POSITRACTION: Viktor Frankl on the Human Spirit

How We Elevate Each Other: Viktor Frankl on the Human Spirit and Why Idealism Is the Best Realism
by Maria Popova

*** begin quote ***

“If we take man as he really is, we make him worse. But if we overestimate him … we promote him to what he really can be.”

Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl (March 26, 1905–September 2, 1997) is a timeless testament to the luminous tenacity of the human spirit. His 1946 psychological memoir Man’s Search for Meaning (public library) is one of the most vital books ever written, and one of the most vitalizing one could ever read — a wealth of insight on how to persevere through troubled times and what it means to live fully.

*** end quote ***

I read this book very early in my educational years. (Wish I could remember when?)

I was amazed at the death camp side; the humanity came in by osmosis.

Soon after that, I became a “manager” at AT&T. I said many times that as a supervisor, the tile should be “leader”.

(“Manage Things and Lead People" — David T. Morgenthaler)

And, I hated to do appraisals. So I didn’t! I let my people set their own objectives (i.e., lines of correct code was a big metric in those days). I put down on a scrap of paper what I thought each one of my four people could reasonably accomplish. Didn’t show anyone. EVERY one of the four people ESTIMATE higher 25 to 200%; EVERYONE delivered more than they estimated.

An my “leadership” couldn’t understand how I made that happen. They called me “Simon Legree”. But I just patiently explained Frankl and expectations. I’ve never been disappointed by letting folks set their own targets.

I was amazed to see this video.

Wish I could have heard him live.

Good Evening All,

Teri Johnson, a friend to several of us and Mike McEneney's Daughter asks for our prayers for a friend of hers, Laure O'Connor-Koehler. Teri and Laure attended St Barnabas Grammar School together and have remained good Friends. Laure has been in our prayers and we need to raise the volume for her. Laure is receiving a Kidney Transplant tomorrow. As Teri says, " it has been a long and arduous road but Laure keeps her Faith and positive attitude in the forefront of it all and is truly one of the good ones." Let us raise our voices as we pray for a successful operation and, as Laure heals, that she encounter no complications. Please keep Laure and her Family in your prayers. Thank you Teri. God Bless.

Brendan E. Joyce, of East Dennis, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015.

As his name denotes, Brendan had the classic wit, wisdom and verve of an Irish sage. Father, tomato farmer, historian, husband and friend he cut through the nonsense of the world with brilliant insight, humor and canny common sense.

Brendan loved his country, his town, his neighborhood and his family His country will remember him for 30 years of service in the US Army Medical Service Corp earning a Bronze Star and Vietnam Service Medals.

His neighborhood and town will remember him for his passion for history and untiring commitment to the Dennis Historical Society, Jacob Sears Library and the Quivet Neck Homeowners Association as well as his hospitality and support of local civic causes.

His family will remember him for his intelligence, his love of opera, wine and cooking, his gardens and his wit.

Brendan, a biochemist, received a BS from Manhattan College, a MS from Virginia Poly Tech, and a PhD from the University of California, San Francisco.

He was the grand host of many feasts and lively debates and we are thankful for being the recipients of his generosity, his handiness and knowledge.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Heather

2015-Apr-25

Good Afternoon All,

I ask you to raise the Volume for our Niece Heather, her Husband Cameron and their two young children. We have had Heather in our prayers and she is not doing well. Heather, a Charge Nurse in Virginia, has changed her Doctor/Surgeon as she felt he was not treating her well. As a complication from her surgery, Cancer, she has developed an infection at the incision that has left her quite weak. She is in great pain and is being medicated for that. Her new Doctor has told her that she has several more tumors that have to be removed as soon as she is strong enough to be operated upon but wants to keep her out of the hospital where the possibility of further infection is possible and will bring her in as soon as the infection is cleared up and Heather is strong enough physically. Emotionally, Heather has been a powerhouse. She has kept her Faith and beautiful smile for her Family. She is a firm believer in our prayers as we brought her through a difficul time before her first child was born, then again, three years ago with her first bout with Ovarian Cancer. Heather is prepared for whatever may come and her trust in God and her Faith are strong and she needs our prayers. Please raise the volume as we pray for the best. Thank you. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: Twenty-Nine Dollar Challenge?

2015-Apr-25

Jack's Twenty-Nine Dollar Challenge
By Jack Perry
April 13, 2015

*** begin quote ***

See, we don’t need rich celebrities to “walk in our shoes” for a week. We want to keep the money we make. We want the government out of our lives and wallets. We want an end to these pointless wars and endless slaughter committed all over the planet in our name. We’ll take that $29 and buy bread and not put it towards another bomb to drop on people that did nothing to us whatsoever. Yeah, I’ve got $29 and I don’t need Hillary, Gwyneth, or Obama to tell me how to spend it. Or extract it from me in taxes and go out and kill people that never did anything to me. Or give it to bloated bureaucrats in other governments so they can waste it as our own does.

Yeah, I’ve got your Twenty-Nine Dollar Challenge right here. Jack’s Twenty-Nine Dollar Challenge: Give us our twenty-nine bucks BACK, how about that, huh?!

*** end quote ***

Gwyneth Paltrow made the news and really looks to me like a horse’s <synonym for donkey>!

At least the “Ice Bucket” challenge made some sense.

Until those <synonym for donkey> (plural) dump urine on a disabled boy!

The takers are bankrupting the makers. And, the liberals keep want to tell us how to live.

Charity should be private. The Gooferment should only be a referee or umpire preventing force or fraud.

Leave people alone to find their own way, create their own bonds, and “weave their own safety net”.

Argh!

Just because someone is one of the “beautiful people” doesn’t endow them to lecture us on “social justice” topics. Or anything else.

Argh!
