POSITRACTION: Better toilets = 82% reduction waterborne diseases

Joe Madiath: Better toilets, better life

In rural India, the lack of toilets creates a big, stinking problem. It leads to poor quality water, one of the leading causes of disease in India, and has a disproportionately negative effect on women. Joe Madiath introduces a program to help villagers help themselves, by building clean, protected water and sanitation systems and requiring everyone in the village to collaborate -- with significant benefits that ripple across health, education and even government.

# - # - # - # - #

*** begin quote ***

Well in India, we have a theory, which is very much accepted by the government bureaucracy and all those who matter, that poor people deserve poor solutions and absolutely poor people deserve pathetic solutions. This, combined with a Nobel Prize-worthy theory that the cheapest is the most economic, is the heady cocktail that the poor are forced to drink. We are fighting against this. We feel that the poor have been humiliated for centuries. And even in sanitation, they should not be humiliated. Sanitation is more about dignity than about human disposal of waste.

*** end quote ***

As a Jasper fat old white guy injineer, I know how important “sanitary engineering” is.

This is a STUNNING project.

Something that we in the USA take completely for granted.

Argh!

JOBIT: Fitzgerald, Thomas James Sr. [MC1943 RIP]

2015-Feb-02

Thomas James Fitzgerald Sr.
Obituary

KINGSTON- Thomas James Fitzgerald, Sr., 92, a 38 year resident of Kingston, passed away peacefully on Jan. 29, 2015, surrounded by loving family.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife of over 68 years, Maureen Margaret (nče Butler) Fitzgerald, almost three years to the day; and by his dear son, James Vincent Fitzgerald, almost one year to the day.

Tom was born on June 22, 1922, and grew up in Manhattan the eldest of Dr. Albion James and Theresa Loretta (nče Dougherty). Fitzgerald’s eight children: William Fitzgerald (deceased), Florentine Fitzgerald (deceased), Theresa Fitzgerald (Kingston), Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Washington, DC), Albion Fitzgerald, Jr. (White Plains, N.Y.), Stanley Fitzgerald (San Jose, Calif.), and Catherine Giordano (Clifton Park). Tom graduated from Xavier High School (Manhattan), earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at Manhattan College, a Master’s degree in Education, and went on to pursue further graduate studies in mathematics.

Tom was a man of many talents, and had multiple successful careers. He taught mathematics for 19 years, initially at Regis High School (Manhattan), and subsequently at Herricks Junior High School in Nassau County, N.Y. In 1963, he started working in a new field called computers as a Systems Engineer, eventually retiring from IBM (Kingston) in 1986.

He went on to work with his sons and daughter at Novadigm in Mahwah, N.J., finally retiring more than a decade later.

In addition to his work, Tom was actively involved at both St. Joseph’s Church (Albany) and St. Brendan’s Church (Brooklyn) Holy Name Societies, St. Joseph’s Church (Kingston) as Usher and Head Usher; St. Mary’s Church (Kingston), and many other Catholic organizations. He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and authored, edited, and distributed their newsletter for 13 years. He was deeply involved in the Christian Coalition of America, and was a dedicated proponent of Right to Life education and legislation, and participated in numerous marches for the cause in Washington, DC.

Tom and Maureen were active with the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Kevin Barry Irish Club, marched numerous times in the Kingston St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and were Grand Marshals in 1998. Many of their children and grandchildren continued the tradition in the years that followed.

In their honor, March 15, 1998, was declared Thomas J. & Maureen M. Fitzgerald Day in Ulster County, and Tom was named Honorary Mayor of Kingston for the day.

In 2009, at the age of 87, Tom self-published an instructional book on mathematics, entitled “Do the Math”.

Tom and Maureen loved to travel, and made numerous trips to Ireland, including Maureen’s homeland of Modeligo, Waterford Co., Ireland. One of Tom’s favorite trips, and a highlight of his life, was a Tiger Cruise with his son, Tom, Jr., aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes (CG 49) in Oct. 1998, from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to her home port in San Diego, Calif., on return from her Persian Gulf combat tour with his son-in-law, Lieutenant Commander M.C. Agresti (Ret.).

