On his blog, Tribe explains that he worked hard to get as much use
out of the pass as he could, staying up late to drive to different
Olive Garden locations before their 10 p.m. closing time and
spilling soup all over the backseat of his car as he sped around,
trying to share as much free pasta with the world as possible
during the seven weeks that the pass was valid.
When he decided to share pasta with the homeless, Tribe said he
got a “incredible” lesson in generosity:
I was cruising around looking for someone homeless that I could
give some pasta to. I finally found one sleeping in a park. I
debated on whether or not it would be a good idea to wake her up,
but in the end I decided to do it. I approached her and asked if
she was hungry and would like some Olive Garden. She thanked me
for the pasta and said she was going to share it with her friends.
First of all, the initial thought of someone who has nothing was
to share it with someone else–that’s pretty incredible. I asked
where her friends were and she said behind that wall and motioned
in the direction of a large wall. I walked over there and peeked
around the corner and saw several people there. I went back to the
car and got a few more bags of pasta and took it on over to them.
I’m still blown away that the first thought of the lady receiving
the pasta was to share with her friends.

I sent you the reply that is copied below. I was hoping you’d be able to include in this week’s JJ in the hopes it might bring some old WRCM listeners or colleagues “out of the woodwork" - but see that it was not included. Any particular reason - or did you spike me because I commented on your skepticism over the president's birthplace? :-)

Did want to comment on WRCM. I was involved with the station throughout my four years at alma mater, Fall '68 - Spring '72. When I arrived the station facilities were on an upper floor of De la Salle Hall, but moved to Thomas Hall shortly thereafter. The station was, as described, a carrier current station. During my years there was significant expansion to get transmitters in all of the dorms. This included the West Hill campus (the old sanitarium) in Fieldston. West Hill included some outside, overhead power lines which expanded the coverage area. You could sometimes hear the station driving north on the Thruway/Major Deegan around Moshulu Parkway. Club football was also enjoying a resurgence at the time and WRCM frequently provided play by play coverage of the away games. The cafeteria food service providers were often sponsors of the coverage and there were frequently clever limericks written as “commercials" for the food service sponsor. There were several on air marathons - including one from
the lounge of Jasper Hall. For those who remember the “No Say-No Pay” demonstration against a tuition increase in the spring of 1970, WRCM provided extensive coverage from “Jasper Liberation City" on the Quad. Those were heady times... I’d never heard anything of an FCC crackdown before this story. It is truly sad to hear that the station has gone silent.

First all, if I “spiked” everyone who disagrees with me, there’d be nothing here. I really didn’t see your submission otherwise it would have been in there. Don’t get enough input, so I always wonder if anyone reads this.
Then the radio station is a sad story. But if the students don’t care, not much anyone can do.
Finally, with respect to my “tin foil hat”, I don’t know where the President was born or much else about him. There are just “questions” that deserve an answer. Like did he claim “foreign student” status to get in to these various schools. What’s wrong with that question and why no answer? Remember, I’m a “proofer”; not a “birther”. :-) Subtle difference.

Cleveland, Ohio (June 20, 2006)- Jack Powers, former executive director of the National Invitation Tournament, Manahttan College Director of Athletics, and Manhattan College Men's Basketball head coach and player, has been chosen as the recipient of the 25th NACDA/NIT Athletics Director Award.
Powers will receive his award at the 41st Annual Convention of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), June 20-23. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 21, at the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon. The Convention is being held at the Sheraton and Marriott Hotels in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Jack Powers has been executive director of the National Invitation Tournament since 1988. He had previously spent nine years as the athletics director at his alma mater, Manhattan College. In that time, Jasper athletics experienced tremendous growth in both the men and women's programs due to Powers' efforts. During his tenure, Powers was also a member of the Executive Councils of the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America; and was president of the Metropolitan Basketball Association, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and the Tri-State Soccer League. Additionally, Powers was Manhattan's representative to the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, the sponsoring body of the NIT.
Powers began his career as a high school basketball coach, but returned to his alma mater as the head men's basketball coach in 1968. He led the team for 10 seasons, posting a record of 142-114. In 1973, the Jaspers won the ECAC Holiday Festival and made four appearances in the NIT. These accomplishments were achieved without a home court as Manhattan played their home games at Madison Square Garden. After leaving Manhattan, Powers paced the sidelines nine more times as the head coach of the NIT All Stars.
The recipient of numerous awards, Powers was inducted into the Manhattan College Hall of Fame, Catholic High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, Brooklyn's Old Timer Hall of Fame, Brooklyn's Sports Foundation and the Mamaroneck High School Hall of Fame.
Powers earned his bachelor's degree at Manhattan, where he was captain of the basketball team his team senior year. He led the Jaspers to the NCAA tournament twice and the NIT once. He completed his collegiate career with 1,139 points and was a 1958 draft pick of the Syracuse Nationals. He also earned his master's degree from Hunter College.
On receiving word of his award, Powers said, "I would like to thank NACDA and Mike Cleary, NACDA's executive director, for selecting me to be the recipient of the 2006 NACDA/NIT Athletics Administrators Award. For the past 19 years as the executive director of the NIT, I have had the privilege to present this prestigious award to many giants in the field of athletics administration. This year, I am honored to join the ranks of these successful administrators who have made a positive impact on many student-athletes. Once again, I thank you for having considered me deserving of this award."

