POSITRACTION: FACETIME as a medical tool

NJ doctor guides baby delivery via FaceTime

By LINDA SCHMIDT, @LSchmidtFox5

*** begin quote ***

The office manager grabbed her iPhone, and using FaceTime Dr. Devalla was able to watch the delivery and talk her assistants through it.

Dr. Devalla says FaceTime is a great tool for an emergency, but she wants to stick to traditional deliveries.

*** end quote ***

When I was on the First Aid squad, radio communications with the ER was just becoming common place.

But it was was to let them know we were inbound and what to prepare for.

Now days, paramedics meet the First Aid squad with a “hot case”.

Imagine when the ER doc can be virtually in the ambulance to advise or direct.

That’s progress.

My near miss, when I’d have be happy to have a doctor over my shoulder, was when I was commuting into NYC on the train. The wires were knocked down. And, of course, that’s when a lady decides to go into labor. Long story short, the train got priority in the mess and the lady was off to the hospital. Closest time I have ever gotten to my USAF survival school training on how to deliver a baby — Why? How should I know. But, always wanted to do it. Laff. Unfortunately women prefer real doctors.

But, in any event, great progress.

JEMAIL: Dans, Peter E. (MC1957) on Hollywood

2015-Mar-22

HI John:

I did not respond to your excellent endnote on "What happened to Hollywood". However, when I saw it praised in this week's edition of Jasper Jottings,.I thought I would chime in and give you an update since I haven't written in a while.. As you may know, I have been writing a column titled the Physician at the Movies for Pharos the quarterly Journal of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society for 25 years. I had the same concerns. In 2009, Rowman and Littlefield published my book Christians in the Movies: A Century of Saints and Sinners which looks at the treatment of Christians and specifically Catholicism in about 200 movies by decade from 1905 to 2008. It shows the change from reverence to ridicule beginning about 1970 with the demise of Legion of Decency and the stringent Hays Code. It got excellent reviews and sold out its hardback edition and is available at a much reduced price in paperback and electronically on Amazon.

Since 2000 at age 62 I have published 7 books on various subjects including the portrayal of doctors in the movies, growing up on The Lower East Side (in its fourth printing). My children's book about the peregrine falcons return to Baltimore is being used in the 3rd grade curriculum in the Baltimore public schools. Another children's book Sergeant Bill and His Horse Bob will be published by Camino Books this Summer. More info is available at my website physicianatthemovies.com

I self-published a book about the Life and Death of my high schools La Salle Military School after 118 years in 2001. It is available through the LSMA Alumni Association. The other book about my wife's battle with Breast Cancer, Colette's Story, was given to relatives and friends. Even people who didn't know Colette and have seen the book have been touched by it.

{Extraneous Deleted}

I continue to read and enjoy Jasper Jottings. Keep up the good work.

Best regards,

Peter

Richard T. Sheehan
February 16, 1942 - March 20, 2015
Posted: Monday, March 23, 2015 3:36 pm

WILLSBORO - Richard T. Sheehan, 73, of Club Drive, Willsboro, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 20, 2015 at his home with his loving family by his side.

Richard was born in the Inwood section of Manhattan, N.Y., on Feb. 16, 1942. He was the son of the late Gerald and Anne (Farrell) Sheehan.

Richard served in the US Army and attended Manhattan College. He was a District Manager with AT&T for over 30 years. He worked in various locations, some of which included NYC, N.J. and Va. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peg"; children, Jennifer Royle (Richard), Deborah Cilea (Jeff), Michele Serkin (Jason), Pamela Joyce (Mark), and Connor; brother, Gerald and Ronnie McCluskey; grandchildren, Meghan, Alison and Aaron Royle, Quinn and Vaughn Cilea, Evan and Phoebe Serkin, and Sean and Lindsey Joyce; the Varian's, mother-in-law, Maureen; sisters-in-law, Jean, Theresa, Patricia, and Catherine; his brothers-in-law, Charles and Timothy. He is also survived by his former wife, Yvonne Sheehan.

