POSITRACTION: Who Made Jet Fighters and Car Crashes Survivable?

Meet the Rocketman Who Made Jet Fighters and Car Crashes Survivable
Robert Sorokanich

*** begin quote ***

Col. Stapp was a physician and air force flight surgeon interested in figuring out how to make jet fighter crashes and ejector seats more survivable. In 1947, Col. Stapp began a series of now-legendary rocket sled tests, personally subjecting himself to deceleration forces no human had ever before experienced, to help find the limit of what the human body could take.

 *** and ***

Col. Stapp's research career was far from over. After human testing on the rocket sled was halted, Col. Stapp began studying the other dangers that killed pilots. He realized that the Air Force lost nearly as many pilots to car crashes as they did to mishaps in the air; for the rest of his life, Col. Stapp pushed for greater crash safety in car design, eventually becoming permanent chairman of what would be later named the Stapp Car Crash Conference.

Despite his many wild rides on the madcap rocket sled, and the shocking forces it exerted on his body, Col. Stapp lived to be 89 years old. His legend lives on in every fighter pilot who survives an ejector seat trip, and every civilian who walks away from a forceful car crash. Many of us walk around today owing our lives to the cowboy doctor who strapped himself into a rocket sled that could very well have killed him.

*** end quote ***

Never knew that’s what was done to make us all safer by one heroic doc.

Good Afternoon All,

First of all my apologies for an incomplete prayer request that went out on Friday regarding Jim O'Neil. Ever since having been hacked a week or so ago (some of you may have received strange emails from me that I did not initiate and I apologize for that as well) I have had problems with my computer systems and in fact have taken to the library while my own computer is looked at again. But of course my main concern is for the email that went out yesterday. Our prayer requests are sacred to me and treated with great respect, again I apologize. Phil Colon

United States Census data reports the average age that male and female Americans decide to tie the knot is 28 years old and 27 years old, respectively. These numbers mean that most college freshmen can expect to be married less than ten years from the time they start school. For current Jaspers, the matrimonial clock may already be ticking.

Statistically speaking, nuptials may be knocking, but in a society that has accepted a so-called “hookup culture” as the norm, a wedding is the furthest thing from any college student’s mind. In an era where “hanging out” has been accepted as standard for getting to know someone you might be interested in, going on a real-life date seems old-fashioned.

*** and ***

Kerry Cronin, professor of philosophy at Boston College, offers a standing extra credit assignment to those students of hers who will brave the college-dating scene, according to an article in The Boston Globe published in May of 2014. The rules: the student must extend the invitation face to face, pay for the date, and no alcohol, kissing or sex can be involved.

Manhattan College sophomore education majors Klaudia Maslowska and Diana Boyadjian both say they would be up for the challenge.

*** end quote ***

Maybe some old wisdom / morality is re-emerging at Alma Mater?

I find it inconceivable that such behavior would be permitted on a “Catholic college” campus.

I find it inconceivable of my Mother, Mother-In-Law, or any of our families even tolerating such behavior. (My sainted wife had a curfew AFTER she was married and living at home while I was on TDY. Her Mom’s famous diktat: “My house; my rules”.)

Laugh!

I often related that, when I was assigned to Fort Meade after tech schools, one of the reasons my now sainted wife was happy to see me was that she moved out of her Mom’s house.

Any way a very telling story about how “we” have lost the “culture wars” to the liberal libertine “Secular Progressives”.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays about Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma

2014-Oct-14

Good Afternoon All,

From Mike McEneney, our continued prayers are requested. We have had Marlene in our prayers and need to raise the volume.

Marlene had been diagnosed with Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma.  The lymphoma has made it necessary to remove her spleen in July and the lymphoma has attacked her liver.  She is at Sloan undergoing grueling chemotherapy while on a respirator (enlarged liver is pressing against a main artery).

Family and friends are asking everyone they know to please keep Marlene and her family in your prayers  as her situation is very grave.  Doctors are fighting to try and get the liver smaller to relieve the pressure on the artery and also to try and get the liver functioning again.

Marlene and her family are a very faithful family, they need us to help in prayer.  Thank you. God Bless.

Good Afternoon All,

We have an urgent prayer request from a good friend to several of us and a member of our Retreat Team, Dave Ellis. Dave's message is below as it so well states our fervent prayer for one of God's greatest and most precious gifts. We pray for Ziggy, his parents and Grandparents Kathy and Tom. We pray that the surgery goes as prayed for with no complications. As we place our trust and faith in God, please raise the volume for this little fellow who is so loved. Your voices will be heard. Thank you. God Bless.

Ignatius (Ziggy) Mignanelli, beloved infant grandson of Kathy and Tom, is in Westchester Medical Center. He will have brain surgery early tomorrow morning to replace a failed shunt.

Please join in fervent prayer tonight and tomorrow morning that God will guide the doctors and assist them during this critical surgical procedure.

St. Gerard, who, like the Savior, loved children so tenderly and by your prayers freed many from disease, receive our plea for little Ziggy. We thank God for the great gift of this blessed child and ask Him to restore Ziggy to health. This we ask through your love for all children.

Amen.

Hi and Welcome!