James D. Waters, 86, of Lancaster, PA, died on December 13, 2014.
Born and raised in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Yorkville, Jim lived in New York for 83 of his 86 years. He attended Manhattan College, graduating with a B.B.A. in Labor Management and later earned an M.A. in History from New York University. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he served as a weatherman. He worked for the New York Department of Labor for 27 years.
He lived with his wife Mary and their children in the Inwood neighborhood on the Northern tip of Manhattan where he was active in the Church of the Good Shepherd, and its amateur dramatic troupe, the Paulist Players.
He later moved with his family to White Plains, where he was a parishioner of the Church of St. Bernard, lending his fine bass voice to the choir.
Jim summered on Fire Island for 46 years, enjoying the simple, wild beauty of the Atlantic. He was an avid cyclist and a train enthusiast and he traveled extensively, both in the United States and in Europe. A child of the Great Depression, he was a practical man and not prone to excess. It is likely that this obituary has itself already strayed into "excessive" territory. But for all his practicality, he had the distinctive aesthetic of an artist. When he was younger, he painted. Sometimes his children or his home. Sometimes a flower or a ray of light falling across a table. As he grew older, his hands shook and he no longer painted. His works hang in the homes of his children now, reminders of the beauty he saw in the world and in them.
We will miss his stories, his generous heart and his steadfast, unshakable faith in the goodness of people and the blessings in his life.
Jim is survived by his three children, Thomas J. Waters of Lancaster, PA; Mary Waters-Sayer of Dover, MA; and Kathleen Bunshoft of San Francisco, CA; and six grandchildren, Ellen, Kathleen, Nolan, Mary, Liam and Elizabeth. Services with interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice & Community Care https://www.hospiceconnect.org/give.

John Brosnan, born November 16, 1934, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2014.
A rosary service will be held 6 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4250 Bosque Boulevard, Waco, followed by visitation with the family at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 17, at Saint Jerome's Catholic Church in Hewitt.
John was born in Bronx, New York. to Margaret and Thomas Brosnan. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School, received a B.S. from Manhattan College, and an M.A. from Columbia University.
John married Katherine Morrison of Irvington, New York on February 16, 1957.
John worked for New York State, General Electric and M&M Mars. He retired from Mars in 1984 and ran his own consulting firm afterward.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine; sons, Michael of Fremont, California, Thomas and wife, Meg, of Cupertino, California; William and wife, Joan, of Reno, Nevada; and Richard and wife, Patricia, of Tomball, Texas; as well as seven grandchildren, Christopher, Nina, Sonia, Erin, Katherine, Alan and Lucia.

Edward “Buddy” Joseph Woerner died on December 14, 2014 at his home. He was 81.
Born on November 22, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Edward and Martha Woerner.
Mr. Woerner graduated from Power Memorial High School and Manhattan College with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.
He was married on October 18, 1958 to Alice Madison. They lived on Long Island.
He served in the US Army from November 1953 to November 1955. He worked for Empire City Subway Corporation, a subsidy of AT&T, which later became Verizon. His career as a Professionally Licensed Civil Engineer spanned 30 years. He retired in 1998. In New York, he was a member of the Notre Dame Catholic Church.
In 2004, he and his wife moved to Easton Club East. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time at Easton Club East.
In his younger years, Mr. Woerner ran a marathon, taught his kids to cross country ski, and biked the family across Long Island.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice, and his four children, Maryalice Achbach, Matthew Woerner, Maureen Brady and Martin Woerner, and his 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Rita Schrader.