He married his sweetheart, Maureen, on Sept. 2, 1943. Tom was a true lover of math, and he and Maureen sure did multiply. The pair had 11 children, 30 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren (and counting).

Tom is survived by his 11 children (G1): Theresa (Medford, N.Y.), Catherine (Washington, DC), Albion (Saddle River, N.J.), Thomas, Jr. (Kingston), Stanley (Kingston), Maureen, Jr. (Kingston), Elizabeth (Washington, DC), William (Saddle Brook, N.J.), Joseph (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), and Florentine (Franklin Lakes, N.J.). Spouses include Susan (James) andShannon (Albion).

Tom and Maureen's 30 grandchildren (G2) are: (Theresa) Gloria, Thomas William, Lisa, Greg, and Christine; (Catherine) Jennifer and Derek, Jr.; (Albion) Gillian; (James) Jennifer, Tara, and James, Jr.; (Thomas, Jr.) Kathleen; (Stanley) Kerrie and Patrick; (Maureen, Jr.) Brigid; (Elizabeth) Catherine and James; (William) James, William, Jr., Shannon, and Marisol, Jr.; (Joseph) Joseph, Jr., Theresa, Christian, and Matthew; and (Florentine) Gabrielle, Ashley, Jessica, Andrew, and Alexandra. Spouses include Kathy Phifer, Harry Greslin, Michael Berger, Jenn Matthews, Michael Leonard, and Dominick Bulfamante.

Tom and Maureen's 23 great-grandchildren (G3) are: [Theresa: (Gloria) Adam, Jr., Mark, Christina, and Brittany; (Thomas William) Hana Kaye, Ethan, and Thomas, Jr.; (Lisa) Emma and Megan; (Gregory) Gavin]; [Catherine: (Jennifer) Naomi and Aiden]; [James: (Jennifer) Sydney, Brooke, and Jake; (Tara) Dominick, Jr. and Adriana]; [Stanley: (Kerrie) Shawn]; [Elizabeth: (Catherine) Julia, Colten, and Jack]; and [Tina: (Gabrielle) Evan and Braiden].

Friends and family may call at Keyser Funeral Home, 326 Albany Ave., Kingston, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church (Kingston) followed by interment at St. Mary's Cemetery (Kingston).

Tell me about your early life; where did you grow up?

I grew up in New York City in a working-class family. I went to Manhattan College in New York City majoring in psychology, and that was really about wanting to know what makes people tick and what drives human nature and motivation. I was really interested in psychology and philosophy and was otherwise not the most attentive student. I went into sales and found myself really struggling to have any passion around the product I was selling. I noticed a lot of companies were buying these things called word processors, and that was really transforming the secretary's productivity. Before the PC was born and came into being around 1982, I started to get into computers.

Joseph T. Steuer, 63, of Blue Bell, chief financial officer and treasurer of the Philadelphia Zoo, died Saturday, Jan. 31, of brain cancer at home.

Mr. Steuer's 14 years with the zoo were a period of growth and change. The institution added exhibits and visitor amenities, renewed its focus on the health and welfare of its animals, advanced the mission of wildlife conservation, and expanded its educational services.

What a combo, top shelf education and experience. Abi Basch has been an educator for a dozen years, the last four at San Francisco’s Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory. The social studies teacher earned her history degree at Brown University.

“My first teaching experience was as a volunteer teaching theater workshops in a women’s prison while still an undergraduate,” Abi, who also holds a graduate degree as a playwright, told me via email. “During that time I also studied abroad in South Africa where I did similar work in prisons and townships. These experiences were incredibly forming for me.”

Abi remembers her roots and the school’s. “Making sure to incorporate the philosophies of the specific orders that founded our school into my lesson plans has been a rewarding challenge. I grew up around Christian Brothers, as my mother worked at Manhattan College for much of my childhood, so I was familiar with and fond of the ideology. I also have enjoyed learning about and being inspired by the incredible work of the Daughters of Charity, and incorporating their ideas into my curricula.”

