. Joseph were my teachers in elementary and high school, so I knew them very well. Still, I had no desire to become a sister at that point. One day, a sister who taught me in high school asked, ‘What are you going to do when you graduate?’ I told her that I was not sure what I am going to do. She suggested that I become a Sister of St. Joseph.
At that point I was going out with a fellow in the Navy who wanted to get married. One day – and I don’t know what happened -- but the thought of getting married didn’t appeal to me anymore. I went back to the sister, and I said to her, ‘I think I want to become a Sister of St. Joseph.’ This all happened when I was a senior in high school.
I entered the community in 1952 and made my final profession in 1958. I think in the back of my mind, I wanted to be a sister all along. I have not regretted my decision for one minute.
Throughout my ministry, I have taught and taught and taught, in New York and Florida. I started off as a first grade teacher. During that time, I also graduated from St. Joseph College in Yonkers, N.Y. with my undergraduate degree in math.
I earned my master’s degree in math from Manhattan College in New York and taught seventh and eighth grade math until I retired from Good Shepherd Catholic School in Orlando in 2009. (Editor’s note: Sister Lorenzen moved to Florida in 1987.) Now I go back to the school four days a week and I tutor after school for two hours. One day a week, I visit the sick in the parish. I go to five people who are homebound.
The joy of my vocation has been working with the children. I have gotten so close to some of them and I have been important in some of their lives. So many times, people will come up to me after they have grown up and will say that I meant something to them in their lives. That to me is wonderful.

THE REAR GUARD ACTION THAT SAVED AMERICA
The battle of Hubbardton was perhaps the loss that saved the war for the patriots. British and German troops ran into stubborn rebel resistance at Hubbardton, Vermont, on July 7, 1777. After easily capturing Fort Ticonderoga, Lt. Gen. John Burgoyne pursued a retreating Continental army under Maj. Gen. Arthur St. Clair. In the fields and hills around Hubbardton, a tenacious American rear guard of about 1,200 derailed the British general's plan for a quick march to Albany. The British won a tactical victory, but they suffered precious losses. Patriots, under Col. Seth Warner, left the British and Germans bloodied, if victorious. Burgoyne and his weakened force ultimately surrendered at Saratoga on October 17, 1777, paving the way for a French alliance which ensured American independence
Bio: Dr. Bruce M. Venter is president of America's History, LLC, a tour and conference company where he leads Revolutionary War tours. This company is best known for its highly successful annual conference on the American Revolution. Bruce is also 1st vice president of the American Revolution Round Table of Richmond and former 1st vice president of the Goochland County Historical Society. He frequently lectures on the Revolutionary War, including at Fort Ticonderoga's American Revolution Seminar. He is also known for his character portrayals of General John Burgoyne and Charles Earl Cornwallis. Venter has published articles in Patriots of the American Revolution, Blue and Gray, Civil War, Goochland County Historical Society Magazine and the Washington Times. His forthcoming book, Kill Jeff Davis: Union Raid on Richmond will be published by the University of Oklahoma Press this fall.
Venter holds a B.A. in history from Manhattan College, and a doctorate in educational administration from the University at Albany. He lives in Goochland County, Virginia with his wife, Lynne and their beagle, "Sally Seddon."

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- At 69 years young, Dr. Vincent J. Maligno finally saw his name in lights.
The Staten Island sports fan, who celebrated his birthday April 26, was honored by the New York Yankees as the "Veteran of the Game" sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project.
The Vietnam vet's face and ame were flashed on the Jumbotron at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx — as did the Annadale resident's rank of major in the US Air Force.
"My wife, Amelia, and daughter, Megan, were able to join me on the field," said Dr. Maligno in speaking of his memorable moment. "What a phenomenal birthday."
Yankee manager Joe Girardi even presented him with an autographed No. 28 jersey to acknowledge his military service. It read: "Thanks for your service."
Home base umpire Jim Wolf also jumped on the band wagon, giving Dr. Maligno a game ball and thanking him for his extraordinary military service.
And if Dr. Maligno's name sounds familiar, it's all for good reason.
He was featured in a recent Inside Out unique love story about young Vincent Maligno and his mate, the former Amelia Mignone. The couple first crossed paths back in 1962, at a Monster Mash Dance staged at Xaverian High School, the Brooklyn all-boys school where he was a student.
The Malignos are now the parents of six children and four granddaughters.

A very good friend of mine has asked for our Prayers for a good friend of his who has just been through a major brain tumor operation and is now requiring further Radiation treatments as the Brain Cancer is a powerful strain. This good woman needs our prayers and I ask you once again to raise the volume foe her and her Family. She is a strong person but this new development has come as a shock. We pray the MDs are able to remove all the offending cells. Thank you.God Bless.

James Steven Cox, 70, of Hidden Valley, Pa., died May 8, 2015 at his home. Born June 6, 1944, in West Newton, Massachusetts, the son of James Steven and Florence (Moore) Cox.
Preceded in death by parents. Survived by the former Janice Kachmarsky, to whom he was married 47 years; children: James S. Cox and wife Holly, Catherine Cox, all of Pittsburgh; Michael Cox and wife Courtney of Orange County, California; grandchildren, James S. and Eleanor Cox; sister, Carol Houston and husband Barney of New Jersey. James is a graduate of Pius High School and Manhattan College.

Hired in May 2002, Kathy’s duties have expanded over the last 10 years to include research and analysis to support ACI’s scientific, oleochemical and regulatory programs. Then Ghlam ran into a spot of bother. He accidentally shot himself in the leg and was bleeding profusely. He drove his own car for some distance, then ended up ringing the emergency services! Police arrived on the scene and arrested him. He is currently in custody, although he is only answering certain questions from the authorities. Another weapons cache was found in his dorm room.
