Recovered remains of WWII airman to be buried with full military honors
Published October 26, 2014

*** begin quote ***

OAKLAND, Calif. –  A World War II airman whose remains were found more than 60 years after he was shot down over Germany will finally be laid to rest.

A burial with full military honors for Lt. William "Billy" Cook is set for Sunday at a cemetery in Oakland.
The 27-year-old airman and his five-man crew were on a Dec. 23, 1944, mission when they were shot down over Germany.

The crew and their bomber were not recovered until two years ago, when amateur historians found the crash site near the Germany-Belgium border.

An excavation of the site led to the identification of remains belonging to Cook.

He grew up in San Francisco and Alameda, and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley.

“amateur historians”?

Excuse me?

Argh!

What part of “leave no man behind” was forgotten?

The reason little L libertarians, and Moravians, and Quakers, are SO against war is that “We, The Sheeple” forget about the cost that the innocents pay. (By innocents, I include the young mostly men who believe the propaganda and go to sacrifice their bodies for old not-wise men at home!)

Argh!

Paul's story: Left untreated, mental illness threatens lives, families, jobs

*** begin quote ***

Before moving to the Capital Region, I spent my early life in Yonkers with my large baby-boomer family of seven (parents plus five children). My oldest brother was Paul, and to a person, we all remember the cold December night in 1966 when the ambulance arrived. Paul had fallen in the bathroom after studying long into the night for his semester finals at Manhattan College. Paul was trying to maintain his college deferment from serving in Vietnam...and facing a failure in computer programming, and loss of his exemption. Only nine at the time, I was confused, scared, and largely unaware of what had happened.

*** and ***

Finally, my sister, who had learned some hard lessons in navigating the social work system, managed to get Paul to a psychiatric doctor. Paul put down his guard, remarkably, and let her drive him to the hospital. He now is getting the treatment he so needed for three decades. He lives in an assisted-living facility. He's clear, he laughs, he helps people. He's not bitter. He's the big brother I remember.

I view this story through a different lens now. I had the privilege of working with a renowned brain science foundation, which let me produce the Sourcebook of Brain Science. I chafe only at the fact that the information in the book could have spared Paul, my parents, and my sibling so much suffering.

JFACEBOOK: O’Grady, Tim [MC1991] recommends Wing Chick app

2014-Nov-03

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE FACEBOOK NEWS DESK
IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM ...

Tim O'Grady
12 hrs · Driftwood, TX

Hello alumni, I am a jasper graduate from 1991 living in Austin Texas. I along with my niece have built and launched an app called Wing Chick. Please check out our FB page and download the free app. Thanks for your support.

https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=870944812919032

- Wing Chick is a way for women new to town to get to know the women and the town. If your wife or girlfriend has a business or two, you want that Wing Chick to get to know her.
- That new Wing Chick wants to meet like minded women to help them explore their new city or a city they are visiting. Your wife or girlfriend might be a great ambassador to your city/town and she may love to show people your city and introduce her to other friends.
- Maybe your wife or girlfriend needs to add a couple new friends into her circle of friends. We all have a friend or our wife or girlfriend that you may not really want your wife to spend too much time with. Wing Chick helps her expand her social network.
- Wing Chick connects moms to other moms for kid play dates
- Wing Chick connects women to other women for double dates with their husbands/girlfriends (again expanding the circle of friends).
- Wing Chick will help your wife or girlfriend find another Wing Chick to go to that musical that us guys refuse to go see with her. That Wing Chick is in the same boat with her husband.
- When a Wing Chick arrives in a new city, there are so many concerns from day care to grocery shopping to restaurants to kids activities, your wife or girlfriend can be an asset.

The app is for women only to be a safe place for women to meet other women for so many different reasons. Within the app there is a large list of interests to choose from so new Wing Chicks can see who your wife or girlfriend is about before making a connection.

We envision the app to be a global source for women to be there for other women, this is not simply a dating site, it is so much more.

So to wrap up, I have faith that we, with the help and input of many focus groups across the country, have something special here. We will be expanding the app with the ability to form Wing Chick groups as well as a forum to announce events that are happening in your area.

Mr. Scolaro is nationally recognized for results in a variety of complex liability and severe injury cases including negligent security, wrongful death and catastrophic personal injury claims. “As a tireless advocate for civil justice, Tom has carved his niche as one of the most respected trial lawyers in the state,” said Leesfield Scolaro Founding Partner Ira Leesfield. “With Tom’s continued leadership and support, Leesfield Scolaro is poised to maintain its reach across Florida and beyond.”

The South Florida Legal Guide and Florida Trend Legal Elite have recognized Scolarofor his achievement as a top litigator. He gained statewide praise for the prosecution and law-changing results to improve public safety in the area of carbon monoxide detectors. This legislation came after the successful results for 25 clients who recovered against the Key West Hotel for carbon monoxide poisoning.

He is a member of the American Association for Justice, Florida Association for Justice, Dade County Bar Association, Monroe County Bar Association, and Cuban American Bar Association.

