Hero cat rescues baby dumped in street by climbing in box to keep it warm in freezing conditions
Jan 15, 2015 12:02 By Jon Livesey

*** begin quote ***

As well as using its long hair and body heat to protect the three-month old tot from sub-zero temperatures, the moggy also raised the alarm by constantly meowing

A long-haired tabby cat has been hailed a hero after finding an abandoned baby in a street and climbing in the box he had been left in to protect him from the cold.

As well as making sure the three-month-old didn't freeze to death, the moggy raised the alarm by crying out to make people aware of the boy's presence.

*** end quote ***

A people say that animals aren’t “smart”.

I don’t know what you’d call this. Maybe “dumb luck”. Or a Guardian Angel.

And what state of mind was the Mom in?

Can’t imagine her circumstances.

Guess they don’t have “save haven” laws in Russia.

But they have better stray cats?

JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973) cites local HG2TG aka Google

2015-Jan-18

John, you wrote, "JR: Yes. There are so many regs and diktats, one is always a “law breaker”!"

Perhaps you or one of the other Jaspers out there can help me. There is a well-known quote (and perhaps more than one) that expresses the idea that the "State" can have ultimate power over everyone simply by setting up such a complex and un-meetable system of laws and regulations that *everyone* will always be in some degree of violation of something and thus subject to punishment unless they "cooperate" with whatever new demand is being levied.

I believe I've actually seen at least two different well-stated expressions of this concept. One, perhaps from "1984" (which I really *should* read for a fourth time probably....) and another from an actual dictatorial real-life politician -- perhaps a Nazi or a Stalinist or an East Euro 1950s' Soviet dictator. There's no simple unique phrasing or set of keywords that I've found that will pop it up on my local Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (aka, "Google") but I'm sure someone out there will remember it and its source.

Best quote that expresses that sense imho is:

“If you give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest of men, I will find something in them which will hang him.” — Cardinal Richelieu

Laff!

Thanks for the comment.

Love the reference to the HG2TG!

Finishing Forty
A year-long journey of perspective about my 40th year of life on Earth

I wish I could go back to college
January 19, 2015
Day 264

*** begin quote ***

Yesterday afternoon, quite unexpectedly, I found myself staring at my college campus for the first time in over 17 years.

The circuitous way this happened is kind of crazy really, but interesting nonetheless.  Andy's Uncle Fai died in October, and their family friend Kathy spoke at the wake and funeral for him.  She gave a beautiful eulogy in the funeral parlor, and was just a very good, kind soul throughout the weekend.  This past week, Kathy's 97-year-old mom died, and though I personally might not have attended this wake otherwise, I really wanted to because of how great Kathy was to Andy's family a few months ago.  And the funeral parlor her mom was waked at?  It was on Broadway in Riverdale, just four blocks south of the Manhattan College campus.  I never would have guessed it would take 17 years and 8 months until I visited my college again, nor that it would have taken the death of my partner's uncle's wife's friend's mother to do it!

*** end quote ***

[JR: I too wish I could go back to college. Sadly, can’t be done. So we continue to trudge on.]

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Kelly's Dad

Good Evening All,

From John Reinke, a while back, we received a prayer request to pray for the success of a very important Final exam for a Masters. Degree being taken by Kelly. She knocked it out of the Ballpark and was very thankful for our prayers.

John shares a request for our prayers for Kelly's Dad who has suffered Gall Bladder attack. Gall Bladder attacks are very painful but don'r always require surgery as was called for by the MDs. Kelly and her Dad have opted for the non-invasive route at this time and have gotten the MDs to agree and step away from surgery.

Please Keep Kelly's Dad in your prayers for a quick and complete recovery without surgery which they feel can lead to other complications. As they wait out the healing process, please keep Kelly in your prayers as well.

Thank you. God Bless.

Subject: Dad's Episode

Just giving everyone an update on my dad's prognosis.  He and I opted out of having his gallbladder remove for now despite the pain he had last night.

It is his first gallstone episode and we want to do a wait-and-see by changing to a low-fat diet. Doctor was too quick to want to remove his gallbladder which can cause further complications down the line. I swear doctors are now pushing for unnecessary surgeries just to make money by exaggerating the possibilities.

What happen to getting at root of problem and not just being so extreme or put bandages on everything.  Doc finally agreed to the wait and see too.

