POSITRACTION: Alonzo Bodden reminded me of George Carlin

Alonzo Bodden

STRESS FACTORY
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ

# - # - # - # - #

Had the privilege of seeing him perform on Valentine’s Day.

He did a most interesting riff about the medical panics used to stampede “We, The Sheeple”.

I recall, other than a lot of bad words, he pointed to, in succession, measles, ebola, bird flue, sars, mad cow, … … and that’s just what I remember.

He pointed  that there were only a few cases of each in countries with millions or billions of people.

AND, that the “disease scare” died out as soon as the next story came along.

He pointed out he was too busy making a living to get caught up in the hype.

I thought that was a “George Carlin” moment. You know when George would hit on some “elemental truth” and ram it home with sarcastic humor.

I also so saw him chagrined when he was mocking about a teacher telling him “he wouldn’t always have a calculator” as held up his smart phone. He went through a few apps and then said: “I even have an app that let’s you take a photograph of a math problem and sends it to Chinese kid who solved it for a quarter.” Very funny, UNTIL he saw a woman of Chinese ancestry, in the SECOND row. He backpedalled that one real quick.

Funny, but I didn’t think it was racist, but obviously he did.

In any event, the thing I took away is pay no attention to the hype and pay lots of attention to not inadvertently hurting our fellow humans.

That an extension of the Zero Aggression Principle — don’t use force on people — of be mindful of people’s feelings.

JEMAIL: Antenucci, John (MC1959) on Kellogg, Junius [MC1953 RIP]

2015-Feb-23

"He spent the remainder of his life living in the Bronx, until he died in 1998. There were testimonials for this great hero in Manhattan College, yet for some reason the rest of the world never quite recognized his gallant life."

Jasper Jottings / John R.

The above quote is from the article by Filip Bondy regarding Junius Kellogg.

One of the testimonials was created by Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity between the years of 1956 and 1959. The fraternity developed a major dance in honor of Junius Kellogg recognizing the courage and integrity it took to break the points shaving scheme that was tarnishing the game of college basketball. Manhattan College has many heroes that graduated from our college. We should all be proud to stand with the memory of Junius Kellogg and what he did to make our College proud of what he did. I know that I am very proud to be part of Alpha Phi Delta, the fraternity that recognized our fellow alum, Junius Jellogg.

I visited with Fr. Jack a week ago today and despite his physical ailments his spirit and attitude are still amazing.

He is very grateful for the tremendous support and prayers that he has received from his "Manhattan" Family

JEMAIL: O'Connor, Bob (MC1953) updates on the Reilly Jasper clan

2015-Feb-25

John –

Thanks for your continued effort on Jasper Jottings. I admire your work.

Much appreciated!

Last issue saddened me seeing the obit for George Reilly (’55).

As Mike McE told you he was brother to our classmate –Willy ’53.

BUT. His was from a real Jasper family.

To wit:

Brothers – John (1951?)

William –(Willy ’53) –co-founder of Follow the five

George (55)

Sister – Ellen – worked switchboard weekends and summer –

Married a Jasper –Tom Raftery (53)

Mother – Catherine – was Chief Housekeeper for the Brothers’

Residence and Students Dorms for many years.

Willy (and Johnna) had kids that went to Manhattan, but I don’t know

How many, who nor when.

Now That’s a Jasper CLAN !!!

Just interesting to note. Perhaps there are others.

Regards,
Bob O’Connor (’53)

[JR: First, thank you for your kind words. I’m always in awe of our fellow Jaspers and Attendees. Even though, last week’s John Butz obit made me VERY sad. As I “invest” more and more of my time in Jasper Jottings, I wonder if it dies when I do. You have to be a glutton for punishment to do this. I have made arrangements for my Executrix and my Data Custodian to preserve what I have done. (And, monetize any of my writings for the benefit of a bunch of children; having none of my own.) Sometimes, I labor on it and wonder if anyone reads it. At least, Jasper Stebbins Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) could be counted on for vocal feedback. It’s also very “sporadic”. Days with nothing and days with 10 or more stories. So, thanks for the feedback, it’ll keep me going for another month.]

[JR: Second, it’s a great email for causing Mike to go nuts checking all the names and years. Have to have to have some challenges to keep the old fellow’s mind active. After all Schlickenrieder, Warren (MC1942) keeps nipping at his heels. Laugh! BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), NO ONE wants the CIC chair. Thanks for the laugh.]

MFOUND: But freelancing is the greatest

2015-Feb-26

*** begin quote ***

Adam: Oddly enough, I never thought about doing that when I was younger! I sort of fell into journalism. I always loved writing, but never had a clear career path. I studied English and Communications at Manhattan College in the Bronx, where I still live. After college I bounced around at all sorts of jobs (landscaping, librarian) and ended up taking an internship on my days off at the New York Press, a paper that no longer exists but once featured great Matt Taibbi articles. His work, as well as Tom Robbins stuff at the Village Voice, really got me into wanting to be a reporter. I started freelancing, got a job at a local paper (The Riverdale Press in the Bronx) and learned as I went along. Now I'm a freelancer and am constantly worried about money and health insurance and other things like that, but freelancing is the greatest. My advice is start pitching your local paper (if you have one) story ideas and work your way up from there.

Van Cortlandt Motel in Riverdale up for sale
Updated February 26, 2015 12:01 PM

*** begin quote ***

RIVERDALE - The Van Cortlandt Motel in Riverdale has recently gone up for sale, and many Bronx residents say it has tremendous potential.

The nearly 60-year-old motel is up for grabs with a price tag of $8 million. Many residents say they are not too fond of the motel and hope that the corner lot will transform into something more inviting.

In the past, the motel established a reputation for cheap prices by the hour.

[JR: Student housing? Maybe Alma Mater can sell it “by the hour”?]

ENDNOTE: Who wants "a race of thoroughbreds"?

“Mass Sterilization”: Kenyan Doctors Find Anti-fertility Agent in UN Tetanus Vaccine

*** begin quote ***

According to LifeSiteNews, a Catholic publication, the Kenya Catholic Doctors Association is charging UNICEF and WHO with sterilizing millions of girls and women under cover of an anti-tetanus vaccination program sponsored by the Kenyan government.

*** end quote ***

Anyone remember Margaret Sanger?

*** begin quote ***

On blacks, immigrants and indigents:

"...human weeds,' 'reckless breeders,' 'spawning... human beings who never should have been born." Margaret Sanger, Pivot of Civilization, referring to immigrants and poor people

On sterilization & racial purification:

Sanger believed that, for the purpose of racial "purification," couples should be rewarded who chose sterilization. Birth Control in America, The Career of Margaret Sanger, by David Kennedy, p. 117, quoting a 1923 Sanger speech.

On the right of married couples to bear children:

Couples should be required to submit applications to have a child, she wrote in her "Plan for Peace." Birth Control Review, April 1932

On the purpose of birth control:

The purpose in promoting birth control was "to create a race of thoroughbreds," she wrote in the Birth Control Review, Nov. 1921 (p. 2)

*** end quote ***

At least, she was “honest” about “human being who never should have been born”.

I have no knowledge that this is more than hype.

But, I do see the number of abortions here in the US. One has to believe that the intelligentsia is breeding “better people”?

Argh!

Are we on the road to our own destruction as a species?

Seems that way.
