POSITRACTION: Can we understand what it is to have clean, safe water

THANKFUL NATION
Why you should be thankful for clean, safe water
By Bill Horan

*** begin quote ***

I serve as president of Operation Blessing International, a global humanitarian charity. I travel to dozens of countries each year where our teams work to save lives and alleviate suffering, much of it caused by contaminated water—water that looks harmless, but contains nasty germs, disease-causing bacteria and viruses, and parasites. These contaminants are invisible to the naked eye, but poisonous to the people drinking the water, especially the very young and very old.

We are so incredibly fortunate here in the United States, where no matter how poor, everyone has access to perfectly safe water.

*** end quote ***

Seems so obvious, but taken for granted.

As a tin foil hat, I am prepared for the day, which I hope never comes, when I can’t assume water is safe.

In other countries, this is just another risk they have to take.

In ingineering scruple, “sanitary engineering” was the butt of a lot of jokes.

But all jokes aside, it’s life or death in some places.

Mr. Robert Emmett Link Jr.
Obituary
Posted byStaff Writer
Friday, January 2, 2015

Robert Emmett Link, Jr., 84, of Ellijay Georgia, died December 28th 2014.

He was born to the late Robert and Marie Link, Oct. 27th 1930 in the Bronx, New York. He married Eileen O’Keeffe in 1954 and they lived together in Great Neck and Oyster Bay, NY, before relocating to Ellijay, GA, in 2012 to live with his loving and devoted daughter Nora.

He was raised in Riverdale in the Bronx with his older sister Madeleine, and retold many a wondrous story of their adventures in that then wilderness, including skating on the Hudson River. His father died when Bob was seven. His uncle George Link, Jr., was a great aid to the family and held a special place in his heart. Bob attended Fordham Prep High School and went onto earn his BS in Electrical Engineering at Manhattan College.

Although he had the opportunity to pursue many fields, he selected engineering because of the tremendous role engineers had played during WWII and his sense of duty and country. Engineering was held in high esteem at the time with New York State establishing its first special license plate for professional engineers. He was one of the first registered professional engineers in the state and proudly displayed his PE-68 plate.

After college, Bob joined Sperry Rand at its Lake Success Complex, the former temporary United Nations headquarters. There he worked on the famous UNIVAC computer. In the late 1950s and early 60s he worked with NASA on the Mercury Space Mission, developing the space capsule navigational systems. In 1962 he was stationed in Australia to track John Glenn’s historic Atlas 6 orbit, using a radar system he helped develop. He worked for Sperry Rand for 37 years before retiring. At his retirement the CEO described Bob as the most honest and ethical man in the defense industry.

Bob was a great athlete playing many sports as well as captaining his tennis team while at Manhattan College. His real love was playing basketball. He would spend many hours at Van Cortland Park where on occasion he would meet and play pick-up games with Bob Cousy. His love of sports never died and in years to come he won countless industrial league championships in basketball and softball. Bear Mt. and Lake Placid were where he learned to ski and where for a brief time he was an instructor. He taught swimming while a counselor at Candle Stick Lake. He loved the ocean and would spent many a day at Jones Beach.

He was a humble man of many talents and contrasts. He was fond of quoting Marcus Aurelius: “Our life is what our thoughts make it.” At ease with quantum mechanics and a lover of math, he was equally attentive to growing his beloved flowering “dinner plate” dahlias and to painting landscapes.

With four children by the time he was thirty, he drove used cars and took no vacations. He drilled into all his five children the importance of education. He was stern yet fair. Dinner conversations were limited to solving math problems and playing “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral?” He was proud of each and every one of his five children’s accomplishments.

Deeply religious, his faith never wavered. He was greatly concerned about the welfare of others. He sat on many religious and secular boards. He was especially honored to serve on The George Link, Jr. Foundation for thirty years and the George Link, Jr. Charitable Trust for 10 years. He did all he could to take care of the most needy among us. He worked hard to help establish the first shelter for battered women in the Diocese of Rockville Center and supported this and other charities until his death.

He adored his wife Eileen and devoted most of his retirement to taking care of her through her many serious illnesses. He was devoted to his mother and mother-in-law spending most days with them during the last years of their lives.

Bob is survived by his five children: Nora, Kerry, Alannah, Patricia and Robert, and three grandchildren: Kathryn, Isabelle and Robert. He was predeceased by his beloved sister Madeleine, a Carmelite nun of 50 years, St. Baptista; and by his wife Eileen, whom he adored his entire life.A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 11:00 am at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Blue Ridge with Father John Conway officiating. Interment will follow in the Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY at a later date.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 2-4 pm at the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Pruitt Cares Foundation, Pruitt Cares Foundation 6050 Appalachian Hwy, Blue Ridge, GA 30513, http://www.pruittcares.org.