I've been up all night and we are leaving the final appointment of the day. I'm going to finally get some sleep now.

Thanks for everyone's concern.

Francis Volino
Obituary

VOLINO
Francis Anthony, 77, of Glen Rock went peacefully home to the Lord on Monday, January 19, 2015. He is reunited in heaven with his beloved wife of 52 years, Kathryn M. Volino, who passed away in August, 2014.

Born to Dr. Liborio A. and Palma A. Volino on September 13, 1937, Frank was raised in Yonkers, NY. He lived briefly in Scarsdale, NY, before relocating to Glen Rock, NJ, where he resided for 45 years.

He earned a B.B.A. in Accounting from Manhattan College, where he also served in the Army Reserve.

His successful career as a Wall Street accountant/analyst spanned over 25 years. He worked for 20 years at Merrill Lynch before accepting the position of Chief Financial Officer of the Ronald McDonald House of New York. Frank found great passion and purpose throughout his 17 years at the Ronald McDonald House. He especially enjoyed the opportunity to regularly interact with patients and families residing there. Frank retired in December of 2007.

Frank was a devoted family man who derived great joy from spending time with his wife, Kathy, his children, grandchildren, and extended family. Frank and Kathy loved to travel, host dinner parties for family and friends, play tennis, garden, and enjoy NYC together. They loved to dance and spent much of their time on the dance floor at events and celebrations. They took Italian language classes and enjoyed applying what they learned during visits to Italy. One of their favorite places was Montauk, NY, where Frank loved boating, fishing, and the beach.

He took pleasure and found great satisfaction in home improvement projects. Nothing was too challenging. He had an incredible gift for fixing things, be it toys, bikes, electronics, even broken hearts.
Frank adored his grandchildren and cultivated a special relationship with each. He loved attending their sporting events, recitals, and school events, and he was a constant source of encouragement in their lives.

Frank was known to all for his authentic, humble, and affable personality. His warm smile and sparkling eyes made him especially easy to talk to. He couldn't help but make friends wherever he went. During retirement, Frank used his interpersonal gifts to serve as a Stephen Minister, providing one-on-one emotional and spiritual care to those in need. Frank was an active member, over the years, of St. Catherine's Church in Glen Rock, St. Mary's in Pompton Lakes, and more recently, Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River, where he proudly guided his grandson through the RCIA journey. He profoundly demonstrated his faith throughout his cancer battle. His grateful heart, through his trying circumstances, touched the lives of all who cared for him up until his final days.

Frank is survived by his son Francis B. Volino and his wife Kathleen, their children Alyse, Benjamin, and Harrison of Mahwah, NJ; his daughter Christine M. Hannon, her husband Kevin and their children Craig, Christopher, and Kyle of Houston TX; and his brother Dr. Ronald J. Volino of Yonkers, NY.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 4-8 PM at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, (vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff, NJ. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 AM at Church of the Presentation, 271 W. Saddle River Rd., Upper Saddle River. Interment will be private.
Contributions in Frank's memory may be made to the Ronald McDonald House of NY, 405 East 73rd St., New York, NY 10021.

My big sister, Caitlin, was diagnosed with leukemia when she was only 3 years old. She spent a lot of time in the hospital. It was a hard time. She was in and out of the hospital for 2 and 1/2 years. But Caitlin got better! She is *almost* five years cancer free! This is a BIG deal!! I'm shaving my head to honor her and to raise money for childhood cancer research! Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So I decided to do something about it by raising money for cures. Now I need your help! Will you make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference!

FROM Margaret Martin

And now for the grand daddy of thank yous! Words really cannot express my feelings of gratitude and thanks for the generosity of our dear friends Thomas Cataldo and Tara Benedict Cataldo! If the world had more people like you, it would be such a better place! Your kindness and thoughtfulness will never be forgotten. We are more attuned to the perils of childhood cancer because it touched our family. But we are the fortunate ones. Caitlin came out on the other side, in remission, and with minimal side effects. It astounds me that I know (not know of!), but know too many CHILDREN that have died. Others are on hospice. No child, no family deserves this. So THANK YOU for your nothing short of amazing donation to Liam as he shaves his head with St Baldrick's to raise funds for childhood cancer research! We love you guys! heart emoticon

MC Offers Education to Former Inmates At College’s Discretion
The Quadrangle by Sean McIntyre

The New York Times estimated that 70 million Americans who have criminal records face challenges when applying to colleges. Some college applications, including Manhattan College, include questions that surround criminal convictions that can possibly hinder a student’s acceptance during this year’s admissions cycle

“A person’s past mistakes are discussed on a case-by-case basis.  Before all else, our priority is the safety of our students, staff and administration,” Troy Cogburn, director of transfer admissions, said. “If there are no concerns with that, then we will move forward with reviewing the application for admission.”

