POSITRACTION: Cleopatra gets a 3D-printed shell

2015-Apr-12

http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/242146/this-injured-tortoise-can-now-rock-a-3d-printed-shell/

This injured tortoise can now rock a 3D-printed shell
by Stefan Sirucek / March 27, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Cleopatra is a royally-named tortoise with a royal problem: she has a condition know as “peaking” or, rather appropriately considering her name, “pyramiding”, a disorder that prevents her shell from growing smoothly. This is an issue because tortoises mount each others backs for a variety of reasons from mating to simple play and Cleopatra’s uneven pyramids have resulted in excessive wear and tear to her shell, which in tortoises can lead to disease.

*** end quote ***

It’s amazing that humans can have such empathy and problem solving skills.

Wonder when this gets translated to our dealing with other humans?

3D printing is already saving lives in American medicine.

“What hath God wrought.”

JEMAIL: Jablon, Ken (MC1962) asks a challenging question

2015-Apr-12

John,

You said, "As a little L libertarian, I trace my belief back to the 'classical liberal'. Every man is his own sovereign.” I agree. The problem is that many individuals and most religions, particularly the Catholic Church, state that only they know what the “moral truths” are. So how can “every man be his own sovereign?”

Ken Jablon '62

# - # - #

[JR: Wow! You do remember that I’m a fat old white guy injineer. Right? With enough D’s in Theology to choke a horse. I’ll answer this like the good fallen away little c fellow I am. Honest I am; asserts I can. Remember Wayne Dyer? He quotes Mother Theresa about “silence”. I heard him speak once — Alma Mater exposed me to Doctor Norman Vincent Peale, the Dali Lama, and whole bunch of other “inspired” individuals. Any way Dyer told a tale — no idea if true of not — no reason to doubt or no evidence to support — that he was speaking to a hostile crowd about abortion — and he said something like “be quiet. search your soul and listen to what it says is right.” The crowd disappeared. I make no claim to know what the Truth is, or even what it should be for others. But, if I sit quietly and listen, I know what is right for me. Hence my religious (little R) beliefs, my little L libertarian politics, and my knowledge that I have much to atone for in my life. Holy Mother Church and other “actors” can state that they know the “moral truths”. I wouldn’t dispute them. Who am I? But I’m reminded of a movie scene of Saint Thomas Moore. "And when we die, and you are sent to heaven for doing your conscience, and I am sent to hell for not doing mine, will you come with me, for fellowship?" Paul Scofield as Thomas More in “A Man for All Seasons” (1966) Hence, I’ll follow my own inner “guide”. And, as my own sovereign, will conduct myself consistent with my own inner standards. If wrong, I can only say: “I did my best”?  ]

[JR: Thanks for the hardest email I’ve ever received via Jasper Jottings. Humbles me. Dona Nobis Pacem]

[JR: Upon reflection, I hope this wasn’t rhetorical. If it was, don’t I look dumb!]

JOBIT: Kropp, William 'Bill' [MC1959 RIP]

2015-Apr-12

William Kropp
Obituary

MADISON, Wis. | William ("Bill") Kropp, age 86, departed life April 11, 2015. He leaves his wife Irene Kropp, daughter Jeane Kropp (Jay Laurie), brother Bob Kropp (Lois), sister Bette Halm (Walter: deceased), sister Ellen Galligan (Dan), sister-in-law Alberta Kinne (Richard), cousins Richard Kropp and Nancy McMahon (Bill), nineteen nieces and nephews, as well as many grand nieces and nephews. He also had his cherished grand dogs, Quattro and Mini.

Born in New York City and schooled in the Catholic school system, faith played a big role in Bill's life. Ask him about being an Alter Boy and stories would flow. Did you know he went to the same Catholic high school (Cardinal Hayes) as George Carlin? Of course you didn't. No one does. But it's cool.
Bill was drafted into the Korean conflict and served as a medic in the infantry. The GI bill allowed him to get a degree from Manhattan College ---quonset hut classrooms - Google it. After college, Bill worked in public accounting until he joined Wausau Insurance Company. During this time, he and Irene adopted their daughter Jeane. There's a great story about Bill driving about 10 miles an hour (um, in New York) while taking Jeane home, just to keep his new daughter safe.

A true New Yorker, Bill could tell you what was at the corner of X Ave and Y Street up until the end. He never lost his accent or his love of NY pizza. Bill moved the family from NY to WI to advance in his career at Wausau Insurance. He retired in 1992 and decided to spend some of retirement in North Carolina.

Fairfield Harbour in New Bern NC was the place to be, as it had two golf courses and many kindred souls. The first six months of Bill and Irene's residence in New Bern uncovered so many other NY (and even the Bronx!), NJ and Midwestern natives that they gathered friends instantly. A warm hug to Marge and Ray, Vinnie, Ann and Rich, June and John, Henry and Nancy, Richard and Patricia, Mac, and Bill's poker buddies (he says you cheated) for being such wonderful friends.

A loving husband and father, Bill was an avid golfer and had a hole-in-one on four occasions. He appreciated books, gin martinis, music, theater and crazy mutt dogs. Oh, did we mention gin martinis? A sports fan he was, taking much joy in seeing the Packers play once from the warmth of a luxury box. And going to Joe DiMaggio's restaurant was a special thrill. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and also a member of the American Legion. Bill had a long history of volunteering at hospitals, church and charity organizations.

Special thanks to Jen and the team in Memory Care at Golden Living in Beaver Dam. You were awesome.

