MFOUND: Alma Mater is NOT recommended2014-Oct-07http://www.cardinalnewmansociety.org/TheNewmanGuide/RecommendedColleges.aspx The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College The Newman Guide recommends Catholic colleges and universities because of their commitment to a faithful Catholic education. All the institutions recommended in the Guide are unique, each with its own special charism, approach to education, and campus culture. For instance, some immerse students in every aspect of faithful Catholic life, while others, though faithful, serve a more diverse group of students. Some allow opposite-sex visitation in student bedrooms, while others do not. Some have a strong core curriculum, while some offer more electives and encourage specialization. One type of institution may not be better than the other. But one type is likely better for your unique needs. Parents and students should look closely at each college to decide if what it offers is what you need and are looking for. We pray that you successfully find the college that is the best fit for you! # - # - # - # - # [JR: In a case of “the dog the didn’t bark”, Alma Mater is not one of the 27 “faithful” recommendations.] # - # - # - # - # 2014-Oct-07 @ 13:08 |

I was overwhelmed by the sensory overload of moving to a faraway place where I knew almost no one, getting used to “nine-to-five” life, living in community with people I barely knew, and being surrounded by the Catholic faith more than ever before. Needless to say, it was an incredibly stressful adjustment, and if you had asked me in October 2013 whether I was going to do a second year of volunteering, I would have said, “Nope.” I would have told you that I would much prefer to be back on the east coast with my family, receiving an annual salary instead of a stipend, and not constantly adjusting to changes around me. I was certain that being a Lasallian Volunteer would not be as rewarding as I originally thought it could be. However, I couldn’t have been more mistaken. Choosing to remain an LV for a second year was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made but also one of the best decisions of my life. I felt a faint pull, a need to be more fulfilled in my part of the mission. I knew that there was something more for me to do, although I wasn’t sure exactly what that was. My doubts and questions were answered as soon as I started my service this year. Everything has fallen into place, and I feel as though I might actually be making a small difference. I am more confident in my abilities to educate my students and help them succeed. I am more comfortable with my faith and have found ways to integrate it into my daily life. I am lucky enough to have been supported in these two Lasallian pillars by the third: my community. So when my 2nd hour student tells me how my tutoring has been helping her in algebra, I know I made the right decision. When I feel moved during evening prayer, I know. And when I realize that I have made some great friends within my community, I know. Everything I went through last year wasn’t easy, but it’s clear to me now how valuable each part of this experience has been. Brohel January 14, 1932 - October 6, 2014 Posted: Thursday, October 9, 2014 3:16 pm PLATTSBURGH - Edward R. Brohel, 82, of Plattsburgh, died peacefully at home on Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Born Jan. 14, 1932, in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Margaret McGee and the late Edward Brohel. Edward started grade school in Woodhaven and continued his secondary education at Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn in 1946, where he met his lifelong friend Edmund Egan on day one. Edward went on to pursue history and art history, graduating from Manhattan College, and furthering his studies at Brooklyn College and NYU Graduate School. From a tender age, Ed lived a life filled with art and music. He first taught art, at the age of 14, to a group of public school students gathered around his family's dining room table, and to his mother's chagrin, used the living room as the venue for his first ever curated show. When he collected his students' small fees, he financed his very first opera subscription. Edward's professional work began in earnest at the Doris Meltzer Gallery in New York, followed by co-ownership of galleries in New York and Washington with potter Jill Hinkley. His teaching of art and architectural studies at NYU, and St. Peter's College, New Jersey, were the springboard to his academic career. His deep commitment to art led him to SUNY Plattsburgh, where in 1978 he became Director of the Plattsburgh State Art Museum, living his passion for the next 30 years. During that time, the College's collection grew from 500 to 8000 pieces, with the Student Association becoming a committed partner in the acquisition of art on campus. Their participation and friendship were a never ending source of joy to Ed throughout his tenure. Teaching held a special place in his heart - his mind was attuned to the unusual fusion of the artistic, historical and political realms, and the sharing of his ideas inspired not only students, but all those who spent time in his company. In addition to expanding the Meisel Collection, the Student Association Collection, the Nina Winkel Collection and the Slatkin Study Room and Collection, and inaugurating the Holocaust Memorial, new galleries were established: the Rockwell Kent Gallery, the Hans and Vera Hirsch Collection, the Louise Norton Room, and the Winkel Sculpture Court. His vision of art as central to human understanding became a part of the whole Plattsburgh community when, with co-curator Don Osborne, Ed began the Sculpture Park. Installation of large sculptural works on the lawns of the College changed the landscape of the College, and the ways in which people of Plattsburgh came to visualize art. Ed served as Chairman of the State University of New York Art Gallery Directors and, from 1984 until 1992, he produced the Educated Eye , a publication of the Albany Museum's study of the holdings of the State University of New York art collections. From 1993 to 1997, Ed chaired the Plattsburgh State Faculty Senate, and was awarded the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service. He also received the College Council Distinguished Service Award and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Along with the Council on the Arts for Clinton County, Ed curated and presented the WCFE Arts Auction for many years. Ed retired from the College in 2008, but remained active in the art community. He then had more time to spend with his beloved Bette - they loved to travel, visit New York museums, watch ballet, listen to Sunday afternoon concerts in Montreal, and welcome friends to their beautiful home. On Sept. 17, 2013, he and his wife were honored for their joint service to the College by the dedication of the Edward and Bette Brohel, Museum Without Walls, which places works of art in public spaces throughout the campus. #-#-# Brohel, Edward R. ENDNOTE: FAA forgot About Drones2014-Oct-11http://gizmodo.com/faas-fancy-new-5-billion-air-traffic-control-system-fo-1639463748 FAA's New $5 Billion Air Traffic Control System Forgot About Drones *** begin quote *** Designers of the Federal Aviation Administration's futuristic, new air traffic control system did a whoops. Despite explicit instructions from Congress to take drones into account, they failed to include them in the plans for the $5 billion NextGen system. And it's definitely too late to start over. This isn't good. It's become increasingly clear in recent years that drones aren't just going to become a presence in America's skies; they're going to become a fixture. The FAA itself just gave Hollywood permission to use drones for filming TV shows and movies, and there's a long line of other folks, like Amazon and Google, that can hardly wait for commercial drones to go mainstream. And that's not even taking the hobbyists or the military into account. *** end quote *** And the taxpayers pay for the mistake? What politicians and bureaucrats are going get fired? Or who’s not going to get a “bonus”! Argh! The Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient! This is just another example of it. # - # - # - # - # |
