He was 94. Born in Yonkers, NY, on July 4, 1920, JJ was the eldest son of Edward Joseph and Della Bridget (Hamilton) Stack. He began his lifetime of travel at an early age, making the long subway trek from home into Manhattan where he attended St. Patrick’s Cathedral school and served as an altar boy. He excelled at sports, including baseball and football, and though drafted by the House of David baseball team, he chose to pursue his education. JJ was a sophomore at Manhattan College when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He immediately enlisted in the US Navy, and while serving in the Pacific Theater with Navy Squadron VS-61, met and married Nellie Kathleen Bowles working at Maylands Airport, Perth, Australia. They shared an adventuresome life together during his 20-year Navy career. JJ ran air traffic control operations at bases in Bermuda, New York, New Jersey, Kansas and Florida—and Nellie ran everything else. After his Navy retirement in 1962, JJ was a strategic planner at the Washington Navy Yard, a consultant with SAIC at Tysons Corners, and the President of his own defense-contract company, Cèilidh. During their happy, 40-year marriage, JJ and Nellie raised 11 children while traveling the world. Together, they introduced their brood to western living—that is, in Western Australia and the west of Ireland. With Nellie’s sudden death in 1981, JJ faced his toughest times. But sustained by his Roman Catholic faith, he showed his children that life is to be lived. He shared his mother’s passion for the Sport of Kings, and during the 1990s raced his thoroughbred horse Sports Career at area racetracks. In 1991, JJ married Barbara Knowles, now of Washington, D.C. While they called St. Simon’s Island, Ga., home, they traveled across the US and in Europe and Asia. JJ spent his final years with his son William Stack in Palm Bay, Fl. JJ is predeceased by his brothers Joseph and William Stack and his sisters Theresa Peel, Kathleen Blinn and Margaret Stack. He is survived by his wife Barbara Stack of Washington, D.C. and his children: Bridget Gingrow of Lancaster, Pa.; Mike Stack of Fairfax, Va.; Robert Stack of Virginia Beach, Va., William Stack of Palm Bay, Fl., Maureen Sappéy of Chestertown, Md., Peggy Vaughn of Frederick, Md., Patricia Stack of McLean, Va., Joseph Stack of Wilmington, N.C., Edward Stack of Chestertown, Md., Teresa Hunter of Clemmons, N.C., and Mickey Stack of Arlington, Va. JJ was devoted to his 24 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 11. He was beloved by many nieces, nephews and friends in the US, Australia and Ireland. A Time of Visitation is scheduled 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd, NE, Leesburg, VA 20176. JNEWS: Horn, William J. 'Bill' (MC1964) reports on Twomey, Thomas A. [MC1967 RIP]2014-Dec-05http://easthamptonstar.com/Villages/20141125/Clintons-Among-Twomeys-Many-Mourners#.VIEwdH2u0jM.aolmail Tom was a former--and distinguished--Student Government President at a pivotal time. He was also may attorney and a friend. Amazing that someone one knows is eulogized by a former secretary of state accompanied by a former President. The crowd was huge--much larger than quoted in the article. I was at the church and the reception afterwards. There were many, many people, lots of cars, closed roads and a large police presence to direct the mourners. Tom's death was page one in all the local papers. Thought you would like to know. Bill # - # - # - # - # [JR: Thanks. Sad loss. Regardless of how many or how famous the participants, it just another reminder of our own mortality. I appreciate the heads up. PRAYERSREQUESTED: Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) on a life change2014-Dec-06FROM a blog post from Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) http://keywestlou.com/life-changes-rapidly/ LIFE CHANGES RAPIDLY Posted on December 6, 2014 by keywestlou *** begin quote *** I am down this morning. I just heard about a dear friend in Utica. Her husband e-mailed me. She has been diagnosed with cancer. Everywhere. Breasts, lungs and spine. Plus a mass in the pelvic area larger than a softball. The doctors are still testing to determine if the mass is cancerous. A sweet woman. Never hurt a soul. Her husband my best friend. In a split second, the world turns. Life changes. *** end quote *** Sad when “bad things” happen to good people. (I always say tongue in cheek with a wry smile that I have a long list of villains deserving of such. Luck for the world, I’m not in charge of anything but me. And, I’d never wish ANYONE ill. Karma. But still … …) I’m forwarding this along to Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) for the prayer list. Hope all the readers can spare some good thoughts for this lady, her family, and friends like a down “keywestlou”. # - # - # - # - # 2014-Dec-06 @ 11:39 |