Obituary
John Aloysius Martin, a banker in Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Albuquerque for many years, passed away Dec. 13, he was 92.
He and his four siblings-Tom, Roberta, George and Pat--grew up in El Rito, between AbiquĦu and Ojo Caliente.
His father, George Martin, had come to New Mexico before statehood. John Martin's mother, Margaret Allen Martin, was an Irish nurse who had come to Santa Fe to work at St. Vincent Hospital. After the couple married, they lived in El Rito.
George Martin, a graduate of Manhattan College, had been appointed as the first president of the Spanish American Normal School there (now Northern New Mexico College) because of his knowledge of many languages. After a change of administration at the state, he lost his job and the family moved to Pueblo, Colo., where John was born in 1922.
After returning to El Rito, George Martin became a partner in the Sargent general store. He subsequently bought out Sargent; later his son Tom Martin and grandson Greg Martin ran the store until it closed in the early years of this century.
Margaret Martin worked as a nurse in El Rito.
The Martins also acquired a ranch, later managed by their son Pat, daughter-in-law JoAnn, and grandchildren Mike and Tim. They were members of the San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic parish.
John Martin and his siblings attended the Normal School in El Rito. They worked on the ranch, rode their horses in the mountains, ice skated on the pond near their house, even set up an old truck engine to make a ski lift in El Rito Canyon.
He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1949 with a major in Spanish and a minor in business. One of his professors was Rubin Cobos, author of the dictionary of Northern New Mexican Spanish. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in Texas, where he translated for Spanish-speaking recruits.
His first banking job was with Albuquerque Federal Savings and Loan.
He and Barbara McCain were married in 1951. Their two sons, Meade and Christopher, were born in Albuquerque. In 1964 John Martin joined the USAID Alliance for Progress, whose goal was to encourage the growth of a middle class in Latin America. The family spent almost four years living in El Salvador. Upon returning to New Mexico, the family lived in Santa Fe. J
ohn Martin was a loan officer at First National Bank of Santa Fe, president of United Savings and Loan in Los Alamos, Santa Fe branch manager for Albuquerque Federal, and on the board of Charter Bank for Savings. After retiring from the banking industry, he worked as a real estate agent with Jim Walsh's Adobe Realty.
In 2012, the couple moved from their house near the Santa Fe Plaza to Ponce de Le˘n retirement home, where John Martin made many new friends among the residents and staff who appreciated him for his kindness and wit, joining legions of friends from across the state and around the world.
He died from complications of a stroke, with his family present. Barbara, his wife of 63 years; sons Meade and Chris; daughters-in-law Jill and Robin; grandchildren Laura, Elliott, Sophie; and many other relatives survive him.
Rosary will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 21 at San Juan Nepomuceno church in El Rito. Funeral will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 22 at Cristo Rey church in Santa Fe. Burial will be at 11:15 a.m., Dec. 23 at the National Cemetery. Rivera Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements: 505-753-2288. Instead of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Empty Stocking Fund.

I am saddened to share with you the passing of Ann Burke's Mom. Mrs. Burke was called home this morning. She has been in our prayers these past few weeks and we prayed for the best. Ann shared a couple of thoughts. First, " Thank you all for your prayers and kind thoughts." Second, " Prayer works," Mrs. Burke was spared the ordeal of long suffering. Third, " She was with them for 88 1/2 years," and that was special. Ann asks that we keep up the prayers, especially for her Dad. Josephine S. Gorman, of Somers, NY died on December 16, 2014 at the Seabury Home in Cortlandt Manor, NY where she joyfully resided for the last two years of her life. Josephine was the embodiment of love and compassion, deep spirituality, an angel on earth who touched the heart of all who knew her, it was Josephine. Josephine was 94 years young. Beloved wife of the late William J. Gorman who predeceased her in 2000. Loving mother of Patricia Rowan (Joseph), William J. Gorman (Dorothy), the late Richard W. Gorman (Cynthia), and Marilyn Entwistle (Paul Dinter), she lived for many years in Yonkers before moving to Somers. She is survived by her 10 cherished grandchildren, John, Carolyn, Billy, Jennifer, Greg, Paul, Kim, Christian, Caitlin & Tara and 8 great-grandchildren.
Born in NYC on May 11, 1920, she graduated from Good Counsel College in White Plains, NY in 1941 and soon after married her beloved husband, Bill. Josephine was a devoted educator who taught at Elizabeth Ann Seton Academy in Riverdale, NY, St. Barnabas School in Woodlawn and the Yonkers schools for many years. She went on to receive a Masters in Counseling at Manhattan College in Riverdale and finished her years in Yonkers as a School Counselor, retiring in 1982.
Her family will receive friends at Holy Name of Mary Church, 110 Grand St., Croton-on-Hudson, NY Thursday from 3 - 5 and 7 - 9 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 AM. Internment: Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Phelps Hospice, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591.