Dana Rose, director of admissions, said that both the Common Application and the Manhattan College application require applicants to disclose whether or not they have been adjudicated guilty or convicted of a misdemeanor, felony or other crime. The applications additionally require applicants to provide any disciplinary violations while in high school.

“We would never admit a student who could jeopardize the welfare of our community,” Rose said.

The safety for the Manhattan College community is the utmost importance, but the Lasallian principles also include, “respect for human dignity, an emphasis on ethical conduct, and commitment to social justice.” Associate Professor of Sociology Cory Blad, Ph.D., believes that individuals with criminal records should be able to attend MC.

Robert R. Caputi, 90, dies; was Huntington attorney and Democratic leader

Robert R. Caputi, a former Huntington zoning, land use and real estate attorney and longtime local Democratic leader, died Jan. 18 of natural causes at the Visiting Nurse Hospice in East Northport.
He was 90.

Over his career, Caputi, admitted to the New York Bar Association in July 1948, served as deputy town attorney for Huntington, Democratic town leader and Huntington delegate to the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City that nominated Lyndon B. Johnson.

Suffolk County Democratic chairman and Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer called him a friend, adviser and an icon who helped develop the party in the county.

"He was a Democrat when it was not very popular to be a Democrat in Suffolk County," he said. "He was one of the true leaders who paved the way for current elected officials and active Democrats in the county."

Caputi held a number of other posts and honors, including serving as New York State special deputy attorney general, election frauds division, from 1957 to 1958; member of the first board of directors for Suffolk Off-Track Betting Corp.; and the longest standing member of Huntington Crescent Club. He was also a longtime parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Centerport.

Caputi was born June 17, 1924, in Manhattan and grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. After graduating from St. John's Prep high school in Brooklyn, he served in the Army from March 1943 to February 1946 in such places as New Guinea, the Philippines and Korea. After the service, he attended Manhattan College, then law school at St. John's University.

He married Elizabeth Ann McNamara on Sept. 8, 1951, and the couple moved to Huntington in 1954, where they raised eight children. He established his law practice in the town in 1960. Some of his notable projects in the town were getting approval for the independent bookstore, Book Revue.

His daughter Kathleen Caputi, of Northport, said her father was a man of great integrity and generosity, often offering a seat at the family's holiday table to someone who had no place to go.
"He passed that on to us in terms of doing the right thing and that reputation is everything," she said.

He is also survived by his wife; children, Margaret Ellen Felpo of Huntington Station, Jane Elizabeth Caputi of Highland Beach, Florida, Mary Elizabeth Caputi of Manhattan, Jacqueline Teresa Caputi of Huntington, Robert Gerard Caputi of Huntington and Daniel Edward Caputi of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by daughter Anne Marie Caputi.

A funeral was held Wednesday at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Centerport. He was cremated.

The family requests donations be made to the Visiting Nurse Hospice House, 101 Laurel Rd., East Northport, NY 11731.

This is a rough story to watch no matter your political views ... war is hell on all sides. This is a movie that liberals, conservatives, libertarians, and Sheeple should appreciate.

I teared up during the movie and resolved to be more vocal about these girls and boys sacrificing themselves for the politicians, bureaucrats, and Crony Capitalists benefit.

Like the “Wounded Warrior” commercials, this movie torqued me up.

I’m a little L libertarian, who is anti-war, pro-life, and pro-choice. When the bad guys come here, then we can use force. If they seriously threaten us, then we should NUKE them. BUT, we better be sure that this is a “Just War”. AND, we all should pay for it; not borrow the money from China to make the military - industrial complex, that Ike warned us about, rich.

Argh!

Bring the girls and boys home NOW!

Have a foreign policy like Switzerland with a defense to match.

“Only way to win is not to play at all” -- from the movie ‘War Games’
