Free is Beautiful: Why Catholics Should be Libertarian – April 20, 2012
by Randy England (Author)

*** begin quote ***

Free is Beautiful by Randy England uses the scriptures, the writings of the Saints and the Catechism to show why Catholicism is essentially libertarian. Only through our free will can we become virtuous and share in the divine life; knowing, loving and serving God. Centuries ago, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine recognized the futility and evil in trying to force people to be virtuous. They taught that government should limit itself to keeping the peace by protecting people's lives and property. The golden rule teaches that we must not do to another what we would not want done to ourselves. Don't cheat. Don't steal. Don't hit. Don't harm others. Live and let live. Mind your own business.

Libertarians call this the non-aggression principle: that no person or group may initiate force against another. The modern state knows no such limits, making everyone's business its own and leaving the individual naked before it. No matter which political party is in power, the government continues to grow unchecked, ignoring justice and fundamental rights, keeping the poor in a place of permanent dependency, while plundering the future to give favors to its friends and extending its world-wide empire through endless warfare.

It is time to consider libertarianism, the most just system in a fallen world and the only political philosophy that takes human dignity and free will seriously. Liberty will not feed a man, nor will it get him into heaven, but does guarantee him the freedom to do both.

*** end quote ***

I found this a very positive experience.

Haven’t read the whole book, but “peeks” and hearing him interview, I think he has an argument worth considering.

For me my journey to be a little L libertarian started when the Good Christian Brother (who’s name I forget) in Good Shepherd grammar school taught us about the “Just War Theory”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_war_theory

Then, it was “baked in” when I read the “juvenile” science fiction of Robert Heinlein.

If we are to have “free will”, then we have to be free to make our own mistakes.

Seems like “God” is a little L libertarian.

SASB Provides Standards For Measuring Non-Financial Performance

*** begin quote ***

As the world increasingly focuses on performance measures that aren’t captured in the financial statements, it is important to have some objective standards by which to measure social and environmental impacts and ethical corporate governance. Enter the SASB.

Dr. Jean Rogers, CEO of the SASB, explains, “The information investors need to make decisions has changed. In today’s world, how effectively a company addresses sustainability issues can impact its financial position and future prospects. But investors lack access to standardized information on these increasingly significant factors.”

*** and ***

Dr. Jean Rogers is the Founder & CEO of SASB. Since 2010 SASB developed from an idea formulated in collaboration with the Harvard University Initiative for Responsible Investment at the Kennedy School of Government into a globally-respected, ANSI-accredited, independent standards-setting organization.

Jean draws upon her 20 years’ experience in sustainability and management consulting across a wide range of industries including utilities, extractives, financials, and real estate. She has worked with international clients to integrate sustainability into strategy and operations, minimizing risk and maximizing returns across the triple bottom line. Jean’s leadership experience includes 10 years as a Principal at Arup, a global engineering consultancy focused on sustainable development. Jean was also a management consultant at Deloitte, working in the environmental and manufacturing practices to help leading companies improve business and product performance through sustainability.

Jean is a former Loeb Fellow at Harvard University and holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and an ME in Environmental Engineering and a BE in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College.

[JR: On a technical note, this is a most imaginative take on a story we all know. She takes it from a young girl’s view. If you have a youngster who might need a push in reading, religion, or just something “clean and wholesome”, then this is it. While not my usual reading fare I found it engaging and a fun read. It makes a good gift. I passed them out at Christmas and have received nothing but positive comments. I recommend it. And you know for a grump fat old white guy injineer to recommend a book or anything it has to be good. I’m working on her to release a Kindle version. As always, YMMV.]

JBLOGGER: Gibbons, Patti (MC1986) praying about a new opportunity

2015-Feb-11

*** begin quote ***

My downloads folder contains some fascinating documents at the moment. The most fascinating is a job description that is tailor-made for me, quite literally a dream job. To do it would be challenging and worthwhile and really good for the kingdom of God. To do it would also require some seriously hard work up front; I’d need help… a lot of help. Then, however, that would yield an amazing opportunity to serve. It feels God-sized. It also feels like it would be a terrible thing to get wrong.

So, I’m dusting off the blog to ask for your help – wherever you are, wherever you see this – will you pray about this with me? If you have some encouragement, or some wisdom, or just a like/favorite/comment to share, I’d be grateful to know you’re here. I sincerely believe in the power of community seeking answers together.

JOY: Hoos, Katie [MC????] and Kyle, Trenholm [MC????] engaged

2015-Feb-12

http://www.theknot.com/us/katie-hoos-and-kyle-trenholm-dec-2015

Katie and Kyle
December 5, 2015 in Yonkers, NY, United States

Our StoryHow We Met (according to Katie)

It's hard to pin down the exact moment Kyle and I met... we both have varying accounts and we crossed paths a few times during our college years. But once we did "meet" and started dating, he quickly became impossible to forget.

2007: Freshman year

Standing in line for dinner at one of the Manhattan College cafeteria's, I saw a (handsome) guy with a Fighting Irish tattoo on his arm, and since my brother was a student at Notre Dame, I asked him if it was related to the University. Maybe he was hungry or secretly hates the Irish, but Kyle wanted nothing to do with me. He brushed off my question, saying it wasn't Notre Dame related and walked away.

2008: Sophomore Year

Wing night at the local bar. A group of friends and I went for some beers and wings at Piper's Kilt on 231st St when Kyle introduced himself as our server. He was chatty and friendly, but we barely spoke other than me giving him my order. A few weeks later, he added me on Facebook. Guess he thought I was cute.