ADMINISTRIVIA: My Jasper wiki was hackedhttp://manhattancollegejaspers.blunderingalong.com/index.php?title=Main_PageMy Jasper Wiki was hacked by Chinese hackers. So I nuked it. I’m planning to recreate it since I’m on vacation. I had a vision of an open source Jasper “Green Book”. I got the idea from Wikipedia’s rejection of my Fandel article. Anything they reject, I was planning to put there. Argh! Oh well, that which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. I need something to keep the Alzheimer’s away. Any contributions are welcome. Wikipedia is a pretty easy tool. I’m going to have to figure out why I was hacked. Argh! # - # - # - # - # 2014-Dec-06 @ 11:47 |

QUADRANGLE: “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” on the Quad2014-Dec-06http://mcquad.org/2014/12/05/photo-gallery-civil-rights-read-aloud-on-the-quad/ Photo Gallery: Civil Rights Read-Aloud On the Quad The Quadrangle by Sean Sonnemann *** begin quote *** On Friday afternoon, students and faculty gathered on the quad to read selections from civil rights documents, most notably Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” The event was organized following the recent court decisions involving the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO and Eric Garner on Staten Island, NY. The lack of indictments in both cases has ignited protest related to police brutality and racial discrimination across the country. *** end quote *** Sad that the crowd was so sparse. And, on a technical note, it wasn’t “court decisions”, but “Grand Jury” decisions. I would decry “police militarization” rather than “police brutality”. I’d also cite “racial division for political and personal profit” rather than “racial discrimination”. We can do better. # - # - # - # - # 2014-Dec-06 @ 12:22 |
ENDNOTE: Why not prosecute ALL straw purchasing charges?2014-Dec-06http://bearingarms.com/welfare-terrorists-arrested-nbp-members-couldnt-buy-bomb-depleted-ebt-card/ WELFARE TERRORISTS: Arrested NBP Members Couldn’t Buy Bomb With Depleted EBT Card Posted by Bob Owens on November 27, 2014 at 9:18 am *** begin quote *** The FBI arrested two members of the New Black Panthers in Ferguson, Missouri late last week on weapons charges, after they used straw purchases a pair of .45 ACP Hi-Point pistols (one for the other, it seems) and bombs from an FBI informant. They planned to murder St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch and Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson, and then destroy the iconic Gateway Arch in St. Louis with three pipe bombs. *** and *** Sadly, there is little chance that either man will be prosecuted on the straw purchasing charge, which alone could mean a 10-year sentence and a $250,000 fine. The federal government routinely drops gun charges, and only a tiny fraction of them are ever prosecuted. Then again, they’re far more likely to get those charges to stick than the bomb plot, which was likely more of pipe-dream than a viable plot. Expect for their lawyers to claim some interesting defenses, including entrapment and mental incompetence. *** end quote *** Sorry, but the persecuted one guy who bought a gun for his father to get his discount. That one went to the Supreme Court. http://legalinsurrection.com/2014/06/supreme-court-affirms-narrow-reading-of-gun-straw-purchase-rules/ *** begin quote *** The defendant in this case, Abramski, arranged to purchase a Glock 19 for his uncle, Alvarez. Abramski had previously been a law enforcement officer, and it is common practice for law enforcement officers to be able to purchase firearms at a discount to the price generally available to the public. Although Abramski had been fired from his LEO job two years prior, he retained his police officer identification, and intended to use that ID to purchase the pistol for his uncle at a favorable price. *** end quote *** That guy was white! Sorry, but if you don’t enforce the gun laws on the books, then why pass new ones or gripe for greater controls on legal gun owners. Argh! # - # - # - # - # |