If you are so inspired, please donate in memory of Bill to: The MS Society: Wisconsin Chapter -- (his daughter has MS), any Alzheimer's/Dementia organization, or Dane County Humane Society. If you're Catholic, light a candle. He'd like that.

Love you dad.

Thomas S. Dowling
Obituary

GlenvilleThomas S. Dowling passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2015.

Born in Bronx, NY, he relocated his young family to upstate, where he established roots in Glenville 45 years ago, to raise four children with his wife, the late Mary (Jarcynski) Dowling. Their home on Cypress Drive provided a country setting for their children, numerous local children and their own eight grandchildren, who craved summer weeks spent in Glenville and brought them such joy. Countless hours would be spent swimming in their pool, exploring the creek and the woods behind the house and hiking the trails to Indian Meadows.

The oldest of Thomas J. Dowling and Margaret Cummings, Tom graduated from St. John's Grammar School and Mount Saint Michael's Academy in the Bronx. He would go on to Manhattan College and receive his bachelor's, working in sales for 35 years.

Tom most recently was a bus driver for Shenendehowa Central Schools for 15 years until his retirement. Tom loved his family and was affectionately known as Pops.

His sense of humor and ability to light up a room will be missed. He could tell a joke, serve as a scout on family vacations, and always enjoyed a round of poker or Michigan Rummy. He was a voracious reader, creative writer, and a great storyteller. Pops dabbled in photography, bird watching, enjoyed his newspapers and sports pages, and could often be found working in his yard.

Tom is survived by his daughter, Laura (Michael) Aldrich of Winchester, MA; sons, Timothy (Lisa) of Narrowsburg, NY, and Stephen of Schenectady; and eight beloved grandchildren, Aidan, Reed, Ella, Mallory, Liam and Finn Aldrich, and Kate and Meghan Dowling. His son, Thomas, died in 1988 from Muscular Dystrophy. Tom is also survived by his sisters, Nancy Keating and her husband, Henry of East Windsor, NJ, Mary Jane McCormick of Columbus, NJ; his brother Brian and his wife, Jackie of Wantagh, NY, his sisters-in-law, Georgiana Farley of East Hanover, NJ, June O'Brien of Cincinnati, OH, Mary Roeske of East Setauket, NY, along with many nieces and nephews and their families.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday. April 16 at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, East Glenville. On Friday, April 17 funeral services begin at 8:15 a.m. at the funeral home and are followed at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville. Private interment will be at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenville at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to www.shriners hospitalsforchildren.org or to www.boystown.org. I decided to photograph my rest day on Sunday which turned into an impromptu trip to my old college in the Bronx, Manhattan College, filled with delicious eats at a Jewish Deli that my family and I always loved to go to when I was in college. (More to that in a minute)

JNEWS: Moran, Thomas J. (MC1974) Chancellor Queen’s University Belfast

Queen’s University Belfast appoints new Chancellor

Queen's University today announced the appointment of leading Irish-American businessman and noted humanitarian, Thomas J Moran, as its new Chancellor.

A native New Yorker with ancestral roots in Fermanagh and Cavan, Tom Moran is listed as one of the top 100 Irish-American business people in the USA. He has been President and Chief Executive Officer of the Mutual of America Life Insurance Company since October 1994, the first person to have been appointed President from within the Company.

He is also Chairman of Concern Worldwide (US), Inc., an international humanitarian relief organisation that operates in 30 of the poorest countries of the world. He has contributed to several humanitarian and community causes, including acting as one of a group of unofficial peace envoys to Northern Ireland throughout the 1990s.

*** and ***

The Chancellor fulfils three main roles – a ceremonial one which involves presiding at degree congregations; an ambassadorial role, where the office holder helps to “open doors” for the University as it seeks to fulfil its mission; and finally as an advisor, available to the Vice-Chancellor and senior management as a “sounding board” and to provide counsel and guidance.

ENDNOTE: Politicians and bureaucrats are always trying to steal more of your wealth

2015-Apr-18

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2015/04/warning-obama-plan-would-bar-you-from.html

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 2015
WARNING Obama Plan Would Bar You From Adding More to Your IRA and 401Ks Under Certain Conditions

*** begin quote ***

If we assume even a conservative interest rate of only 10%, an individual who only has approx. $245,000 in tax deferred savings accounts at age 40, would be barred from adding to the savings accounts FROM AGE 40 ON. (At an interest rate of 12%, the savings cut off would be approx. $165,000)

And money outside the deferred accounts, under this scenario, would be taxed on what for the most part would simply be interest earned to maintain the purchasing power value of the funds. That is, the tax, for all practical purposes, would be an extraordinary tax on retirement savings beyond a very limited sheltered amount.

*** end quote ***

For some of us with many years on the odometer, we remember the 21% inflation rate of the 70’s and Tbills paying 16%. And, you were losing ground.

In the Zero Rate Interest Environment, it allows the Gooferment to carry “our” large debt easily. But sooner or later, some very very ugly chickens are coming home to roost.

After the last trial balloon “exchange your risky IRA and 401Ks for an enhance Social Security benefit” was laughed out of the District of Corruption — even the politicians couldn’t say it with straight face — along comes another whopper.

They manipulate the interest rate and say “see, you’re rich”. Meanwhile, you won’t be able to afford bottom shelf dog food.

Moral of the story:

The Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient

Politicians are snakes and will be enjoying their lifetime “pension” when the bills come due

You must invest in stuff they can print — land, beans, bullets, bandaids, and bullion.

Argh!