2009: Junior Year

After having a few too many drinks with my gal pal (and bridesmaid, Meg) at her beach house, I messaged Kyle on Facebook. We started chatting regularly and by Columbus Day weekend, we decided to go out. After a few dates to Untermyer Park & Gardens in Yonkers and the now-closed Mina's Pizzeria in Ardsley, Kyle asked me to be his girlfriend and I happily accepted.

We've been laughing together ever since.

The Proposal

It was my 25th birthday and a proposal was the furthest thing from my mind.

We had discussed getting engaged for some time, but since we were both new at our jobs and were trying to stabilize our finances, I had mentally put off an engagement until at least the following year.

Even though a coworker joked around all day saying Kyle was going to propose, I brushed it off.
Kyle picked me up on the corner by my office and we drove downtown for dinner at Giardino D'Oro, an Italian restaurant in the Financial District.

After dinner, Kyle said he had another surprise and I assumed we'd be getting dessert...I'm so glad it wasn't.

When we got to the entrance of the Brooklyn Bridge, Kyle said he knew that's where we could catch my favorite view of the Manhattan skyline, so he wanted to walk the bridge for my birthday.

Still clueless, we walked to the first lookout point and I was blown away by the night skyline. I turn around to ask Kyle to borrow his phone to take a picture when he started nervously proposing. He got down on one knee, pulled out the most beautiful ring and asked me to spend my life with him.
In between tears and laughter, I said "yes."

February 11, 2015 Categorized Under : AmeriCorps, Edinburgh, Ileana, Rebuilding A Home.

Hello again faithful readers! Isn’t it crazy how time flies? Since the last time I blogged, we’ve made some serious progress on Edinburgh. A lot of that progress is thanks to some awesome volunteers we had from Manhattan College! Fun fact, did you know that Manhattan College isn’t actually in Manhattan? #jeopardyquestions

Anyways, our volunteers laid hardy the entire week and had the most positive attitude for working in such cold weather. It was a balmy 20 degrees most of the week (looks like they brought the cold with them), but they still kept bright smiles on their faces. Here are some pics!

One of the days for lunch, we rewarded ourselves with some hearty Parkway Po’Boys. For those of you who don’t live in New Orleans, Parkway Po’Boys are pretty much the best thing ever. I always go for the Surf n Turf which is a sandwich that has roast beef and fried shrimp. Totally worth the extra 12 lbs I put on. Now I understand why bears eat extra honey when they hibernate. It’s so they can stay warm! Wait. Is that real or just a Winnie the Pooh thing?

Well faithful readers, that’s all I have for you this week. Tune in next week and I’ll share some updates on how tiling and the bamboo flooring is coming along. Also, I’ll look into that “bears eating honey thing”!

Much Love,

Ileana

JOY: Colantonio, Tracey [MC2010] and Llewellyn, John [MC2011] to wed

2015-Feb-13

http://www.theknot.com/us/tracey-colantonio-and-john-llewellyn-nov-2015

Our "short story"...

In the fall of 2008, John enrolled at Manhattan College on a whim the week before classes started, where Tracey was entering her Junior year. Because all classes were full, the school enrolled him in the only classes left that had space. With Tracey in the school of education and John in the school of business, the only chance to cross paths would be an English class. Luckily. the stars aligned and they both happened to be in the same section of "Short Stories." With Tracey diligently taking notes up front, and John peacefully sleeping in the back, needless to say, her heavy assistance to him was required come exam times. Tracey being a soccer player, and John, a "lacrosse-bro," perhaps they were meant to be, but after that semester, they were inseparable. Four apartments, a 90 lb. pit bull, and tons of graduate school later, John proposed to Tracey on November 1st, 2014 along the East River in New York City. Now they prepare to begin their lifelong journey together. Currently residing in Stamford, Connecticut with their lovable dog Bronx, Tracey works in Manhattan at Hospital for Special Surgery as a Physical Therapist, and John works in Connecticut, brokering the fuel that is used by cargo and cruise ships. They couldn't be happier and more excited to spend their life together and are looking forward to celebrating their first night of marriage with family and friends!

Jesse Dolores is equally motivated.  Dolores a pre-med major at Manhattan College plans to become an orthopedic surgeon.  “Brother Chiulli’s chemistry class gave me a strong foundation for my first semester in college.  I am using all my notes from his chemistry class and I feel well prepared for freshman year,” said Dolores. He credits the rigorous curriculum at Hayes for a successful first semester.  Despite the long hours in chemistry lab, Dolores makes time to pursue his second passion … salsa dancing. It gives him a break from the pressures of a hectic school schedule.

This is a human tragedy.

Careers being wiped out by cataclysmic economic forces.

If there is a villain in this story it’s the callous “leadership” that gets bonuses and raises while their “human resources” go into the dumpster.

And, of course, I see the Gooferment’s Unintended Consequences in this as well.

If the corporate tax rate was zero, then there’d be no rush to move work overseas.

("Corporations are merely tax collectors; not taxpayers. They merely pass their costs along." Lawrence Alan "Larry" Kudlow is an American economist, television personality, and newspaper columnist. August 26, 2014 0830 on WMAL Mornings on the Mall Brian Wilson and Larry O’Connor)

If there was a long term view in both the corporate board rooms and the “District of Corruption”, then there would be these horrific shifts.

For example, if Corporations could only pay salaries and bonuses, in excess of what the US President’s salary is, in the form of annual bonds spread out over 25 years, then we’d see a complete realignment of economic thinking. (If the corporation goes bust in 5 years, think Radio Shack, then I won’t be able to case out. Guess I better think about that!)

Argh!
