The CEO of a $2 trillion investment fund said he made the decision to resign from his post after his young daughter wrote him a note listing 22 milestones he had missed in her life.

Not everyone can afford to do this.

But everyone can afford to do something.

Argh!

How does that old canard go about deathbeds and spending more time at work?

Unfortunately sometimes, that choice isn’t obvious at the time you make it.

And, afterwards, all you can do is spend time at work.

JNEWS: Pompey, Aliann (MC1999) Red Storm Sprints Coach

2014-Sep-28

http://www.redstormsports.com/sports/w-track/spec-rel/092614aaa.html

Coach Jim Hurt Welcomes Aliann Pompey To Staff As Sprints Coach
Four-time Olympian and former NCAA champion joins Red Storm coaching staff.

Sept. 26, 2014

QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s head women’s track & field and cross country coach Jim Hurt has announced the addition of four-time Olympian and former NCAA champion Aliann Pompey to his staff as the new sprints coach for the Red Storm.

“We are exceptionally pleased to have Aliann Pompey join our staff to work with our sprinters and hurdlers and to head up our recruiting efforts,” said Hurt. “Aliann enjoyed a storied and exceptional athletic career, winning an NCAA title and competing in four Olympic Games. The fact that she attained such a high level of success while training here in New York City will have a significant impact on our program and further its long tradition of developing student-athletes to the highest level of the sport. More importantly, Aliann is a person of great character and integrity that reflects the values of St. John’s University. We are sure that she will have a very positive impact on the entire lives of our student-athletes and I cannot wait to see what she will accomplish in her new position. I am very excited that she has decided to bring her varied and immense talents to our program.”

Pompey, a native of Georgetown, Guyana, brings a world-class athletic resume and the experience of representing her country in four-consecutive Summer Olympic Games to St. John’s. A 400-meter specialist who owns the South American indoor record of 51.83 seconds at the distance, Pompey adds a gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and a bronze medal at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo to a long list of accomplishments.

Pompey has represented her native Guyana at the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in addition to participating in the World Championships in Athletics five times and the IAAF World Indoor Championships on four occasions. Her personal-best 400-meter time of 50.71 was achieved in August 2009 at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany. A graduate of Manhattan College, Pompey became the Jaspers’ first-ever national champion after winning the 400-meter dash at the 2000 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships, and also added multiple Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Metropolitan titles to her collegiate resume. A team captain during her time at Manhattan, Pompey was ranked 12th in the world in the indoor 400-meter dash as a senior at Manhattan.

Since retiring from competition following the London Olympic Games, Pompey has dedicated her time to Armory College Prep, a non-profit college access and success program that works to get high school students from New York City’s “high need” schools into college.

While pursuing her Olympic dreams, Pompey worked as a personal trainer at New York Sports Clubs, taught at the Harlem Academy and Urban Institute of Math and Science for Young Women, and served as a Director of Development for PowerPlay NYC and a Development Associate for Harlem Renaissance High School. A dedicated volunteer, she has also served as board member for the Manhattan College Alumni Society, regional board member for the Catholic Youth Organization and president of the Manhattan College Black Alumni Club.

Pompey earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance with a minor in Communications in 1999 and a M.B.A. in Finance in 2003 from Manhattan College. She moved to the United States at the age of 14 and graduated from Cohoes High School in Albany County, N.Y.

Pompey takes over a Red Storm sprinting unit that has an excellent track record both past and present at the BIG EAST Championship and on the regional and national stage. St. John’s sent a quartet of sprinters to the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., while the Red Storm won conference titles in the 60-meter, 400-meter and 500-meter dashes last season to go with an indoor 4x400-meter relay BIG EAST crown and a 500-meter dash ECAC Championships title.

JFOUND: Bortolussi, Gina [MC2008] on Positive Attitudes

Positive Attitudes
September 26th, 2014

Positive Attitudes

It’s common sense that manners and a positive attitude will go a long way in a professional setting. Consumers as a whole want to be treated with respect and greeted with friendly faces. In a practice, the atmosphere and the personnel in that atmosphere have much control over whether or not patients are satisfied with their visit.

Having an attitude with a patient, or overall unfriendly disposition, will not help make the patient feel comfortable. If a patient is not comfortable or happy with a practice and the people who are working in that practice, than they most likely won’t be willing to make another appointment. A negative attitude can actually cost a practice patients and therefore cost them money.

Chiropractors have an obligation to take care of their patients, and so do the people working in their practice. While Chiropractors are making adjustments, the front office should also be making patients feel comfortable. Along with making adjustments, Chiropractors have a number of responsibilities and the front office does as well. Both have to work together to make a practice run smoothly and properly. If the front office isn’t working to their best abilities and providing a positive atmosphere, then the practice’s reputation is tarnished.