I’ve always been one of those creative types. Ever since I could pick up a pencil, I was drawing and dreaming. I’ve had so many random jobs and experiences and looking back now, it was all meant to be. I got my Masters of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology only to work in a Private Equity Firm. I left the finance world to join a fashion ecommerce start-up. I decided to leave the corporate world entirely in 2011 to do what everyone wishes to do…to travel, to cook, to eat, to learn, and to do all the things that a person wants to do when they’re given an opportunity.

I decided to document everything on a blog called Miss Buttercup. This blog is ultimately about “the journey” or whatever that means. I’m still figuring it out through trial and error, through tears and laughter, through heartbreak and triumphs but through it all, I’m a die hard optimist and positive thinker. I believe whole heartedly that everything happens for a reason. I wanted a little place to share my creative side and the things that I love and inspire me. I hope this blog shines a little bit of light into your own lives.

Much love,

Laura

The "Ambassador" is back, and the circularity is stunning.

*** begin quote ***

Charles Gargano, the chairman of the Empire State Development Corporation when Atlantic Yards was proposed and first approved, now has a job promoting Atlantic Yards and other EB-5 projects to green card-seeking immigrant investors in China.

Gargano, a "classy political opportunist" who was embarrassingly evasive about the project in TV and radio interviews, is now part of a scheme that has several dubious beneficiaries.

He's now Executive Director of the U.S. Immigration Fund, which despite its official-sounding name and logo (below), is a private company, based in Palm Beach, FL, which has gone through the requisite hoops to market such investments.

He's helping companies like Greenland Forest City Partners--the new developer of Atlantic Yards/Pacific Park, 70% controlled by the Shanghai city government-owned Greenland Group--gain below-market loans thanks to a loosely regulated federal program.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Sharon

2014-Oct-15

Good Evening All,

Bob and Noreen Mattis have let me know that their Friend Sharon, who has been in our prayers, is scheduled for significant surgery tomorrow, Thursday, 10/16/14. Sharon went into Hospital on Tuesday because she is too week to remain at home. her surgery is expected to take 12 hours. Please keep the volume up for Sharon, as Bob says, that she has the strength to face the challenges of the next few days and what is to come.

Bob and Noreen have great faith in this prayer of St. Francis de Sales and share it with us and thank you for your continued prayers.

Be at Peace
Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life;
rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise,
God, whose very own you are,
will lead you safely through all things;
and when you cannot stand it,
God will carry you in His arms.
Do not fear what may happen tomorrow;
the same understanding Father who cares for
you today will take care of you then and every day.
He will either shield you from suffering
or will give you unfailing strength to bear it.
Be at peace,
and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.

Thank you. God Bless.

Neidnig Recalled at Sag Harbor 5K

A 15-year-old was first, a 61-year-old was second
By Jack Graves | October 8, 2014 - 10:17am

*** begin quote ***

The Pierson High School boys cross-country team turned out in force. Above are, from left, Angelo Toscano (the eventual winner), Lucas Yennie, Aidan Crowley, and Rojuan Patterson. Jack Graves
At Saturday’s second Andy’s Run in Sag Harbor, Robert Arcs, who two years ago became the steward of hundreds of trophies, medals, and plaques won by the late Andy Neidnig over the course of a lifelong long-distance running career, said that he hoped the turnout could be increased in the coming years.

“There were 120 last year, and only 88 this year — we need to juice it up,” said Arcs, who, along with other family members, is on the mend from having his vehicle recently “rear-ended by a pickup truck on North Sea Road.”

Those who did show up were enthusiastic, however. Among them was Tony Venesina, who said he’s still working 10 to 12 hours a day at his Conca d’Oro restaurant, and who was a longtime friend and running mate of Neidnig’s. (“Andy retired at 62, I’m still working at 72.”) Because of foot trouble, he didn’t run.

Sarah Adams of Quogue, a daughter of the late Dr. George Sheehan, one of the seminal figures in the long-distance running boom of the 1970s and ’80s, was there too. Her father and Neidnig were track and cross-country teammates at Manhattan College, and later were inducted into the college’s Hall of Fame.

“He was quite a guy,” Arcs said of Neidnig. “I went to meet his wife — she’s 90 and living in Riverhead. She said all he ever wanted to do was run, that he had seriously thought of quitting his job as a steamfitter so that he could run more.”

“This is just a sample of what I have,” Arcs said, pointing to a table of memorabilia nearby. “He won the New York marathon three years running in his 70s, setting a record. The trophies and medals and plaques I have span a career that began in the 1930s — he ran in the Fillmore Games before they became the Millrose Games — and continued into the 2000s.”

Arcs said he’s still hoping that repositories — he has the Old Montauk Athletic Club, Manhattan College, and the New York Road Runners Club in mind — may be found to house the collection or parts of it.

School removes portrait of candidate for governor
By Erika Niedowski
Associated Press September 27, 2014

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Roman Catholic preparatory school that Treasurer Gina Raimondo attended has removed a portrait of her following comments she made at Planned Parenthood that aren’t in line with the school’s teachings, a school spokesman said Friday.

La Salle Academy President Thomas Gerrow decided to have the picture taken down from a wall in the school’s main building that displays other notable alumni, according to spokesman Drew Lagace. It was taken down Thursday, the day the Democratic gubernatorial nominee spoke in support of abortion rights and “reproductive freedom.”

“Her comments kind of go against our teachings here at La Salle,” Lagace said. He declined to elaborate and said he did not know if the picture’s removal was permanent.