Dr. Celano graduated from Marist College with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1978, earned his Master of Arts in Reading Education in 1985 from Manhattan College, attended Hofstra University to earn his Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration in 1990, and in 2009 received his Doctor of Education in Educational Administration and Supervision from St. John’s University.
He began his teaching career in 1978 in Poughkeepsie and then in the Bronx. In 1985 he became a teacher at Calhoun High School, where he was later selected to be Assistant Principal at Grand Avenue Middle, in the same district and eventually Principal in 1997.

Shortly after his birth on November 17, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, Jim's parents, C. George and Margaret Wilson Hamilton, immigrants from Scotland, moved to Staten Island with his sister of dear memory, Mary Hamilton Cahalane. All precede him in death.
At 17, he joined the Marine Corps, completed paratrooper training, and served in the Pacific, achieving the rank of Sergeant. Jim earned his BA from Manhattan College, class of '53, and after a year at Columbia Law School, joined Francis I. DuPont as an investment broker in New York City. In 1965, he became manager at the DuPont office in Terre Haute, Indiana, moving to Indianapolis in 1969, to manage the DuPont office there. From 1980 through 1995, he served as Managing Partner of Contract Draperies of Indiana, Inc., a family owned business serving commercial clients.
Jim was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, and since 1979, of St. Matthew Parish, Indianapolis. He served faithfully on Sunday mornings on the collection counters committee for over ten years. Jim was ever grateful for his Faith, and the community of friends developed at IHM and St. Matthew's. He was an avid reader, enjoyed classical music, especially the opera, and in fact, all the fine arts.
Being a member of THE BEST SET, a neighborhood couples group that played volleyball every Sunday night for over twenty-five years, enriched his life with dear friends and treasured memories.
Married in 1959 to Sandra Doyle, together they saw with joy their children graduate from college, marry wonderful spouses, and add 16 beloved grandchildren to the family.
He is survived by his son, James and wife, Catherine (Gates) and their sons Andrew and Ryan; daughter, Julia and husband, Marcus Cziesla and their children Lauren and Christopher; daughter, Jennifer and husband William Brady and their sons: William, Patrick, Michael and John; son, Jeffrey and wife, Kimberly (Semler) and their children: Patrick, Mary, Grace and Connor; daughter, Jeanne Margaret and husband, Clint Hardin and their daughters, Ella and Christina; son, John and wife, Angela (Elstner) and their children Collin and Lilly. The love and support of his children, their spouses and the grandchildren, as well as their close relationship with each other, was one of Jim's greatest treasures.
Survivors also include his nephews, John and Thomas Cahalane; nieces, Elizabeth (Cahalane) Grimaldi and Susan (Cahalane) Cicalese, Sheri Doyle, Denise Doyle, Lori (Doyle) Mohr, and Sandra (Doyle) McCullum.
The family is very grateful for the exceptional and compassionate care James received from the staff of Riverwalk Village Nursing Home in Noblesville, Indiana.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2014 in Flanner and Buchanan- Broad Ripple . A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2014 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 4100 East 56th Street, Indianapolis. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Fishkill, NY - Margaret M. LaRue of Fishkill passed away peacefully on December 18, 2014 at Rennaissance Rehab and Nursing. She was 93.
Born on January 11, 1921 in the Bronx to the late Michael and Mary Gilroy Knowles.
She grew up in the house she was born in on Baily Place in the Bronx. Margaret was an avid bingo player, enjoyed reading and was very religious.
Margaret married William LaRue on January 21, 1945 at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in the Bronx, after Williams sudden death in 1960 she went to work at Manhattan College for many years prior to retiring to Dutchess County where she worked at the Fishkill Senior Center.
She is survived by her loving children, William LaRue and his companion, Judy Callahan, of Manahawkin, NJ, Carol Grech of West Hurley, Michael LaRue and his wife, Rose, of Cape Coral, Florida, Margaret Hartman and her husband, Dennis, of Port Ewen and Deirdre 'Dee" Farrar and her husband, Tom, of LaGrange; cherished grandchildren Billy, Danny, Lauren, Brendan, Jessica, Tommy, Anthony, Travis, Jason, Kelly, Michael and Jennifer; 8 loving great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband, William LaRue, in 1960 and nine brothers and sisters.
Friends may call on Friday, December 19, 2014 from 3-7pm at Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main St, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 10 am at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 160 Van Cortlandt Park South, Bronx, NY. Interment to follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Yonkers.