For someone who grew up in NYC, Richard loved to garden. His vegetable gardens were a "site for sore eyes". Everyone looked forward to whatever he grew, and he enjoyed making new recipes with the vegetables. He loved to ride the John Deere tractor around the property. He was an avid NY Yankees and NY Giants fan. Richard loved to travel. Going on another cruise or taking a vacation were things he loved to do. But, the thing he loved the most, was when the whole family came up for July 4th weekend, and all the while swimming in the lake, kayaking, and having a barbeque with all of his children and grandchildren, meant the most to him.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. MOBIT: Theisen, Elizabeth ‘Liz’, spouse of Theisen, Chuck [MC1957]

2015-Mar-24

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/naplesnews/obituary.aspx?n=Elizabeth-Theisen&pid=174468066

Elizabeth Theisen
Obituary

Elizabeth (Liz) Henze Theisen of Naples, FL passed away March 16, 2015. Liz was born October 2, 1937 in New York City, the fourth child of Mary Murphy Henze and Raymond Henze. She was graduated from the Academy of Mount St. Vincent in Tuxedo Park, New York where she made many life long friends and attended the College of Mount St. Vincent for one year. Her college career ended when she met Chuck Theisen, a senior at Manhattan College on a blind date. She took a bit of convincing, but Chuck finally won her over and after he finished college and received a commission in the Navy they were married on December 26, 1957.

For 57 years Liz was the epitome of the biblical wife: loving spouse, caring mother and later, strong business woman. Liz, while busy raising 4 children, always found time for volunteer work; in her children's schools and running CCD religious education programs, even building one from the ground up at one base. Liz was especially committed to her work at the Navy Relief Society where she was presented the Meritorious Service Award, the highest honor given to a volunteer. In addition to thousands of hours volunteering, Liz reestablished a closed chapter at one base, recruited volunteers and helped countless young sailors.

Liz's management skills, developed during her volunteer work, were put to good use in 1982 when Chuck retired from the Navy and they started a consulting company, HFA, Inc., with Liz as President. The company grew gradually from a staff of 6 parttime workers to a work force of over 250 employees. In 1995 Liz was named the Small Business Person of the year by the Small Business Administration. The company became the favorite supplier of Ordnance and Explosive Waste services, cleaning up left over unexploded ordnance at target ranges throughout the U.S. and Canada. In addition to clearing closed U.S. Army sites, HFA won contracts to clean up factory sites for Dupont, Hercules and Morton Thiokol. In the final year before they sold the company, HFA was awarded a contract by the Israeli Defense Forces to clean up a factory site at which nitro-cellulose was manufactured.

While running the company Liz still found time to mother a special needs foster child who had severe learning disabilities. After 3 years Jennifer went from a 10 year old with little cognitive development to a functioning young lady who could read and write at the 2nd grade level. Jennifer went from an angry, withdrawn little girl to a self-confident teenager.

In retirement in SW Florida Liz's devotion to children continued when she became a Guardian ad Litem representing children removed from their homes for various family problems. She also volunteered as a tutor teaching English to Hispanic workers at Shadow Wood.

She is survived by her loving husband, Chuck; and her children, Chuck and his wife, Mo, Mary Beth, Elizabeth, and Jeanne and the joy of her life; her grandsons, Jason and Joseph.

Liz was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond; and her sister, Ursula. Her sisters, Sr. Mary Adele Henze and Catherine Henze Surlis; and many nieces and nephews, will miss Liz. Her loving, caring presence will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be held, Wednesday, March 25th at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Bonita Springs.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Liz's memory to either the Sergio Jimenez Scleroderma Research Fund at Jefferson University (www.advancement.jefferson.edu & click on Memorial and Tribute Giving) or to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (www.nmcrs.org).

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE FACEBOOK NEWS DESK
IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM ...

Brian Horgan
2 hrs · Pine Bush, NY

Two good men have left us within a week.