MOBIT: Cronin, Edward F. Jr. [MCattendee RIP]

2015-Feb-06

http://www.ippolitofuneralhomes.com/?pa

Edward F. Cronin
July 22, 1927 - January 31, 2015

With deep sadness, the family of Edward F. Cronin Jr. shares the news of his passing on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the age of 87, after a long, brave fight against complications from cardiac surgery.

Edward was born in Newark, NJ, the beloved son of the late Edward F. Cronin, Sr. and Margaret (Macho). He was the devoted and loving husband of Marion Cronin (Crawford), with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. They moved to New Providence in 1955, where they raised their five children.

As a young man, Edward earned a full-tuition altar boy scholarship to St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, from which he graduated in 1946. Prior to graduating, Edward proudly served his country in World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy, touring the Pacific from 1945-1946 aboard the USS Cook Inlet. Taking advantage of the GI Bill's educational benefits, he attended Manhattan College and graduated from Newark College of Engineering.

Edward worked at AT&T (Western Electric and AT&T Technologies) for over 40 years, during which time he become one of the project managers involved in the monumental task of laying the first fiber optic cable across the Atlantic Ocean. Out of the office, he served as president of the Stanley S. Homes Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and helped organize technology distribution for individuals with special needs and schools through donations and training. A man of great faith, Edward was a long-time parishioner of Our Lady of Peace Parish. He was an avid sports enthusiast, a keen follower of current events, a financial genius, and - in his more casual moments - a great fan of Italian food.

Edward was a tremendously kind and intelligent man greatly loved by all of his family and friends. Through his selflessness, wisdom, and unending generosity, he was a source of uncountable moments of happiness and love. He carried himself through life with a quiet dignity and devotion to his loved ones that all of his family only hopes to match. He will be remembered by family as the best man that a man could be, and a shining example to always look to

He is survived by his wife Marion and his five children: Christine Cronin of New Providence, Karen Iucci of New Egypt, Patricia L.F. Cronin and her husband Michael Morris of New Providence, Tim Cronin and his wife Jennifer (Minch) of Berkeley Heights and Geraldine Cronin and her husband Mark Luchetti of West Chester, PA. Edward was also the cherished grandfather of 13 grandchildren; Gordon (Baker), Sean and Brendan (Cusack), Amanda and Stephanie (Iucci), Liam and Patrick (Morris), Ryan, Chelsea, Melissa and Lauren (Cronin), and Anna and Erin (Luchetti) and 2 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Thursday Feb 12th from 4- 8 PM at Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial, 646 Springfield Ave, Berkeley Heights. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Peace Church, South St, New Providence on Friday Feb 13th at 10 AM. Entombment will follow at St. Teresa's Mausoleum, Summit. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or the New Providence Rescue Squad.

ENDNOTE: A hard and dangerous world

Bard College student who contracted measles had ridden Amtrak train, New York state officials say
POSTED: 01/30/15, 8:51 PM EST

*** begin quote ***

ALBANY (AP) >> Health officials say a New York college student who now has measles recently traveled across the state on a train. So they want to make people aware while noting that most New Yorkers have been vaccinated against the disease.

The state Health Department said Friday that the Bard College student took a 1:20 p.m. Amtrak train from New York City’s Penn Station to Albany and then to Niagara Falls this past Sunday.

How dumb?

I know I’m accused of being an “anti-vexer” because I expressed concern that Moms were feeling about autism and some suspected linkage to vaccinations.

Having seen first hand the devastation of polio on a young man, and read about the deadliness of highly contagious measles, it seems a no brainer to protect yourself and society.

Perhaps autism has other causes (i.e., one theory is too many vaccinations to early and or close together) or other contributing factors (i.e., pollution; lead contamination; BPA), but in the absence what choice does one really have.

Argh!

It’s a hard and dangerous world out there and stupidity makes it more so.