Arrangements entrusted to the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home of Blue Ridge. You may send condolences to the family and sign the guest registry at www.cochranfuneralhomes.com.

PHILIP WILLIAMS
Obituary

Philip J. Williams passed away on 31 December 2014 at the age of 95.

He was born on 25 March 1919 in Andretta, Italy. In Marchof 1921, with his mother Concetta, he sailed to America through Ellis Island to join his father Angelo. Philip was an excellent student and exceptional athlete; later in life he was inducted into the New Rochelle Boy's Club Inspiration Hall of Fame.

He worked his way through college attending classes at Manhattan College, New York University, and finished his engineering degree at Cornell University under the government V-12 program. After graduation, he went on active duty in the Navy as an engineering officer during WWII. He served on a refueling vessel in the Atlantic and weather patrol in the Pacific.

After the war, Phil held a variety of engineering positions; he designed prosthetics for the VA, helped pioneer honeycomb structures, and designed computer and office furniture hardware. He excelled in each and holds many patents for his work.

Philip is predeceased by his parents, Angelo and Concetta Guglielmo Williams, his beloved wife Maria, sisters Theresa and Catherine, and brother John. He is survived by his son Philip (wife Mary), his daughter Loretta (husband Helmut), sisters Yolanda and Gloria, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Philip was a long and active member of the Knights of Columbus, having joined in 1948. He was a devoted husband and father and faithful and active Church parishioner.

He lovingly cared for his wife for many years before her passing in 2009.

He loved sports, having coached both baseball and basketball. Throughout the years he wrote untold numbers of short stories, many for his grand and great grandchildren - adventures, mysteries, heart-warming tales, most often ending with an important life lesson. Philip lived a full, productive and good life.

[JR: Attendees are recognized on the theory "if it's important to some to mention in an obit, then we can spare a few prayers". Perhaps, the time at MC was both formative and important to our comrade. And, imho, WW2 interrupted many plans. A good many who went never came back and maybe those that did had new priorities. In this case, he grew up in the Great Depression and WW2. Reading his obit, he’s a Jasper in so many ways. Maybe some of Alma Mater was in his soul if not his wherewithall. The fact that Alma Mater is mentioned means someone thought it was important. If so, so do I.]

James Priolo, P.E.Director of Technical Services

Jim Priolo is the director of technical services, responsible for ensuring technical excellence and code compliance throughout the company’s portfolio of projects. Mr. Priolo has over 35 years of design experience with all aspects of building mechanical systems in new and retrofit projects. His expertise includes the design and commissioning of building management system controls for complex HVAC systems installed in state-of-the-art acute care hospitals and universities. He has worked on a wide range of projects.

Recently, Mr. Priolo managed a project for the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York that received an ARRA grant to upgrade its mechanical infrastructure including upgrading the building management system. The hospital, founded in 1930, has undertaken significant additions and renovations. Designing the BMS upgrade required his team to perform extensive field surveys to identify the existing conditions and develop strategies to ensure the new controls delivered energy savings. As a result, the necessary mechanical repairs were included in the project as well as detailed control drawings and sequences of operation. In order to meet the grant schedule requirements, the project was bid as two phases to meet its deadline. Mr. Priolo studied mechanical engineering and received a bachelor of engineering degree from Cooper Union and a mster of engineering degree from Manhattan College. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of New York.

As a lawyer, he handled the Diocese Of Brooklyn for many years. He was a Runner who never lost interest in the Manhattan College Track Team and its' accomplishments. He told a good story and could always make you smile. Kevin's Pro Bono work here, in Puerto Rico and Africa will be remembered by many.

Please keep in your prayers Kevin, his Wife Mary, their Children Christine, Elisa and Sean as they mourn the loss of their loved one. 2015-Jan-05

Good Morning  CIC,

I have just read the Week 52 edition of Jasper Jottings and saw that you had posted a Linked-In item on John McGarvey (‘77).  John “Harvey” McGarvey was my Resident Assistant at Ives Hall in West Hill my freshman year.  Our Resident Director that year was none other than Bro. Thomas Scanlon, who would go on to lead the college as President for many years.  John had to deal with a majority freshman contingent in Ives that year with all that entails.  I remember once he had all of us freshman dump buckets of water on one of his unsuspecting “ friends” and fellow RA.  John was generally helpful as an RA as long as you didn’t bother him too much.   He was very focused at the time on his next career move especially the second semester of his senior year.