Eight Jaspers To Be Inducted Into Athletic Hall Of Fame Saturday

Release: 11/06/2014

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Seven former Manhattan College student-athletes, including four in their first year of eligibility, and one coach will be inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The 2014 Hall of Fame honorees are:

Gerald Buckley ’64 (track & field)
Patrick Callahan ’99 (baseball)
LaCole Fields ’00 (track & field)
Luis Flores ’04 (men’s basketball)
Thomas Jacob Freeman ’04 (track & field)
Steve Lappas, coach (men’s basketball)
Rosalee Mason ’04 (women’s basketball)
Nicholas Silva ’04 (men’s lacrosse)

“The Manhattan College Athletic Department is pleased to welcome these eight very accomplished contributors into our Hall of Fame,” Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Noah D. LeFevre said. “The diversity of the 2014 class in sport disciplines, contributing roles and generations is a credit to the well-roundedness and longevity of our overall athletic program success.”

Buckley (posthumous) was a valuable middle distance runner on head coach George Eastment’s teams, serving as co-captain his senior year. He helped the two-mile relay squad capture first place at both the Millrose Games and Metropolitan Indoor Championships in 1962, and he took third in the 880 yards at the 1963 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships.

In 1997, Callahan became the first Jaspers baseball player ever to earn Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Year honors after leading the league with a .381 batting average. He posted a .317 career batting average and was Manhattan’s all-time leader in hits (147) at the time of his graduation.

LaCole Fields set four Manhattan records in the shot put and weight throw during her career, and still holds the indoor mark in the shot put. She was named All-East seven times and won a total of 13 individual MAAC championships. During the 2000 outdoor season, Fields captured the MAAC title and scored at the ECAC Championships in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.

Manhattan’s all-time leading scorer (2,046 points), Flores was named MAAC Player of the Year and MAAC Tournament MVP in both 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. He led the Jaspers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004, when Manhattan upset Florida in the Round of 64. Flores was inducted into the MAAC Honor Roll at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame during the 2014 MAAC Tournament.

Freeman is the only eight-time All-American in the history of the track & field program. He won a pair of NCAA Championships at Manhattan (2003 indoor weight throw, 2004 outdoor hammer throw). Freeman also captured four consecutive IC4A titles in the hammer throw and is the NCAA record holder in the event. He finished third in the hammer throw at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and represented the United States at the 2009 World Championships.

Lappas coached the Jaspers for four seasons from 1988-1989 to 1991-1992. He led Manhattan back to prominence during his tenure, capped by a 25-9 campaign in 1991-1992. That season, the Jaspers reached the MAAC championship game for the first time and made their first postseason appearance in nearly 20 years, reaching the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

A three-time first team All-MAAC selection, Mason is the MAAC’s all-time leading rebounder (1,217). She also ranks second on Manhattan’s all-time scoring list (1,875). In 2002-2003, Mason led the Jaspers to both the MAAC regular season and tournament championships and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Silva was named MAAC Player of the Year in 2002, as he led the Jaspers to their first ever MAAC championship. He ranks second on Manhattan’s all-time assists chart (84) and has the two highest single-season assist totals in program history. Silva is also third on the all-time list with 155 career points.

The 36th Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame event will begin with a Mass in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers at 4 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony and dinner in the Great Room of the new Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons at 5 p.m.

ENDNOTE: Those euphemisms can kill?

2014-Nov-08

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article40044.htm

Cleansing The Stock’ And Other Ways Governments Talk About Human Beings
Those in power don’t speak of ‘people’ or ‘killing’
By George Monbiot

*** begin quote ***

October 23, 2014 "ICH" - "The Guardian" -   To blot people out of existence first you must blot them from your mind. Then you can persuade yourself that what you are doing is moral and necessary. Today this isn’t difficult. Those who act without compassion can draw upon a system of thought and language whose purpose is to shield them – and blind us – to the consequences.

*** and ***

Terms such as these are designed to replace mental images of death and mutilation with images of something else. Others, such as “collateral damage” (dead or wounded civilians), “kinetic activity” (shooting and bombing), “compounds” (homes) and “extraordinary rendition” (kidnapping and torture by states), are intended to prevent the formation of any mental pictures at all. If you can’t see what is being discussed, you will struggle to grasp the implications. The clearest example is “neutralising”, which neutralises the act of killing it describes.

I doubt many people could kill and wound if their language accurately represented what they were doing. It is notable that those who are most enthusiastic about waging war are the least able to describe what they are talking about without resorting to metaphor and euphemism. Few people have nightmares about squashing insects or mowing the lawn.

*** end quote ***

As a pro-life pro-choice little L libertarian, I have a real problem with the “Culture of Death” and the “euphemisms” to describe killing!

A euphemism is defined as a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing. Such as, “downsizing” as a euphemism for “cuts”!

I think this perversion of our language and understanding goes far beyond a mere euphemism!

The Gooferment politicians and bureaucrats should at least have the honest decency use plain English.

Then, maybe “We, The Sheeple” will wake up.

When that terminology is applied to us, it will be too late.

Argh!