It is easy to be stressed in today’s world, but what people have to remember, especially when working with the public, is that a smile goes a long way. Chiropractors entrust their front offices. While Chiropractors are taking care of their patients, the front office is responsible for taking care of the patients who haven’t been seen by a doctor yet.

The front office is the first contact made by the patients coming into the practice. It is extremely important for the people working in the front office to make sure that patients are starting their days with positivity. A good attitude can affect the way patients go about their day, how they feel throughout the day. It can also shape their day and affect how they treat others throughout the day.

Greeting patients with a positive attitude and friendly smile can even impact the way the people working the front office feel. A positive attitude affects the person who is giving it as well as the person receiving it. Keeping a positive attitude creates positive thinking, a more creative mind, success and overall happiness. A positive attitude motivates a person to do the best work that they can and fuels their ability to do their job.

The energy you give out into the world will be given back to you. It is extremely important for a working environment to have a positive energy and for people with positive attitudes to be working in that environment. A practice is only as good as the people who work in it and with positive attitudes and friendly dispositions, a practice can flourish.

Gina Bortolussi is a graduate of Manhattan College and has her B.A. in Communications. She is currently focusing on research of modern Internet-based chiropractic office management solutions, such as Billing Precision (http://www.chiropracticbillingprecision.com). Billing Precision is an all-in-one Internet-based system that includes accountable and transparent billing service, state-of-art touch-screen SOAP notes, advanced patient scheduling, and real-time monitoring for compliance and audit exposure.

Young Alum Combines Service with Sustainability to Make Mark in Green Building Design

2014 09 30 zurica

Just 11 years out of college, Josephine Zurica ’03 was named the new principal of Dagher Engineering.

At 34 years old, after just six years as a professional engineer, sustainable design specialist Josephine (Kaiser) Zurica ’03 was named principal of Dagher Engineering. The former Peace Corps volunteer credits her experiences abroad with helping her to develop the leadership skills and ingenuity to foster sustainable solutions.

The Michigan native arrived at Manhattan in fall 2000 and declared a civil engineering major before Mohammad Naraghi, Ph.D., and Bahman Litkouhi, Ph.D., professors of mechanical engineering, revealed another side of engineering: sustainable design, energy and thermal systems. She quickly changed her major to mechanical engineering and never looked back.

Good Evening all,

Your prayers are requested for Anne Skau, a good friend to several of us and of course George Skau's wife. Anne is going into Hospital on October 6th for Knee Replacement Surgery. We pray that the surgery goes well with no complications and that Anne's recovery is swift and complete. Thank you. God Bless.

Good Afternoon All,

We have had the following in our prayers and we need to raise the volume a bit.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sheila M. who was called home. Please keep Sheila and her family in your prayers as the family mourn the loss of their loved one as she enters the Kingdom Of Heaven and is in God's Eternal Embrace.

Please raise the volume for Michael K. who has a substance abuse problem and is now in the Criminal Justice System. We pray that God's Hand calms this troubled young man and that the Court will be able to provide him the help he needs.

We pray also for Michael H. who has to undergo surgery for a serious back injury suffered as a result of an accident.

I ask you to pray for a young woman, the daughter of a good friend. This young woman has become addicted to heroin, was recently arrested in possession of the drug. The authorities/lawyers have pointed out that recovery can be as long as three plus years. We pray that the Mother and family, as they struggle to get her the help she needs, receive strength in God's Love..

My nephew Stephen, who has been in our prayers, has gone into rehab once again for Alcohol abuse. We pray that somehow he gains sufficient self respect to realize that he is loved and has worth well beyond that which he finds in Alcohol.

I ask you to keep my Brother-In-Law and dear friend, Ed, in your prayers as he rebounds from a stroke suffered a week ago. He is doing well but the MDs have cautioned him that the next several weeks are critical.

Thank you. God Bless.

Phil Colon

MFOUND: Businessmen’s Retreat as an ebook

2014-Oct-01

http://www.topebook2.com/free/pdf/retreat-2012-ten-ways-to-get-closer-to-god-20120723.html

10 Ways to Get Closer to God

1. Connect with Jasper alumni, family, friends, and colleagues over a weekend of fellowship and friendship at the Manhattan College Businessmen’s Retreat. This year’s theme is “Speak, LORD; Your Servant is Listening.”

2. Listen to Fr. Paul Fagan speak about “how words can inspire change"

3. Hear Fr. Jim Lloyd tell the story of how he has heard the Lord speak and guide his calling as a priest.

4. Listen to Tom McCarthy, who heads up alumni relations, talk about Lasallian spirituality.

5. Hear Judge Joseph Bellacosa talk about how the retreat theme applies to his life as a prominent, former jurist.

Receive the Sacramental “Trifecta” of:

6. Reconciliation,

7. Anointing (for strength and perseverance), and

8. The Holy Eucharist

9. Enjoy spiritual sustenance, peaceful prayer, great food, and a serene setting.

And finally… the ultimate parting gift:

10. Take away God’s grace and blessings with you, as you begin the new work week on Monday morning.

Alumni and friends are invited to attend this year’s men’s retreat, to be held at the Bishop Molloy Retreat House in Jamaica Estates, NY during the weekend of September 14-16.