On Tuesday the 17th my wife's brother-in-law Jim Keene passed away. He was a kind, thoughtful man. He served in Vietnam

On Monday the 23rd my father-in-law Bill Dotson was struck and killed while crossing the street by his house. A WWII veteran - he was engaging - a reader, a character. On Monday the 16th he and I had spent our real first time alone - almost three hours talking, exploring and comparing notes. A promise of more conversations and book discussions to come. That time was a gift to me - but I had been looking forward to more.

Rest in Peace.

Notice

MUSIAL - Bart Ben, MD, son of the late Gene and Irene Musial. Loving father to Nicholas, Derek, and Kaitlyn, and devoted husband to Debra Musial, passed away this Monday the 23rd of March 2015.

Since he was five years old, Bart knew he wanted to be a healer. Beginning with his acceptance into Regis High School he went on to graduate from Manhattan College and then the University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. He did his residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Rutgers and his fellowship at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital. He lived out his childhood dream of becoming a doctor as an Invasive Cardiologist as a Partner at Cardiology Associates of Fort Lauderdale for 23 years until he began to falter in his extensive battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Bart Musial was cherished by his family, friends and patients just as he cherished them. His battle was long but he fought with poise and dignity until the end. He will be sorely missed.

If you wish to pay your respects, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation towards pancreatic research through the American Cancer Society or cardiovascular research at Holy Cross Hospital. PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Bert, Brenda, Lisa, and Wayne

2015-Mar-25

Good Evening All,

I ask for your prayers for three good people that I learned about from some workmen we had doing work at our home last week in Delaware. They were very pleased and touched to know that we would be willing to pray for their loved ones.

>  We pray for Bert's Wife, Brenda. Brenda has just gone on Dialysis, three days a week. Although she goes in for 4 hours beginning at  4:30 AM and has had a couple of technical glitches, she is up to the task as is her husband, and they trust in God. A transplant failed but they have not given up hope. Bert is a very likable man, a Vietnam Veteran with two Purple Hearts and a great deal of pride and honor in his Service. Please pray for them.

> We pray also for Brenda's Sister, Lisa (Bert's Sister-In-Law). Lisa was Diagnosed with Throat Cancer on Friday, March 13th. We pray that her treatments have the prayed for results.

> When Bert's Brother, Wayne (the Lead on the work project) heard me taking the information from his brother, Wayne asked me if we could put him on our prayer list as well. I believe he has some Prostate Cancer concerns.

Thank you all for your continued dedication and prayerful efforts. As Jim Smith says, " Prayer Works." God Bless.

ENDNOTE: KofC honors pro-abortion, pro-homosexual “marriage” Gov?

2015-Mar-28

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/deaconsbench/2015/03/virginia-parish-severs-ties-with-knights-of-columbus-over-plans-to-honor-gov-terry-mcauliffe/

*** begin quote ***

A Virginia Knights of Columbus council is pressing forward with plans to honor pro-abortion, pro-homosexual “marriage” Gov. Terry McAuliffe by having him as grand marshal of its St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In response, the parish priest has strongly reproached the council and cut ties.

Norfolk Knights of Columbus Council 3548, which has organized the Norfolk Saint Patrick’s Day Parade since 1967, had secured McAuliffe as grand marshal, apparently keeping the choice from the pastor of Holy Trinity Parish, where the council is based. When Father Dan Beeman took it up with the state council on the advice of his bishop, he was told by the state council that another grand marshal would be chosen, a decision that was reversed ten days later.

“Governor McAuliffe stands contrary to the Catholic Church in not one but many of the most essential teachings of the Church in the political arena,” the Norfolk pastor wrote in a March 5 letter to parishioners, distributed at Sunday Mass on March 8. “He himself promised to be a ‘brick wall’ against restrictions on abortion, has taken away commonsense protections for women in abortion facilities and lowered safety standards, and consistently takes money from pro-abortion lobbying groups.”

*** end quote ***

I’m speechless!?!