Roberta Ronan, 71, of Larchmont, NY passed away peacefully on December 18, 2014.
Roberta was born and raised in the Bronx, and graduated from St. Raymond’s School, Elizabeth Seton High School, College of Mount Saint Vincent, and Monroe College School of Business. She started Cornell University School of Nursing, but left to marry her beloved husband, Martin W. Ronan, Jr.
She devoted her life to raising her four children, and actively participating in, and generously giving to, her community. A resident of Larchmont since 1976, Roberta’s volunteering included her long-time participation in the Mamaroneck school PTAs, working for many years in the Youth Employment Office at Mamaroneck High School.
She was devoted to her spiritual community, including the parish of the Sts. John and Paul Church, where she sang in the choir, was an Adult Advisor for the Teen Club, and served as a Co-President of the School of Religion and a Co-President of the Women’s Guild. At Sts. John and Paul, she scheduled the altar servers for over twenty-five years and served as coordinator for the Food Bank.
She was a Board Member of the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force since its inception; worked for over twenty-five years for the late Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR; was active at Abraham House, in the South Bronx; and founded an on-line prayer chain.
Her good works were recognized by The Sarah Neuman Nursing Home, the DayStar Program, which runs the Good Counsel Home for unwed mothers on the grounds of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Harrison, and The St. Augustine’s Ladies Auxiliary and Sts. John & Paul Women’s Guild, from whom she received the Sylvia Muldoon Woman of Spirit Award in 2013.
In addition to her husband, Roberta is survived by her children, Christopher (Melissa), Sarah Boraczek (Robert), John (Victoria), and Matthew (Kimberly), her ten grandchildren – with whom she shared countless hours and adventures -- and her brothers, John Sabatini (Patricia), and Richard Sabatini (Dale). She was predeceased by her father and mother, and her brother William.

MONROE — Lynne and David Stora of Monroe are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Elise Carol Stora, to Connor Patrick McCormack, son of Deirdre and Kevin McCormack of Highland Mills.
Ms. Stora is a graduate of Boston University's School of Education. She is now a special education teacher.
Mr. McCormack is a graduate of Manhattan College's School of Engineering. He works as a civil engineer.
The couple are graduates of Monroe-Woodbury High School.
They plan to be married locally, where they both grew up, surrounded by friends and family.

CAPE MAY COURTHOUSE -Thomas James D'Arcy, 85, died on Dec. 15.
He had a storied career as a New York public relations man. Between 1965 and 1995, he worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, publicizing the launch of PATH and Newark airport as it became international. He later spent many years traveling the world to promote tourism to New York. For most of his career, he worked in the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. He was among those who endured the first underground bombing of the towers and had retired by 2001. Still, he lost colleagues, friends and a family member in the terrorist attack.
He was born in Brooklyn in 1929 and grew up in Queens and Manhasset on Long Island. He graduated from De LaSalle High School, then entered military service, serving as an MP at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and went on to serve in the Army Reserve. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He later graduated from and found lifelong friends at Manhattan College in the Bronx.
His career began as a speechwriter for the New York State Comptroller, Arthur Levitt, Sr. in Albany, where he met his future wife, Joan (McDonald). After marrying in 1964, they moved to New York City. Within the next eight years, they had five daughters, moved five times and settled in Ridgewood, where they remained for more than three decades. He was a member Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish, the Knights of Columbus and active in the many local groups, such as the Ridgewood High School Parent Jamboree. He was also a member of the West Point Parents Association. He and his wife became avid golfers and deepened many friendships while on the links. In 2009, they moved to Cape May Courthouse. After he retired in 1995, his wife developed Alzheimer's disease. For the next several years, he devoted himself to her, as both a caregiver and champion. Earlier this year, they celebrated their 50th anniversary.
He is survived by his wife, their five daughters and their families including seven grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