RE: Sir Kevin M. Kearney, Knight Of The Order Of The Holy Sepulcher

Good Evening,

John Nason shared the Announcement by this 1000 year old Order that dates back to the First Crusade and I hope that in sharing it with you I am not breaking a trust. Kevin was a private man in the good work that he did, his devotion and dedication to the Church. A devotion shared by his wife, Lady Mary. I think Kevin would want you to read about the Order if for no other reason than that we can all learn something from the good The Order Of The Holy Sepulcher do and have done over more than Nine Hundred Years. This good man lived his belief. I am certain that those who knew Kevin felt better for it. The Order will be forming an Honor Guard at the Mass Of Christian Burial on Wednesday and they sent out a release to that effect. When you have a moment, read of the Order Of The Holy Sepulcher, and say a prayer for Sir Kevin, Lady Mary and their Family. We have lost " One of the good ones." Thank you. God Bless.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Kevin M. Kearney, a partner in the law firm of Wingate, Kearney and Cullen, was celebrated Jan. 7 at St. Francis de Sales Church, Belle Harbor.

The main celebrant of the funeral Mass was Msgr. Otto L. Garcia, a long-time friend.

Kearney, 61, died Jan. 3 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

A graduate of Manhattan College, 1974, and St. John’s University School of Law, 1977, Kearney represented the Diocese of Brooklyn for more than 37 years on various legal matters, as did his late father, John Kearney.

He has been engaged in representation, education and litigation in all aspects of legal issues facing not-for-profit and religious. Additionally, he regularly counseled religious, charitable and academic institutions in regulatory, tax, real estate, trust and estate and general corporate matters.

A frequent lecturer and a regular panel participant in the annual Diocesan Wills and Estates Seminar, Kearney was a member of the Brooklyn and New York State Bar Associations and the Catholic Lawyers Guild.

He was a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre and has served on the New York State Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Legal Advisory Committee. He was a Director of Concern Worldwide US, an international human relief organization for which he has traveled extensively in reviewing projects in Asia, Africa and Central America.

Kearney is a former president of the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn as well as the Emerald Association of Long Island and was active with Futures in Education.

An ardent runner at Nazareth R.H.S., Brooklyn, and Manhattan College, Kearney ran several New York City Marathons and was a member of the Rockaway Gliders.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth, and their children Christine, Elisa, and Sean; and his brothers John and James.

Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.

[JR: Are you sure that you didn’t have a book outstanding from the Library, forgot that Health class you were supposed to take, or maybe one of the adjunts forgot to submit your grade. (All reasons why Masiello is NOT the only one to be “exposed”.) I pray that none of my EE projects, exams, or grades ever get investigated. Mike — McEneney, Mike (MC1953) — was unable to find you on the roster. So where were you that you just discovered a July posting. I guess you don’t self-Google. I’m too insecure not to.]

ENDNOTE: The handicap placard bring out the anal sphincters

2015-Jan-10

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/fl-disabled-tag-20150102-story.html

Parking lot vigilantes abuse woman with 'invisible' disability
By David Fleshler Sun Sentinel

*** begin quote ***

But none of this would be obvious to anyone seeing a normal-looking woman parking her car in a disabled spot. The notes left on her car say things like this: You look perfectly able to walk. You don't need to be parking here. Let someone else use the spot.

"I can't go out and tell everybody 'look I parked here because I had brain cancer and I can't remember where I park'," she said. "It's not right. I would never so that to anybody."

Her mother is outraged by the comments, the vandalism, the general display of ill will toward her daughter who has been through a fearsome illness and course of treatment.

"I get so angry," she said. "What right do these people have? Just because you don't have crutches or a wheelchair doesn't mean you're not disabled. There are so many people who have disabilities that don't show. Now she's got a smashed side mirror."

*** end quote ***

Who died and left these bozos the “parking lot police”?

My sainted wife had a handicap placard for the last five years of her life.

She’d have good days when she looked like a million bucks and the next day she’d be in the ICU.

They never did figure out what was wrong. Tremendous swings in hemoglobin and platelets.

Some days she’d be fine going into the grocery store and staggering out like a drunk. Not mentally impaired; just weak as a sick baby.

So, I never judge handicap placard holders. I’m sure my fellow Jaspers wouldn’t.

But it seems there are a lot of anal sphincters out there!

Argh!