This retreat, although deeply spiritual and moving, is designed also to be practical. We understand that you spend most of your time “in the world” in your day-to-day walk.

Wouldn’t it be great to do that with a newfound peace, one that you could share with others?

If any (or all) of the above ways spark an interest, please contact us at TheRetreatTeam@ManhattanCollegeRetreat.info or visit ManhattanCollegeRetreat.info.

JNEWS: McCarra-Fitzpatrick MaryAnn (MC1989) speaks up

2014-Oct-02

Statement, Public Hearing, 1st October 2014, Peekskill Middle School.

My name is MaryAnn McCarra-Fitzpatrick. My son Brendan attends Woodside Elementary School and my son Conor attends Peekskill Middle School.

It grieves me when people, who profess to be Christians, sin against our children through their venal behavior, in seeking to divert funds from our district. It is not right or just.

My husband and I moved to this community, in part, for the schools. We do not wish to see class sizes go up while our property values go down. It is not right or just.

It is unacceptable that a minority seeks to impose their will upon the majority of parents, who do not wish to see tax funds diverted from our public schools in order to support a de facto Catholic school. If you want a Catholic school in Peekskill, by all means, found one, and charge tuition, but do not expect to be allowed to create an insular, exclusionary fiefdom and, in the process, destroy our children’s schools. It is not right or just.

Assumption cannot seek to balance their budget on the backs of my sons and their classmates. It is not right or just.

Our founding fathers, quite rightly, had legitimate concerns regarding the separation of Church and State. No public funds, no tax dollars, should be allocated to financially support, either directly or indirectly, any religiously-affiliated organization. The applicants may claim that this is not intended to be a Catholic school, but, take a good look at the applicant and the trustees. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is a duck, regardless of what verbal gymnastics are used in the charter application. It is not right or just.

My son froze, last winter, in their school building, which is not ADA compliant, and had to keep his coat on during CCD classes because no heat was put up for the classrooms. Are the taxpayers of Peekskill to be compelled to pay thousands of dollars to bring a building up to code which has been allowed to fall into disrepair? It is not right or just.

As the mother of a 14 year old in a residential special education placement, who has received speech and occupational therapy since two years of age, I know what an ADA compliant building looks like. This isn’t it. In addition, for any child who is in danger of eloping, as with many autistic children, this property is not a secure one, and would be a danger to the health and welfare of children with such disabilities.

Parents of Peekskill—raise your voices and let them be heard! Let Albany know, in no uncertain terms, that this proposed charter school would serve only to damage our schools and, thus, our community. It is not right or just.

“The ugly building that it is, is a really special place…I spent so much time there,” said Nitin Sekhri, a 2003 graduate of the chemical engineering department.

While freshman biology lab may seem like an unlikely place to meet a future spouse, it was a key piece in a relationship that further evolved over service trips and volunteering. It was in the engineering building that Nitin first met Christina, a younger biology major, in introductory level biology lab. While Nitin was taking the courses needed for medical school, Christina was only just beginning her education at Manhattan College as a freshman.

ENDNOTE: Death Panels in the "Culture of Death"

Imagine, as Christopher Buckley (son of William F.) did in his clever book, Boomsday, a plan to make the government solvent by offering incentives for people to kill themselves at age 70 and younger. Instead of calling it suicide, it would euphemistically be known as “Voluntary Transitioning.”

Now we have Ezekiel Emanuel, Ari and Rahm’s brother, making quite a splash with his article “Why I Hope to Die at 75” in the Atlantic. While he doesn’t plan on suicide, he will stop receiving medical treatment. He says people deteriorate, and are less productive and creative. So why stay around so long?

The former White House aid’s article makes Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet’s piece on Casey Research last December all the more interesting. She pointed out that Mr. Emanuel has written plenty about “The Complete Lives System” which:

makes crystal clear that physicians must not focus on the individual patient. Instead, medical care should be allocated based on the patient’s usefulness to the “collective good.” If you’re too old, or too young, or your ailment is too complicated, society is better off letting you die rather than paying a doctor to heal you.

One tenet of the Complete Lives system is that medical care for people under age 15 and over age 45 should be attenuated. “Attenuate” means to ration. Emanuel believes that the very young and the elderly are less valuable to society than those in the middle of the age curve.

Mr. Emanuel is likely trying to start a trend and maybe even plant the idea for legislation to stop caring for people at 75—all for the good of the country, of course.
